This week we're joined by fantastic artist and friend Nina Matsumoto, for a very special occasion worthy of breaking our chronological format! Back in November 2019, we all attended a Simpsons table read for this very episode of season 32, and now that it's finally aired a year later we're ready to reflect on it and see how it compares to the original script! Listen along for this Skinner and Chalmers adventure!

Game Night is a great movie

Manic Rainbow

This episode was super great. Super funny, and with some surprising heart. I have to admit Harry actually sounds like he is having fun in this one! So far this newest season has been extremely strong and has actually made me a regular viewer again. The only thing that would make things better would be if you guys had a cameo. And am I crazy or does it seem like the animation has been looking way better recently? I wonder if Disney is actually putting some more money towards it.

Frank Grimes

Cool, so this was the ep you guys sat in on. Now I'm curious what was cut, since this was a Skinner ep. Thought it was kinda ballsy they had like only 3 or so mins of the family in total. Other than something like the spin off showcase and 22 short films, can't really think of any ep where the family isn't heavily involved.

Alistair Shand aka Bongo

HBO max we haven’t even got new Simpsons - look forward to seeing it in the new year

SomeBloke

I've gotten somewhat used to hearing What a Cartoon!s about episodes I haven't had time to watch, but this is the first time it's even been possible for that to happen with Talking Simpsons (I guess that makes this a preview for when you get past season 14 or so). The net effect is a bit surreal, but still great podcasting. Definitely makes me interested in watching this episode whenever it eventually makes its way to Disney+.

OceanMan

The DJ for my wedding offered us a silent disco option. Recommended it for later weddings since it helps bypass noise ordinances.

Paul

Lol I actually have no idea what Poke is and never heard of it before this aired last week. This episode oddly reminded me of a Family Matters where Laura misses a flight to a cheerleading competition and Urkel has to drive her. Also I'm with Nina, those shakespeare improv people were DELIGHTFUL

Frank Grimes

So for any Cincinnati listeners, is your spaghetti delicious? It sounded pretty good

Dan Z

wow 20 years later the voices are really different

Hearing current events in the News Segment is eerie. Dug the hell out of this episode, this and Podcast News makes me wonder if Harry is into the show again since he's been tuned out for awhile. Also Skyline Chili is awful.

ShyRanger

Question form a young person who knows nothing about old forms of media. When there's the joke about Timothy in Skinner's car, and it's stuck so it's the only song playing, that reminded me of a Rocko's Modern Life episode where they go on a road trick, and also get an annoying song stuck on play and it's the only thing that plays. So my question is, was that a thing? Could tapes get stuck in cars and just play the same song over and over?

Thrillhouse Cycling

What's that you say? Me thanking you? No it's not a misprint. For you see, I enjoyed writing that article for Canadian Cyclist, as much as you enjoyed reading it. Glad you enjoyed the article we wrote up! Tickled pink by the mention! In case anyone missed it, this is the article mentioned around the 1:25 mark about cycling: https://cyclingmagazine.ca/sections/news/the-simpsons-parodies-the-cycling-scene-official-thrillhouse-verdict/ TBH this podcast was one of the inspirations for our Simpsons cycling meme account we started back in 2018, so pretty neat to see/hear worlds collide. Keep drawring,

This was a really fun episode, great to hear from Nina again too! I am not from Cincinnati but my Mom and Grandmother are. So growing up my mom made the Chili Spaghetti somewhat frequently. I love it, you basically boil ground beef with spices and it's very flavorful. I didn't have Skyline's version of the chili until I was a teenager and it is gross. I don't know what they do to it (I think they put cocoa powder in it) but it just tastes like it looks. Terrible. But the recipe my mom made was always very tasty. However, I do think the best Ohio food is the Buckeye (candy) which Bob might be familiar with. It's a peanut butter ball wrapped in chocolate to make it look like a buckeye tree nut. It is sublime. Thanks again for the fun podcast.

