Hello good humans!

A reminder this Patreon is currently not collecting pledges, as I have a full time job that is not this.

But, since my job has involved a lot of paperworky things lately, apparently my brain exploded into the creative outlet of making videos analyzing The Witcher, soooo I did that again.

(here's the first and previous one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnEvLLMk6L8 )

A lot of you will be skipping this series, and that's a perfectly good thing to do. I purposefully have produced them to appeal only to those interested, not to attract a general audience who would just as happily watch an entertaining video on another subject. I'm extraordinarily fortunate to have a platform where I can share a niche thing and find an active audience who cares, and I don't have to worry about making it super polished and share-able in order to reach people. I get the best of all possible worlds. Critical mass of people who care, without unwanted attention from uninvested bored internet humans.

The unscripted portion of this video took just a couple days to shoot and edit, but there's also a re-edit of the scene that has been soaking up my creative energy overflow in the evenings. Following the first video, which gave an unusual focus to scent, I decided to re-interpret this scene focusing on smell and how each of the character's internal motivations are affected by scent. It wasn't supposed to get that real and deep, but once I got started on it the reality leaked through. Like life I find it both hilarious and deeply upsetting. Actual social dynamics around odor are complex and problematic, and there's a delightful tension when we bring that complexity to a production that lacks smellovision and portrays its hero as being cool, secure, and powerful, with only the occasional reference in the dialogue to his odor of death, destiny, and onion. (Perhaps in the books there's more on the topic of scent?)

It's unusual for me to post content of this type, and I know many members of the public are used to my voice narrating some version of my own thoughts, not the problematic thoughts of fictional characters. So... don't be like Renfri. Also I got to have fun jamming on a bunch of instruments to create this video's variations on "Sweet Sniff" from last time. I am an ARTIST.

Overanalyzing The Witcher: Tavern Scene (plus re-edit)

Every moment of this 4-minute scene communicates multiple things at once, and I'm ready to go terrifyingly in-depth about it.

Wow. Familiar territory*, happily enjoying your stuff and then popping out of my immersion to realize, Damn, making this was not easy! Ah, it was the screen shot of the video editing software that did it. * OK, now I remember. There was something you did about something else when I realized you had knocked off an amazing mobile or something just as a supporting element. As for over-analysis, ya think? But I find myself wondering, after all these years, are we finally seeing the energy source behind the work that amazes us so? This is one of my all time favs. Thanks!

This one definitely took a lot more work than the first in the series, and I'm glad you appreciate it! Aside from the editing and motion/graphics, there was the writing time for the re-edit. One of the least time-consuming parts was actually recording and producing all the musical variations on the Sweet Sniff theme in a different instrument and style for each perspective in the re-edit. Something I should've predicted is how much time it takes to watch a 36-minute video over and over again when reviewing edits and exports! (Or more, since the first edit was 45 minutes.) The first video took about 10 hours, this one took at least 40.

I loved watching these! The comfortable intimacy you create with the candles/fire etc was lovely. Please post more only as it pleases you, and to post them without 40 hours (!!!) editing and perfecting them, I just enjoy seeing these scenes through your eyes.

Unless the 40 hours of editing are also fun for you! If so, have at it!

In this case they were! If I had to do that many hours regularly it would probably become less fun, but as a side-project with no timeline or expectations it was a pleasant way to spend some evenings. It helps that 40 hours IS the quick and dirty version, for a video this long and with a re-edit of a scene that long. Keeps it fun.

Hi! I realize I'm very late to this, but better late than never, right? I very much enjoyed your analysis, I never see connections like this when I watch something. At around 12min, your original spider theory was correct! Guy#2 takes two hits and you count him again as #4, for a total of eight men plus Renfri. Overanalyzing is, in fact, the best! Also I love your ending, it is glorious. I hope you get to make more of this series :)
