My friends, we have made it to another Pi Day!

The world today is different than it was a year ago. I'm glad you're still with me, and I wanted to mark the occasion with more than just the regular kind of Pi Day video. So in this year's video, after the usual fun notebook doodles and rambling, I've included a half hour of piano improvisation on Pi. I only very rarely play piano for anyone but myself, so this is my way of sharing something special with you, and to recognize all the feelings about our journey from Pi Day 2020 to Pi Day 2021.

Important Notice: The last time I enabled payments from y'all was for last year's Pi Day video. For this video I'll also be enabling payments, which should go through with your April Patreon payments. If you want to remove or change your pledge before that happens, you have a couple weeks to get that done. As I do have a dayjob and am not under financial pressure to make money with videos right now, I very much encourage you to drop your pledge if you're feeling that your own financial situation has become less stable since a year ago, and trust that those supporters here who have the financial ability to do so are covering my hosting/software/upkeep costs plus tip. (I promise to not feel guilty for accepting money for my work if you promise not to feel guilty for reducing/removing your pledge if that's the right thing for you. I'm really happy you all are here regardless of your financial situation! )

Words can be a lot of work for me, and I think part of why I can get good results with scripted content is because I never stop seeing how hard words are. I have the skill of being able to turn time and effort into better words. I think my baseline ability to express myself in words is lower than you might expect, but I have a high ceiling when I have the time and energy to wordsmith, to edit for hours upon hours and obsess over every detail, perfect every sentence, painstakingly craft the perfect flow. I enjoyed our last post where we just said hi to each other without worrying too much about fancy words. Today I'd also like to hear from you, and will be responding in emoji by default. I don't promise to be any good at emoji either, mind you. Please feel free to write in with emoji or words or both or other.

🐌,

Pi Day 3/14 1:59AM - Spring Ahead

Pi is taking an hour from us! Let's get mad, then maybe drift off to soothing music to give ourselves that hour back. Thank you to this tweet by @darrenglass and via @tweetsauce which not only reminded me that Pi Day was coming up and I should probably make a video, but from which I 100% stole the title and intro: https://twitter.com/darrenglass/status/1367978449864974337 This video is sponsored by Patreon Patrons like you! Special thanks to Ray Sidney, Pat Devlin, David Perryman, Andew Romaner, Andrea Bi Biagio, Jodi Vezzetti, Yana Chernobilsky, and David Smith, plus an extra thanks from my piano to Caleb Wright. More thanks are here: http://vihart.com/thanks/ Happy Pi Day, everyone. I know it's been not just a long while but also a weird while, and I'm glad to see you're still here with me.

♪♫♪♫♪♪♪ Do you forget the words to your wordspells once you cast them, or do they stay with you, once built, to be used again as needed? P.S. Thank you for the gift and bless you. May you find something new in this repetition. ☺

🥧🎉 happy pi day!

Welcome back. Thank you for this wonderful music playing in the background as I type, is gentle recurrent melody filling the quiet in a way that makes my own piano jealous. Though it sits only a few metres to my left it dwells a world away from me in other ways, and it dreams of another life in which a more talented musician spent their life with it. Happy pi day, and thanks for the concert.

Thank you vi and happy pi day! Since I am in Europe and our less organized pi, didn't manage to steal an hour here, I used the extra donated hour to contemplate about the universe's harmony and on how to overcome the rift between Tauism and Piism. Finally it came to me and I now officially renamed pie to tau in my circles. To celebrate today we are going to bake half a tau and enjoy it very much. Since our means of productions only allow the creation of full taus we are going to freeze half a tau and just eat the other half. We will then also bake a tau on Tau Day, defrost the old half and freeze a new half. On next year's Pi Day we will defrost this half tau and will have a non leap pi year. I am still working out how to make this pattern closer to the nature of Tau but I guess I have to transcendent first to figure that out. But I am losing myself.... I wish you all the best.

Hi Vi. I've been following your channel I was about 16, just having picked an instrument and looking for what to study. I ended up studying mathematics largely because your videos expanded my science curiosity and laser focused to mathematics. In my very early twenties your videos helped me figure out where I stand in social issues and later my relationship to gender, in a fun moment of irony, years after the video. And now, in a job I got with my math degree, but pretty far from math, your videos are introductions to concepts I haven't heard of, or thoughts and perceptions that are good to have in my head. The excitement of learning is still one of the best ways to stop the bad days from getting worse. So in summary, thanks for creating and putting your creations out for people to see. Also shout-out to the second channel that's always delivered a perfect balance of weird, creepy, and funny. As far as emoji go, I'm hoping ❤️ is appropriate.

