AHHH EPIC!! SUCH A SURPRISE! seriously this is gonna be a treat to watch with you! Such a good musical

cosmotron

Okay, you're gonna be getting a lot of comments from people being like 'actually in the original this happened' and... 1, a LOT of that is gonna be misinformation that has gotten popular or is actually from another retelling, rather than any version of The Odyssey. There is a ton of misinformation spreading, things that neither have any actual place in these old myths or stories, let alone anything that is truly hinted at within this musical. 2, this is not trying to be a replacement for that story, and it is intentionally different in a lot of ways, as all retellings are. The Odyssey is one of the oldest stories that we still tell, and trying to argue about what is or isn't 'canon' doesn't work the way it does with typical stories. Myths, plays, and oral stories of that time were not all written by the same person. For example, while The Illiad portrays the Trojan War and takes place before The Odyssey, it is very clearly different in terms of characterization, or the way certain events don't quite line up. And while both stories are attributed to Homer, we don't even know if Homer was a real person, or if these versions we attribute to him are just based on the most popular versions or the ones that the person that put them together liked best. And there's a lot of debate on if they were even put together/'written' by the same person at all -- many think they were not. So trying to look for a singular 'canon' doesn't really work, just like with the myths at large. All of that to say, I really really love this musical, and I hope you enjoy it too. People can just be a bit weird about trying to insist what is or isn't "canon" or true to this retelling, as well as older versions of the story, when they don't actually know what they are talking about. Anyway, have a great time watching!!

Book Rook

WOOO! Come for the Steven, stay for the Epic.

Not me embarrassingly dropping everything else I was doing so fast haha 😂

This is a pre written message, aiming to correct any misconceptions that will inevitably float around as well as talk about some drastic changes. There will be one for each saga. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that EPIC is first and foremost an adaptation of The Odyssey; Jorge Rivera-Herrans took MANY creative liberties with the story and songs, focusing on themes that is more or less a modernized idea of what Odysseus went through. All the while ignoring that the Homeric poem was primarily influenced by the cultural norms of his time. First off, the Olympians never interacted with mortals without a disguise in The Odyssey, save for Hermes who, as the closest thing to an actual trickster god for the Greeks, tended to do his own thing. Second, the idea of "greeting the world with open arms" would be ABSOLUTELY ALIEN to any Greek of the time; they were a warrior driven society, and the idea of being peaceful was completely foreign. The main focus of The Odyssey were the rites of hospitality: the duty of the host and the guests. What to do and not to do. A great YouTuber to help understand the changes is MadNBooks, who offers immense insight into the historical and mythological context of every conceivable source that can be found on Greek myths and tales.

Alright so let's break down this crazy journey so far. Horse and the Infant: Honestly this is a pretty great intro into the musical. A nice set up leading into Just a Man (the first vid you watched had two songs that's why it was so long). And yeah my favorite part is everything from the little nursery chimes on. The second you hear those it's just like "well...crap." But also, Luke as Zeus is crazy good. Just a Man: Jorge absolutely kills it with this. I love his falsetto. What a way to start this. Baby murder! Full Speed Ahead: I love the call and response set up for this song. Now we've got our main goal, make it back home. And actually, Ody went to war with 600 men and none of them died in the Trojan War. He kept all of them alive. Open Arms: This is actually my least favorite of the Troy Saga, and a song I don't listen to often. Not that it's bad it just isn't my jam. I do appreciate Disney Princess Polites though. He's a sweetie. Warrior of the Mind: TEAGEN!!!! MY QUEEN!!! Best song of the Troy Saga in my opinion led by the ever fabulous Teagen Earley!!! Her voice! I can't! But her and Jorge's harmonies are also so good. Love how the first time they sing Warrior of the Mind together Ody does a little riff but Athena sings a straight note. The second time however, Athena sings the riff with him. So freakin good! Anyway, I can't wait for more! You are in for a ride!

cosmotron

I appreciate you also typing this up. Though I wasn’t personally into MadNBooks videos (as I am not bothered by the vast majority of these changes in retellings) I do appreciate correcting the misconceptions. The way certain things get latched onto as being ‘true’ is definitely frustrating.

