Oh hello human peoples!

Happy Belated Tau Day! I have a video I've been working on the past month which I was hoping to get done in time, because even though Tau Day videos are much less of a thing than Pi Day videos around here, I still wanted to celebrate with you all. But it turns out it's a much bigger project than I thought, and in a good way. Part of it is following up on the previous video about octahedra, but it also adds in a bunch of other thoughts and threads and weaves them together in a way I think y'all will enjoy. So it won't be a Tau Day video after all.

It also is going to end up being quite a bit longer than my usual scripted videos, so a month just didn't turn out to be long enough, not to mention I have a dayjob and all. Plus, partly by virtue of its length and the number of parts, it has so far had a higher budget than most of my videos.

So here is where I want to make sure we're all on the same page as far as the nature of this Patreon:

I've gotten more than a few messages from folks who have had to change their pledge due to circumstances including pandemic-related unemployment, and, seriously, myself and everyone else here supports you prioritizing your needs. The amazing thing about y'all is that between everyone here, we've got it covered. We've got each other's backs. Together y'all are making sure I've got enough budget to make this video a little extra absurd and still free for everyone.

So here's a few ground rules:

1. Voluntary Support Fun Time

I was almost gonna pause payments this month since I didn't actually get the video done this month, but then I remembered that this is voluntary and y'all should only be contributing money in alignment with what is comfortable to your finances, and the fact is that this month I not only have spent many hours on this video but I've also already spent more on materials alone than a monthly Patreon payment covers. So I'm not pausing, but only because I know that you get to pause yourself if you want to. And you're still part of the fun time good shapes club either way, as far as I'm concerned.

2. But seriously, I mean it, it's Voluntary Support Fun Shapes Time

Just because I decided that it's time to upgrade from my 8-year-old video camera to something that can take higher resolution video of octahedral fun times, and that also I needed to buy more octahedral dice, etc, this doesn't mean that my video budget has to be your problem. The fact is, me going a little over budget on video production is not a cause for alarm for me because I have a dayjob that supports the cost of my own time and my other financial obligations. So there's a reason for me not to pause payments, and also still no reason you shouldn't modify your contributions however works for you. All of us here support your decision. This is the rule and the law.

3. Let's promise each other to not feel bad about making sensible choices here, though!

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I promise not to feel guilty about accepting money for my work if you promise not to feel guilty about removing or modifying your pledge based on what makes sense for you. If you're currently at all worried about paying bills, please trust that those here who are in more stable positions have us all covered on this. If I'm ever in serious trouble I promise I'll let you know, but we're all good here. I've got shapes and ideas and a surprise ending that may or may not work out and either way it will be perfect.

And so it has been said three times, and so let it ring true in your heart.

I am seriously excited about this video, it kinda feels like old times but also new times, and I can't wait to share it with you all when it is finished! (Which is going to take a few more weeks at minimum, but it's far enough along that I feel confident about completing and publishing it.)

SHAPES!!!

I solemnly swear that I will stop pledging if I need to, that I am happy to continue pledging, and that I am looking forward to the next video :D

Cool! I've seen the lumpy dodecahedrons before but I'd forgotten all about them. I wonder if anyone's done metallurgical analysis to see where they were made.

Looking forward to the tauday video! Sounds like it will be worth the wait. I am ambivalent about the focus you have regrding patr(e)onship - on one hand, I appreciate how much care you have for your supporters and for being honest and fair in this kind of transaction, but on the other hand, it saddens me that this patronship seemingly creates this mental strain of worrying about delivering and meeting expectations, and I wish you were free of that. Please know that I, at least, am and will be very happy to be able to (modestly) support you in your endeavours year-round, regardless of the amount and quality of new content produced, and I am sure many others feel similarly. And I pledge that should this change (though I do not expect it to), I will be guilt-free in pausing my pledged support.

Unrelated, I've recently become aware of brilliant-math-punster, should-be-internet-sensation Arya Yae, whose math sketches I cannot recommend strongly enough. I love all her sketches so far, but this one's my favourite: https://youtu.be/AeOqQyfiCEg

Isn't there an option to charge per "creation" (e.g. when you post something)? And I think there is an additional option (from the patrons' side) to cap the monthly amounts, so for example if somebody updates 100 times a month I don't have to pay 100x my pledge but rather a comfortable maximum for me. Don't know if Patreon has changed things behind the scenes and if this is an easy or available option to all content creators, but this would be the more convenient solution for all, for not regular/monthly updates -- especially so that you dont have to micromanage anything.

If a creator (patree?) has their charges setup as $/thing rather than $/month, you definitely *used* to be able to do that.

I appreciate your flexible and understanding approach to fiscal responsibility!

I pledge in an effort to support you and your work. I do this because I feel that you make the world a better place and I want to enable the world to be better. I don't view my pledge as buying a video, i see it as buying someone some space and time that may help me see the world in a new and different way. And for that I am grateful.

Beth and I blame you. It’s your fault that we still go back and watch some of your old videos over and over, share them with our kids, who then continue to take an interest in math to the point of exhausting all the AP maths available in high school, scoring well on AP tests, and loving math as much as we have. YOU ARE ENTIRELY TO BLAME FOR THIS. We will continue flinging money at you until you stop this madness. Please don’t ever stop. p.s. BEANS! 🤣🤣🤣

I'm a little late to the thread here, but clearly you should just keep on doing you. Your art has had such a positive impact on the way lots of folks view math-land (and certainly an impact on how I teach my classes), and we're all grateful for that. :-) You're great, and based on how often I use your stuff in my classes [it's a lot...], I for one am happy to pay you money in back payments for all the awesomeness you've already put out there. :-)
