It's too cliche, we won't say it... Well, ok, fine, it's time again for our premium monthly podcast! By 1997 things we're as stable in Disney Feature Animation as before, but directors John Musker and Ron Clements were going to go the distance with this Greek tale of commercialism and insider Hollywood references. Can it all come together with an underrated soundtrack, a bland lead character, and a villain played by a guy who belongs in hell? Listen to our lengthy discussion to find out!

Why doesn’t Hercules fly up to Olympus, he has Pegasus? Google Bellerophon 😂 Love the show guys! Making my way through WAC!

I’m way late , I discovered you guys so late so I’ve finally caught up with all the Simpsons / King of the Hill and what a cartoon movies the amount of times y’all shit on treasure planet 😭 I watched that movie like 10 years after it came out and I was so disappointed in myself cause I loved it so much . Maybe because I love the Jim Hawkins / Long John Silver relationship so I’m a sucker for this movie (and muppet treasure island lmao) I hope y’all watch it soon - even if you don’t do a what a cartoon on it . But id love to hear what y’all think of it without the emotional attachment. Every time I hear you bring it up my first though it “I’ve had just about enough of your Vassar bashing” 😂😂

Maybe it's a Canadian thing, but growing up if I ever woke up too early on Saturday morning, I would be treated to a few 5 minute episodes of The Mighty Hercules animated series from the 60's. This is what comes up when I think of old Hercules media. I wonder if you guys will ever look at this show, maybe there's an interesting story to it and its creators...

Lorin Bernsen

Jack Nicholson was the first choice for Hades?? To quote Dana Carvey’s Johnny Carson, “I DID NOT know that!” Actually, aside from Gerald Scarfe doing the initial character designs, there’s A LOT of stuff I didn’t know about the making of this film. THANKS, Guys! 👍

Just to play devil's advocate, I've played poker with James Woods multiple times and he was polite and affable at the tables, definitely not a real-life version of his reactionary twitter. It did suck that once Trump got elected, MAGA hat wearers would approach him at the table, say dumb shit, expect him to act simpatico, and then get butthurt that he was too busy playing poker to celebrate right-wing attitudes with them.

Great episode, dudes. A note, terpsichore is pronounced terp-sick-o-ree (the trucker lady in Cowboy Bebop is named that)

In Hera’s defense, she’s probably pissed at the irony of being the Goddess of Marriage and having a real dog of a husband I’m gonna defend the “hero” thing in that when Hercules is fighting the Hydra and other monsters it’s because he just wants the glory and to be a god, when he rescues Meg, it’s to protect her, he cares about her more than his godhood. The most concise arc Hercules seems to have is learning he doesn’t need his godhood, it’s messy, but it’s there Great episode as always fellas, thanks for getting me through a long work day!

"This has a lot in common with Shrek, Cool World, and Ducktales." - Bob "Servo" Mackey (On the topic of Disney's Hercules) Yes. They're all the exact same thing, IMO.

Tricia

I couldn’t be the only kid who actively loathed the adult contemporary cover that’s put in every Disney credits, it’s probably a reward for the parents that watched with their kids but for young me an electric piano means it’s time to change vhs tapes

ShyRanger

Hercules may be strong, but I bet Kazuya can beat him.

Kris

I don't understand the treasure planet hate... I liked treasure planet and a lot of my friends loved that movie

Lorin Bernsen

I bought a bunch of the Hercules action figures during the height of my toy collecting phase. They & the Hunchback ones were all on clearance sales at K-B Toys.

crystalhearts

Much like Henry I was also continually reminded of Hades which is a much, much more satisfying interpretation of Greek myth than this thing lol

Kris

Ive only seen Hercules like once or twice... And some how I know all the songs by heart

Ryan Oliver

I come for the memories about classic films of my youth, I stay for the in-depth analysis of a fur and flesh wedgie. By the way, I agree that a flesh wedgie would be testicles up the butt.