Fen Hasselbarth

Why does this always happen! It's a canon event

EDHPlayer

My biggest “fUn FaCt” is regarding the fate of Anticlea. Not once, NOT ONCE, is it talked about HOW she died, merely the way that she died (broken heart), yet people read one person saying how she died which was made by a Roman several centuries after Homer and took it as gospel

CrowOfAFeather

Oh I can't wait for you to hear/watch the Cyclops Saga!

cosmotron

Yeah that’s one that frustrates me too. And like, you can take that as a version of events and say as much, but like I said in my own post, trying to argue it is what “actually” happened just isn’t really true, by the very nature of the kind of story that it is, and how many times it has been retold (and already had been, even very long ago). Tbh I think my most hated misconception that I genuinely have no idea where ppl got it from because it’s not as if Epic the Musical implies it at all…is the idea that Ares was a protector of women??? Then there’s their interpretation of ‘Spartan’ Penelope that drives me up the wall too haha, but I’ll elaborate on that another time.

Liam Gradwell

Glad the Mosco likes it so far. Also seeing her analysing the shots and framing of each animatic is always such a treat. 🤩🎉

Adrian

Like I love the music of Epic, though I do have a lot of beef with the /story/ of Epic for what I will admit are purely pedantic reasons (But in terms of music? 80% of the musical is an absolute banger) Like you said, it takes A LOT of liberties. It is a very SURFACE LEVEL adaption that takes more inspiration from modern anime than from the myths. It is heavily modernized and removes the bulk of the culture expectations and notions that were integral to the Odyssey, while also trying very hard to ignore that Odysseus was from the start not what a modern audience would consider 'heroic' (*Cough* the island of Cicones *cough*) and by Greek standards was also very morally dubious because his cunning problem solving like the Trojan Horse was considered dishonorable, and ignoring how bloated his ego was. I've also just got a problem with it's treatment of the Gods. But lbfr it's hard to find a modern adaption of greek myths that get the gods right so that can just be brushed aside. Xenia, like you mentioned, was so crucial. 90% of the Odyssey is the fallout of upholding or violating that sacred law (Polyphemus, Calypso, Circe, the Suitors, Telemachus, the Phaecians, Aeolus, etc. etc) but its pretty nonexistent to Epic, since when you try to apply it to the musical, things get messy

morthasa

I'm very interested in this series and, given that in my country they make you study the Iliad and the Oddyssey during middle snd high school, it's slightly uncanny to see a "spoiler-free" reaction to the plot. It's kind of like seeing someone who is completely unfamiliar with Shakespeare going "Oh, I like this Hamlet guy! I hope everything turns out alright for him!"

