Happy December, thank you for your continued support! I'll be working on updating the supporters page and stuff tomorrow.

Image above is another Project Butterfly exploration, silver sharpie on printed photo. 10 points if you recognize the source material!

I've had a weird week full of good luck and bad luck. I'm coming out ahead overall but it's been a bit of a rollercoaster...

On Black Friday things were pretty exciting; the hexaflexagon shirts sold out so quickly that we were able to pre-order some more in time for them to sell out too. That's a welcome bit of cash, as my savings was pretty unhappy about the months I spent unemployed and then getting this thing together...

So I was running around like a crazy person chasing the Dogget in celebration, when CRACK goes my 2nd toe as I catch my foot against the foot of the couch, and the first thought that popped into my head even before the pain hit my brain was "well there goes the tshirt money".

But then I remembered that unlike in 2010 when I broke my foot and scooted around on a rolly chair for a couple months hoping it would heal ok because I had no health insurance and couldn't afford to see a doctor, I totally have health insurance now! Also, after the initial pain subsided it seemed to not be as bad a break as I first worried it might be.

On the downside there's apparently not much they can do for a broken toe except tape it to the neighboring toe and tell you to stay off it.

On the bright side, I've got this cool job now where I work from home and I am my own boss, and this cool job is going well enough that I can afford to take it easy once in a while. So I took the excuse to spend more time reading in bed, which has been nice. I haven't had enough reading time this year.

The Dogget is unhappy with her diminished walk mileage but we're working more on scent training instead, which she has deemed an acceptable bargain.

The worst part is that I pace a lot when I work, thinking and writing and thinking and taking notes and thinking. Especially if I'm writing, whether it be a video script or an article or music, I'll pace for several hours of the day, between sentences, while considering edits, while imagining my way through the work. It's frustrating to not be able to pace.

Then my next piece of good luck: I had a little bit of bitcoin that had been sitting around for a few years not worth the amount of time it would take me to figure out how to sell it, until recently Bitcoin spiked up to 10k. So I figured I'd look into it.

And it turned out I had a little more than I'd remembered. Enough, in fact, to pay off one of my higher-interest loans and cut down my monthly run rate by about $100. Mega win!

(Though I will keep kicking myself for not taking the time to figure out how to accept the 6.28 bitcoin someone offered me as a donation many years ago after my Pi is Wrong video first came out.)

So I'm a little less in debt, but then it turns out that it costs more to keep all of Vi Hart Headquarters heated, including the office and studio which now has to be heated every day, than I had budgeted for. So in the end everything's about back to even.

And then the best piece of luck of all, that on Dec 1st over 1400 people got together and decided to send money to support my existence! It is very nice to have a promise of stable income to help absorb the ups and downs of life.

Besides reading and musicking and paperwork and budgets and logistics, this week I've been mapping out more of Project Butterfly. It's not going to be an easy one. I do hope it comes together...

For the next couple weeks, though, I'm going to be focusing on the next Vihart video. I might put some spoilers in an update post in the next week.

For tonight, I'm gonna relax with my doggo and continue my exploration of dogs in scifi/fantasy. I just finished Dogsbody (Jones), which I appreciate for the dogness of the narrator's thinking, and I also read The Sirens of Titan (Vonnegut), which I liked but turns out there's not much dog in it, and I'm partway through City (Simak) which is quite interesting both structurally and dogally.

Ultimate magic dog is still the Disreputable Dog in Lirael and Abhorsen. Other suggestions appreciated!

+1 for Disreputable Dog/ Abhorsen! May your toes heal quickly and your medical tape be plentiful!

Fred Chapman

Vi Hart, there is nobody like you! I, too, am a mathemusician, and I've admired your work for years. I hope that things continue to improve for you so that you get the support you need to do the work that only you can do. ♥

Sorry to hear about the toe, been there done that, although I had (fortunate?) addition of a fair bit of nerve damage so it didn't hurt much for most of the healing process. An idea to get Dogget more walkies. I've seen people with lower leg casts with little scooters with a pad to kneel on for the busted leg. After a quick Google, Knee Rovers $130 to $180 on Amazon. Get mobile soon!

Troy R

Ice puddles! Now to read the rest.

Troy R

This was quite nice to read aside from the toe. Hope it heals quickly. :)

Rajat Tibrewal

Take care! PS: The source material looks glassy and oily. Its fascinating, but I have no clue what could it be!

vihart

10 points! ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️

vihart

Thank you! I love so many kinds of tape, it's good to have a good excuse to use medical tape.

vihart

Yay mathematician club! 📈🎶🎉

vihart

Oh the mixed blessing of the right nerve damage at the right time. I wonder if they make all-terrain knee scooters?

vihart

Thanks! Hint: The source was shown in a secret patron-only video recently.

vihart

Coooool! Biggest paper hexaflexagon I've seen. Points for figuring out how to flex one that big! ⬡

vihart

Cool! Well, I put it on the wishlist.

