This week, we're covering the biggest episode of King of the Hill ever! (At least in terms of ratings.) Green Day guests stars at the height of their powers as the Arlen-based rock band Cane and the Stubborn Stains, a group of unruly teens that leads Hank and the guys to question their remaining youthfulness. Listen in and learn the difference between a roadie and a groupie, how raccoon noises can often be confused with the sounds of lovemaking, and the importance of term life insurance. So sit back and enjoy this week's podcast—unless you like laughing at Tony Danza.

I know I’m way late but I have to say: dookie was Green Day’s third record, not their first

Mr Very Real

Checking in just 3 short years later the Mullet is back with a vengance

Razor's Edge

This was one of my favorite episodes of Season 2. I liked how they had Tre Cool, the drummer of Green Day, voice the lead singer of the band, Cane Skretteberg, while Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt voiced the other two members of the band. It was also the first time I had heard of paintball. While I didn't play much of paintball growing up, I had a friend who became a semi-professional paintball player later in life.

I've seen the flaming bag of poop prank on so many TV shows and never understood why it would work on anyone. If I open up my door and see something on fire, my absolute last instinct is to put out a fire using my body. Grab the garden hose or something!

I don't think that's Billie Joe voicing Cane. I'm not a Green Day fan, but it sounds like "the other guy's" voice. I thought Dookie was fine, but yeah, American Idiot wore out its welcome fast. I partly blame my love of baseball then as someone on the Red Sox referred to the team as "a bunch of idiots" in 2004 so, naturally, "American Idiot" would be played. A lot. Especially since that was the Red Sox team that would go on to win the World Series and break the fabled curse of the Bambino so it was an inescapable team even for people in my area who didn't follow baseball. My father-in-law inexplicably got into paintball 3 or 4 years ago, so I've been pulled into it to some degree as well. It's okay, those paintballs don't hurt much unless you get hit on bare skin or a finger. I think my father-in-law mostly plays it to get out of the house and away from my mother-in-law and I go along sometimes so I can be a good son-in-law. I can't handle being around the guys who get way into it though and are living out their Call of Duty fantasies on a course of fake tombstones and plywood bunkers. There are far too many dipshits into paintball, so I pretty much only play if it's a private game with people I'm at least familiar with. And also, What About Bob? is fantastic. I love that movie. It's an easy go-to if I just want something that will make me feel good. It's just too bad there's some controversy over it between Dreyfuss, Murray, and the studio that I believe prevented it from getting a Blu Ray release. The only DVD release, which I own, is from when DVDs were still young and the screen looks like a postage stamp on modern televisions. I think I did see it was added to a streaming service recently so I'll have to check that out as the quality should be better than my crappy DVD.

Bob and Henry, you might already know about this, but just in case I strongly suggest you watch the Lindsey Ellis video "Protest Music in the Bush Era." Henry's point about the bar being so low couldn't be more right, and while that album is indeed try-hardy, it probably was the best that could've been done at the time to be heard by most people.

Lockerus

I went through a paintball phase in high school in the early aughts. I did get paintball spray in the eye; somebody shot me in my mask and the paint went through the little slit under the visor and into my open eye. Hurt like hell and I couldn’t open my eye for a good bit. The worst part was having to keep my mask on until I got off the field. Really not a great design for a mask to have an open ventilation slit right under your eyeball.

Paul

There was a Green Day stage musical that did pretty well but it was out around the same time as Book of Mormon so it was not getting all the buzz, there was no air in the room.

Tyler

It was the McCaughey (pronounced McCoy) septuplets. I don't think Matthew McConaughey has that many kids.

Dan Z

Before Dookie, Green Day had Kerplunk so it's not their first album! And Billie Joe is 5ft7 not 5ft3. I'm gonna have to doc Bob 2 points for Green Day facts and another point for short man disrespect

Jonathan

Kerplunk rules, also as a lifelong paintballer, the pain keeps the adrenalin going and makes it more fun and exiting, at least for me.

Sara

Green Day released 3 EPs, plus a full length album called Kerplunk! before Dookie. loving the podcast dudes

Bob Mackey

Folks, I own all of the pre-Dookie CDs and they're currently inside a dusty album in my apartment.

I've always wondered if it's a joke that Cane's line of "Good Lord! That could start a fire." is meant to be the most old man reaction and wording to seeing a small flame. Just to play with the feelings of age throughout the episode.

Andrew O.

About 10 years ago my mother passed away in the spring. Later that fall I started a new job and was making friends with a co-worker. We're bantering back and forth, and I whip out a titular "yo mamma" joke to which he responded very straight-faced "my mother is dead". I apologize and continue with "mine passed away too, this spring". He looked like a deer caught in the headlights and meekly replied "uh... my mom isn't really dead..." and looked away. "Oh..." *queue awkward silence*

nina matsumoto

I've always wanted to try paintball let's go Bob let's gooo I wanna gooooo

Ben

How can we talk about Green Day and movie trailers without the most hilariously awful thing ever: “Brain Stew featuring Godzilla”. You can endlessly write your own jokes based on the title alone, but for me nothing beats hitting play for scant seconds before I’m dying laughing. I honestly don’t know if I’ve ever listened to more than half a minute of it, but those 30 seconds are quality comedy. Give it a try! https://youtu.be/AgEPJRWfP7c

Manic Rainbow

I have a hard time hearing Jim Cummings ever since I found out he is a conservative wacko with credible me too allegations. He’s one of the best voice actors of all time, but I can’t overlook his problematic opinions. Great episode tho, and I completely agree with your thoughts on the Green Day song “Good Riddance”.

Drew Frisbie

Good Riddance is my class song so I feel your guys pain

SlothIsLegend

Cane is voiced by Tre Cool, the drummer, not Billie Joe. Shut down the podcast, fired for that blunder, et cetera et cetera

Kris

I saw the joke about Cane going "three down... one to go" less him being dumb and more him not remembering how many people are actually in Hank's group

Bill Fergus

When I first met who would soon become one of my best friends in middle school, I made a joke about his mom and he told me that his mom was dead. I replied laughing and joking like, "yeah right". Then he was like no seriously she died last year of cancer. But he was cool about it and laughed and now we're still good friends. And the life insurance joke is funny because Bill of all people doesn't have a need for life insurance cuz he has no dependents.