Callsign-Corgis

No Mircsy? :( her open arms and warrior of the mind were the best

Callsign-Corgis

Also, looks like we converted another Winion haha

Adrian

So! I love Greek mythology, I love the Epic Cycle of poems, and I love the music of Epic (even if I am ready to throw hands with the bulk of the storytelling in it lmao) But it’s best to keep in mind that Epic is a very **SURFACE LEVEL* adaption. In that it just takes the most basic aspects and themes. That's not a bad thing, it just means that don't use it as an accurate source for the mythology itself. It’s incredibly modernized, which majority of the culture, beliefs, and norms that made the Odyssey either ignored, removed, or misunderstood, while also taking a LOT of influence from anime. so! Some things about the Odyssey that are either not portrayed clearly in Epic, removed entirely, or were not included in the adaption for any other reason. Bc I think it's fun comparing Epic to the Odyssey, or expanding on things that the musical either couldn't or didn't showcase clearly enough. I’ll be using my own copy of the Odyssey / Iliad for any citations I make (Lattimore translation) First off! A lot of people either don’t know this (Or ignore it because it doesn’t fit their “Only Homer matters” canon) but the Odyssey is only the 7th of the 8 poems written for the Epic Cycle written around 7th century BCE, that tell the story of the Trojan War, from how it began in the Cypria to the Telegony which happens some-many years after the Odyssey. People really hate the Telegony for reasons that I will get into in another saga due to spoilers. However, only the Iliad and the Odyssey were accredited to Homer (Not that he created them, but that he’s the only poet we can, confidently, attribute to having written it down. These poems existed for far longer in oral tradition) The Iliad is about the end of the Trojan War, and the Odyssey is about Odysseus’ journey home where he runs into trouble after trouble because he is an egotistical dumbass who keeps earning the ire of the gods. Right now where we start off with? Odysseus has been away from home at war for 10 years, so he’d be anywhere in his early thirties to late mid forties at this point. The Trojan War is because Paris, Prince of Troy, stole away Helen to be his wife. Two problems about this: First is that Helen is already married, she's the Queen of Sparta at this time. Second problem: She had ALL the Greek Kings courting her, so before she got married to avoid a blood bath the kings made an oath that no matter who she married they would all band together to protect her and her husband should someone try to interfere. Well, Paris kidnapping Helen counts as interference, so now Troy has ALL THE GREEK KINGS waging war on it. Way to fucking go, Paris. You should have taken Hera's offer of being King of all Europe and Asia instead of Aphrodites 'have the most beautiful wife' The baby!! His name is Astyanax. He was the son of Hector prince of Troy. Now it’s usually Neoptolemus who is cited to have thrown Astyanax off the wall, and this is because of a blood feud. Neo is the son of Achilles, the greatest of the Greek warriors had a major blood feud with the Trojan royals (Hector killed Patrocles who was Achilles closest friend/lover. Achilles killed Hector and defiled his body in revenge, then Hectors bro Paris (Everyone hates Paris, Greeks and Trojans alike) killed Achilles) So when the war ended, Neoptolemus killed Astyanax by throwing him off the walls and took Andromache (Hectors wife/Astyanax’s mother) as his slave/concubine. While it may be horrific for us, because Astyanax is a baby, if Greek myths teach one thing its that WHEN FATE SAYS KILL THE BABY YOU KILL THE BABY. Because when that kid grows up, they WILL bring devastation. Take Oedipus for example, you might recognize the name from Oedipus Complex aka Mommy Issues. His father was told that Oedipus needed to die bc if he did not, he (Oed) would kill him, marry his mother, and ruin the kingdom. His dad couldn’t do it, so they basically left him to die to the wilderness, which resulted in him surviving, unknowingly killing his father marrying his mother and bringing a plague to the kingdom. Paris was the same, his parents the