Nothing from the '90s can truly stay dead, so it was only a matter of time before we saw a revival of Warner Bros.' Silver Age of animation with the return of Animaniacs. And while it could have been a cheap, cynical cash-in, the presence of Steven Spielberg assured that someone spent a whole lot of money on this series—which rarely happens in the world of streaming. Sure, the actors sound a bit older, and the new animation takes a bit of time to get used to, but this reboot stays incredibly faithful to the original spirit of the show. So fill your slacks with your favorite stacks of cold cuts and get ready for our deep dive into the return of the Warners!

I first found out about Katie Rice from watching Penny-Arcade's web series Strip Search, a reality show about finding the best up and coming webcomic artist. It's a perfect recommend for people who hate the typical conventions of reality competition shows. Everybody's there to make friends. There's minimal editing to make things more dramatic. It's just focused on being a fun show about people who honestly all made more off Kickstarters than they would have off the prize money. This lead me to check out Katie's web comics like Skadi and Camp Weedonwantcha and only years later did I learn about her past with Spumco. It does explain a lot about her artistic choices and her clear influences but it never defined her for me. It's so cool to see her go from an obscure artist on an obscure web video series where she was put up for elimination so many times she became friends with the judges to being a director in charge of this reboot of Animaniacs.

Offshoot comment: While the live action star trek was what they are. I have thoroughly enjoyed the new animated show Lower Decks, maybe you can do an episode on it as it first season wrapped up a few weeks ago.

As someone who was not a fan of the original show outside of Pinky and the Brain, I do have to say it is a wholly successful reboot in that the best parts (the mice) remained consistently funny and the shitty parts (a lot of everything else) remained so. The original was so mediocre that it was very possible to attain that level of quality (outside of the animation). The utter lack of the ensemble made this at times hard to sit thru. In fact, this reboot is a good argument for why the main characters were the most overbearing and overrated in the original without the likes of MVP Slappy Squirrel picking up some slack. The Scumco DNA gets off-putting to the point where it does absolutely fail as a general audience show (any watcher I spoke to who’s a parent has said they would NOT feel comfortable leaving their kid with that Halloween episode). And the animation is really bad with the hybrid puppetry for much of the run. Sometimes to an astonishing agree - the Suffragette segment looked like the Drawn Together movie. I don’t think it’s safe to answer why the animation noticeably makes a dramatic improvement deep into the run, just as there’s definitely a reason Tom Ruegger and friends weren’t called back... but as Bob and Henry say, you can read between the lines of what’s been said about this reboot’s production and figure it out. (Paul Rugg declining to do Freakazoid for this but doing it for Teen Titans Go says it all.) To end on an upbeat note, yes Starbox and Cindy is the best thing thus far, one of those rare TV cartoons that shows good taste across the board, and Katie Rice is far and away the best director on the reboot. She should get her own series FFS.

Very astute analysis, guys! I definitely agree that the show needed a bit more variety and the little one off sketches should be more plentiful. Still, I had a ton of fun and laughed a whole lot!

While I understand and appreciate your concerns, I don't think either of you should feel bad for liking this show despite the treatment the original creators got. You guys still made sure to call out the BS from the higher ups, and gave credit to those who deserve it (the artists and the writers who had nothing to do with the sketchy choices and just did what they supposed to). So this is yet another case of just making sure to condemn those higher up who almost made this a train wreck and praising those doing the actual work to make sure it was not.

I haven't watched the series yet (for some reason it passed me by) but I got to the part with the Warner's being less horny. I wonder how much of that has to do with #MeToo? I forgot when the show was announced but I am so sure that the series would have been in production during when the movement was more prevalent.

I've watched most of the reboot so far and I would say Animaniacs has largely returned as I remembered it. I've also watched a lot of the original run in the past year or so since my kids went through a bit of a phase with it. I don't love the original, but it has its moments, and the reboot is similar. It's more streamlined, which is both good and bad. I miss Slappy, but I don't really miss any of the others. I wish there had been more emphasis on creating new stars and hopefully season two goes in that direction. Of the changes they did make, I suppose they're fine. Changing the opening song to refer to Dot's wit instead of being cute probably didn't need to happen, but I totally understand the staff being uncomfortable with the fact that the female lead's defining characteristic was to be cute. And I may be in the minority, but I like that the Warners are less horny because the "Hello Nurse" stopped being funny after episode 30 of the original run. All in all though, I'm glad to see the long development cycle largely paid off as I definitely was concerned how this was going to turn out. I was not surprised to find out the show was still being recorded and worked on early in the year. It seems that artists have become proficient enough with digital animation that the actual time to record and animate is not nearly what it was ten years ago. I watched the making of doc on Frozen 2 that's on Disney+ with my wife not that long ago and it was pretty shocking how much animation was done in the final year of that film's development. Of course, the documentary glosses over the probably abusive amount of "crunch" Disney inflicted on its staff to finish that one.

