Couple thoughts about the drink. One--if you're looking for "rustic" sugar try getting some jaggery. It's basically sugar with almost no molasses squeezed out. Might not be the exact thing they had at the time, but it was a very popular way to transport sugar at the time, so it's very plausible it's the sugar they would use. Two--my understanding is that the dilution wasn't necessarily meant to slow down the speed the sailors drank the grog. You can't stop a guy from chugging his ration. What it was intended to do, was to make it much more difficult for the sailors to horde their rum rations. Sailors would squirrel away their four ounces of rum until they had enough to truly get shitfaced, and you don't want your press-ganged sailors getting hammered and falling off the boat and trying to kill each other.

I do want to try both versions, but realized I finished off my (appropriate style) rum in an adult smoothie earlier in the week... so time for a trip to pick some up! May be good for running around Dragon*Con Labor Day weekend....

If the sailors were given half an Imperial pint of rum a day, that's 10 ounces of 'proof' spirit (57.15 ABV). I guess they'd be frequently found drunk until the regular consumption created such a tolerance that they could easily drink a huge quantity of rum without it affecting their ability to work.
