Here’s the latest infographic for the new version of volume one, there was an awful lot of content that I had to cut to fit this on just one page, but I’ll include all of that in a Humanity Lost timeline booklet that I’d like to produce some time in the future. Right, now I’m going to begin work on finalising the variant version of volume 1 to get it ready for publication. Curious Archive has been messaging me about the second video on Humanity Lost and I’m beyond excited, it’s on schedule for the end of the month. I’m trying to line up the release of this variant cover with the release of the video. Bear with me, I’ll be back with more pages for issue 8 very soon.

So this will appear in a revision of the first book as well? Last month I got my hardcover copy 🥲

CallumStephenDiggle

Oh no, I’m sorry! Initially there will be two versions of volume one, one with the wrap around cover and one with the new cover. I’ll most likely do the same kind of roll out for volume 2 with there being both being a wrap around and a single cover. If I were you, I’d keep hold of the version you’ve got, it’s a first printing edition.

CallumStephenDiggle

Well you’re going to like her upcoming speech where she explains herself then I think haha

Stefa168

Of course, i wouldn't send my copy back! Is there any other seller apart from amazon? The print looks good outside but the pages aren't glossy and a little bit hard to read

Davide

it's VERY similar to our history, this new order may happen even in our reality, but i gave us 300 more years. the riches want only cash and power, and if they are the ruling class this U.E. is possible. and some independent state are trash like them, North Korea in primis

Isaac Young

Very interesting, if humanity was already going down the path of unity and becoming one through the U.E then it was only a matter of time before the other nation states were absorbed and who’s to say if AM wasn’t made humanity wouldn’t inevitably become something similar or exactly what they are in HL right now as the natural progression of things.

Erika Spooner

I remember hearing that Megacorps had as much power as the U.E. within the colonies they had on other planets? Were there more freedoms and opportunities for social mobility on other planets? Were there colonies that were somewhat Utopian or like cults due to people dissatisfied with the U.E. leaving? How many people were able to move within the solar system and out of it? Was travel very restricted? Do you think the U.E. might have become better over time?

Omar Molotov

When you try to read a scifi webcomic and get hit by truthbombs and an exposé on IRL government corruption instead. Fucking love this series

Omar Molotov

Now I know why this stuff is on Patreon lmao. A whole lot of demonetise-able info here 👀

cornerflag77

This is so awesome but now I’m afraid Humanity Lost will never get a television series or movie…

nicholas

For a safe and secure society!

CallumStephenDiggle

Very true, I’m kinda sticking my neck out here, but I wanted to slip it in

CallumStephenDiggle

Haha thanks Cornerflag, perhaps you’re right! The studio could just leave all of the deeper stuff out I suppose…

CallumStephenDiggle

It’s mostly a cover, governments involve themselves in arrangements called public private partnerships in order to keep their hands clean and obfuscate responsibility, the idea with the megacorps was that they were acting on the U.E.’s behalf. I dare say there was some possibility for that, yes, on a very local scale. Mobility was still very limited, only a very small percentage of people were able to leave the system. Most traffic was between the Earth, the moon and the asteroid belt. I think that had the Human-Conglomerate war not occurred, given enough time the state of space travel would develop more and more, yeah.

CallumStephenDiggle

It’s an interesting one to ponder 🤔 I don’t know if it’s necessarily natural progression though, like some abstract force that’s just happening, I think will is definitely a factor here. Nonetheless it’s a very thought provoking question and one for people to think about.

CallumStephenDiggle

Unfortunately not as of yet, I know what you mean about glossy pages though, I wanted that too. I had few publishers interested, but they were offering me really bad deals that would result in me getting barely any of the profits, I ended up just doing it myself.

CallumStephenDiggle

That’s fair enough, it always feels more realistic to set it further off into the future and maybe I should have done the same or left the date out. Yes, very interesting!

Stefa168

Gotcha, we'll see in the future!

Fire_Warrior22

I remmember something in old lore that said that the UE uses a mixture of English and Chinese, is that still true?

CallumStephenDiggle

It is indeed, you can see a combination of Chinese and English characters in the backgrounds of issue five.

Fire_Warrior22

Nice, btw, what kind of government runs the UE? I know that they definitely aren't democratic, and that they aren't fully capitalist as they keep the Megacorps and most likely the other corporations under tight control, so what are they?

