A Life Kept Simple (DxD/Hentai Chaos Gacha OC-SI) — Chapter 34 (Patreon)

Sona Sitri
It’s an odd thing to know of a person without truly knowing them. The leaked footage of the now-departed Zephyrdor Glasya-Labolas’ honour duel was a viral sensation in its own right. And, delayed by the controversies and tragedies afterwards, the Marquisal house was slow to pull the video off DevilTube. By the time they did, it had already acquired millions of views, likes, and shares, downloaded and passed around through other means. So too did Takezo Arima’s popularity reach new heights. Of course, he was known before that, in certain circles, following whispers of a baron somehow recruiting a Greek demigod, but there wasn’t a face to put those rumours to, then.
Or, indeed, a name until Notus Glasya-Labolas’ funeral.
And that was ignoring recent developments. To Sona, her sister seemed to live for the sole purpose of catching her off guard. She didn’t buy that the two were dating. If they were, it was rather early doors, anyway. That said, her sister was showing more romantic interest in him than she had in anyone for some time, which was at least saying something.
“Sairaorg Bael’s Knight has been retired.”
“YES!” Issei Hyoudou was on his feet three seats to her right, fist thrust into the air. Several people below them glanced up once he rushed to the balcony, dangling halfway over in excitement. “As expected of my master!”
Rias caught the back of his shirt and pulled him back to his seat. They had reasonably good seats, given both her and Rias’ peerage filled up a small section about halfway up the Pandemonium and slightly to the left of the enormous projection displaying Arima’s advance through the Olympian palace. Rias sat immediately beside her, with Akeno, Issei, Asia, and Kiba occupying the remaining seats to her right. Tsubaki was on Sona’s other side, followed by Saji and the rest of her own peerage.
The screens themselves were split between the various battles scattered across the mountain. At present, however, the largest was dedicated to Arima, understandably given his popularity. Beluga Furcas had lasted all of a few seconds.
“I knew he was strong,” Rias murmured. “I didn’t realise he was that strong.”
“I bet Master was holding back, too,” Issei supplied.
Kiba glanced at him. “You seem very proud.”
“Obviously!”
“Although...” Kiba’s smile widened. “Arima is quite handsome, isn’t he? You’ve declared yourself the enemy of all handsome men several times now. Shouldn’t you be supporting Sairaorg on principle?”
“T-That’s different!”
“How?”
“Master’s the exception!”
“Why, Issei? What makes Arima so special?” Akeno covered her mouth, shoulders shaking.
“B-Because he just is! Master doesn’t count!”
“Ara. Is that so?” Akeno leaned closer. “Could it perhaps be because of that little trick of his?” Issei went rigid as Akeno slid across the seat until she was pressed against Issei’s side, one hand trailing down his chest. “The one where he can make someone… cum with just a touch?”
“A-Akeno!” Rias’ voice came from beside Sona, sounding a little frayed and for good reason. Sona’s peerage squirmed amidst Akeno’s shameless flirting.
Rias’ Queen turned, smiling without budging even an inch. “...Yes, President?”
“Get off Issei.”
“But I’m only demonstrating. Besides, it’s comfortable. I think it’s helping to keep away from the balcony edge, no?”
“It isn’t!”
Akeno giggled as Rias bent over Issei from behind to pull her away. Naturally, Akeno resisted, wrapping both arms around Issei instead and pressing herself tighter against him.
“Akeno!”
“President, you’re making a scene~!”
“I’m making a scene?!”
“P-Prez!” Issei Hyoudou looked somewhere between terrified and delighted as the two started bickering over him. Beside him, Asia watched for several seconds before shuffling closer to him to hug his arm to her chest just like Akeno.
“A-Asia?!” He straightened.
“I-I would also like to sit closer to Issei.” Asia shrank slightly as Rias and Akeno turned to her but stubbornly kept hold of his arm.
“...Good grief.” Sona pushed her glasses up her nose and turned back towards the projections. Her eyes flickered up to the highest VIP tier of the Pandemonium for just a moment, Lucifaad’s pre-eminent viewing gallery for Rating Games, modelled after the Roman Colosseum.
