"Giant minotaur" thats better then most people get, at least you noticed the hoof print there. And 38:08, I've never seen any reactions spot that.

man-of-bvz1n3ss

Yup, Weiss was fighting the knight in her trailer. The Schnee Manor has a lot of copies of that suit of armor for... reasons. Also, sorry to say Whitley's gonna die by the end of Volume 4. Neptune shows up to seduce Weiss after she left and decides to settle for Whitley, and he's so hot that Whitley nosebleeds to death. RWBY's such a dark and mature show. Ren's dad is not a Huntsman, he's just a hunter. As in, he hunts animals to sell for food, not a warrior with an awakened Aura and Semblance. Is that terminology confusing? Oh, like you won't believe. Nora's actually Salem's daughter and was planted in the town to summon that Grimm and ingratiate to Ren to annoy him so much he'd be an ineffective Huntsman. I think you might've glitched at 48:08.

Taigan

Really looking forward to Mosco’s reaction to the next two

NERD!

Just so you know Ren's dad was a hunter as in he hunts animals not Grimm.

Spadeas

Just want to point out, when baby Nora and Ren where under the house, a gentle music start to play, it was the instrumental version of a song from Volume 2, where Nora talk about how she fell that she fall in love with Ren and it is called, of course, Boop. So yeah, when you have this background and watch this scene, you become even more emotional. Also, I will always love the shot that we saw of Nora when they are on top of the mountain, when the camera is slightly above her, I find her beautiful in that shot and after so many years I persuaded myself that because that was the way Ren saw her everytime, so of course she is gorgeous (yeah i'm a Renora shipper).

Sam

yeah Weiss' semblances specifically allows her to summon creatures she has defeated in the past, including that Knight from the White Trailer, and the Boar she summoned at the party was the one she killed in Volume 1 in the classroom

Ryan

A Discord full of Frogsco photos? Chapter 9 (aka, Training Montage) Yang has found her balance, Weiss has found her strength, and Blake has found ... an ex, perhaps? "Ooh, lore!" Even better - lore and trauma! Chapter 10 (aka, Traumatic Backstory) Nora and Ren are both based on Disney princesses. (Nora's princess is a a retroactive coronation). And in true Disney princess fashion, their parents are already dead, or killed off within the first five minutes. Surely nothing bad will happen in the next two episodes and they'll just keep walking and walking and walking...

Jakkadyl

Can't wait till mosco gets to the part when Qrow says "it's morbin' time" and proceeds to morb all over the place

David Johnson

Hey, you wanted backstory and lore - it's not RWBY's fault if it's traumatizing. Oh wait...yes it is.

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

I kinda love the idea of Pyrrha having Amber talking in her head like that — although, with Amber's VA being Laura Bailey, the jokes could have got mighty awkward...

Sam

Funny that Thing is a creature from Scottish Folklore, the Nuckelavee

Episode 9: Ilia was mentioned back in episode 5 by the Albain brothers as someone who would be "elated" that Blake was back. She is also voiced by Cherami Leigh who is one of my favorite voice actors. Anytime she shows up in a piece of media I get very excited. "She's not coming back, Tai." ....Was that about Summer or Raven, I wonder. Oh STRQ (stark) lore, how you elude me. I have to disagree with Tai's assessment of Yang's semblance. It's not a temper tantrum, especially because she's very capable of strategizing while she's using her semblance (see V3x05). Also, using two fights as your baseline for this assessment is not a pattern. I agree you can't always charge head first into things, but sometimes there's also not 'a way around' the problem. Sometimes you have to meet it head on. And no, she doesn't just get one hit with it and then it's gone. Depending on when she activates it she can keep going for a while (see V2x04 and V3x05). If she misses she can swing again. I just... this scene with Tai has always frustrated me, especially in regards to how that helped shape a very vocal section of the fanbase's perception of Yang. Episode 10: The fact that Ren was the one to give Nora her first hammer breaks my soul in half. They are so cute!!!! And with that instrumental of Boop playing the background when he does!? Crwby, why do you hurt me? Also back in V3 Nora said this in the premiere: "And Ren and I have no parents so we have no home left to go to!" Babies... Ren's dad was just an ordinary hunter... Different from a Huntsman or Huntress. I suspect he was more hunting animals than Grimm.