Samuel Daley

Glad you’re based pal. ✊

CallumStephenDiggle

I’ll be going into more detail with that in another infographic, but I can explain a bit here. Economically it is something called a command economy. It’s semi-capitalist, semi-socialist. The government operates for the most part through public-private partnerships. The thing with democracy is, within a large enough system and population, it’s practically meaningless. If that system encompassed almost all of the earths surface, the issue is exacerbated. Democracy just doesn’t work the way it is advertised on a large scale. Monied interests can buy out individual politicians, fund campaigns and buy media coverage. Media coverage is crucial in opinion formation and that can be controlled through various means. With large scale democracy the population is fractured into voting one of two ways. Camp red and camp blue proclaim to hold onto a vague cloud of values that ultimately aren’t even congruent with one another and the body politic picks from these two prefabricated, off the shelf options. So the U.E. is actually a democracy, it’s the money power (who truly rule) who select the candidates and predetermine the result that they want.

Fire_Warrior22

Cool. Also, what's the symbology behind the U.E's symbol, I can recognise Mars and Luna, but not the golden bits and the blue ball in lower part. Also will the other factions of the Orion Arm like the Conglomerate or the Kolaxan Empire get infographics like this?

Incomplete Machine

Can't say I enjoy this lore. It's too conspiracy flavoured for me; it's not that I can't see consolidation and tyrannical empire building by soft power & homogenisation- since that's been a thing forever, it's why Coca-Cola is everywhere - but I've experienced actual hate speech in my childhood. Seeing the idea that the social effort to stop people openly telling me I deserve to die or suffer because of who I am is some kind of conspiracy theory level social engineering project for world dominion isn't fun.

Ovarian Halitosis

That's understandable. I think in this case the use of the term is meant to convey the idea that, while certainly real, the label itself can be utilized as a form of suppression to silence or discredit those who would oppose an authoritarian regime. Similar to 1984's 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘦 or Hunger Games' 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 except that the term used already exists for specific actions, but in this fictional world has been manipulated. I could be wrong, but I do not think the purpose of using it here as a rhetorical device was meant in any way to convey the idea that it doesn't exist or shouldn't be taken seriously.

Incomplete Machine

The trouble is though that it *does* have a real meaning. Those two ideas are entirely fictional (in Orwell's case) or derived from the propaganda of a recognisable high control group (commonly called a cult, in this case Scientology with 'oppressive person' being a term within that church) and *don't* have an aditional meaning outside the context. In addition there's also the shape underneath some of the ideas: the idea that the 'international banking elite' *caused* fascism as a reaction, rather than fascism being born out of the human violence, pain and bleak economic circumstances present in post WWI europe (International banking elite is often code for 'wealthy Jewish bankers' among conspiracists). The idea that the federal reserve was formed as a control mechanism by such people and not another capitalist overreach. I'm not accusing C.S. Diggle of bigotry; his story explicitly contains a native race being colonised and suppressed by a capitalist outsider, then nearly destroyed by a genocidal one, and the last remaining pure human is a disenfranchised black man, so I think he's conscious of how oppression works and sympathetic to the people being oppressed (which is why I'm willing to have the conversation at all), but if this was my first encounter with his work id never have bought the book or subscribed. I don't need the obviously bad UE to be re-written as heroes; I don't even really need the idea of east and west eventually mirroring each other as oppressive states and then merging to change. I don't think that this is how it'd happen however, and I challenge the underlying assertions that it is based on because, honestly, I think they're dangerous.

CallumStephenDiggle

The golden bits are meant to represent the star-systems under U.E. control. They will indeed, I intend to do exactly that for the end pages of volume two in fact!

Fire_Warrior22

Cool, I can't wait. Thanks for answering my questions lad, and sorry for asking so many of them.

Ovarian Halitosis

Okay. Forgive me, but I'm not sure what the problem is. You disagree with the back story, thinking it is historically inaccurate? Well the good news for you is that this is a work of fiction! If anything, I'd assume the ideas and narratives you take umbrage with are right where you'd want them to be.