Ordinarily, the entire tier of seats would be empty, reserved solely for the Satans and their peerages. Now, however, all four Satans were present… alongside the Underworld’s new and tentative allies. Chiefly, Azazel, Governor General of the Grigori, alongside his second-in-command, Shemhazai. But, more notably, the All-Knowing Odin was attended to by a white-haired, blue-eyed valkyrie in full regalia.
Even a month ago, that alone would be its own spectacle, but recent weeks had seen a rogue fallen angel cadre, the news that God had long since perished, and a tentative but cooperative peace between the three factions in the wake of a rising threat. The Young Devil Gathering, at least this time around, was being used as entertainment for wider peace talks. Between the Khaos Brigade and the dissatisfied fringes of the three factions, the Satans couldn’t risk making any other enemies, else they’d only swell the Khaos Brigade’s ranks.
That being said… One-Eyed Odin being a Rating Game fan was not on Sona’s bingo card. Neither was the past month, to be honest, but the world seemed to be heading towards turbulent times.
“President, who do you think will win?!” Saji said loudly, over the continued bickering, red in the face and green with envy.
Sona had to hold back a smile, looking at him. His envy and admiration for Issei Hyoudou were as much a source of strength for her Pawn as it was a shackle. She’d known of Saji’s feelings for her for some time now. After aiding him with his financial troubles and getting his siblings into Kuoh Academy’s middle school, changing his life so dramatically overnight, no wonder he’d fallen in love. But contrary to her expectations, his feelings hadn’t faded despite Sona making it clear she’d only fall for whoever proved themselves to be her intellectual superior.
Safe to say Saji’s chess skills left much to be desired, and even that was putting it mildly.
But those feelings for her, just as his envy over Issei Hyoudou for capturing Rias’ heart, were beneficial for his growth as a devil, at least up to a point. Despite her stringent standards, his care for her warmed her heart.
“Between Sairaorg Bael and Takezo Arima, or the two peerages, Saji?” Tomoe, her Knight, asked.
He blinked. “Um… both?”
“They are one and the same. If Takezo Arima comes out victorious, Sairaorg Bael’s peerage loses,” Sona said, Rias and Akeno’s bickering dying as those gathered turned to her. “I suppose it’s in our nature as devils, being of desire and whatnot, but strategically, there’s little benefit in fighting an enemy so strong when his loss guarantees the end of this match.”
Tsubaki made a contemplative noise, sitting next to Reya. “Though this way, Sairaorg Bael will keep Takezo Arima sequestered and away from Mary Naamah’s peerage. From there, they can be picked off easily enough, barring the werewolf, the lion-girl, and the oni. Though, in the end, all that matters is retiring the opposing King. That invisibility cloak Mary Naamah put on might make locating her more difficult.”
“What kind of ability allows one to control an opponent’s physical form?” Reya asked. “Especially someone so strong. Isn’t Gandoma Balam ultimate-class?”
Saji gawked. “Imagine they managed to get control of Sairaorg Bael and Gandoma Balam.”
“The match would be over by then. Were it me, I’d simply have Sairaorg Bael eliminate himself,” Sona said amusedly. “As it stands, however, I still believe Sairaorg Bael will win.”
“Wait, what? But you just said—”
“That this turn of events was merely disadvantageous. I still believe that Sairaorg Bael is generally stronger than Takezo Arima. They may be going fairly even now, but what of his Balance Breaker? I—”
Rias’ harrumph interrupting her was… irritating, to say the least. She turned to find her red-haired friend and rival equally incensed.
“Mary will win.”
Sona stared at her. “On what basis?”
“Does there need to be one?”
“Yes.”
“Well, then I’m rooting for her.”
“Because?”
Rias looked back towards the projections. “I like her. Besides, I don’t want to give those old fogeys the satisfaction. Surely you don’t either.”
Of course she’d lead with emotion first. Sona closed her eyes as that afternoon’s words played themselves back in her mind. She’d expected her dream to be doubted, but to be mocked and spat on certainly burned.
“President Rias is right!” Issei declared. “Master will win. I know it!”
Her peerage began to state their allegiances, Saji falling into an argument with Issei once he declared that Sairaorg would win. Sona tuned them out, looking at the projections once again. Discussing the odds was all well and good. In reality, any number of unforeseen circumstances could turn the tide. None more unforeseen than Takezo Arima’s oni familiar declaring herself to be Ibaraki Douji. Where had she come from and how Ibaraki Doujou’s successor managed to go unnoticed till now, Sona had no clue.
