New video! And, as we've decided is how we do things around here, new video means I'm letting payments go through for the month, so you are officially supporting the creation of Octahedra everywhere.

Ok, y'all know I love a good shape. But what you might NOT have known is that I also love BTS.

I first started conceptualizing a "Mathematics of BTS" video a few years ago. I thought it would be so much fun and also good outreach, but the concept I had in mind would have been time consuming. I sketched out some ideas and wrote some script snippets but it never made the priority list.

But then, on Friday morning, BTS released the Festa 2021 timeline poster with an Octahedron on it, and I thought... it shouldn't be too hard to make a pattern people could enjoy. And might as well make a short simple video, maybe for the 2nd channel, showing how to make it. And, well, I already did some work on the bigger themes for the other probably-never-to-be-made video, so why not make use of that work as well. And I knew that all of y'all would be very supportive of the idea of having the maximum amount of BTS and Octahedron fun that could possibly fit into a long weekend.

Needless to say, what was supposed to be a casual afternoon project turned into a 3-day sprint to create TRUE ART.

I love how the video came out, it brings me such joy, and I hope it will get Octahedra into the hands of BTS Army everywhere. Thank you for helping it be a thing!

I'm collecting resources, links, and more info on http://vihart.com/bts/. so far there's not much up there but after I take a nice long nap I hope to fill it out further, especially thinking of the outreach angle and education context.

That's all for now. Gonna go eat some snacks.

🐌,

Vi

BTS Octahedron

I saw a shape in a poster, and the rest could not be helped. Want to make your own BTS Octahedron? vihart.com/bts/ Also see vihart.com/bts for more info, links, and original files that you can edit, translate, and reuse however you want. This work is sponsored by Patreon Patrons like you! Special thanks to Ray Sidney, Pat Devlin, David Perryman, Andew Romaner, Andrea Bi Biagio, Jodi Vezzetti, Yana Chernobilsky, David Smith, and Caleb Wright. For more paper octahedron fun, this intermediate origami octahedron by Jeremy Schafer is just wonderful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rc5EGPo4Op0 One of the playing card constructions is "6 Card Ball" by Andrea Hawksley, she has DIY instructions here: http://blog.andreahawksley.com/six-card-ball/ The 12 card construction is by George Hart and has instructions here: http://georgehart.com/g4g10/  Also seen are a set of Skew Dice by Henry Segerman, as featured in this Numberphile video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAnCL3vhVIs You may see a peek of a set of 4 truncated octahedra with one for each member of the Beatles. These came from the brilliant mind of an artist on Etsy named Tess, though she no longer seems to have a shop or a public-facing web presence. Tess, if you see this please please tell me WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH YOUR MIND WHEN YOU DECIDED BEATLES TRUNCATED OCTAHEDRA WERE A THING THAT NEEDED TO EXIST. Because you were right. So right. You give me faith that BTS Octahedra need to exist too.

I love your videos, all of them, so know that I'm not complaining! but I thought you would like to know, the subject of the Patreon email was "Vi Hart's new patron-only video: "BTS Octahedron [New Video!]", but the video is public on Youtube. (I opened it while browsing incognito, which means it's public, right?)

Just curious: Is there any particular reason you don't have Patreon set to the "per creation" membership style? It seems like that's basically what you're doing right now anyway, and it might be simpler to just make that explicit rather than having to turn off and on monthly payments.

vihart

Ahhhh, I did not know Patreon was putting that in the subject line of email notifications... this is definitely not a patron-only video! It's only this post about the video that's patron-only. I'm going to contact Patreon support about that, thanks for letting me know.

vihart

I do have a reason! Unless something in the payment system changed, monthly payments cut down on credit card fees (which are a huge percentage of small payments) because Patreon is processing payments together for everyone you support at the same time. Though if it feels weird or cumbersome maybe I should analyze what the difference actually is and consider whether it makes sense to switch.

Why is the having a million polyhedral dice sets, but only knowing where one is so relatable? P.S. Do you play RPGs a lot? Or you know... did you before quarantine?

vihart

I know, right?? I have an on-again-off-again Shadowrun game over the years, it only uses d6 but SO MANY OF THEM and you can get them tiny and in bright colors and they are joyful cubes of chaos and love

Kid LeWinter

That sounds like awesome fun!

I have recently joined the BTS Army, and have been a fan or yours for years (your fans need a cute fan group name! Is there one? ) so this video is particularly thrilling for me. thank you!!

Today I learned: Gorilla Glue goes through the paper I printed this d8 on! Stickyfingersssssssssssss oh no my phone

Stevonnie

(Actually a response to Vi's response, but I can't find a way of doing that on the mobile app) FWIW, payment processing is done in one shot at the start of the month whether you use the per-month or per-creation model. My own Patreon uses the latter. (They unilaterally announced that they were going to change that and their fee structures a few years ago, upon which lots of people—myself included—canceled all their pledges, and they backed off.)

Adam Silcott

I have no idea who BTS is, but I loved the way you explored that poster--it's the sort of thing I always find my eyes doing with things like that since I was a kid. Your videos are always a treat!

Mich

omg ive loved your videos since i was a kid and have been a bts fan for years this is such a cool overlap in my favorite things!
