Hello!

First, I have a thank you to you all for the overwhelmingly positive response to my Medium Message on Pi Day. I want to revel in it. I want to roll around in it like a dog in a patch of wildflowers.

I know y’all are a pretty cool bunch, and I generally expect that on patreon most people who have severe political incompatabilities with my existence will either not be here in the first place or quietly leave without making a scene, so I wasn’t expecting too much negativity to pop up. And it didn’t, which is great. But I was equally unprepared for the sheer amount of active support and beautiful messages.

It warms my heart. It makes me remember that good is more than the absence of bad, and that we can have it despite the bad.

So thank you for that.

In video archive news, over 100 videos are on vimeo, and there’s almost 50 that still aren’t. I’ve been procrastinating carving out a chunk of time to hunt down the original files and get them uploading to vimeo, titled and description’d, etc. I’d like to get it done in the next month, but I cannot predict myself.

The rest of this post is an orientation primarily for those of you who just joined this pi day, because there a bunch of you!

Hi! Welcome!

This page currently operates a bit differently than others you might be subscribed to. Most months I pause payments, because I’m not making public content very often. Maybe it would be more efficient if I did things a different way, but there’s a couple features I’m grandfathered into that I’m not sure I can keep if I shut things off and try to set up again later, so I just pause month after month.

If you just joined, you shouldn’t have been charged this month, and you won’t be charged for April either. (Patreon doesn’t usually work like that, but, see aforementioned grandfathered-in features.) After that, who knows! Maybe I will try some new things, and maybe I will share them.

I’ve been in a quiet mood in recent years, with few exceptions. But I like to think that maybe the shift off of YouTube will make it feel better to put things on internet. If I do ever figure out what I want to do online and start charging again, then this patreon page is overdue for an overhaul on the structure and levels. I might experiment with some things? Or I might ignore it?

We’ll find out!

A final housekeeping note is that I know a lot of folks joined just to see what was up with my youtube page, and maybe weren’t intending to be long-term subscribers. I totally understand! Please feel welcome to dip in and out any time. There’s never any hard feelings for folks who change up their subscriptions, and there’s lots of other (active!) creators worth supporting.

Am I missing anything? Let me know.

🐌

P.S. I'm updating on May 25th 2025, also copied on my previous post, to mention that Vimeo is pretty well stocked with the rest of my backlog now, and also that other reasons unrelated to that original post have come up that make me very glad I have Vimeo as an alternative host for my videos. Vimeo has been reliable for the past decade in making my videos available for free without ads or signups. Stay tuned for more updates.

You will be remembers as Vi of Hart, not with fire 🔥 at your feet, but a π in each hand, an aura of τ connecting the two.

I still have my hexaflexagon and tau T-shirts, which are still worn on occasions. Plus a triangle pin, which has pride of place on my notice board.

Yes, you are missing that you have literally enriched the universe with your wit, mathematics, theater, paper folding -- did you do paper folding? -- Mr Ugh (sp?), and snail. Never forget how much delight you have brought us. Am I laying it on too thick? LOL Anyway, thx.

Some of my early academic research, before I started making videos, was in computational origami :) One of the many topics on my "I should make a video about that someday" list!

You’re amazing and even if we don’t hear from you, knowing you are in the world helps raise my opinion of humanity (especially in trying times). Thank you for everything.

got me lol, i totally joined to see what was up with your youtube page -- but actually, i'd been meaning to for years, since the beginning of your patreon i believe, and hadn't had the means until recently. so there we go, i'll be sticking around :-)

lipamanka

a lot of my friends and I miss the moon spoon video. is there a place to see that one in particular? it does not appear to be on vimeo.

Thanks so much for being yourself and being bold about your principles, and I wish you much joy rolling around in your wildflowers of well-earned gratitude. Glad to discover that you're... well, none of us are OK right now, but "still afloat" seems fair to say? I looked for and couldn't find the "how to ruin everything" video on Vimeo, and it seems more topical than ever in our current times. Also, want to offer an extra personal thanks for the "On Gender" video - as a fellow gender-alien, it was profound to feel seen and recognized and not alone in that, especially from someone I admire. 🪐

I just found it on vimeo. Looks like it's been uploaded mere hours ago! I'm happy we get to watch it again, it's one of my favourites.

When you say "other reasons unrelated to that original post have come up that make me very glad I have Vimeo as an alternative host for my videos" I must say that I personally would have to agree. That being said, I think YouTube's been unreliable for years. Has anything about YouTube changed in particular that's spurred this wee update?