Safe to say, despite the rigged intentions behind it, this Rating Game was shaping up to be quite the educational one.

Kuisha Abbadon
His fist, as heavy as a mountain, slammed into her guard, having weaved through holes on top of holes to get to her. Magic was a no-go. It was the one thing Gandoma Balam couldn’t be hurt by, making him the strongest shield and spear alike. Kuisha knew what it felt to be on the other side of Gandoma Balam’s fists very well. It was akin to torture. Her greatest strength became her greatest weakness, and all she could rely on was Hole, the ability to open connected portals.
An easy ability to avoid given that both she and Gandoma were airborne.
“S-Sorry!” Gandoma grunted through gritted teeth as his rock-hard fist ground into her elbow. The force travelled through her body, blowing her through the air. It took a few dizzying seconds for Kuisha’s wings to steady themselves, and once they did, Gandoma’s own beat the wind to close the gap between them.
She once again threw a dozen portals in his way, using the bought time to extend her senses. Who was controlling him? Kuisha didn’t have a clue. She could sense all the signatures on the mountain, from Sairaorg’s demonic power and Takezo Arima’s magical energy fighting to drown the mountaintop to the numerous demonic signatures below it, friend and foe alike.
The only signature near her, besides Gandoma, was a sweltering, ominous energy that was neither human nor devil, and it was closing in fast. The source burst through the treeline, wreathed in hellfire and... standing on her own arm? Kuisha blinked. Atop the wrist was Ibaraki Douji, Takezo Arima’s oni familiar, somehow managing to keep her footing despite her ridiculously huge bone sword on her shoulder.
Naturally, Kuisha had questions, none of them particularly important once Gandoma came flying out of the last Hole she’d opened. She twisted aside. His fist skimmed her stomach closely enough for the pressure alone to send her off-kilter. Kuisha snapped another Hole open beneath herself before she could pick up too much speed. Blue sky became green forest for half a second before she emerged from another portal a hundred metres to the left.
“Kuisha!” Gandoma’s voice came from above, a huge fist cocked back. “I can’t stop!” His expression twisted. “Sorry!”
She opened another Hole that Gandoma disappeared into, emerging hundreds of metres down below her, immediately spreading his wings to arrest his fall. It should have bought her more than a few seconds. It would have, had his body been under his control. Instead, his wings snapped shut and Gandoma kicked off the mountainside hard enough to crater it, making Kuisha grimace.
Whatever was controlling him was good. It couldn’t have been through magical means, given his innate pseudo-immunity to it. Kuisha had already tried disrupting it with demonic power, and failing that, good old force. Distance clearly didn’t matter either, considering whoever was responsible had yet to show themselves. But there was no one around them that shouldn’t have been there. Gandoma was below her. Ibaraki Douji was getting closer. Liban, Ladora, Misteeta, and Coriana were scattered further down the mountain with their respective opponents.
A pulse of demonic power rolled down from the summit, and her attention lingered there for half a second too long.
“KUISHAAAA!”
Gandoma’s shoulder buried itself in her stomach. Kuisha folded around him with a strangled gasp as they shot upwards together, rising almost to the cloud-covered heights of the throne room. She slammed both palms against his back and opened a Hole directly in their path. They vanished. Kuisha threw herself away from him the instant they emerged sideways over the forest. Gandoma continued without her and smashed through a rocky outcrop. The entire thing collapsed on top of him. Thankfully, whomever controlled him was unable to wield his demonic power for offensive or defensive purposes. That being said, between his magical immunity, leathery wings, and devilkind’s hardy constitution, things weren’t looking good for her.
A laugh rang through the air. Kuisha looked towards it. Ibaraki Douji was close enough to make out clearly now. She was bare above the waist, save for the bandages wrapped around her chest. Below it, she wore baggy maroon pants, torn at the ankles and leaving her feet similarly bare. Her hair and clothes whipped violently behind her while the enormous arm beneath her wreathed itself in red fire.
Her grin widened. “There!”
Kuisha’s stomach sank when Ibaraki jumped. The arm beneath her shot forwards, leaving her to fall. Kuisha threw herself aside. Five Holes appeared in quick succession, the first swallowing the fist and the others opening around her at different angles. Ibaraki dropped through the air above. Kuisha raised a hand and a Hole opened beneath the oni, closing once she fell through it.