I thought it was funny how they did the cheat with jacket colors as they hung because it was almost pointless to bother with it. I feel like every Simpsons fan watching noticed immediately that Skinner's coat was the wrong shade of blue when he puts it on in the moment, so why bother to try and hide it? Solid, modern, Simpsons episode. I've actually mostly enjoyed the current season when I've caught it. It's not appointment viewing and I should just set the DVR, but I guess I'm lazy. I'm in agreement that Gary is a perfectly cromulent name for Chalmers. I'll never think of him as Gary Chalmers, but it doesn't take me out of the episode when a character refers to him by his first name. I used to be a big baseball fan and Skyline Chili is a polarizing dish among baseball writers. It felt like every beat writer had an opinion on it which was either "It's fantastic," or "This is an affront to meat-based cuisine everywhere!" It is more like meat sauce, but different from what I consider traditional chili where the sauce portion is at a minimum and is merely a binding agent for the meat and beans. Skyline Chili is like the ground beef equivalent of Taco Bell meat where the meat has been ground so fine it's practically paste. It's Cincinnati's Cheese Steak in that it's mostly fine, but if you get psyched up for it and go out of your way to try it you may be let down.

Like Henry, I'm a huge fan of 70s music, not so much McArthur Park, but everything from ABBA to Zeppelin hits me just right. This may be in part because of Simpsons syndication. I believe it was Time/Life commercial for Sounds of the 70s that aired at least twice a day during my years of syndication viewing. It was so ubiquitous, I inadvertently developed the stupid human trick of being able to sing each snippet in sequence from memory, only losing the ability in the past few years. Although Timothy wasn't among them, fellow One Hit Wonderland feature The Night Chicago Died was, and perhaps several others. Likewise, I was a huge fan of the original run of WKRP. Being born in the even MORE perfect birth year of 1981, it was a little bit before my time too, but was a syndication favorite in my family. Sad the music has made streaming impossible, because it totally holds up to this day (as does Mama's Family).

Nina, no matter the current nepotism, is a great guest and I always appreciate her on the show

People/countries without HBO Max don’t get completely screwed out of WB 2021 movies. The announced plan is for movies to premiere in theaters where that is still a thing and on the same day premiere on HBO Max. They will only stay on Max for a 31 day window. After that the movie leaves Max, and then it goes through all of the normal distribution windows and channels (these are usually digital purchase, rental, physical sales, movie channels, streaming again). It’s a weird strategy.

Ric Mahurin

Yes, Harry Shearer was having a good time. Can’t get over how much Cartwright sounds different over time.

Ric Mahurin

Also the 2 GM car Keys were accurately rendered. One square head for ignition and one round head for the door

Ric Mahurin

Strangely the Buick was poorly rendered

Ric Mahurin

Other Oldsmobile Cutlass was well rendered

Ric Mahurin

Except that body of cutlass was never produced as a convertible

Ric Mahurin

The last couple of seasons have had some really funny episodes- this is one of them.

Ric Mahurin

“Look at the Skyline!”

Ric Mahurin

“He sounds like a good guy, you jerk ass”

Cincinnatian here still listening to the podcast but here's some insights. Cincy chili is served on a boat like plat not a standard flat plate. P&G is a Cincinnati company so having an auditorium named for them makes sense. Cincinnati weather is usually more fair than northern Ohio since we don't have to deal with the lake effect snow. We got about two inches of snow compared to the foot Cleveland got. Henry I'm disappointed in you not mentioning one of Cincinnati's most famous landmarks The Hall of Justice or as we Cincinnatians call it Union Terminal.

I cycled to work when I lived within 2 miles of my work in Houston, Texas, and I was constantly baffling every single driver stuck in traffic. My favorite memory is a car buzzing me, and a motorcyclist seeing it and racing after him to yell at him in biker solidarity.

We have silent discos here in Portland but I've never gone because I hate dancing.

As a born and bred Yinzer (IE: someone from Pittsburgh), it’s true, we have a ton of bridges. You definitely know you’ve become a true Pittsburgher when you refuse to cross any of these bridges for any reason, even if the distance is not far.

To Bob saying there are only two cities in Ohio starting with a C - there's a third! Ohio's capital is Columbus, OH. I don't fully understand why Cleveland and Cincy have eclipsed Columbus in national awareness, especially when Cbus has a much bigger population than both of them (roughly the population of San Francisco). If I had to make a guess it'd be because Columbus doesn't have a "big thing". Cleveland has the rock and roll hall of fame, Cincy has Skyline. I love Columbus and think it's got a lot of great things and communities, but if someone came here for a week I can't think of anything essential for them to see. Also for bonus points the old ohio capital was Chillicothe. Ohio has always had a real fixation on 'C' and it must move on.