Steve

ice layer on top of the puddle in the woods. nice :)

Rajat Tibrewal

Okay I cheated. Ice puddles it would seem. My mind obviously raced in a completely different direction... The triangles on the top left are like spaceships (vihart ships?) making their way through dense cloud formations. The landscape is a mess with huge dust storms ravaging everything. And you can see the clueless sheep on the bottom right, trying to ignore everything. Okay, time to put the imagination to rest for the day :)

Not only did you invent the term 'HOVER-PUDDLE', but you somehow managed to turn it into a beautiful work of art. (and yes--if it was crappy art i'd say "man that sucks", But it doesn't-----so there's that). And then there is Vonnegut---because i just read "cat's cradle" again, which basically asks the still very scary question, "what if the weapon that can destroy the world (or freeze the entire earth (ice nine) was in the hands of a child?" And broken toes belong in some other parallel of pain that has it's own solar system.

Zackie

Regarding fantasy dog books: Zelazny's "A Night in the Lonesome October" is told by Snuff, who may not be the best magic dog, but is still a nice distraction from broken toes.

vihart

Vonnegut is super scary, and the two books with Kazak the dog (Sirens of Titan and Breakfast of Champions) are extra scary relevant these days, it seems... Although at least Breakfast makes up for the scariness with one of the most beautiful and tangible metaphors for the human spirit ever, IMO

vihart

I've ordered it! Weird having to wait days for a book... I'm so spoiled by ebooks.

Randal Moore

YESSSS--- V's alter ego Kilgore Trout (in many of his books) meets his maker in B of C -- i don't think I'm quite ready for that. Even the brief synopsis of Trout's Sci Fi books are still relative today--while hilarious. Slaughterhouse Five--Vonnegut was indeed a POW in Dresden during the massive bombing of grand art and architecture......and i have to stop myself here--way too much to cover.

Haha I love the stories you tell coming through my email inbox. Such a pity that in the US you still have to use health insurance though :( #MedicareForAll

Zackie

I know! right? But analog mail has its benefits. There's a certain deliciousness in anticipation.

Kenny Tilton

Nice hover-fly! Re dog stories, all I could think of was the end of "To Build A Fire", but Dogget would never do that to you, and vice versa. Right? Wishing you a speedy recovery to slow pacing.

Ian Badcoe

We also loved the Disreputable Dog in Garth Nix books...

Bruce

sending healing thoughts for your toe. Glad to see your spirits are up and you can continue to create new art and inspire others with your videos.

I always liked "Dogs in Space" Nancy Coffelt! It's an illustrated children's book about the solar system that I haven't read in ages, but I still have dreams about it some times. For an actual novel with the dog as a main character, I like Roverandom by JRR Tolkien too!

Sarah Heile

Longevity by S. J. Hunter is the first book in a scifi series that has a great dog, Louie, in it. Also it got a lot of really interesting societal ideas about dealing with greatly extended lifespans.

vihart

Ooh sounds fun! Just picked up a copy.

vihart

Huh, somehow I've never read Roverandom! I must fix this!

vihart

Thank you! Easy to have good spirits when I've got the financial freedom to do work I love :D

vihart

She is the best! I read that series so many times as a teenager.

vihart

Dogget would cleverly avoid the entire situation by refusing to leave adequate warmth, and howling bitterly if I tried to go out into the freezing cold without her.

vihart

Yeah that was one of the very nice things about being properly employed, and one of the big arguments against doing this whole self-employed thing. The US sure is bad at some things.

Sarah Heile

If you want to revisit in another form, the original Abhorsen trilogy is narrated by Tim Curry and he does a brilliant job at it!

Andrew Berg

Of course, the existential threat in "Cat's Cradle" Is just one giant hover-puddle....

Ian Badcoe

We have Roverandom as an audio book read by Derek Jacobi...

Kenny Tilton

Ah, yes, now I recall. Dogget bravely testing the way ahead across the hover puddle...

Solstice H.

I feel like Ponch from the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane needs a mention. When you're a wizard, it can affect your pets, like Kit's mentors' koi who are full of koans. But Ponch? He seems to be finding (inventing?) universes. Squirrelworld!

vihart

I want to read this!

gregg v

sorry, I read this after my recommendation; which is less magic/fantasy and more absurd and bizzare. Which is kinda similar, I think.
