The early '90s brought about an opportunity for Disney to stop being so precious with their content in the form of MovieToons: cheaper, smaller movies that could be done outside of Burbank. And while this new brand eventually led to direct-to-video billions, it all started with 1990's DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp. The first and only DuckTales theatrical outing, Treasure of the Lost Lamp amounts to a big learning process for Disney—and some growing pains for their soon-to-be-notable French studio struggling with their first big feature. So listen in and get ready for a podcast that'll inexplicably make you say "Shabooey!"

I just watched this movie for this podcast and it was... an interesting experience, to say the least. You could definitely tell this was a cheaper production than the rest of the big theatrical Disney productions at times. Glad to know I wasn’t crazy in thinking this film was kinda ass lol. You guys should talk about bad things more often. WAC’s shitting on things are hilarious XD

Yeah, I'm surprised there isn't any warning for this movie, or in the DuckTales episode Dijon appears in, "Attack of the Metal Mites". And its not like Disney+ isn't aware of the stuff in their Disney Afternoon shows. The Lion King's Timon and Pumbaa have warnings in front of episodes with offensive stereotypes.

Sorry for putting this one on you! Fun to hear a forgotten and middling/mediocre or outright bad movie sometimes though. But ouch, having to watch it twice.

I basically only knew Rip Taylor from his Wayne’s World 2 cameo, although I don’t recall ever thinking “Who the heck is that?” I guess his bit is simple enough that you don’t need a ton of familiarity with him to get it. He also makes a non-cameo (voiced by Dan) in the season 20 Treehouse of Horror, as the subject of a joke that Tim Long has said is the funniest pitch he ever heard in the writers’ room.

This reminded me how awesome Ducktales 2017 is by comparison. I had fond memories of this movie that evaporated completely by the end of the episode given how aggressively mediocre/outright bad the movie is. Also how awesome is it that they took Dijon and completely redeemed the character in d17? I say ... reasonably awesome

Another great movie podcast, just revisited this on D+ to see it in 4K. I missed this in theaters, while my family typically did not miss a Disney theatrical release at this time, I think my parents got the impression this was another film of spliced together episodes of the TV show, so I didn’t see this until the rental release. At the time I remember just thinking it was nothing special, and thought the golden goose arc was more interesting than the subject matter in Lost Lamp. Rewatching it now, the sheer cringe of Dijon aside, my opinion hasn’t changed too much, it’s basically a special multi-part episode of the series with the core characters but nothing too spectacular. To your point, it would have been great to see TMS’ take on this film but I’m not sure if that would have swayed me at all, other than potentially looking a lot better than the final product.

Talking about how Merlock should have just transformed into a dragon and killed everyone to get the map back. I feel this deep in my bones but about The Mummy (the brendon frasier one) - how the guardians of this ancient evil have been protecting the mummies tomb for centuries but instead of killing anyone who gets close they just tell them "dont fuck around" and then leave! WTF! a world ending evil monster should have better safeguards in place.

You bring up that Merlock scared you as a kid and am baffled...was there a particular scene of him that scared your wimpy child self?

I thought that I loved Ducktales as a 5 year old, but now I think I only like it because of regret. I forced my aunt and mother to take my brother, and cousin to see Ducktales: TotLL, I was 6 at the time and I did not make it all the way though. It was at the scene where the nephews and Webby were in the backyard with the hang glider, train and other toys that they had wished for. I was like mom buy me that train, but 6 year old me couldn’t understand that we were dirt poor and I would never own a ride on train. So, 6 year old me walked out of the theater and mom asked aunt Maxine to bring my brother home after the film was over. Mom also said that we would not go to another animated feature for a long time because of my selfishness. I understand now that Gizmo Duck’s story was more interesting than this film. “I am M.E.L. Master Electronic Leader!” Even all these years later I cannot really enjoy watching Ducktales LotLL, because I just feel guilty of when I was 6 making my mom spend her hard earned money on treating her spoiled son on a movie that in the end he didn’t like. I’m sorry Ma!

I had this on VHS back in the day. It was the only DuckTales material I really had. I tried looking for it on DVD, saw it was exclusive to the Disney Movie Club, I figured i'd never see it again. Then in May 2016 I found it at Walmart and snatched it up. Yeah, this movie kind of sucks.

If we're judging this movie by other feature-length multiparters that original Ducktales did, I would still put this over the "Time Is Money" five-parter (the one that introduced Bubba) Treasure of the Lost Lamp at least spared us an extended musical number about why the new character introduced in this event is cool.

This movie isn't *bad*, but boy does it sure sag... after the opening 20 minutes, and struggle to keep your attention for the rest of the runtime. Aladdin really did make a lot better use of the Genie concept, and you know, being a better move in general
