We celebrate the holidays in the summer with returning pal Eric Szyszka from the We Hate Movies podcast! The kids are trapped in the school, Ned and Homer brave a blizzard, and somehow that leads to jokes about camels and ball sacks. We sort through the weirdest Xmas episode ever on this week's podcast, so listen before it's on your permanent record!

Shoulda been Cabin cause snow...cabin...i'll let myself out

"The Christmas that Almost Wasn't But then Was" has some serious "Babes in Toyland"/"March of the Wooden Soldiers" vibes to it. It's a Laurel and Hardy vehicle where they're toymakers contracted by Santa Claus. In-between some very funny slapstick are some really excruciating songs by "Tom the Pipers Son" singing to "Little Bo-Peep". The overarching threat are a bunch of badly costumed "Bogeymen" (who thankfully don't dance like those in the SImpson's version). Not parodied are the genuinely nightmare inducing Mickey Mouse puppet (Producer Hal Roach was good friends with Walt Disney), and the Three Little Pigs whose costumes that look like they're melting. It's in the public domain, so "Babes in toyland" always got a lot of play on TV and cheap VHS tapes.

I find it interesting that The Simpsons was priced-out of KISS when Family Guy would feature KISS (and that specific song) just a year later. Maybe KISS knocked down the price of the song since they also were featured as guest actors and weren't really being made fun of. I can see appealing to the vanity of a guy like Gene Simmons being most beneficial during negotiations. I very much enjoy this light Christmas special. There are some easy jokes in it, but I'll stand up for them since they did make me laugh. Now, lets all enjoy a hearty chew of our ball sacks!

To really strike home the disparity in cost of living I bought a 1200sqft 3b 2.5ba house in 2016 on $36k a year living in a country town 30 miles outside DC. A house 1 mile closer would be completely unmanageable. I had zero loans or debts and a fully paid junker but one emergency or surprise cost would’ve thrown me into a death spiral. In 4 years my house has almost doubled in value because the cost of living creeped further south and everyone wants to move here to commute. It really highlights the extreme burden of living in this country: you have to live near a city for a good job that won’t pay you enough to live there so highways are congested with commuters with no good mass transit options that migrate further and further out of the radius of economic centers. I got lucky in my timing but I literally light my grill using junk mail from bloodsucking investment firms that want to pay me less than my house was worth a decade ago so they can rent it out for 4x my mortgage.

Wanted to add some random trivia for you guys, but Dodi Fayed’s dad, Mohamed Al Fayed, owned Fulham FC football club, and had a statue of Michael Jackson erected outside of it. So yeah, typical billionaire things.

XXX State of the Union is another all black sequel. It came out in that brief moment Vin Diesel refused to do sequels. He had to be bribed with being given ownership of the movie rights to his baby Riddick to come back to the Fast franchise. Of course now, he's all about that paper and has long since scrapped that "no sequels" rule.

First off: as Homer snaps back to reality from his fume induced haze and Flanders' voice goes back to normal, does he not just sound like Lenny to anyone else? (Obviously Shearer voices both of em, so it's not a conspiracy, just not something that happens often.) -- Ontarian checking in - I've lived in Ottawa all my life, and for my entire grade school/high school career, I was specifically out in the country side. In peak winter (let's say in those days December-February) we'd often get a big downpour of snow every so often, which would wreak havoc on the roads. However, since the school board who determined when they'd cancel school buses and enact a snow day was DOWNTOWN, they would always have much better road conditions then out in more rural or suburban areas of the city, and there were FAR TOO MANY a time where they'd say it was safe enough for a regular school day, only for snow or freezing rain to make it so that we would be anywhere from 1 to 2 hours late, on top of my already 50 minute bus ride. When we actually DID get snow days, they were always a blessing, and I'm glad I finished high school long before the days of Zoom.

I never noticed Skinner had a toupee, it never even crossed my mind, and even now I refuse to believe it

Evil Chanteuse's Dork Lair

I never really cared about this episode before, but after hearing this episode AND rewatching the episode I am 100% in love with it and it might be my fav episode now. It’s just like. Insane and nonsensical. It hates the audience for caring but in a way that a punk musician tries to provoke their audience to make them love the show even more. It’s masterfully bad and that’s the point. HONK! HONK

Rewatching this one, I realized that almost all of Skinner’s lines in Tapped Out are from this episode, and it was funny to hear them in context.

I went to a "Jr.-Sr." High, Grades 7 through 12. 7th and 8th grade occupied a section of the building and had a separate lunch time. The instant tell of 7th graders were that their whole classes would have to walk in a line together to the bathroom. I always thought of this episode because my school would try its damndest to never close for snow days. Our school district had a bunch of built-in "snow days" that would extend most 3 day weekends to 4, extend winter break etc. So an unscheduled snow day always felt bittersweet. When the weather got super bad, the district would cheat by calling a 2-hour delay, then once classes started, call an early dismissal. Lot of weird 10am to 1pm school days where all you do is watch movies and eat lunch. Oh yeah, Buzzfeed is still around. They bought Huffington Post last year and laid off a ton of staff.

i’ve commented this before and i’m here to comment again: the “chew through my ball sack” line is an all-timer

Our schools always closed by county, so the idea of one single elementary school remaining open just destroyed my suspension of disbelief for this episode.

This episode is so underrated! My favorite xmas special (I put it on each xmas) and def in my top 5 episodes. Absolute highlight is "The Christmas That Almost Wasn't But Then Was," when the sheep tips over I lose it 🎄

To comment on Kiss wanting too much money and Gene probably having never seen the show, surprisingly Gene co-wrote a story in Bongo Comics Treehouse of Horror #10. Bill Morrison agreed to let a friend of his write a story after claiming he could get Gene involved, never expecting him to pull it off. Bill tells the whole story in episode 32 of my podcast, just in case your interested!