king/queen of Troy were told when Paris was born that if he lived he’d be Troys downfall. Well, he grew up and because of him the Trojan War happened and Troy was destroyed. So absolutely, if Ody spared that kid, no matter what he did, Astynax would grow up and wage war on ALL the Greek kings (Because it was all the Greek kings united against Troy in the war). Killing the baby was the only way to truly end the Trojan War, which was already a long, bloody, 10 year conflict. Combine this with the fact that the Trojan War was also a civil war among the Gods. Half supported the Greeks, half supported Troy. Zeus tended to lean Pro-Troy but he was officially neutral. The Troy-Supporting gods (Including: Aphrodite the Goddess of beauty, Ares the God of War, Apollo the God of Prophecy and Medicine) would have reason to help Astyanax grow to be strong and take his revenge for the slaughter of his home and family. One thing that Jorge removes from Epic is the very first stop Ody’s crew makes after Troy, which, considering Jorge really wants Odysseus to seem like this very heroic, morally upright individual who really struggles to make the hard choices, it was for the best cause there was no way he could have that scene in the musical and have the audience not see Ody as some kind of monster. That stop being when his crew set down on the island of cicones to resupply. They didn’t ask the city nicely. Ody immediately has his crew raid the island, murder all the men, and then he equally divides the women among his crew to have and do with as they want. (“From Ilion, the wind took me and drove me ashore at Ismaros by the Kikonians. I sacked their city and killed their people, and out of their city taking their wives and many possessions we shared them out, so none might go cheated of his proper portion.” Book 9, lines 40-43, Odysseus telling King Alcinous about his journey) Funnily enough, Polites is BARELY in the Odyssey. If I remember right, he’s only ever mentioned by name like 2 or 3 times in the entire story. He’s a background character. Epic makes him into a far more important figure. Polites idea of “Open Arms” IS VERY MODERN. It is something that’d get him thrown overboard in the Odyssey because no Greek warrior would believe in that. It’s an amazing song, one of my very favorites, but dear god does that belief go against everything the Greeks would have stood for. Keep in mind going forward that the way the Gods are portrayed in Epic is not exactly the most accurate to how they are in the mythology itself. There's a mix of trying too hard to humanize them and treat Odysseus as their equal (There are many things Ody will do that make you wonder why the Gods didn't just go "Nope, nu-uh" and smited him immediately because of the level of disrespect), ignoring that these are immortal beings who, while guiding humanity, have never BEEN human and can't truly relate and understand each other, and just...Zeus. What he did to my divine disaster that is Zeus. They make for entertaining characters, but please don't take this as an accurate representation of how they are in mythology, or how they were treated/treated others. As for the birds: each god has a bird that is associated with them. Zeus is represented by the eagle, as was seen in the first video. Athena is the owl. Little fact about Little Ajax: This guy fucked up SO BADLY during the Trojan War that he got Athena and Poseidon, historical RIVALS to do something never seen before. He got them to work together just to kill him. What did he do? He invaded Athena's temple where Cassandra (Princess of Troy and priestess of Apollo) had taken refuge and was praying to Athena, and r*ped her in Athena's temple before dragging her to the Greeks camp as one of their many war prizes. Naturally, even tho Athena was pro-Greek during the war, she was very much not a fan of what he did. So once the war was over she and Poseidon killed him. He's also called Little Ajax (Or Ajax the Lesser) Because there was another Ajax among the greeks during the war; Ajax the Greater. He got that name because he was just absolutely massive. A true giant of a man. He killed himself after getting in an argument with Ody over who got to have Achilles armor after Achilles was killed.

