The day long promised by our guest (and one of our top Patreon supporters), Devin, has finally arrived! We cover one of the silliest and most banal animated shows of all time, Hanna-Barbera's adaptation of the Gary Marshall classic, Laverne & Shirley. We chart how the success of the Happy Days universe of shows in the 1970s led to this Saturday morning cartoon in 1981, plus some interesting facts about how this odd show came to be. So get ready to enlist alongside a pig in this week's podcast!

THANK U DEVIN for bringing this evil to us

Lorin Bernsen

Now I desperately want to hear a What A Cartoon episode about Hanna-Barbera’s Pac-Man.

I tried to watch this one before the podcast, I really did, but holy shit, that opening alone is like being beaten over the head with a hammer. The distilled essence of the kind of show you'd catch exactly one rerun of on that one day you woke up really early and turned on Cartoon Network, forever dooming you to conversations where your friends think you're full of it.

God you guys need to talk about trash more often. This was a hilarious episode! Plus, I got a little lesson in TV history, which is always appreciated.

What a show. I’m very curious to hearing what the deal was with the pig. The plot is something one of my nine-year-old students would have concocted.

Shoutout to Devin for uploading this on YouTube because if I didn’t see it I wouldn’t believe how trashy it was. (I hit the thumbs up button but no, I did not “like” it)

There's only one show that I can think of that went from normal to jump the shark crazy like Happy Days did: Family Matters! By season 9 they would have had Steve Urkel clones, a robot, Urkel and Carl Bruce Lees, and other crazy shenanigans. This made me think, "Why didn't Family Matters get a bad cartoon spin off that What a Cartoon can make fun of?" Well, my prayers have been answered reading this on the Wikipedia page: "On September 1, 2021, it was announced an animated Christmas film Did I Do That to the Holidays? A Steve Urkel Story will air on Cartoon Network as part of the upcoming block ACME Night" Come on guys. You gotta do an episode on this!

This show must be the reason Bob and Henry cut back on What A Cartoon.

Just... what the hell is this show? Already the premise of "these women from Happy Days who had a spin-off about working at a bottling plant, but now they're in the army" was ridiculous but then immediately there's a talking pig and an attempted alien invasion. You guys perfectly covered how insane and awful this show is, but my god there was a lot of whiplash from putting it on not knowing what to expect.