Regarding the point in your conversation about the orchestral members recording individually, it's actually not as crazy as it sounds! That's not to diminish the work that goes into it, of course. My husband is in a professional choir and they've been recording remotely since fall, much in the same way. He gets a click track from his conductor that has the clicks, when to start (and clap for the official take) as well as some spoken instructions ("creesceeeendooo.... rest!). Then he later records a video of him lip syncing (clap!) and then they piece it all together. What does sound like it makes it MUCH more complicated is in a choir there's just sopranos, altos, tenors, and baritones. In an orchestra I suppose they have to have a separate click track for every instrument and then different parts from there...

With all the talk about how the Warner Brothers aren't allowed to be horny any more, I'm surprised you passed over the one raunchy gag they did sneak in here, Wakko saying "how high does this thing go?" while pointing at the CEO's skirt.

I think better terms for the "flash" style you guys mention is something like "motion tweened" or "digital puppet" animation, those are the terms I've heard around the community. Lil Nas X is EXACTLY the same age as me! It's surreal even for me as well.

About the Animaniacs being the genesis of an animated arms race. I want to say Nickelodeon beat them to the punch with shows like The Legend of Korra, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Glitch Techs. Even SpongeBob since 2015 has really upped the animation quality. Unfortunately most of those shows are gone, and all but one of Nick's upcoming animated shows are going to be CGI, so it seems like they've toned down their ambitions.

I don't know if they can really reboot television power rangers as it has continuously aired new episodes(with ongoing continuity between series even) since its inception with like one 2 or 3 year gap! Though apparently they actually kind of are going to try and make a CWesque version simultaneously with the continued production of the kids version in the next couple years according to a brand management plan Hasbro laid out recently.

Hi I really like you're guys episode on animaniacs but i do very much disagree with bob saying that animaniacs needs to have more parodies of niche pieces of culture because that is what a lot of other shows do now amazing world of gumball did a long final fantasy parody episode the 2012 ninja turtles had a an episode where casey jones becomes basically a clothed doctor manhattan and an joke evolving the chuck norris cartoon basically having the animaniacs being in these paroides i feel wouldn’t be as special or unique as it was 25 years ago and just more of millennials and the late gen xers nostalgia that’s in many animated shows Also if the show does become successful the lesson that hulu or hbo max will learn is to double down on 90’s nostalgia so i hope you're all excited for a reboot of the Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa

Mr. Skullhead was the secret glue that held it all together (I may be delusional though)

Holy shit I'm glad I didn't know who the showrunner was before I started watching this either because I would've went in very much concerned. As is, I went in pretty blind, watching the first episode and this one right away so I'd be ready for the podcast, and I had a great time. Honestly, the new segment of this episode in particular actually got me quite misty eyed as I sit here in month... ten of quarantine/social distancing, so I'd say they did a damn good job with things, even if there are definitely some missing things that you guys pointed out, which I hope will be returning or ironed out for season 2.

I'm 100% in agreement that Brain looks like a jerk in this episode. Her descent to feral animal was uncomfortable to watch. I hope she returns in a future season, a genius female mouse would make a great rival. I remember on the original series Brain had a crush on another mouse until she underwent an experiment and became smarter than him. He immediately lost interest as he thought he needed to conquer the world before she beats him to it. A funny ending but it also reminds me that many men feel threatened when they encounter women more successful than them.

I have to agree with Bob about the donut talk, I live in portland and voodoo is overrated and bluestar is the superior donut. Dont get me wrong voodoo is still really good and I totally recommend going there, but blue star is better. Also if you just want the donuts from voodoo and don't care about the touristy stuff go to voodoo too instead of the flagship store Seriously there will be lines around the block for voodoo and like maybe 10 people at voodoo too for the same donut