Celly

Believe it or not, the infamous creature you really dislike (or just gives you the heebie jeebies) is from Orcadian Folklore in Scotland, Mosco. You might want to ask around with older folks right where you're from. The creature's name is the Nuckelavee . In fact, It was revealed in one commentary that Monty drew the vile creature even before he drew our main four girls! It was the first creation of CRWBY. This chapter, and chapter twelve of this volume, are my favorite two chapters of RWBY. I love the story of Ren and Nora and yes I'm a Renora shipper and will remain so forever. It has been estimated they were six or seven at the time of Kuroyuri. They entered Beacon at 17 years of age. They likely are the most well-working couple for battle purposes in all of the RWBY characters. Ten years of hell on Remnant fighting for themselves. Together. Of yeah, and Nora's parents. Better get a box of tissues ready. Salem killed them both in front of her and beheaded Nora's stuffed sloth (her favorite animal she imitated in the first volume with Ren). And Oscar. Well he called her aunt in the one episode. In this terrifying world where children are taught to murder, I imagine the story of his real parents is not a happy story, Mosco.

CrowOfAFeather

"Is this someone from your past? What's her name? Ilia?" Remember the Albain brothers who visited Blake's family earlier? "Sister Ilia would be elated." to which you responded "I don't care who that is!" lol I love your pronunciation for Zwei :D hehe So, something I noticed you've been confused with; Huntsmen and Huntresses are the terms for those who have attended one of the four academies. "Hunter" is never used as a term for them, and instead simply refer to someone who actively hunts for food etc. :) So Ren's father, Li Ren, is a Hunter, but not a trained Huntsman. I'm so glad you looked at the background and saw the Grimm ^^ Elijah didn't notice it if I recall lol It may have gone lost in Nora's ramblings in V3, but she does drop that Ren "can mask emotions" and whoops, something happened to the camera at 48:07

Magikltrevr

Interesting theory on the creature being attacked but I believe it does something far more sinister. It collects trophies. All that stuff in its lair is stuff from villages and people it has attacked.

Dre

You can really see Tai’s experience as an instructor at Signal Academy really shine through in the training scene between him and Yang. It’s something I always appreciate when I watch that scene.

LikeCat

Looks at our Chaos Incarnate (Molly you beautiful bastard, that is a perfect discription) - Wonder why? 😏

Phoenix_mercury

pop this in the discord bcz absolutely! it returns there an sheds what its "collected", that wasnt a "similar" arrow, that was his dads arrow

Magikltrevr

You're welcome to post it to discord if you like. I'm not in it.

morthasa

13:38 Mosco, please don't attempt to put a hit on the annoying side-character...

Arashi

Tai: "Not everyone's semblance is basically a temper tantrum." Mosco: *sees enlightenment* Homeless, orphan Nora must be hugged. More so because it's even worse then you think. Say hi to the first sighting of Nikki the **************! Just wait a bit more, this one is even more fluffy and cuddly then an Alpha Ursa. "I don't do creepy things!" Oh... well best stop watching then. They don't get rid of Tyrian for a good while. 'That' was the only shown case of Aura (and semblance) self activating. Trauma triggers yay. /deadpan. Ren is capable of masking and/or suppressing emotions, making it a cloaking effect from Grimm. The circumstance surrounding Ren and Nora meeting is horrible, but by god was the meeting itself adorable. The cave is, I'm pretty sure, Nikki's lair... and trophy room.

Geass

38:27 Now I know what my profile photo will be. :P Given where those things are from, I was hoping Masco would know what they are. Well, we will see when she gets a good look at it.