Still a-listenin', but when Nina asked "Has any character apart from the Simpsons gone travelling" a couple of examples sprang to mind. Apu goes to India in "Homer and Apu", Ned goes to Vegas in "Viva Ned Flanders", Patty and Selma go to China in "Goo Goo Gai Pan." Although one or more Simpsons go along with them, I personally feel they count because the stories, the people who are experiencing the emotional change (or in Ned's case, unwarranted trauma) as a result of the journey aren't members of the family. I'm also convinced there's an episode where Mr. Burns goes on a vacation somewhere and gets horribly bored not running the Nuclear Plant, but I can't for the life of me remember which one...

Game Night was really good - I think you'd all like it

The new Animaniacs is available in Canada... if you have cable. It's on Teletoon every Saturday.

I'll help you out Nina: Adirondak Chair=Muskoka chair. Or maybe I didn't and Muskoka chairs are an Ontario thing. They are a specific design of wooden cottage deck chairs.

Thad Komorowski

While the new episode was OK, I just have to comment how claustrophobic Simpsons animation has gotten. As if they just threw live models, who were directed to move and gesticulate as no actual person would do normally, into a program that "Simpsonizes" them. Is this Silverman trying to rekindle the glory years in a system that has utterly banished the drawing and acting he brought to life that made the show a legend in the first place? Because it makes late Simpsons really unpleasant to watch. That and everyone other than Dan, Hank, and Yeardley just CAN'T DO THE VOICES ANYMORE.

Dylan (batmanboy11) Freitag

This is easily the best new Simpsons episode I've seen in a decade, if not purely on the basis that it didn't constantly make me cringe like the others I've watched (but I did also legitimately enjoy this one for the most part). While I think part of it is that this exploration of Chalmers & Skinner didn't seem to shit on anything from the golden era, it also just felt like there was some actual cleverness and effort put into the thing, rather than machine trodden crap. It was also nice to see them not constantly shitting on millennials and progressiveness like one of the last episodes I watched a while back. -- Nina was an awesome guest as always!

Brandon

I live in Portland, OR, but went to Cincinnati in 2018 for a trivia tournament. I was not really looking forward to it, but fell in love with the city. It's a great craft beer town, has one of the best zoos I've ever been to (RIP Harambe), has a cool video store with a Tarantino-themed hidden speakeasy, a cool mix of 19th and 20th century architecture downtown, and I was a fan of Skyline chili (5 way). I will definitely be coming back to the Queen City.

DrKarate

Surprised y'all didn't talk about the MST3K joke from Monster A Go-Go where they talk about Timothy, and Joel says its actually about a duck (this is not true, its super about cannibalism). Also! As someone from Connecticut who has steamed cheeseburgers as a famous food from my state, they are disgusting! I think a lot of people have had steamed cheeseburgers and don't realize it, because if you've ever had White Castle, you've had a steamed burger. The process of making a White Castle burger is to put a bed of onions on a grill, and then throw the beef patty on top of it, getting cooked by the "onion vapors". This is also why they have holes in them, so they cook more evenly.

PurpleComet

I didn't enjoy the episode as much as you guys. Watching current day Simpsons after viewing classic episodes for so long is jarring. The characters move stiffly and timing feels off. The fight at the B&B in particular felt unnatural. Some decent jokes but eh. Having said that, I enjoyed the banter between you guys. I can tell all three of you enjoy each others' company and it made the podcast more fun.

Gray_Squirrel

Interesting to hear that you guys in America (and Canada) are unfamiliar with ‘silent discos’. They are fairly popular novelty events here in the UK. People enjoy them as an alternative to traditionally loud clubs and venues don’t need late night noise licences. Generally there will be two competing DJ’s broadcasting on different frequencies and you are free to switch at any time on your headphones. You end up with a divided room of people dancing to wildly different rhythms. It’s also a great chance to test your musical compatibility with your date!

Kris

Silent discos are great for people who get over stimulated easily but still want to go to a club

Kris

I listened to a bunch of April March (real name Elinor Blake) in college. She is most famous to American audiences for the doing the song Chick Habit (English version of Laisse tomber les files another song she covers) in Quentin Tarantino's death proof as well but im a cheer leader. she was also a principal animator for Ren and Stimpy and worked on a number of animated series She covers a lot of French pop songs of the 60s

To Nina's comment about Homestar Runner in the plugs at the end - I just learned today that after the death of Flash they've entirely moved as much content as possible over to in-development emulator Ruffle and for the first time in a long time it's easily accessible in the way it was originally seen. Check it out - https://homestarrunner.com/sbemails .
