We're halfway through 2021 and we hope everyone is enjoying our podcasts as much as we've enjoyed making them! We've got more big guests coming soon, some really cool podcast subjects are heading your way, and we're due for another of our monthly $10 premium podcasts, so we'll need your help to decide what we'll be covering in August.

As you might know by now, we're staying so far ahead in podcast recordings that we've already recorded July's What A Cartoon Movie! (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), meaning that in July we have enough extra time to record our August 2021 movie podcast, and we can start on that as soon as you choose the subject for us!

For those of you who are new to the Talking Simpsons Patreon, WELCOME. Also, you should know that once a month we release the What A Cartoon Movie! podcast, an extra-long discussion about an animated feature film, exclusively for our $10+ Patreon subscribers. And when we open up the voting for each month's subject, we want all the $5 subscribers to also have a chance to be heard too, so those subscribers can help pick episodes they might enjoy down the line!

Our next 2021 poll is the end of the trilogy for our Summer of Disney Renaissance! For August we're going to let you choose our next film subjects from the formative years of Disney's modern era of theatrical animation!

So here are the four early '90s Disney films you'll be voting on:

Beauty And The Beast (1991), the tale as old as time and a song as old as rhyme, it's the first animated film to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar!

The Lion King (1994), be prepared for a shining new era with this animalistic play on Hamlet that changed Disney animation from that point forward!

The Little Mermaid (1989), it's better down where it's wetter in the gorgeous film that rebirthed the Disney theatrical studio just as the '80s ended!

Pocahontas (1995), Disney's misguided attempt at showing us the colors of the wind, one that misses the mark in interesting ways!

So please, make your choice known before the poll closes on the night of August 7! And thanks as always for your continued support of our podcasts—we couldn't keep doing all our super-deep movie podcasts without you!

Initially I went with Lion King bc it’s the one I grew up with, but I realized I’ve really never given Little Mermaid a shot and I want an excuse to watch a super important movie.

Andrew O.

Ugh, you people have such terrible taste when voting for movies... lol

Paul

I demand the implementation of ranked choice voting, Patreon

Angel Young

As an apology for Cool World and because I was just watching Jose's Home Improvement retrospective, I am voting the Lion King.

Neil Rao

voted Pocahontas despite it being my least favorite of the options. doesn’t look like it’ll be covered any time soon though based on the results :p

Blake R.

Pocahontas is easily the worst of the bunch (and arguably the only bad movie among them) but man I feel like it would lead to some of the best discussions

ToonJay723

Rooting for The Little Mermaid. In my opinion the best film in this era. Beautiful cel animation, great songs, and is fun rather than "important".

SomeBloke

I think normally I'd vote for Pocahontas as the "unpack this messy thing" option but, honestly, after the reminder of the dire stretch that preceded the Hercules podcast I felt kind of bad. So... eh, The Lion King.

Josh Crystal

I'm hoping for Pocahontas only because it's the one I've seen least and know nothing about the production of. I also still have nightmares about this time I went to the Museum of Sex in NYC and there was a display showing a large stuffed pillow of the raccoon from the movie high up on a plexiglass shelf so you could see the anatomically correct modification it had. *shudder*

Nick G.

Rooting for the Little Mermaid so I can remember what Roger Ebert was talking about

treby

I am mostly only interested in the history segment of these so I guess Little Mermaid as it's the earliest entry.

Dan Motta

Imagine the fucked up fun of Beauty and the Beast!

Frank Grimes

Personally would go for LK, since it's one of my favorites, but for historical purposes (and a good tie in for the upcoming remake) LM should be winning and leading (and which i voted for). The film that sparked the modern Renaissance! We really should have done this in order, if we wanted to celebrate properly...although that might be the ocd in me.

Tyler The Destroyer

my vote is for lion king or mermaid personally I enjoy mermaid more but Lion King is more dear to my past

KaiserBeamz

Gotta vote for Little Mermaid because you gotta end the Disney Renaissance Summer with the first Disney Renaissance movie.

Tricia

Once again I’m in the minority of wanting you guys to talk about Beauty and the Beast

Joey Joe Joe Shabadoo

I'm kind of surprised by all the Pocahontas hate. I watched it again recently and while I agree it's not as good as the others, it's message is a bit misguided and it completely rewrites what actually happened. It is a gorgeous movie, the songs are delightful, and it's not nearly as cringey as I thought it would be. I think it definitely has some intrinsic value. It's leagues better than Cool World at least.

Sabrina

This was such a hard choice! I agree with several of the other comments that it should be Little Mermaid for historical purposes.

Severin Murray

Vastly prefer Little Mermaid to anything that followed, but you guys deserve to get to talk about movies you like after what you’ve been through, so I voted Lion King.

Nicholas S Anderson

Really pulling for The Little Mermaid (chronological order). But will be happy with any one of these.

is marcy still burning

Beauty and the Beast is my personal favorite of these 4 but I think Lion King would make for the most interesting cast. Please just don't fall for the Kimba the white lion trap most of that argument is either lies or coincidences blown completely out of proportion.

John-Charles Holmes

Finally, a WAC Movie poll that you guys won't just vote for the worst movie in a landslide! It doesn't look like its gonna stick the landing, but Beauty & the Beast just gets my vote for - being the best of the renaissance - history of Howard Ashman - some of the best animation from Disney's best modern animators can be found here - having some of the best documented production of all of Disney's features

Kiefer Fulsom

“I’ll say it before and I’ll say it again, Democracy just doesn’t work.” For real though, despite the results I’m going for Little Mermaid it’s definitely my favorite of the group and let’s be honest all 4 of these choices have interesting backstories behind their production (there’s also a version of Beauty and the Beast that is NOTHING like what we needed up with), also URSULA. Come on, I will argue she’s one of the greatest Disney villains of all time.

crystalhearts

mermaid: the correct choice beauty and the beast: acceptable lion king: this would be good too pocahontas: I beg of you not to allow two white men to do a podcast about this lol

Alex Irish

Pocahontas is thankfully NOT leading

Recreational_Hate

I would absolutely love to see you all talk about the little mermaid. It doesn't look like it's gonna happen this time but that day if it happens I'll be so happy. Lion king is still awesome too.

Tanner Methven

Knew it would be lion king but I was kinda hoping the podcast would finally cover one of the Disney Princess movies. Not a slight at Lion King btw.

Andrew

I’m pulling for Little Mermaid. One of my favorites growing up, and still just as great when I watched it last year at a bachelor party.

Lucas London

Lion King is very nostalgic to me but I feel that it's the most overrated Disney film. I just don't enjoy watching it like the others.