Thank you Grigorios for this kind and good comment, you chose the perfect emoji. 💖💃🎉🥧🔭🐌

Was just trying to look up your other pi day videos on Youtube, and I admit, I accidentally searched for Pi Hart instead of Vi Hart

This is terrific. Reminds me i should tend to my neglected piano. Also, somewhere I have bookmarked that famous Rachmaninoff variations on a theme by Paganini thing, and also I have some Philip Glass, both of which seem suddenly relevant. But first, chilling to this. Thank you! Edited to add: 🎵❄️🎵❄️🎵❄️🎵❄️🎵❄️🎵❄️

Thank you for an unexpected bit of the expected! 🥧 🎶

tau is but number While pi? both number and lunch music, food for soul.

I asked TextSynth (GPT-2) to provide me a poem about pi, but all I got was ... "A circle's circumference is 3.141 and its diameter is 5.1466. The ratio of the circle's circumference to its diameter is 3.141 and 3.137, so the circle is 3.142 (this is an exact equivalent) and 3.145 (which is an approximate equivalent of 3.141). A senryū is thus written about the mathematical constant pi (π). It is important to note that, with modern computers, math is now represented as a computer program and not a human language."

In my part of the world, we don't loose the hour .... yet. Nonetheless enjoyed the half hour you spared for us. 🎼🎶🎹🎶 🎵💨🎧🍀

Hi, Vi! I think you've met my partner and many friends from bab5 in the bay area, but we never have. I really appreciate your art, and if you'd ever like to collaborate on something related to the Haskell programming language, I'm the newly minted executive director of the Haskell Foundation! Thank you for taking the time to check in with us and putting the work in to give another video, you rock.

Thank you for the beautiful half-hour, and one back to you! So good to hear your voice and musical talent! P.S. Halfway to TAU Day!

That's one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.

I prefer June 28th but what a pleasant surprise. 😀

Truly great to see and hear from you and hear your music. Glad to see you are doing well. Happy Pi Day 😊 🎉🥧3⃣1⃣4⃣1⃣5⃣9⃣🥧🎉

You are very gifted, and you are a gift. Thank you.

Amazing. Thank you Vi for sharing your incredible talents. Any chance you can provide an audio file? or put it on Spotify? It's so lovely.

Thank you for sharing with us this PIano piece, Vi! Indeed I'll be back in patreon as soon as I get my affairs in order. May the force be with you.

Andew Romaner

Hey Vi, On the impossibility of repetition, I had google this but apparently Heraclitus gets the attribution for that saying about how one can never cross the same river twice because the river is never twice the same and neither is the one who crosses it. I can't speak for the rivers in Greece, but down here you can certainly cross the same bayou twice. The water hardly moves but for the force you exert upon it and identity, while certainly in flux, is not so unstable as to make recognition impossible. That would be a much crazier world if it were. Speaking of flux I relate somewhat painfully to what you said about having difficulty composing your thoughts on the fly. I used to be better at this, probably peaked in my late twenties, and over the last few years I can feel myself becoming less and less accessible to other people in those kind of spontaneous conversations. That makes me sad. An advantage, maybe, of getting older is that you can have more fine-tuned intuitions about things, but it makes it more frustrating (functionally impossible?!) to attempt to explain why you think what you think. A treat to hear from you as always.

Laura Twardy

Just a very small smile and wave, from a fan who also sometimes finds words difficult. A good friend of mine and I use 🐌 when we are small and enshelled; snail reminds me of you and that makes me smile twice. wishing you 🌱 for hope and every other kind of goodness <3

Bryan Schuck

Allow me to free associate while your music does the same in the background.

Bryan Schuck

Many years ago, I want to see a Philip Glass event at the Brooklyn Academy of Music called Einstein On the Beach. It opened my eyes to repetitive music and I would glance my hearing in the direction of repetitive music when it sailed my way. Later, knowing Glass by name, I turned to watch Koyaanisqatsi. Somehow, after that, repetitive music became a transformative event, as incongruent as that may seem. Repetitive = Transformative?

Bryan Schuck

As you said, the repetitive can be the foundation upon which the transformative can build. (did you say that, or did I just hear that in your music? anyway :)

Bryan Schuck

Thank you Vi. You be you, and we love you for it.

Mo O

I'm late, but I finally got around to watching this. It's mid finals here, and everything is feeling more or less repetitive. Wake up, panic at the time, log onto zoom, and stay there. Go to sleep exhausted. Repeat. Thank you for shifting the perspective and reminding me to zoom out. This rhythm of 4.5 days school, 1.5 days mutual aid, and 1 day rest is not mundane. This is where life happens. Thanks, Vi.
