How dare you suggest no one remembers the Soul Asylum classic "Misery Inc," which was forever immortalized in the cinematic masterpiece, Clerks 2. Nah, I'm just joshing you, that band was actually quite annoying! Long live that filthy scab, Flexo.

In regards to Flexo's quip, "As long as she's not -2".... Since a negative number times a negative number results in a positive number, and a square of a number is the number times itself, a negative square root shouldn't be possible. It's why in math the square root of a negative number is called an imaginary number. Not sure if it's the intent of the joke, but you could interpret "As long as she's not -2" as, "As long as she's not imaginary" - like as long as your girlfriend actually exists and you're not deluding yourself. Realistically, it's probably more about age appropriateness, but with David X. Cohen, nerdy math jokes are always on the table!

We were specifically told if we throw our morterboards we wouldn't be allowed to collect our actual diploma (I doubt they could actually do this, buuut)

With the 2nd mention of Pee Wee's Big Adventure I demand a movie review of it. Invoked the April Fools rule

I guess, in wrestling terms, Bender really "worked himself into a shoot, brother". ^_^ Btw, you asked about the UK; I haven't heard anyone use "Bender" as a gay slur since Futurama came out. Granted, that was around the time I left school (so less likely to hear it anyway), but I prefer to think that the popularity of Futurama changed its social context and made the world a slightly better place. Loved the podcast. Keep up the awesome work. Bam!

With Elzar in this again, it still fascinates me my wife has almost no knowledge of who Emril is. He was just as a guest a new Masterchef season. And she's a huge Gordon Ramsay fan but I guess missed the earlier aughts cooking boom when Emril and Iron Chef were huge deals.

Interesting to hear your grad school didn't have a graduation ceremony. Thought most grad schools had them, I know we had one since my sister and family urged me to go do it, since for undergrad they had to split up ceremonies

FWIW I think the "South American" part of "South American Turkish Prison" is a reference to Papillon.

Speaking of Tom Schiller's old "Love Is A Dream" SNL sketch, I'd recommend you track down his infamously never released film "Nothing Lasts Forever". Like all his work, it's funny and sad and weirdly beautiful. It also features Lauren Tom in a very significant role! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15Tz2098pm4

In case anyone were wondering about the “what the French say about dating”. It’s “the French rule”. Which is you can only date someone half your age plus 7. So the youngest a 30 year old could date would 22. Btw don’t shoot the messenger, I didn’t invent this, it’s a real adage. There’s also a joke about there being a Thai rule which is half your age minus 7, which I think is a joke about sex tourism. So yeah it’s a depressing world we live in.