Wil DeYoung

The design of the "Mysterious Hoofed" Grimm is perhaps one of my favorites in the entire series. I think there's only one above that, but I cannot name it because it's in volume 6. I think most people who have seen it know exactly which design I'm talking about.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Sun was stabbed through the chest and out the back while getting electrocuted at the same time after his aura broke, so yeah he is banged up pretty bad, and I think Qrow was talking about Summer not Raven , but it could be anyone I guess. Grimm kill but also eat Humans. Just like one did with Torchwick.

Rachel Mae

well now we have context for Nora's rant for v3chp1 "...Ren and I have noooo parents we have no home left to go to..." it gets played off as another silly Nora moment at the time like her reoccurring dream about the ursa in v1 but nope turns out she was not actually exaggerating at all this time lol honestly this is why I love Nora so much she's set up at first as this hyper, goofy, comic relief character in direct contrast with Ren's cool and collected demeanor but crwby doesn't let her be just this one note static character, they give her depth beyond that

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Umm...this is RWBY. they turned us all into masochists. We now live for the pain and the suffering.

EmberPanther

Interestingly, the discussion Tai and Yang have about her semblance is a big point of discussion and debate in the RWBY fandom! On one hand, people have pointed out that a person’s semblance is extremely personal and having him call it “a temper tantrum” seems incredibly condescending, especially when she is still recovering from such a traumatic injury. On the other hand(the robotic one 🤪), people have pointed out that he was trying to make a point about how she just lets her emotions control her when she activates her semblance and that is partially why she lost her arm. The way I see it is that Tai was trying to give a correction that he felt was essential for when Yang went back into battle, and he wanted to ensure that it stuck. He knows that Yang is smart and clever but he has also noticed that often when she uses her semblance she allows her emotions to control her and seems to go on some kind of angry autopilot, so in this scene he is trying to remind her that one of the biggest factors in winning a fight is strategy, and that if she just tries to power her way through a problem she is likely to either lose to a stronger opponent or cause more hurt than necessary. His “temper tantrum” comment seems to have been a deliberate attempt to surprise Yang enough for her to listen to him, despite her stubbornness, and then he walked up to her and explained in better detail what he meant.

Vex Valor

I have been excited for you to get to Ren and Nora's backstory because that is what made me love them more and sold me on their dynamic. They have always had the other's back and help each other out. They started off as two scared children all alone in the world and look how strong they have become. Also this grimm is definitely up there with one of the creepiest grimm and oh god awful every time someone gets to experience that thing again. lol

Taigan

Completely unrelated to this episode but I was rewatching some older reactions and it just now struck me: the general/headmaster from Atlas is supposed to be the Tin Woodsman! Cyborg? General “Ironwood?” I’m probably the last to figure that out, but just putting it out there for the one or two slower than me.

Elizabeth McLaughlin

That scene where Ren gives Nora her first hammer always makes me cry, especially with that song in the background. They're playing the acoustic version of Boop, which is a song from Nora's perspective about her relationship with Ren and it's super cute - give it a listen if you want, it's definitely spoiler free. I have . . . opinions about Tai's relationship with Yang. And they aren't nice to him - remember that he shut down after Summer died and it's implied it wasn't for a short time. So I question his ability to give her good advice in general. Fun fact, this grimm is from Scottish/Orkney Island folklore!

Jason S

14:30 "These are the kind of shows that I wish people would encourage me to react to more. I wish more people would have pushed for this." Are you aware that people did actually do that in the comments of previous show reactions, and you berated them for it? You were legitimately angry at the amount of people recommending RWBY to you. So what are we to do?

Lt. Waffles

This is my favorite Grimm design in the entire show Also, I always took the cave scene as "this is the Grimm's den" where it comes to shed itself of all the weapons that are stuck in it after a battle and a place to heal. The dark spots all over are like grimm blood from the injuries; like a wet dog shaking off.

jessie H

Big boy is my favorite Grimm design! And I’ll give you a hint! Its origins are Scottish!