Another appeared half a kilometre away.
The flaming fist erupted from another portal aimed directly at Gandoma as he burst out of the rubble below, in flight. His eyes widened. “Oh, come on—!”
It smashed into his crossed arms, and the resulting boom flattened trees beneath him. Gandoma disappeared through the canopy. Kuisha allowed herself a breath. Gandoma came screaming back out of the forest.
“Oh, for goodness’ sake!” she cried.
He swung with a tearful-sounding apology. Kuisha ducked underneath it, opened a Hole in front of his other fist, and another beside his ribs. Gandoma punched himself.
His entire body lurched sideways. “...T-That was unnecessarily cruel!”
“You’re trying to hit me!”
“I don’t want to!”
“Neither do I!”
Something red tore between them in its ascent. Kuisha followed the blur’s ascent right as it hit the apex and slowed. Ibaraki Douji laughed at the top of her lungs, one-armed and terrifying, as she fell. Kuisha set up Holes in a hurry… only for the oni to veer away completely and smash an axe kick into Gandoma’s head. His eyes bulged and then he plummeted. Ibaraki continued falling for another second before her enormous hand swept underneath and caught her. She landed, claws scraping against the burning skin before she stood.
“Kuisha Abbadon.”
“...Yes.” She swallowed thickly.
“I have heard you tear holes through the world.”
Kuisha opened one immediately.
Ibaraki’s arm lashed out to point at her. Unable to help herself, Kuisha opened a Hole immediately so that the limb would smack her in the back of her head. The oni pitched forward.
She giggled. “Something like that.”
“Wonderful! You will be a fine consolation prize, then!” Her black-clawed hand went to the back of her head. “Leave me be, Naamah!”
Naamah? Kuisha’s eyes immediately swept the empty air around them just to be sure. “She’s controlling Gandoma?”
Ibaraki frowned at nothing. “I am aware! He attacked me first.”
Who was she talking to? Communication magic? Did she have to be close to control Gandoma through whatever bizarre ability she possessed? In that case, why couldn’t she be sensed? Was there some kind of illegal play going on here?
Gandoma roared from below as he hit the oni like a cannonball. She immediately disappeared off the enormous flaming arm as they went tumbling through the air together. Kuisha didn’t waste the opportunity.
“Gandoma!” she yelled.
“What?!”
“Left!” His body immediately jerked right. “...Sorry!”
Kuisha was counting on it, though, sending a lightning bolt towards the now-exposed Ibaraki. For all that Gandoma was immune to magic, she certainly wasn’t. The oni grunted out in pain, still holding her sword as she hurtled away from Gandoma and towards another Hole opened directly behind her. Gandoma came through it feet-first and smashed both heels into her spine. Ibaraki folded around the impact before shooting downwards. Her enormous arm changed course after her, but Kuisha opened another Hole in its path. It vanished, reappearing several hundred metres away.
That bought her a few seconds.
“Oh, no.” Gandoma’s wings beat thunderously towards her and punched. She opened a Hole, closing it around his forearm. Not enough to sever it, nor did she intend to, but enough to hold him there.
She grimaced. “I’ve got you!”
Gandoma’s face brightened until his free arm moved. He grabbed the edge of the Hole and ripped himself free, close to tears.
“I am so sorry.”
A roar of fire cut between them as Ibaraki’s gigantic hand crashed into his side. Gandoma vanished into the distance. Kuisha didn’t even watch him go because Ibaraki was already coming. Now she stood atop her rocket arm again, the bone sword resting over her remaining shoulder. Blood ran from the corner of her mouth.
…Kuisha was really beginning to dislike the battle-crazed woman. Ibaraki swung with a cackle, hellfire trailing from the blade into a crescent-shaped projectile. Kuisha dropped through a Hole. The wave of oni-fire passed over it, emerged from another, and came straight back at her, though she ducked it with animalistic precision.
“Again!” Ibaraki roared.
A dozen magic circles spread across the sky as Kuisha obliged her. The grin on the oni’s face only widened. Lightning came first. She threw herself flat against the enormous arm as several bolts converged where she’d been standing. Another Hole opened ahead of them. Ibaraki twisted the arm aside, narrowly avoiding it, only for Kuisha to open another directly in its path. They vanished.
