Hi!

I'm almost done with a new video. It's about crescent rolls, so pick up a tube of those if you want to play along.

But here is a notice!

I'm currently running an ad revenue test on my channel.

To the 326 of you supporting me at the $1 level that reads "You won't see ads on any of my work. Neither will anyone else, but now you can feel good about supporting free content," I will be updating the wording on this.

I'll go more into detail once the test is complete and I have some more data, but I've started enjoying making videos again and I'd like to keep it that way, so I'm looking into the realistic possibilities for making this be a thing I do as more than an occasional hobby but less than an all-consuming career.

I know I'm long past due updating my policy on ads. I can be an extreme person. I don't like ads, therefore I will never have anything to do with any ads of any kind. If I were going to try to make money with ads, I might as well go full out and advertise my own products so I can capture all the value instead of getting a sliver of it. If I were going to try and make money at all, I might as well go full business and make millions off of a Vi Hart empire.

But a lot has changed on youtube, and in my life, since I made those decisions.

For one, I've learned that I really am not interested in building a Vi Hart business empire, so that's not even a theoretical option to compare ads against. I see how other creators who started around when I did have since grown their channels into full-on businesses, with employees and products and partnerships and a dozen revenue streams, in support of their goals as creators. And I'm capable of it. I didn't have the business skills when I first started my channel, but I sure do now.

But my goals are different.

It's also possible to make ad revenue without actually forcing ads on anyone, these days. There's a paid subscription option that didn't exist before. Ad blockers are free and getting better every day. And there's a bunch of different ad options to choose from. "Enabling Ads" doesn't have to mean unskippable mid-roll ads popping up in the middle of Twelve Tones. That would be unforgivable. But these days you can enable only pre-roll ads you can click "skip" on.

I know I'm long past any logical reason to not even consider enabling ads. It's pure stubbornness. It's a projection of my own annoyance at other people's ads, even though the kind of ads I'm annoyed at are the in-video sponsorship breaks by whatever predatory advertisers I won't even name because I don't want you to think I'm calling out any particular creators who do need to fund an entire business with employees.

I don't even have to see the other kinds of ads, because I subscribe to youtube premium and also use an ad blocker where appropriate, just as I think all reasonable people should do. That's the kind of behavior I can and do encourage, rather than thinking my stubbornness does anything except hurt myself.

My last reason to hold on to stubbornness was that ad revenue isn't really all that much anyway. At least not compared to other things I could be doing, like sponsorships, selling products, or actually promoting this patreon and collecting money from it more than twice a year.

And that's testable, so I decided to test it for a few quiet days where my channel isn't getting many views anyway, just to see what the CPM is like for my content. I thought maybe it'd be real bad and I could stop the test and give up and continue as normal.

But I forget sometimes that even if my new and infrequent videos don't perform super well, I still have twelve years of videos that still get views, and it adds up. From the initial numbers, if I'd had just skippable pre-roll ads enabled on my videos all year (minus a few videos I really don't want to monetize), I would've made significantly more than this patreon has made.

I could be seeking out sponsorships for things like crescent rolls, planning even short videos months ahead of time, and efficiently capitalizing on my own content. And the more content I make, the better all my content performs, so the more I work the more efficiently I can capitalize on my work.

I like efficiency.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that efficiency is not actually in and of itself a moral good.

I think I might like doing this half time. A video a month, or thereabouts. I don't know yet, so I'm experimenting. Imagine: doing a thing without doing ALL the thing. This might be character growth. We'll see. But right now it's looking likely I'll keep the skippable pre-rolls, and also that I'll be making more videos.

TLDR This is your notice that if you are here on this patreon purely out of ad-spite, and I really don't blame you if you are, now's a perfectly guilt-free time to unsubscribe. Thank you for supporting ad-less videos for as long as you have. I think it would be possible for this Patreon to offset ad revenue if I advertised it more, but, I honestly would rather have youtube pre-rolls in front of my videos than embed my own ads for me inside my videos. I no longer care what's more efficient, I care what I like. I like my videos being complete self-contained art. And I like it being small and quiet over here. I really don't want my art to be my entire business career life. But I want it to still be a part of my life. So I think we all did good and we'll all keep doing good and everything is good.

That was probably an unnecessary amount of explaining, but don't worry! I'll probably do even more unnecessary explaining once I make a plan for 2024. Unnecessary explaining is my speciality and I wouldn't have it any other way.

🐌,

Vi

There's nothing wrong with being sponsored by crescent rolls. Just think, you could be rolling in dough. (Sorry! To be serious for a moment, this is a reasonable point that is well made and I for one see nothing to object to)

Thank you for taking the time to explain the decision. It is a hard to navigate world we're in, and when I can hear this type of thought process from a creator I trust, it can help me understand the world better too. In terms of the 'ALL' of the thing it made me think of this wiki page I discovered months ago - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splitting_(psychology) - perhaps it'll give you something else to think [too much] about.