Cinder's Apologist

Tai's comment about Yang's Semblance is not foreshadowing; it's a nod to why Yang lost her arm. she saw Blake in danger, she got angry and fired up her Semblance, launched herself for a big punch... and she suffered because Adam was faster. he's just trying to get her to recognize that she needs to not be so reckless when using her ultimate ability. again, I urge you to finish watching the World of Remnant series. very informative about the kingdoms and broader world as well as certain other bits of lore that matter in terms of contextualizing themes. yep, Ren backstory is cute and heartbreaking. the more I watch it, the more it tugs at the heart seeing Ren at that low moment right before he took action and went to Nora's side for the first time. hate to say it but heartbreak is an integral part of the RWBY experience. not just for torturing fans, but showing how these characters keep moving forward - something that actually is mentioned in the opening theme song of this volume.

Cinder's Apologist

I was wondering if this Grimm did have any Celtic origins... and yes, the acoustic version of Boop really gets to ya. original is great but that version really does punch you in the feels. can't blame you about Tai. I try not to be hard on him but yeah, he isn't exactly winning Dad of the Year awards here.

Cinder's Apologist

it's also why they went to Beacon to become a huntsman and huntress. two orphans who lost it all, but also Ren taking that lesson to heart - "Take action, son" - so he could DO SOMETHING to protect those who were less fortunate.

Cinder's Apologist

well said. I've had my moments of giving Tai a hard time, but all things considered he wasn't being horrible to Yang. he just has a certain dynamic with his daughters, for better or worse. but he is giving her some solid advice in that moment, to be sure. something that needed to get through her grief and her stubbornness.

Dre

She’s yet to see the full Grimm, but it’s cute and cuddly compared to the typical illustrations of the Nuckelavee. Incredibly frightening. If I saw a drawing of it as a kid I would not sleep for three days. 😨

Luke Byers-Jones

Qrow once questioned if Ironwood "even has a heart".

milkystross

As a Scot I feel you might be able to recognise what that giant grimm is...

LikeCat

Niki the Nacklelaave (cant spell it) is (to my knowledge as a non-scot) basically a one-to-one to a Scot myth.

milkystross

Nuckelavee, its just as freaky in the actual myths

Lord_Chozo

This is Angus, my emotional support highland coo, and this is Hang-Us, my mechanical support highland bra

CRuhl_Para_TPT911

Kuroyuri is sounding similar since they found the partially finished Oniyuri, which was SUPPOSED to be capital for an Anima version of “When Atlas Shrugged” (it’s a libertarian dream novel). To make the whole connection with Ren knowing about the history, I’m assuming his village was one of those that were supporting the construction of Oniyuri and would have been under it’s protection if it had ever been completed. Hoping Yang will learn to moderate her Semblance.

VioletValentine

I absolutely love the instrumental of "Boop" playing when Ren and Nora meet

DragonBlaze

The creature is a nuckelavee.

Vegvisir92

how do you not know what that Grimm is? I would've thought that you of all RWBY reactors would have known...you should be disciplined in some way

Vegvisir92

i'm genuinely surprised she did not know

Vegvisir92

it feels wrong that she didn't know....i feel we should combat her claim of being Scottish due to her not knowing

SauceyRed

I had no idea the Tai and Yang scene was a topic of debate. I personally don't think of it that deep. Every time she's used her semblance it's because she got really angry, so while the semblance by itself isn't a temper tantrum, the association is there. I've never really had any negative opinions on Tai. Like other than him shutting down after the loss of Summer, I think he's awesome.

SauceyRed

Oh my god that actually makes a lot of sense! I've always been unsure of what it was since there were no bodies, so thanks for enlightening me lmao.

John J Ronald

So you can see by the movement in the trees they literally just missed it exiting its lair and heading down to the ruined village where Qrow, Ruby and Jaune are.

RaisedEyebrow

38:05 Probably one of my favorite moments in your RWBY reaction. I was WAITING for you in particular to see the Nuckalavee!