Ibaraki emerged upside-down, and Kuisha blasted her off the arm. The explosion caught Ibaraki squarely in the stomach and sent her spinning through the air. Kuisha didn’t give her the opportunity to recover. More magic circles appeared around her, dozens this time, spread above and below the falling oni. Fire, lightning, and ice disappeared into Holes the moment they were fired. Ibaraki’s eyes darted around in anticipation.
Kuisha smiled and opened every Hole at once, lighting up the sky.
The oni and her huge rocket arm vanished in the barrage, explosions chasing her through the air as Kuisha continuously adjusted the exits to accommodate for her escape. Her sword cleaved through a bolt of lightning and sent a wave of fire behind it, only for another hole to turn her own attack against her as more magic hurtled in from her blind spot.
Ibaraki grunted as a hail of icicles burst apart against her muscled back. Kuisha opened a Hole beneath herself and emerged above the oni. Her heel smashed into Ibaraki’s face, sending her teetering off her arm before disappearing again. Ibaraki swung her bone sword through the empty air. A Hole opened behind her, and Kuisha’s palm hit the middle of her back, sending her careening towards the mountain with the screech of lightning. The gigantic arm came roaring underneath, and Ibaraki landed hard enough to skid along the wrist.
She buried her claws into it to stop herself from going over the side. Kuisha fired several spells into six different Holes and set them up to surround the dangling woman. Her body jerked as six lightning bolts lashed against her one after the other. Ibaraki twisted around and brought the huge bone sword down, splitting the bolt apart. The fourth came through behind her and blasted her in the back anyway.
“Enough!” Ibaraki swung.
Hellfire washed across the sky. Kuisha opened a Hole and the entire wave disappeared. After Kuisha opened another portal, the fire descended upon her, though the flaming arm banked sharply and carried Ibaraki out of the way. The flames washed against her back anyway. She came out of them smoking, fangs bared. Kuisha almost laughed. Now this was more like it. Gandoma had been a horrible matchup for her. Take away the magic she had spent centuries honing, and Kuisha was left trying to keep one of the physically strongest Rooks in the Underworld at bay with portals alone.
Ibaraki Douji had no such protection and had to get close; a horrible condition for an airborne battle. Let alone one where she lacked the wings of devilkind. Ibaraki seemed to realise the same thing as the arm accelerated to the ground. Kuisha opened a Hole. The giant arm swerved. Another Hole appeared directly in front of Ibaraki. The arm dropped beneath it, exactly as expected.
Kuisha thrust out her hand and opened a hole in front of her, smiting Ibaraki dead in the chest through it. The oni cried out. Her fingers slipped from the hilt of her sword for just a moment, and Kuisha opened another Hole underneath the weapon. It fell through. The enormous bone sword dropped neatly into Kuisha’s grasp. Damn, was the sword heavy!
Ibaraki stared at her empty hand, then looked up with those inhuman yellow eyes. “Give that back, devil.”
“No.” Kuisha smiled.
The flames of her giant arm swelled as she hurtled skyward. So, Kuisha veered left and dropped the sword into another Hole. A long string of seconds passed without it reappearing, making Ibaraki stop dead.
“Where did you put it?” she asked.
Kuisha shrugged. “Who knows!”
A distant boom rolled over the mountain as Gandoma flew through a cloud of smoke. Kuisha turned just in time for his fist to hit her squarely in the face. Her head snapped back. By the time she’d gathered her bearings, her teammate stood behind Ibaraki atop her arm.
“...You.” Ibaraki slowly looked at him. “You’ve interrupted my battle for the last time, Naamah!”
She hurled him. Gandoma’s wings snapped open halfway through the throw. His body turned in the air and came straight back.
“I DON’T CARE!” the oni bellowed in reply to Mary Naamah’s communication. “IF THE NEMEAN LION IS DENIED TO ME, THEN I SHALL HAVE MY FILL. BEGONE WITH YOU!”
The enormous arm shot upwards. Kuisha blinked when Ibaraki jumped off it. She went higher still, clearing the arm by dozens of metres before twisting in midair. The huge limb shrank beneath her, hellfire peeling away as it raced up to meet its owner. Flesh reconnected at the shoulder with a burst of red flame despite the blood streaming down the limb.
Kuisha’s breath caught as the temperature spiked. Ibaraki’s already sweltering presence swelled, flames crawling across her body until the air around her visibly warped. The oni had been roughly comparable to herself and Gandoma before.
