“Hold up a sec guys, my pizza’s her—oh! Oh, hey! You’re… not the pizza guy,” said a man who was clearly a gamer bro type who stood in the doorway.
“No, I’m not. I’m looking for a redheaded man named Jason Bjornsson. Does he live here?” Rosa asked, hoping he still did.
“Sorry honey, no redheaded dudes here. Not now at least,” the gamer bro replied while looking her up and down, taking in her lithe form.
“Not now? What do you mean by that?” Rosa asked, shrugging away his unwanted gaze.
“He was the guy who lived here before me, but that dude is long gone! Took off somewhere with a bunch of ladies. Probably living it up with them for all I know,” the man told her, trying to play on any insecurities she might have.
“Do you know where?” she wondered, hoping he would be kind enough to say.
“No dice, sweetie. I might know… but that will take some… convincing on your part!” the man replied with a lascivious wink.
“Pass,” Rosa said with a measure of disgust before turning on her heel and leaving.
“Your loss honey!” the gamer bro called out after her as he stared at her ass as she left.
He closed the door as she neared the stairway door, the door almost slamming shut as he went back to his games. Rosa cursed her luck as she opened the door, thinking she’d have to go on the run again. Just as she put her hand on the doorknob, the door pulled back and opened, admitting an elderly man carrying a bag of groceries and using a cane to move about.
“Oh, my apologies, elder! I didn’t think anyone else was using the stairs!” Rosa said, as they were both startled by the other’s appearance.
“It’s no trouble at all, dearie! I take the stairs to avoid that deathtrap of an elevator!” the man said as he glared down the hall at the door to the mechanical car.
“Glad to see it’s not just me who doesn’t like using such devices. Oh, please, allow me!” Rosa said, taking the groceries from the man so he didn’t have to struggle with carrying them.
“Thank you, young lady! You have good manners! Unlike some of so called ‘women’ of this day. Say, I don’t think I’ve seen you around here before,” the man stated, peering up at her face as they walked down the hall.
“That’s because I’m not from around here. Not this building, anyway. I am here looking for a friend of mine, only to discover that he’s no longer here and has moved away,” Rosa said with a tang of bitterness.
“Let me guess, a ‘boy’ friend?” the man asked with a knowing chuckle.
“Not like that. More like someone who I think could help me out of my… problem,” Rosa said.
“Oh? What kind of problem might that be?” the old man wondered.
“The problem that deals with… family… that is trying to control me. I left them to pursue my own life and live it how I want, but they won’t just leave me be. I thought if I asked him, he might want to help me in… dealing with them,” Rosa told him.
“I see. This friend of yours, is he a tall boy? Red hair? Built like a viking?” the old man asked.
“Yes! You know him?” Rosa asked, hope lacing her voice.
“Of course I know him! Dear old Jason has always been such a nice boy! Always up for helping me out whenever I was in a bit of a pickle with everyday things! Never complained about it either! If you’re in a jam, he’s always there for you!” the old man stated.
“That’s the vibe I picked up from him when I spoke to him last! Do you know where he is right now?” Rosa asked, almost pleading with the old man as he pulled out the keys to his apartment.
“Well… you do seem like a sweet young lady and not one to tell an old man lies. So, I’ll ask you; do you have any ill intent with that boy?” the man queried.
“The only ill intent I have with him is the sort that all women have with a handsome and strapping young man like him,” Rosa answered honestly.
“Now that is a good answer!” the old man said as he hooted with laughter. “So, you know what? I’ll tell you where he is, as far as I know.”
The old man then told Rosa about how Jason now owned some land and was living on it right now. What the old man said wasn’t much to go on, but at least Rosa had a ballpark area where she could go and look for him. It was a ways out of the city, in a place that was secluded and out of the way, which suited Rosa just fine. It would take some doing and she might have to hire an Uber to get there, but get there she would. Her very life depended on it!