That kind of sponsorship isn't something I'm against in theory, if at some point the right partner and right timing come together. Maybe I can roll in dough for crescent rolls part 2, next year.

Woody Sims

I wholeheartedly endorse any and all propositions that increase the ratio of Vi Hart videos to non-Vi Hart videos.

Chris Colohan

Speaking as a "Wau" patreon, I signed up because I wanted to say thank you for your wonderful videos. I have zero expectations around advertising, I just love to see the cool creations you unleash on the world.

vihart

Indeed! For me it's definitely a defense mechanism to save me from poor work/life boundaries. It's a lot easier for me to say no to things when I know the alternative is too much yes, and how easily shades of yes become too much yes. But for ads I think I'm finding the right amount of yes.

I started sponsoring you on Patreon (at the pi level) about six years ago because I wanted to thank you for helping to inspire my daughter’s love of math, art and music. That formerly little girl is now passionately studying linguistics and computer science (LLMs) at a research university. I will continue supporting you on Patreon regardless of what you choose to do with the money. My patronage comes from a place of love and gratitude with no strings attached.

I am a Patreon supporter of another creator who always maintained that her channel would be add free. I her case Patreon was her main income and as this wasn't sufficient she had to enable adds, but kept them only at the beginning and end and made them skippable. This is perfectly understandable and I am still a Patreon. The one thing I find unacceptable is when the creator stops the video for a 'word from our sponsor', although I watch many videos with this type of advertising, I don't support any of their creators on Patreon. Besides, more Vi Hart videos is en exciting prospect, well worth a few adds. I'll have to rewatch some of your old videos and maybe get you a few extra coppers.

This video is brought to you by RAGE! Sallow Lesions, the free to play sensation that's sweeping the nation!

vihart

Ooh awesome! Say hi to her for me if it comes up :)

Thank you! It'd definitely be trickier to figure out the right thing if my content were more expensive to make. But your line on what you support makes sense to me. Asking people to donate to artists and educators is one thing, while asking people to donate to an entertainment business that's making money doing entertainment business things is another. YouTube is a weird place where those two things intersect and we're all still figuring it out, but I just want to enjoy making stuff and that's exciting to me too :)

I wholly support this decision. For one thing, I suspect it will mean a lot more people end up watching your videos. The “Algorithm” is a legendarily mysterious beast, but I’d be shocked if it didn’t include “don’t promote ad-free videos at all”, since those don’t generate any revenue for AlphaGoogleTube. (Also I too have YouTube Premium, so I won’t see the ads anyway. It’s soooo worth it!)

Maxion

Thank you for explaining. I look forward to there being more videos from you, and hopefully more Patreon charges too. :)

Jeff Brown

Out of curiosity, have you considered joining Nebula?

Martin Kletzander

Anything that makes you be able to make more videos or make you efficient, happy, or just feeling better. Supporting on Patreon and having Youtube Premium at the same time is how I justify my use of AdBlock and SponsorBlock. As always, I wish you all the best.

Kenny Tilton

I remember the day I heard someone apologize for "over-explaining", and was thrilled to have a word for what I do. ps. Just happy to hear you will be making more videos.

vihart

One of many things I should probably look into at some point, depending how Responsible Business Money Human I want to be.

@03Jan09

Thank you Vi. My Pi Level support will continue with or without ads : )

Bryan Schuck

As a HS math teacher, your work gives a guilty but stimulating vibe. My Pi Level sponsorship is my way of letting you know that we are out here and that you are appreciated for who you are. You go! Thx :)

First, thank you for the long post -- not because I needed or wanted the explanation, but because I am relieved not to be the only person whose explanations are so thorough that a 2-paragraph tl;dr seems appropriate. 😁 Second, I had never noticed that my paltry $1 had anything to do with ad avoidance. For me it was a token gesture of appreciation for how much I continue to enjoy the fractal song and esp. 12-tone Mary Had a Little Lamb, one of my all-time favorite choral pieces. 🎶 Thank you for the guilt-free invite to unsubscribe, which I had already planned to do at the new year but was feeling guilty about. The unsubscribe has nothing to do with ads or disappointment or disinterest. Rather, my Patreon portfolio is a scattered mess and my planned new year's resolution has been to clean out and rebalance. I will briefly jump to a higher tier as a gesture of thanks and token one-time, anonymous (?) -- er, uncredited -- sponsor to cover some out-of-pocket cost for the crescent rolls who gave up their life for science.

Gordon Glenn

I love your unnecessary explaining -- keep it up! And I am looking forward to seeing more of your work. P.S. Long Live TAU