Far above them, Ibaraki reached for something that wasn’t there. Her bone greatsword returned to her waiting hand after mere moments, spinning end over end. Ibaraki caught it. The blade ignited. Fire poured along its length and spilled into the surrounding air, growing hotter with every passing second. Ibaraki raised it overhead with both hands. Kuisha immediately opened six Holes in anticipation. Whatever that was, she wasn’t letting it happen.
Then Gandoma hit her from behind. His arm hooked around her waist and dragged her away from the portals before Kuisha blasted him off with a panicked pulse of demonic power. He barely moved. Kuisha twisted around his next punch. Another Hole opened. Gandoma’s fist went through it, but his knee slammed into her stomach before she could redirect the rest of him. Her focus slipped, and the Hole disappeared before it even finished forming.
Above, the heat continued climbing. Ibaraki hadn’t moved—or rather, the flames were slowing her descent. Fire spread out from the oni in every direction, an enormous red glow forming against the clouds. Kuisha could feel the pressure bearing down on her now, only a little weaker than the two monstrous signatures that had been drowning the mountaintop since the Rating Game began.
“Get off me!” she grunted at Gandoma.
“Believe me, I’m trying!”
Kuisha opened a Hole behind him and kicked with both feet, finally managing to send him through it. She snapped it shut and spun around. The oni came down from the clouds with both hands wrapped around the burning hilt, hair streaming above her. The flames surrounding her had grown so bright Kuisha could barely make out her body anymore.
Ibaraki brought the sword down.
“ŌEYAMA DAIENGI!”
Fire fell. Kuisha threw both hands up. The six Holes surrounding her widened at once, combining into one enormous portal just before the first wave reached her. It vanished into the darkness, and the heat disappeared with it. Kuisha grinned in relief. That could’ve been bad, to say the least…
Her eyes widened when another wave followed. Kuisha barely got the Hole closed before the second crashed into it. There wasn’t enough time to turn it back against Ibaraki as she brought another wave of fire down, swallowing them and an entire section.
“Kuhahaha!”
Scorched and parched as she was, Kuisha’s hands blurred. Holes opened and closed across the sky as fast as she could manage them. It tore through the cloud beside her when she twisted its path away, only for the descending flames to wash over her left wing. She dropped. The air itself felt like it was burning. Greenery disappeared beneath red and orange, the mountain’s stone running cracked and molten. Kuisha forced her damaged wing open and caught herself, immediately throwing another Hole above her. Fire vanished into it, but another wave was already behind it, giving her no time to redirect the initial wave. The inferno chased her across the sky, then something large came hurtling through the flames ahead.
“Gandoma?!”
His leathery wings spread, and Kuisha immediately changed direction, forcing him into the flames’ path. “Gandoma, fight her control, damn it!”
“I’m trying!”
Kuisha opened a Hole in his path. Gandoma swerved around it. She nearly stopped flying. …He’d never done that before.
“Wait.” Gandoma looked down at himself. His wings faltered. “...Kuisha?”
Another wave of fire rolled across the sky behind him.
“I’m free!”
Mary Naamah had let him go… oh no.
Kuisha started flying with renewed fervour. “MOVE!”
Gandoma shot towards Kuisha under his own power for the first time since this nightmare began, catching her around the waist as another wave engulfed the space she’d occupied. Gandoma grunted as Kuisha opened a Hole ahead of them for them to fall through. She tore open another Hole directly in front of them. Fire disappeared through it, but the edges buckled almost immediately. Kuisha grit her teeth, forcing it wider while Gandoma held her steady.
The portal collapsed, and they were both blown backwards. Ibaraki’s laughter followed them down. Kuisha caught a glimpse of her high above, falling through her own inferno while repeatedly swinging her greatsword, without precision.
Everything merely burned.
“Madwoman,” Kuisha breathed.
Gandoma coughed beside her. “Agreed.”
As she finally plummeted down to the ground, Ibaraki found them and swung once more. Kuisha couldn’t tell which way was up anymore. Heat surrounded them. She tried to open another Hole and got something scarcely larger than her hand before it collapsed. Gandoma’s grip tightened around her protectively, far too late.
The bone-hewed greatsword came down one final time, and the mountainside disappeared beneath fire.
