As we reach the end of the shortest month of the year, we welcome back the fantastic artist Nina Matsumoto (check out her upcoming Sparks! Future Purrfect graphic novel) as our first in-person guest in forever to help us recount it! We chat about many Simpsons anniversaries, the return of Futurama without John DiMaggio, and lots more animation news. We also chat about all the fun we've been getting up to the last few weeks and preview some upcoming podcasts. Finally, we respond to our fave Patreon comments for Simpsons, Futurama, King of the Hill, and What A Cartoon! Listen now to learn how a shrinking serum also shrinks a costume!

I'm glad someone other than myself enjoyed Nightmare Alley. I highly recommend the original as well. It's also two hours, currently available on youtube unless you want to spring for the blu-ray

Yeah the futurama news is something people yelling about do it for the fans not the money. It his job and he trying to get everyone up too besides Hulu not free own by Disney they have the money.

Ah super 7 ReAction McBain probably already know reaction is more wall art then toy I mean they ok out of box just don’t move that much. 17.99 is a bit to much for they but hey it mcbain and not a funko

If you want to go down memory lane with "Homer at the Bat," I recommend the 2017 "doc" "Springfield of Dreams." It was produced by 20th Century and Fox Sports to celebrate Fox's anniversary of broadcasting the World Series and to celebrate Homer's induction into the baseball hall of fame. It was directed by Morgan Spurlock, but they got just about everyone from the episode to sit down for an in-character interview (which the player's are surprisingly cromulent at) as well as the cast of the show (playing their characters with new animation) and certain news and historical figures. Most of them (if not all), like Bob Costas, were chosen because they appeared in Ken Burns' Baseball and that's the basic setup for the episode. I have no idea if the fact that it was a Fox Sports co-production means Disney doesn't own it outright, but you can find it streaming for free on the web and it's about 45 minutes without commercials. Those McBane figures are really tempting. Super7's ReAction line is not really my bag. They're an homage to old Kenner Star Wars figures from the 70s so they just move at the head, shoulders, and hips and are very basic. I think most who collect them do it for the card art as much as the figure and hang them on a wall or something. The simple approach does work well for Simpsons though, and they're way cheaper than the other figures (about 18 bucks a piece, so still probably a lot if you haven't been buying toys over recently). They hinted that the next line in this style from Simpsons will be similar in approach, so McGarnagle might not be as a deep a cut as it would appear (my bet would probably be a wave of Troy McClure roles). I watched all of Disenchantment part IV already out of fear you guys might talk about it on this very podcast. It was fine, but this "season" was the one I felt most hampered by the Netflix serialized format. It just doesn't breathe and the characters (except for Zog) are always pursuing something or investigating something, but the plot is just not interesting enough. It sort of felt like watching the Futurama movies which struggled to make a 100 minute plot fulfilling. The characters are still enjoyable and the performances are great, but the format is just really letting the show down. And not to get spoilery, but it still ends with a cliffhanger and considering it might not be coming back I felt kind of cheated. I was hoping this would end this chunk of stories with at least something of a resolution, but apparently not.

As a parent I completely agree that Paw Patrol is awful. If you are looking for a good kids show with dogs. I would highly recommend the Australian show Bluey. Its one of the best written show for preschoolers I've ever scene. Its an extremely wholesome show that doesn't talk down to kids. For example The episode "Early Baby" delves into the topic of premature births. I don’t know if it would work for a WAC due to each episode being 8mn but it’s a show worth checking out.

I appreciate Bob's annoyance at the same Pixar "fact" repeated over and over. As a fan of the studio who's done tons of research into them (including talking to an actual former employee!) it bugs me that people tend to just regurgitate the same few anecdotes about them over and over again. It's either that or "did you know Woody was such a jerk in the original 'Black Friday' version of Toy Story they almost shut down the production?" I think the culprit is actually the Studio Stories short you mentioned: The vast majority of people (including me!) first knew the simplified, happy version of the story through that, and then it's just repeated ad nauseum in clickbait articles and every few months on Twitter, since no one wants to read Oren Jacob going into the technical detail on how it happened and the exact sequence of events. (This also happens with The Pixar Story documentary. It's really the only Pixar history people watch, thus it's where everyone first heard the "Black Friday" story, and it's just been repeated over and over since.) Thank you Henry for giving a shout-out to my comments on Delaware's Steven Universe connection! And for the record, I posted about it on both the Discord and Patreon's comments.

By the end of Disenchantment Pt. 4 it really felt like the crew just wanted to make Futurama episodes again and suddenly the series order made a lot more sense. And, nice, I saw _Moon_ paired with _Sunshine_ too. Also, Cillian Murphy needs to play John Rzeznik in a biopic ASAP! Oh boy, a carnival! Latin@ is the slightly less cringe "latinx".

Mailman again! I had a 13 hour day yesterday, and I was really down. Hearing y'all read my comment and empathize with me meant more than you could've known. I've been a retronauts listener since 2014, and TS/WAC since 2018. Thanks for being in my buds this whole time, I truly look forward to each ep while I work 😁

I’ll take that as a “no” on my Hardwick question. I’m all for Dimaggio trying to get more money! Him lumping the other cast members into his fight (who have all mostly already signed on and seemingly are OK with their pay) is kinda…weird

Bryan Field

I just wanted to say that as much as I enjoy the "Talk to the Audience" episodes, they are so much more fun when Nina is around!

Chris Tar

Honestly the Comedy Central run of Futurama had so many lackluster episodes I can't get excited for it. I mean get payed John but honestly I won't be watching unless the reviews are incredible

Great recap, Interesting to hear that Wind Up Bird Chronicle was a common read in the gaming press. I’m a huge fan of Murakami and would say start with Wild Sheep Chase or Hard Boiled Wonderland & End of the World first, as they’re equally great and a bit shorter / accessible. 1Q84 is his best imo but really long. As for films, ‘Burning’ is also adapted from one of Murakami’s short stories and is a fantastic slow burn and was the Parasite for Korean cinema slightly before Parasite came out.

Could have sworn Disenchantment pt4 had a pt3 recap, cause I clicked on skip recap. Pt 4 ended ho hum. The series has been a real slow burn. I did like some of the revelations made in pt 4, but overall...meh.

I can’t say how much y’all’s ability to pronounce my last name correctly makes my day. Thank you! Also I loved hearing Nina on this episode. And also, I do think Disenchantment part 4 does get better as it progresses. There’s a fuck-ton of fan service, but I don’t mind it.

If you're still looking for a good (old) Paper Mario experience I can't recommend Bug Fables enough, it wears its PM influence on its sleeve to a point where you might just assume it's a lame copycat but both the mechanics and writing are really strong.

mavrick

yay! Sunshine and Moon is my favorite double-feature

I grew up in the 60’s and have always hated Gumby!! Please don’t lay this at my door .

Nina being the first in-person guest since COVID started is only fitting, and frankly she was a blast on this month's community ep so here's hoping she'll reappear on these eps in the future
