Not like I'm going to post daily vlogs or anything, but the coffee thing had to be done and had to be documented for my science records. And the progress on my latest zine. And these are things I don't mind sharing with YOU, gentle reader! Secret humans only!

Yeah, that didn't look like the yummiest coffee. But doing coffee experiments before coffee is a bit putting the cart before the horse, I suppose.

Kenny Tilton

This is scary. Amazon just notified me that *my* coffee experiment (a grinder and a new coffee maker) will be here tomorrow! We must be on the same coffee wavelength...

Calle Englund

Tasting notes might be anticipated, for science of course.

Kenny Tilton

Agreed, but with the bar set at "coffee-like"...

Julian Sterling

what about more smaller teabags to increase surface area

Rob Hamilton

I approve of this experiment. We need to find more ways to make coffee - for science!

Laura Twardy

I'm following with interest. Teabag coffee doesn't sound so different from French press coffee, which is not just good on my uneducated tongue but also followers among those who can taste (and care about) subtleties in their coffee. I wonder whether using coarse-ground coffee in a metal tea ball and steeping it for the same 4-5 minutes as one would with a French press would work. I may have to go try this myself right now...

Note on the barista/bar thing: in Italy (where much of the American coffee tradition is descended from), a small restaurant that serves espresso and related drinks, pastries and sandwiches in the morning and alcohol later in the day is a bar, and the employees are baristas.

Jon Levell

Ahhhh, boiling water is too hot! Please let it get to 190~195F. Also, baristas should wear shirts that say 'Coffee Chef' -- I'd totally tip more.

vihart

yep, the unused footage definitely had lots of "uhhhh wait what is even an object or thing uhhhh need coffee object to do coffee object..." It's a big motivation for finding easier ways to coffee, because I don't know how anyone remembers how to coffee before a coffee

vihart

Yay congrats on the new coffee toys!

vihart

To be fair, it was a very accurate description. But I'll keep that in mind ;]

vihart

I think the big barrier to fancy coffeeness is that I use ground coffee instead of making sure I have fresh locally roasted extra great beans and grinding it etc... gotta see if my coarse ground doesn't escape my tea ball now!

vihart

This sounds good and efficient, as compared to using up twice the real estate to have coffee places that close in the afternoon and bars that open in the afternoon.

coffee chef! coffee chef!

Bootstrapping is hard. We don't have enough toggle switches. Honestly, I find the pyrex method way easier than the pour-over method (takes too long) or the teabag method (requires dexterity to assemble the bag, and then doesn't make the best coffee). But there is also the (and I know this is going to sound really bad and radical) method of just getting a coffee maker that does it for you. You set it up the night before, and when you get up the next morning, all you have to remember how to do is pour coffee out of the carafe, which is generally pretty doable. I don't like this kind of coffee, but if you're willing to drink teabag coffee, you probably have a more utilitarian attitude toward coffee than I do. :)

Isn't an individual coffee ground effectively a fractal teabag? I mean, I guess not, because they don't actually exhibit fractal geometry, but I suspect that even so it would be an adequate approximation.

John Wills Lloyd

Li-Yu, a former Ph.D. student who turned into an international rockstar leader in my discipline, served me coffee made from a teabag-like steeping device. It was O.K., but the idea of a fractal bag tickles me; I guess the ultimate would be to have each grain of consistently ground coffee ensconced in its own perfectly gossamer-thin layer of bag with water of the exact right temperature flow-floating all about it. Whoever makes the perfect cup of coffee will probably achieve satori, die, go to heaven, and be reborn so fast that she or he will not remember it upon return as a turtle holding up the Earth. So, it's more fun to pursue approximations to brewing that cup than to making it.

vihart

maybe grind coffee into pure powder, steep briefly, then apply the centrifuge to get the grounds out...

Natesh Subhedar

towards the end of the video, i saw a kind of scrap book full of colors and graffiti . It felt exciting to see all that beautiful chaos.