Jacob Reed

I was unaware of a large amount of toys that Hercules got because I never encountered most of it, but I will say my family and I went to Disney World in 2000 and one of the gift shops we ended up visiting was absolutely littered with stuffed animal versions of Baby Pegasus. My sister ended up getting one, and she carried it around everywhere. She may even still have the thing somewhere. Anyways, although the character of Pegasus is just another horse that behaves like a dog, the baby version of him from the beginning of the movie was I think the only viable option for a stuffed toy. They certainly did hit the nail on the head there, cause that thing was soft, cute, and 100% huggable

mavrick

yes, the EMPERORS new groove totally had a KING in charge. something something fired for that blunder etc...

Alex Atchley

Weirdly enough, this is the only movie I own on YouTube. Bought it years ago when I was an English teacher and we were studying Greek mythology, so I had to watch it 8 times in the span of a week :| ALSO: I finally broke down and started reading Disney War since y'all have mentioned it a few times here and in other podcasts. It is honestly a lot better than I thought it would be.

JoshuaMartian

I get the feeling the in-joke about using Scar as a pelt is because Andrea Deja was the supervising for Scar just before Hercules!

Dylan

Treasure Planet rules and the corny ass Goo Goo Dolls soundtrack is good

Little more on the cancelled direct-to-video Hercules sequel: It was being made at the same overseas studio in France that made the DuckTales movie, and acclaimed French animation director Sylvain Chomet (who you might know best for The Triplets of Belleville) actually worked at the studio for a few months. He described what it was like there thusly: "The atmosphere was bizarre. They had such a cynical way of thinking. I came in and said, 'I can do some designs [for the Hercules sequel],' and they said (he mimics a cynical person), 'OK. Yeah. That's fine.' When I worked there, I realized what not to do on a feature film. They have this mentality they're trying to do 'product' -- they don't make films anymore, it's like they do advertisements now. People are very talented there but there's no soul."

Tashmon Dimps

Nice podcast fellas! As an embarrassingly young listener of this show, I must inform you that Bobcat Goldthwait has performed using that voice pretty much up until the mid 2010’s I most know him as the voice of Pop Fizz, one of the dozens of Skylanders from that series of games/toys. While he technically only recorded one session for the game he starred in, he was cast again when it came time to create a Netflix cartoon based on the games (when it was entirely too late for the franchise to feasibly stay afloat). Guess he had enough lozenges to afford doing that voice up until 2016 lol Just felt like pointing this out bc you guys made it sound like he hasn’t done anything in that voice since this film

A friend of mine once made a joke that Hercules was addicted to plastic surgery. He changed the lyrics of Go the Distance to be “I can get some implants” and I’ve never been able to hear the song the same way without laughing about that.

Matty

Totally agree with you that Hercules is a lower tier disney movie. However I have to admit that the music has had a lasting impact on me. Not only is "Won't Say I'm in Love" one of my favorite Disney songs. "Go the Distance" was the song that soothed my son after he was born. I have sang it to him at least twice a night before bed for the past 4 years and it will always have a special place in my heart. I fear for the day many years from now when I'll be brought to tears by instrumental alone. Thinking of the small curly haired infant i used to rock to sleep.

I LOVED this movie as a kid - in terms of 90s Disney movies, it was really only second to Mulan for me. Happily, I still do like it a lot as an adult, though it's ranking may have fallen a few places. Its definitely got its story issues and a weak final battle, plus the Superman parallels get a bit tedious (I couldn't stop thinking about them just watching the movie on my own before listening to Henry discuss it at length), but it's still such a fun adventure with great leads. -- I totally had one of those McDonalds Hercules chalice cups as a kid, and I've gotta say I think the thing that irks me the most about this as an adult is the movie's weird jokes/critique of commercialization that are so goddamn hollow because of their marketing machine (which is even worse 25 years later).

FootFungus

I know it’s not prefect but it’s probably my favorite Disney movie, the game wasn’t too bad either.

Ratchet Shaman

This was the first Disney movie that I vividly remember the promo material for. They aired a making of special before release that focused on the CG of the hydra scene specifically. My anticipation was at full mast for this one and I loved it when I saw it in theaters (though I remember wanting more Titan action). The Muses were a big hit with me and my family and honestly are the secret ingredient that puts this one over for me. Always a treat to see the majesty of black gospel vocals NOT be used in service of religious dogmatic conquest.
