Hi, so I'm going to give more context about the choices behind Ruby and Sapphire's wedding dresses. As you have heard, the wedding was kinda the reason why they got season 5 cut short. Everything actually started because in some countries, they would make Ruby look masculine to hide this lgbt+ relationship. Of course Rebecca was having none of this so she was very determined to make Ruby wear the dress and Sapphire the suit to prevent the censorship. Naturally, it created more conflict and they ended up giving her the ultimatum: wedding or more episodes.

I’ve heard that it’s likely they made sure this episode had plot heavy elements, like blue diamond showing up, so the episode would have to air. Otherwise, this episode is just a wedding which could have been subtly skipped over by platforms

This episode was actually a big FU to the censors lol: Fun fact one: Some tried to get around Garnet being seen as a gay relationship by making Ruby a "man" in localisation. Put her in a dress! Now they're "fucked" no matter how they try and spin it! Win-win! 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️ Fun fact two: as a sole Wedding Episode this could potentially be easily skipped over as a censor: so intwine it with a MASSIVE plot heavy one! Not only have Garnet in her Wedding dress the entire time, but also intertwine her wedding with one of the biggest moments in the series! Where the status quo completely shifts!! Imagine going from some previous episode to the next one! You can't!! The show becomes unfathomable if you skip this episode! 🥳 It may have taken everything for Mx Sugar to get this to air, and it may have cost them delays, some seasons and room to breath, but damn if they didn't grab the execs by the throat and do it anyway as a big fuck you. This episode broke so many records. Such a monument. Never forget. 👌

I remember Rebecca saying in behind the scenes that this wedding episode was intended to be its own episode, but the network kept rejecting it, so they had to tie it in with the diamond's arrival so that it couldn't be censored. And also because the homphobic countries would have no option but to show this episode since it's the ep with the most plot relevance so they can't just skip it lol.

To elaborate on #2: Some foreign countries made Ruby a guy, with a male actor. To stick it to them, they put her in the dress. Of course, that's the Doylist (out-of-universe) explanation. The Watsonian (in-universe) explanation could be many things, but the one I headcanon is that Sapphire already always wears a dress, so they wanted to switch it up to make it feel even more special.

22:13 I was upset too. But the biggest reason it was done like this was because it made it near impossible for the wedding to be censored or cut- people would have too many questions. I’ve also read theories that Ruby wore a dress because quite a few places gave her a male voice actor to attempt to make it “less gay”- though it makes sense in a simpler theory, Sapphire is always in a dress and Ruby is more of a tomboy, so swapping styles to dress up and turn heads makes sense.

In a lot of countries, Ruby was censored to be a boy to make it not gay, so for the wedding, Ruby wore a dress and Sapphire wore a suit so those countries would have no way around this ep to censor it then they tied this episode to a major plot point so it COULD NOT be skipped over. It was important and unskippable. It was brilliant. I also like how they did reverse their usual attire to make the day more special to them.

Big props to Rebecca Sugar and the Crewniverse for fighting for this episode! Putting Ruby in the white dress works as two fingers up to every censor that changed Ruby to a boy, while also fitting the show's themes on breaking gender stereotypes. Another major shoutout to Zach Callison for hitting (and holding) that high note at the end of the song!

Rebecca was really smart with this episode First: She put Ruby in a dress. The reason why isn’t just because she’s boy’ish or whatever. She literally is a boy in certain countries as a form of censorship, to make Ruby and Saphire a straight couple. So by putting Ruby in a dress, it backfired on those countries horribly, as they now have a boy in a dress. Now you might think, “oh, they could just not air this episode”. And you’d be right. EXCEPT! Second: They made this episode a big one plot wise. I mean, the diamonds literally invade earth personally. How do you skip that? Only the most petty countries will skip the episode. So, fun history behind the making of THIS episode (spoiler-free) This one episode was the reason the show was canceled. Rebecca Sugar wanted a gay wedding as a core part of Garnet's character development, CN didn't like that because they need to air the episode in other countries that aren't as "progressive" in terms of that as the US is. So what Sugar did was make the wedding ESSENTIAL to the plot. She made it impossible to censor and impossible to cut from the series. She gave Ruby a dress which prevented other languages from using male pronouns to describe her, then she made it have a big fight scene with the diamonds showing up, so that if a viewer were to watch the episodes in order and skip this one, they'd have NO idea what's happening in the next episodes or why. They put CN in a box and made them greenlight the episode, so in response, CN went "alright cool, by the way it's your last season" Now, evidently it's not the last season, and there's obviously more to this story, but to prevent any kind of expectation-kind of spoilers I'm going to leave this story here until you at least finish the movie.

Yes, but it's also most likely because Rebecca Sugar has said many times before that Ruby and Sapphire is inspired by her own relationship with Ian Jones Quartey. How she relates a lot to Ruby and Ian is Sapphire. So it's primarily based on what she wanted, and got, from her own wedding. The whole F U to censors in other countries is just a cherry on top.

The movie is so wild, because Rebecca Sugar was paying attention to the fan theories, and made the film a love letter to them. Full-on Broadway musical of Nora, and her Crystal Gems Bismuth, Lapis, Nephrite and Opal (new character for the movie), struggling in a post-Apocalyptic shattered world left behind by the Cluster. Together with the survivors from Beach City, they battle against Emerald's space fleet to conquer Homeworld, only to find that the Diamonds have retreated into their palace, broken emotionally by the loss of Pink and allowing their empire to run automatically by the Council - White's Pearl (original Pearl), Sapphire and her Ruby giants, and Peridot, who direct their armies under Emerald and Jasper (who's army includes all the Amethysts from the Zoo and original Amethyst). Nora and her friends realize that they can defeat their opponents through the power of Broadway musical numbers, homaging classics like West Side Story, the King and I, Oliver, Annie, and some others (Jasper being taken down in an epic re-imagining of "I am the Model of a Modern Major General is my favorite), before realizing that Nora is Pink Diamond, so she can heal the (emotionally) shattered Diamonds and bring peace the galaxy. Very cool, but I wish we had gotten more development for the Crystal Gems, and less time with the humans. It was cool to see more of Pirate Captain Lars, and Sadie Killer and the Suspects as the Jets from West Side Story was cool, but I hated that they made Rinaldo a heroic bad-ass, and Jamie just wasn't convincing as a sword-wielding romantic hero.