Incomplete Machine

Something being fictional doesn't mean it's not impactful or potentially harmful. Why do you think governments censor books at all? Im not proposing that as a solution either; if this is where C.S. Diggle wants to go then he can go there. But it is a harmful place containing bad ideas and dangerous misconceptions, and I don't think that should be left unchallenged.

CallumStephenDiggle

I’m sorry to hear that you have experience hatred because of your background or identity, it was never my intention to demean or to belittle what you have experienced at all. I try to be respectful and kind to everyone in life and I’m sorry if this upset you. The inclusion of that section was merely to show how what might at first be a good intention, can be used to work Ill, it is said that the road to hell is paved with good intentions after all. Like with many other things in life, things can be twisted towards ends that we’re not their original. An idea or an act which is ostensibly virtuous, or has a good motivation behind it, can be manipulated by those in power for their own ends in order to strengthen their hold on said power. But like Ovarian said, this is fictional. A lot of people had just been asking how the U.E. had come about and seeing as that was such a commonly asked question, I figured I’d include an infographic about it. I’m also going to do infographics for all factions in the story including the G.U, the Kolaxan empire, etc… It’s good to see that this has gotten people talking however.

Incomplete Machine

Thank you for acknowledging the discomfort I expressed, it's good to be heard. I will say, if the intent is to say that the UE twisted the definition of hate speech to enable government censorship then that could be made a bit clearer. Other than that though, I feel like there isn't much else to express. If further discussion is wanted I'm happy to talk; I look forward to seeing the next pages when they are ready 💙

Here is how I would rewrite this "As news of the existence of the order of illumination (illuminati sounded a little to cliche for my tastes) spread across Germany; the fear swept the nation and combined with the instability the country under went from the aftermath of world war one caused a political climate of paranoia which was projected onto groups who were deemed undesirable, mainly Jewish, Romani, and disabled people....Many groups of people were forcibly assimilated and opposition to this neocolonialism was twisted into being called hate speech. Both groups imperialist tendencies and romanticization of the past made them functionally identical, with their only real difference being their location, so in 2121 both powers unified."

CallumStephenDiggle

Sorry, I’ve only just seen this! I get where you’re coming from. The Illuminati have become overused and is unfortunately muddied in with many conspiracy theories, but the reason I used them here was because the Illuminati was a real thing in history. It was a secret society that was created in the Age of Enlightenment on the 1st of May 1776, and its founding members were some of the richest men on Earth at the time who possessed tremendous influence. The name Illuminati is literally derived from the plural of Latin illuminatus, meaning 'enlightened’, and the men behind the Illuminati were key players behind the scenes in the events that occurred during this period. It’s important to remember that what I’m writing here is a fictitious history for a fictitious universe, but I have based some things in fact to help the reader suspend their disbelief and to ground my otherwise extremely out-there story. I think you’ve misread what I was trying to get across here. I was saying that the philosophical foundations of a united Earth find their origins in the 1700s, not that the Illuminati were pulling the strings all along. I think you might have filled in a few blanks there that have been tinted by conjecture by others surrounding theories relating to the Illuminati. The focus of this text is not on Nazi Germany or their persecution of minority groups in Germany at that time either, hence why it’s only a single sentence in this text. The focus is more on the ground that was laid by the aftermath of the Second World War and how it led to the transition of power from the British Empire to the new global hegemon, the United States of America, and how this led to the formation of the Western bloc. This isn’t about imperialism or neo-colonialism; this is about globalism. In this fictional history of Humanity Lost, both the Collective East and the Collective West are false oppositions to one another, working in tandem towards a global government. Romanticism wasn’t a factor in this process; romanticism harps on the particularities of a group against the push of universalism; it is parochial in its very nature. Romanticism is the collective reminiscence of an entire people/tribe/nation on a mythologized past that helps them to develop roots that tie members of that society together through traditions and cultural bonds, which in turn gives them a sense of belonging. The direction of the United Earth and thus globalism is antithetical to this; it seeks to tear down boundaries and eliminate differences; it is a force of anti-tradition, of “progress”. Romanticism is actually what led to the creation of the nation-states that arose in reaction to the United Earth government. I’ll be creating an updated map of the Earth prior to the Human-Conglomerate war and the activation of the All-Mother soon for the back pages of Volume 2, so stay tuned for that!
