Benjamin

You've been on such a roll brother

Melissa

16:51 Cereal is called "KaBoom!" -- and yes, she should have hit her, but I think the knife is her weapon of choice not a gun. Such an intense scene. Here we go!!

Rae McCormack

The best!!! Can’t wait to watch Vol2 with you

Lailah Johnson

Let's go!!! I expected a late night drop for this. tutututu

Erin n Stefan

I don’t know if this is true, but I heard somewhere that the reason for the black and white sequence was because they ran out of fake blood during production and needed to get the scenes filmed, so they switched to black and white so they could use a substitute 😅

Melissa

VOLUME 2! VOLUME 2! VOLUME 2! Love "Kill Bill" so much -- always love a badass female lead.

Lailah Johnson

32:00 And that's my point! I love this movie! BUT the entire storyline of Black Mamba being in a coma and having that happen to her is so beyond unnecessary. It's weird and adds absolutely nothing to the plot. Literally nothing... like we already saw this woman be abused and murdered by Bill and the squad and then we also have to know that she was still abused over those 4 years?? I'm personally not a huge fan of QT's films because his personal desires or fetishes find their way into his movies and it is hard to stomach...he's obviously a gory story teller but he seems to enjoy putting beautiful women in scenarios of suffering and extra violence that comes off as gratuitous and freaky!!!

Lailah Johnson

Oren is ALSO her... like the entire encounter between them feels like that saying "why we gotta pit two bad bitches against each other?" and it's like yea...why can't they just maximize their joint slay and stunt on these hoes in unity... born to serve side by side forced to fight each other to the death... </3

omg! frank do you have a Letterboxd account? You should make one just to add movies you've seen so we know which movies not to request. Like have you seen Inglorious Basterds? To me it's Tarantino's finest. And I realllllly want you to watch A Place Beyond The Pines. If you ever opened up $50-100 requests (sometimes Todd in The Shadows will open up requests for an episode of One Hit Wonderland when his dog needs surgery for example), I'd be in the front of the line with Place Beyond The Pines, Looper, Blade Runner, Gone Baby Gone, 2001, Moon, Take Shelter, A Prophet, Minority Report, Curious Case of Benjamin Button (I'd bet you've seen that one though)... so many!!

The film is a love letter to classic kung fu films and samurai flicks, with some exploitation flicks thrown in for good measure. So much so that certain scenes are taken almost whole cloth from other films. Check out "Lady Snowblood" for an example. 1:46:05 this scene is heavily inspired by that film.

31:40 I think we're meant to believe she can read the lines on her hands and know.

First Name Ella

32:23 Well, women getting raped while in a coma is a pretty common thing. It's actually pretty important that he included this scene IMO.

First Name Ella

She was in a coma for four years. Also, I'm going to play Devil's Advocate and say the feet imagery here weren't overdone, and if it wasn't a Tarantino movie and he didn't have an infamous love of feet, no one would have thought twice about those scenes of her trying to get her toes working, and then the scene focusing on her feet and legs working for the first time in four years. There was nothing sexual or taboo about the use here, IMO. But I also kind of think we see extremely sexual things in film/shows all the time, and a few shots of some dogs walkin' are pretty vanilla. 1:20:03 I can't defend lmao. Also considering that 17 year-old was a mad, murderous bodyguard of the head of the Yakuza, I'm gonna forgive the Bride lol.

First Name Ella

1:35:30 yes! Except the film is already rated R (think of the rape references etc)... they had to make it black and white to avoid the NC-17 rating, which is a killer to any film trying to get wide theatrical release.

First Name Ella

So my final thoughts... most people prefer Vol 1 I think, and while it's probably my third favorite Tarantino flick (I really need to watch Jackie Brown as an adult again before I can truly say), I do prefer Vol 2. It's much slower, with little action, but it takes a step back and explains the whys and hows of everything, and the actor's portrayal of Bill (don't want to name him for spoilers) imbues him with some strange depth, warmth, affection for the Bride. Which makes him an even better psychopath.

ATG

As a woman who appreciates both a good to do list and revenge, this is one of my favorite movies.

Melissa

Looper is cinema!!

Roni Pene

Thank you for choosing this movie! Did you recognize a younger “Angelica” from Sense 8?

Alva

Kimono are restrictive and difficult to move in. Perhaps O-Ren could have won is she was in street clothes.🤔 Watching her crush Buck's head in the door brings me joy every time. 😊

melskmelsk

Afaik it was done to avoid an NC-17 rating for excessive gore. They wanted to stay at R. Desaturated blood is less bloody I guess

frankfreezy

That is a good point. I mean, she could barely open her legs oh so satisfying. I wish she did it more than three times

frankfreezy

Holy shit I knew she worked very familiar

frankfreezy

I've downloaded Letterbox like 3 times. It doesn't ever really just stick with me, I'll probably use it more if it catered to TV shows As for a list you could always just look at my movie collection

frankfreezy

her backstory and everything was too clean🔥 i feel you

frankfreezy

This is hilarious and badass I hope thsts the actual reason

melskmelsk

Everything about Tarantino movies is gratuitous: gratuitous violence, gratuitous references, gratuitous stylization, gratuitous cocaine-chatter dialogue, gratuitous feet. I'm def not a fan of Tarantino himself but a lot of his movies are a fun ride and this is def one of the funnest. Plus I love Uma Thurman.

melskmelsk

I saw this in theatre when it came out and WOOW was I buzzing coming out of it!

Valaree

Totally agree about the foot scene. I didn’t know about Tarantino’s infamous fetish when I first watched this and I thought it was a very effective scene! A quiet moment of struggling to make her failing body operate was very humanizing and a good way to offset the action.

Valaree

Totally understand why Bill was collecting these bad bitches. I’d want to catch them all too!

Valaree

I don’t think Tarantino understands the concept of “too much”. More is always better. Makes for fun movies but I fear for those involved in making them with him.

Rigo

It’s fair for you to feel this way, of course! His films just aren’t for you, as you stated. But I would argue that Tarantino depicts violence in a very egalitarian way throughout his filmography. Men and women experience SA and other kinds of violence pretty equally in his films. Also, in a film with a core theme of revenge, I would say that what happens to her in the hospital is one of several motivating factors that fuel her bloodthirsty vengeance. Is it cruel and gratuitous? Yes. But I wouldn’t say it’s completely pointless. It’s a trope of a lot of revenge stories about women, which fits into this film leaning heavily into homage.

Lailah Johnson

Right, I've seen a decent amount of his films some of them multiple times bc I appreciate his contributions to storytelling and filmmaking as a whole. That being said, the SA in the hospital genuinely is pointless to this plot. Her vendetta is against Bill. It is against Bill bc he literally killed 9 innocent people including her child (so she thinks). That was enough of a motivation for any of us to side with her and for her to want to get the revenge. Adding that scene does nothing bc she kills the nameless man immediately and then kills the orderly after her memories return but it's just another Tuesday, all she's focused on is Bill... all she cares about is her baby and that was motivation enough. Even if it's so explain how she gets the car, it doesn't need to happen, she could have easily snuck out undetected like she did, bc we dont even see her full escape, she changes bloody clothes and rolls out into the garage then finds the car. She could have done all that and just found an u locked car. Problem solved and no SA... I know rape revenge films exist and those films are mostly meh for me as well but yea i still think he let's his personal feelings show too much in his films and even when it includes some of his POC depictions im like....heavyyy side eye
