This week we've got two huge guests: Returning favorite (and creator of OK K.O.) Ian Jones-Quartey along with newcomer (and creator of Steven Universe) Rebecca Sugar! And they're joining us to talk about one of their all-time favorite cartoons, Future Boy Conan! How did Hayao Miyazaki get to direct his first series? How many artists did it influence globally for the last four decades? Why is it so hard to see in the US? We discuss all that plus the second episode "The Journey" all on this week's major podcast!

I love Future Boy Conan, he wrote some of my favorite episodes of Future Boy The Simpsons

I was pleasantly surprised that Rebecca Sugar seems to understand the correct framing of the climate crisis better than the average “leftist.”

Japanese pedantry incoming: the opening song lyric you're thinking of is "konna ni" which means "this much". "Dakara" is "because." The order of words is reversed because of how Japanese grammar works. Konna ni chikyuu ga suki dakara = Because I love the earth this much

I absolutely adore this show and I couldn't ask for a better pair of guests to talk about it with you. I'm glad you mentioned the similarities between Conan and Goku because I have a crockpot theory/observation that several shonen anime characters fight a giant fish as a feat of strength. The earliest example I know of was actually Takahashi's directorial debut (and one of Miyazaki's earliest jobs) Horus the prince of the son. Where Horus has an extended underwater fight scene against a giant pike and defeats it by trapping it under rocks. Then post Dragonball there's Gon from Hunter x Hunter and Luffy from One Piece. Gon catches the lord of the lake and Luffy punches the sea king that ate Shanks' arm. One thing I wish was discussed is how Future Boy Conan was used in a recent anime, 2020's Keep Your Hands Off Eizoken the first episode opens with the main character watching a legally distinct version of Conan and it having such a profound effect on her she decides to become an animator. It's one of my favorite scenes in anything, it perfectly encapsulates what it's like to be an animation fan and seeing something so eye opening it changes how you think about the medium.

If you like this you must watch Keep Your Hands off Eizouken, a love letter to Conan and the craft of animation. The first episode kicks off with the protagonist watching Conan, itself reanimated frame by frame because they had rights to the name but not the original animation.

Thank you so much for this episode! This is one of those shows that was always whispered about but I'd never seen. After watching the first 3 eps, I'm completely sold and I can't believe it basically doesn't exist in the US. The scene with the rocks in ep 2 I found incredibly moving and really loved the discussion you had around it. It seemed like there was even more research than usual put into this episode, how long has this one been in the making?

Once again talking Simpsons wills something good into the world as GKids just announced the NA rights with a 4K remaster.

Tashmon Dimps

Can’t wait to listen to this podcast after I get that brand new GKIDS remaster

Joe Hodgson

Impeccable timing, I'm starting to think GKids is a secret backer of Talking Simpsons. I've never sought this series out, but was aware it existed, and the upcoming release coupled with this podcast seems like the right time to take the dive. I'll be sure to hold up a sign from my couch as I watch that remaster that reads "Bob and Henry put my ass in this seat," in tribute.

2026-09-07 10:00 This is something I had heard about in name only, which of course makes a lot of sense with the context this podcast provided about its supreme lack of availability in North America. I was planning to continue watching the other 24 episodes of this since I thoroughly enjoyed the first two and this podcast just made me even more interested at the story to come, but now with the recent Blu-Ray & English dub news, I'm wondering if I should just wait til that's out...

Maybe cuz I’m a dirty Weeb, I was listening to the beginning while eating breakfast and when they called her (the Jessie character ) I immediately said to no one, “her name is Doronjo!” 😅
