I skipped out on posting the line-work for this one because it was just too basic and it was lacking the full vision which the colour version provides. the text and the hologram wouldn’t have been visible and that would be confusing for people. Either way, I’m having a lot of fun with this text and image format, you know what they say, “show don’t tell“.  I’ll have the next one up soon. Applause for this page, the Tandrax are like the sloth from "Zootopia", but OP

Incomplete Machine

Ancient indifferent empires are so cool to me. I enjoy that you included renegade Tandrax as well who do care. I feel like the superiority complex will bite them sooner or later. They're impressive, but we've seen the All-Mother pull off some feats that are just as impressive. The stationary versions; are they just huge Dyson swarms?

Galm_1

The Tandrax are so goody looking. I can only assume their current forms are designed to move well in low or zero gravity. Were they originally from an ocean world or a gas giant? Or is their current body plan the result of extensive genetic engineering?

Justin Huynh

Are the Tandrax a society that has evolved beyond warfare and armed conflict?

Erika Spooner

If some of the Tandrax are psionic monks, could they have not acted because they're being influenced by the All-Mother? We saw that the connection to AM can be used to kill an Over-Father? Are psionic individuals more vulnerable to psychic influence than non-psychics? And could the All-Mother in theory destroy a Nomad-star by opening a wormhole to her dimension right on top of the Tandrax and using her superior psychic abilities to destroy them? Is AM capable of creating energy beams or moving things?

Martin Bispo

roughly how old is the tandraxian empire? I'd imagine they would have been in space for tens, if not hundreds of thousands of years if they're MOSTLY in dyson swarms at this point. Are they capable of constructing a full dyson sphere, making them a type II civilization?

CallumStephenDiggle

They no longer engage in war themselves. They have swarms of self replicating drones that process a systems resources before their arrival and then they just move in. There’s no need for them to engage in war, if there was life in a chosen system before them, it does not matter to them because the aliens host system would have already been processed by the swarms of automated drones, nothing can threaten the Tandrax technologically, until now.

CallumStephenDiggle

Thanks! Yes, some Tandrax see the danger looming and want to act, but this is not out of altruism for the G.U. Species, but rather self interest. If the Imperium are eliminated, then the Tandrax would be the next great threat to the Galactic Union. They are indeed Dyson swarms, yes!

CallumStephenDiggle

Their ancient past is obscure, it’s so long ago that even the Tandrax are left to speculate, their home world was devoured hundreds of thousands of years ago to construct their first Dyson swarm and the subsequent genetic modifications have obscured their evolutionary record.

CallumStephenDiggle

Erika, that is a fascinating theory and I must give it some thought! Yes, the All-Mother can affect psionic individuals. Her influence is more effective on Imperium life-forms because they are genetically primed to be receptive to her, but I wont discount her potential to highjack non-Imperium minds. To answer your last question, this will actually be touched on later on in the book in a unique way and I don’t want to spoil the moment.

CallumStephenDiggle

Hey Martin, they have been a space faring civilisation for hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of years, even they do not know at this point. They live solely in structures of their own creation, which are usually always Dyson swarms. Personally I do not know if a Dyson sphere is actually possible, I think a continuous structure would be too unstable, so I opted for the swarm instead. But they are on their way to becoming a type III civilisation, albeit slowly.

Martin Bispo

so they've been expanding and homogenizing solar systems for far longer than humanity has even existed... no wonder they became apathetic. a rigid sphere might not be possible, but it seems like so much energy would escape between just satellites. now of course this would take many leaps in physics, but do you think a dyson "net" would be more reasonable? I feel like given what we've seen just one star engine do so far, they could create a system of either flexible material tethers or some kind of energy field between more specialized star engines, in order to more completely capture the star's output. perhaps the capitol(s) of the Tandraxian empire could be the only place in the galaxy with the resources to do such a thing, though I don't expect we'll be seeing that in the comic lol.

Omar Molotov

I love how we not only get each page at the moment of release here; but even detailed insider lore like this

Zhouyi

Just curious if you have any theory on this, if they have Dyson swarms for this long, when did humans on Earth know of their existence? I believe we could probably detect the presence of a Dyson swarm in the galaxy right now if they were nearby.

CallumStephenDiggle

In reply to Martin: exactly! I hear you, the main problem I can think of with the “net” idea is that the net would need to orbit in two separate layers to create that cross cross effect, the net would really have to be a series of rings that counter rotate on different plains to create the enclosed net. Each section of the net would have to rotate effectively as an independent object following their line of the net like a train. The trouble with this is that the rings that are slightly further away from the star would be directing dangerously focused light down at the inner ring. I don’t know if you’d be able to have the net being a continuous object because then you’d run into the same issues as a Dyson sphere. But it’s a mighty interesting concept and I’m not writing it off entirely, I just went with the swarm because it’s what I see being the most feasible option I’ve seen so far. I had the same idea that near the core of the tandraxian empire, the mega-structures become ludicrous!

CallumStephenDiggle

In reply to Omar: thanks mate, that’s the glory of the Patreon, I will answer all of your questions in as good a detail as I can muster haha and you get to see every single page literally on the day of completion. I really appreciate you staying subscribed, thanks Omar!

CallumStephenDiggle

In reply to Zhouyi: I think realistically if we had sophisticated enough instruments of scientific measurement we’d be able to detect such things like waste heat, gravitational lensing, light levels and weigh them up against one another to deduce that they do not add up. Because whilst light would be escaping the star, when put to the scrutiny of investigation, we’d see that the light being emitted would not match the supposed mass of the star which we would gage from the effect of gravitational lensing on background stars. Ultimately, I think you’d have to know to search for such a thing, but it would theoretically be detectable. I’d say that the United Earth government would have some theories about the objects, but they had not been able to investigate by the time of the singularity (the unleashing of the All-mother).

Martin Bispo

what are the properties of the energy barrier the star engines use to protect themselves? do you think it would be possible for the Tandrax to create a similar energy barrier or field between(possible specialized) star engines, to allow a swarm to harvest power from the entire plane of orbit, yet still orbit freely? Just a thought, I just have a hard time imagining a species like the tandrax allowing a joule to go to waste if they could help it haha. absolutely loving this segment of the story.

CallumStephenDiggle

In reply to Martin: I’m keeping it vague on the specific properties of the star engine because it relies on some pseudo science involving the folding of the plane of space. But yes, I can imagine Star-engines being able to link their shields in a manner similar to that which you suggested. However, resource mining is handled by their autonomous Von Neumann probes, planets are harvested by them. I’m glad youre enjoying it and that it has got your imagination working haha!
