Walton Goggins putting on an active listening masterclass on camera oh dear lord

Ellen Noir

And Sam Rockwell sure knows how to make an impression.

"There's a level of caucasity..." YEP. Whiteness sees the rest of the world--whole people, whole cultures--as a crucible for our own self-discovery. I would add cisness too. It was so interesting to see so many viewers interpret That Monologue as a trans monologue. Guys like this have slid into my and many other trans women's DMs more times than could probably be quantified. These men only see trans women as a tool or opportunity for their own exploration of gender and sexuality. They are "trying to fuck their way to the answer," whatever that answer might be, and we're stepping stones. (I say "we," but we're usually talking about trans women of color here.) I'm sure there's some portion of these guys that might turn out to be trans, which you could say about any subset of people, but above all, to me, it's a monologue that unveils how interwoven the exploitation of trans women and imperial exploitation of the global majority really are--how foundational they are to each other. And on top of it all, it's rivetingly funny and sad.

I like the water drop thing. It’s the same as what Chidi was saying at the end of the Good Place - the wave returns to the ocean

Rockwell is quite a good dancer too, something we don't get to see in many of his roles, unfortunately.

I had a hard time watching this Season when it first aired and still having a hard time. I find the mother to be the most disgusting character. Just want to slap her silly every time she opens her mouth. Her comment ""But You're Not a BOOOOODISSSSSSST".....UGH!! And then there is the....just two brothers bonding, nothing incestuous to see here...lesson learned, don't do drugs. And then their is Rick, with the most incredulous look on his face, as he listens his old friend's story about gender identity and sex addiction. I loved that scene too, Frank. Add to that the Russian mobsters. So much of the craziness in watching The White Lotus is meeting all of the vacationers at the very beginning—then watching them mix and match to see if there is some kind of disastrous effect.

frankfreezy

That's such a good point there. Watching them mix and see what comes of it

frankfreezy

Fucking bars. I had a friend who told me about a shop owner in our town who was hitting on her. Dude was a fucking bigot. Apparently, he only slides in the DMS of trans people. and not in a good way. There was a name she called him, but I can't remember what it was. Fucking gross

a chaser?

“This is consent. Do you guys do that here? We just started.”

Susan B

He just blew me away in this episode.

I do feel the suicidal dad’s shame and desperation. Becoming a financial failure, suddenly and through my own carelessness, left me a mess back in the day. The panic of losing the things that you believe represent your value to the world is monstrous. And here’s a husband and father who knows that his loved ones value him for the comfortable life he’s given them.

Ellen Noir

LOL I know, every time he shows up to an interview, they make him dance. I wonder if Frank recognized him from The Green Mile...

Ellen Noir

Whoever said you wouldn’t gel with The White Lotus must have been a casual viewer who hasn’t gotten to know your interests and/or watching style yet. The one who said it wasn't good for reactions probably isn't into character dramas and prefers reacters perform for them rather than share insights and analysis. Luckily, the bulk of your community seems to get what we’re all here for because they haven't steered you wrong in the polls so far! Also, don't forget, season 4 IS coming but sadly you'll have to wait until late 2026 or early 2027.

Ellen Noir

That "we just started" line was so funny that I've repeated it multiple times in daily life LOL

Susan B

Pausing this to go vote. One essential race here in Georgia: replace corrupt Public Service Commissioners who are selling us out to data centers. I would vote for Walter Goggins’ character to replace them if I had to. Or one of the Russian party boys.

Ledgedancer

The way he enters the stage as Justin Hammer in the Iron Man movie (I think it’s Iron Man 2) is amazing. Just dancing around like he owns the place, giving RDJ a run for his money charisma-wise

KimM

On point!

There are some shows out there that are very dependent on shock value and they don’t stand up to scrutiny very well. I can see how someone who watched this show casually might categorize White Lotus in that cohort. Difference is, you can analyze the characters and their motivations in this show and it MAKES SENSE. It’s actually really difficult and unusual to make a consistently shocking show with well written characters. I’m not surprised people tried to steer you away, shows like this are rare and I don’t think it’s obvious how well written it is until you sit down and try to pick it apart. They don’t try to shock you by having characters do stupid or out-of-character things… they build dread by putting a bunch of fucked up volatile little folks in a big jar and shaking it. Crazy shit just happens naturally!

Susan B

And seeing them be watched by the little monkeys in the trees.

Susan B

“They build dread.” Yes! That’s it exactly. The dread isn’t just the knowledge that one or more of these characters will die, but that we will care about them by the time is happens. Even Tanya, played for laughs, was given scenes of great vulnerability before she met her end - I’m thinking especially of her crying at the opera - so that by the time she was trapped on that yacht at the end, I was desperate to see her survive.

Susan B

We did it, Frank! Georgia kicked two corrupt public service commissioners to the curb; California passed Prop 50; NYC has a young progressive Muslim governor; and voters in Mississippi broke their state legislature’s GOP super majority!

Susan B

Someone called this “a comfort show?” Yikes. 😬

Speaking of the rich family getting poor, it reminds me of a saying we have in Socialist circles: there are infinite possibilities for what can go wrong for a worker: they lose their shelter, they get into crippling medical debt, essentially they could lose everything. However, the worst thing that could happen to the rich ownership class is that they could become a worker.
