Once more we've got Giant Bomb's Alex Navarro joining us, and this time it's for perhaps the weakest episode of season 11! Homer can't sleep, which leads him to an insomnia-induced freakout that brings him to Spring Break for some reason. After hanging out with Kid Rock of all awful people, the family randomly kills an alligator, and then more crazy things happen that would make this description even longer! So get ready to build this podcast on rock and roll!

They finally got to this one. "I like that."

This episode suck aaaaaaasss. I feel a strange sense of closure revisiting this though - it's not going to get much worse than this.

I had totally blanked on what this episode actually was until I sat down to watch it last night, but once it got going I was flooded with memories of watching this A LOT in syndication, and back then, not thinking it was that bad. Honestly, I still don't think it's THAT bad, at least not a "worst episode ever" territory. Kid Rock's whole bit is definitely up there in stupid memability with Mel Gibson or "Lisa Goes Gaga" for just fawning over someone popular, and he definitely fucking sucks, but I don't know, the show has had worse episodes for me even just in seasons 1-11. Homer is a complete jerk-ass, sure, but his paranoia, partying antics, and killing that alligator are less awful than killing Maude or other times he's been a shitty spouse & parent. I will absolutely agree though that the plot is a total mess with so many random, unrelated ideas put together, and no satisfying throughline or conclusion, and to me I think that's why I had such a hard time remembering it. Kid Rock's bit and the alligator could be from completely different episodes from each other and the beginning of this one, and it wouldn't make much difference. --- Beyond all that, I do have to say I love Diedrich Bader in this episode.

So I think at this point this podcast has now a strong Top 3 Worst Simpsons Episodes, so far at least. #3 Kill the Alligator #2 Another Simpsons Clip Show #1 Homer Simpson in Kidney Trouble The reason I personally ranked them that way is because Kill the Alligator is at least admitted to be a bad time by the writers, Another Clip Show was INTENDED to be bad out of spite so it technically succeeded, but Kidney Trouble has neither excuse. It was a honest attempt to make an enjoyable Simpsons episode that ended up showing Homer at his worst.

While in my eyes this isn't the worst episode of the entire series (Co-Dependant's Day is, if anything) but it's damn near the worst of the Mike Scully period. It really does exemplify everything that's bad about a good number of his episodes: horny/cruel/moodswingy Homer, a lazy, who gives a damn ending, and plot drift so bad that each act might as well be in different timezones. That said, as bad as the Kid Rock stuff is, it could be worse, this could've been produced when All Summer Long was a big deal.

This episode put me in a bad mood... I like that!

Yeah, there's not much to defend here. At the time I hated it, and on any re-watch I've done I have found I continue to hate it. I even hated it back when it aired for making me angry at Diedrich Bader, who prior to this episode I had no reason to think ill of. There are still some good, isolated, jokes, but not good enough to rise above the bile. I am kind of indifferent to Horny Homer, I suppose it works when he's drunk or has lost his inhibitions, but I am pro Horny Marge so I did kind of enjoy her response to the gross "show your boobs" guy. And Kid Rock...yeah. He sucks. Alex wondered if they could have gone with a Florida act from the era which immediately made me think of Creed and, honestly, I don't know if we dodged a bullet or not there. Now lets never speak of this episode again.

This isn’t the episode that made me stop watching (I held in until the blink-182/Tony Hawk episode because that was and still is, very relevant to my interests) but yeesh this was a real bummer episode. Boy you can really hear the air being sucked out of the room on the podcast when Homer start trying to sing along to bawidibaw or however you spell that.

Thad Komorowski

"More hashbrowns, sugar?" is the only good line. No, this episode is gatorshit. On the topic of Girls Gone Wild, I'm amazed you didn't bring up how those ads populated late night TV for many years, specifically Cartoon Network, and the announcer's "WARNING" functioned as 2:51 am wake-up call for everyone at some point.

I didn't like this episode at the time, and I fucking despise it now. The one plus to revisiting this episode this time, is me realizing the, "Homer frames Marge for DUI" storyline isn't found in this episode.

Eve of the Stars

Saddlesore Galactica is honestly a pretty entertaining episode for what it is, but this one...not even a little. I'd call it the worst of the Scully years easy, but there's way worse Jean ones coming up, I think. Boys of Bummer from season 18 is my worst (the episode where the town turns on Bart for losing at baseball and drives him to attempt suicide).

I'm surprised there wasn't a mention of how this episode included another joke about the whole "what state is Springfield in?" discussion in its final scene. If the Simpson family is banned from 48 states (which of course would never be acknowledged ever again and directly contradicted dozens of times, including by the Movie) and they treat the other 2 as places they're not currently in, then Springfield is not actually in the United States.

As someone who loved/still loves nu metal, the appeal of Kid Rock alluded me. And after listening to this podcast and hearing about the line Kid put in himself, I think I know the reason. While other nu metal bands would build there songs around anger at self (KoRn, Linkin Park), anger at society (Marilyn Manson), or just misanthropic anger in general (Limp Bizkit, Slipknot); Kid Rock was never angry. Instead, his songs were mostly about how awesome he was and you were a loser if you didn't like him. Even in his "sensitive" ballads like "Only God Knows Why", the main crux is that even though he's sad, he's still awesome because he's a rock star. Even as a teenager, I saw through that phony act. I guess it also didn't help that all the kids who bullied me in my middle school in the South thought Kid Rock was the shit along with other bands like Trapt, 3 Doors Down and Creed.

The Logan's Run joke will forever be filed in my brain as "a joke my dad had to explain to me, and probably the last time I remember him laughing at the Simpsons"

Rewatching this episode, and yikes. It almost makes me long for Family Guy's cutaway gags.
