Hello everybody!

How do I explain this video? All I know is that it is very much itself.

If you haven't seen the previous video about the BTS Octahedron, you might want to start there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPKUbfIrlL8

Thank you for supporting this video! It ended up taking quite a bit more time and budget than my usual. I'll  be honest, if I hadn't pre-committed to its existence by collecting a Patreon payment when the project was only 1 month in, I might not have followed through.

While a lot of the content and process might follow my usual format, the long narrative structure is experimental; it would've been much easier to make a set of standalone videos of normal length, but that's not what this video wanted from me. Why did this need to be done? I don't know, ask the video, it knows more about this than I do.

A behind the scenes fun fact is that I lost some footage for about an hour before finally finding it in a folder labeled "Tau Day 2021", which I didn't even consider looking in because how is it possible that in June I'd already gotten to the filming stage and believed it could plausibly be done by Tau Day?

But yes, this is the very video I mentioned I was working on in this previous post called "Belated Tau Day" (potential spoiler warning): https://www.patreon.com/posts/belated-tau-day-53153117

It's been a long time since I've done a longer video project. Now that I've flexed those muscles, I might like to do it again, maybe this time with something that comes more naturally to me. I started to get nostalgic for Twelve Tones, a video that is now 8 years old, and which is my only other scripted film over 30 minutes. Now that was a good video! Twelve Tones was extraordinarily difficult to make, but the process was overall pretty much like my usual process. I had a specific vision from the beginning, labored over a script, then executed on the script as written. I knew I'd be able to produce exactly the music I wanted, exactly like it sounded in my head. And so I did.

But this new video followed a very different production path, looping and iterating, including elements out of my control. I won't give away the ending, but I will tell you that I filmed the footage for the final "unboxing" only two days ago. The final cut is exporting now, and I still don't know quite what the video is going to be like once I watch the whole thing through for the first time, except for that the video is definitely exactly itself.

I'm still struggling with what to title it, because I don't want to imply it is related to Twelve Tones. I tried variations like "A Tangle of Twelve Threads", "The Tale of Twelve Threads," "Twelve Threads Together", "Thinking Through Twelve Threads", anything to avoid being called "Twelve Threads", but too bad for me, that's what the video wants to be called!

Anyway, as the video says, I hope it brings you... something.

🐌,

Also see the previous video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPKUbfIrlL8 If you want to attempt to make the thing at the end of this video (spoilers) you can, but I must say I don’t recommend it to those without a lot of experience with these kinds of things. I know some of you out there who will definitely go ahead and make it even without a pattern because these things are in your nature too (you know who you are), so to make your lives easier, here: http://vihart.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/twelve-threads-octahedron.pdf Chapters: 00:00 Beginning 00:27 Dice: Wrong About Numbering? 01:58 Comments: COPPA 03:51 Symmetry: Having IDEAS 05:20 Dice 2: Is My Octahedron Wrong? 10:50 Comments 2: Clickocracy 12:44 Symmetry 2: Failure. 15:55 Dice 3: MORE DATA 24:43 Comments 3: “Influencer” 26:45 Symmetry 3: Stubborn Failure 28:15 Comments 4: Comfort with Not Knowing 29:27 Symmetry 4: Wrapping Up 31:19 Dice 4: ?? 36:04 End

Great to have you back, Vi! I'm curious: do you know if the music theory YouTuber 12tone, whose technique notably features timelapse hands doodling with voiceovers, was directly inspired by your content (perhaps Twelve Tones itself)?

as we've always expected, you have a lot IN your mind, let alone on it. -CTH

Thanks for your brain-dump, the free-wheeling associative journey was fun. I was just musing the other day how much internet media is bait-and-switch-y, this is a beautiful antidote to that. You're a treasure.

There are really good feels in this. I'm going to have to watch it again

Mirror Dice Universe got quickly demoted to Mirror Dice World, but it was grand for a moment!

I don’t know whether it’s syzygy or frequency bias, but either way, this human really enjoyed this video! I am now contemplating how difficult it would be to make a tool in VR to draw symmetric ribbons based on selected faces. It might be simpler to just make a web app with sliders - interesting to contemplate how to select the desired symmetry groups. Also, if you want to do resin casting, acrylic resin from sally beauty supply is readily available and reasonable quality can be achieved (though it might spawn tape face levels of arts and crafts)!

I only managed to watch this yesterday, but it was good to see you, too. Thanks for, um, dropping by? (I am not sure how this metaphor ends)

This made me go dig up my dice. All 6 of my D8s are the same pattern (1-3-5-7) with 1 opposite 8. I checked the D10s as well and they also all have the same pattern (1 opposite 8, 0 opposite 9). They're all from seperate tabletop gaming sets and purchased across around a 15 year period.