Zora Brightwood

This is why I like Mosco's reactions, she always has interesting things to point out

Zirkumflex

Huh, appearently there are people who did not have a greek mythology fixation at one point or another. Epic the Musical is more or less an adaption of the Odyssey, one of the two big epics in Greek mythology, the other being the Illiad about the Trojan war. The Odyssey is the story of Odysseus' travel back home after the Trojan war and it takes some time and is not just an, but the Odyssey. He is a favorite of Athena, godess of wisdom and war (among other things). Her signature animal is the owl and she is usually portraied with shield spear and helmet.

FernAndGames

Yesss, great reaction video! Really neat to see someone watch this with no knowledge of the pre-existing story, and I always especially enjoy reactors who really appreciate and delve into the animatics aspect of this musical. One thing to note: Odysseus (or Ody) is known for being incredibly intelligent and cunning. That's a big reason why he's a favorite of Athena, the goddess of wisdom. They're both 'warriors of the mind' - this is also why she came to get on Ody's case in that last song. Polities' message of greeting the world with open arms goes directly against her own philosophy. Dude's being pulled in 2 opposite directions right now by his best friend and his mentor since childhood.

BGTitan

She's going by a playlist. Same one that Morgan and/or Elijah used if I had to guess.

Chance

Hey, Musto. I'm going to wish you Happy Birthday. I don't know if I'm late or from early but it's one wish you a Happy Birthday and? Oh yeah, but Safeway to Elijah. And trust me when I say you're don't love.My Little Pony friendship is magic. It's what are my personal favorites? Have a good day and i'm loving the epic reactions so far

Someday Sera

I'll always hold a grudge against epic because a different youtuber gave up owl house to watch it and never went back. (and at the absolute worst possible time) That aside...epic is great.

Phoenix_mercury

Slight addition, pulled on two different directions by his childhood mentor *and* childhood best friend... Just makes it worse

Phoenix_mercury

Yeah the one thing I wanna add, solely on the telegon thing... It's basically the "is this Roman? No.... Are you sure? Your certain this thing can't be blamed on the Romans? Not even Ovid? Oh... Welp, just gonna ignore it exists" of the myths🤣

Phoenix_mercury

Yeah, here in the UK the odyssey and the Iliad is basically none existent... "English" class is things like Jekyll and Hyde

Phoenix_mercury

For point 2, Mr jalapeno has said that if someone tried to use epic to study for a test then they'd fail...

Phoenix_mercury

🎶🎶Waiting🎶🎶 for certain sagas(more specifically certain songs... Two guesses for two songs...🤣)

NatMcK7

wait are you serious??? That's so shitty holy crap the Owl House is awesome. At least you got the skittle squad here

NatMcK7

[Mod] Good to hear from you Chance! Just wanna let you know Mosco will still be trying out MLP along with the other two shows that won in the poll, just not for a little while. She has to get through Hazbin s2 that's dropping at the end of this month ad also the Mighty Nein, but she WILL get to My Little Pony I promise.

Baconbandit

Never clicked a video so fast 😂 excited to see this from someone who knows nothing about the odyssey

Adrian

I always find them trying to blame the Telegony on the romans hilarious, because Telegonus is in Hesoid's Theogony.

Callsign-Corgis

Yeah I know, I heard that part but she didnt go down reading the whole list (until later calling out the Artists for Troy) and Mircsy is a huge artist and I swear a top contender in Troy along with Gigi for their connecting song animatics

Callsign-Corgis

And absolutely no shade to the artists included in the vid, love Wolfy (the open arms Artist was a new one for me) the art was awesome, was just surprised

Eliteguard99

The funny part about the concept of Fate in Greek mythology is that now there’s a good chance he’s fulfilled the prophecy and someone’s going to kill him for revenge on the baby. There is no defying Fate in Greek myth baby!

Alex Malix

"I don't know if I could!" ...... Hand the kid to Morgan?

William Wilson

Let’s hope the rwby trend of all your favourite characters dying doesn’t continue 😂 Also don’t worry about it, when they get back to the island Odysseus actually changes his mind and gets together with Polites instead

Tallulahbell

So basically hand the baby to Perimedes, he's not really in any of the songs that made it into the musical but he is in one of the cut songs and it is a bop. He'd totally have drop kicked that baby off the wall

Tintros

I always enjoy someone being introduced to the classic tales (especially when enhanced or modernized) and their excellence. :) I remember reading Greek mythology as a wee lad ;)

Vic Walker

Oh boy, seeing someone with absolute no knowledge of the myths is definitely interesting lol most of the interpretations being purely based on visuals and song, in contrast of many reactors that had knowledge of the Odyssey and ancient Greece and their gods (especially with the last animatic from Wolfy that has more of the "original" odyssey than Jorge's adaptation (Ody killing the boar alone and not with his two friends, the throne scene representing when Ody made Athena Itaca's patron...), and also without the knowledge of the animals each god have as symbol.

Vic Walker

But don't get me wrong. It's amazing to see new people react to Epic with no knowledge, it's so cool to see the experience of getting to know each character through only the musical and how Jorge decided to tell the story. It's not common to see this kind of perspective. I studied Greek mythology a lot in school, I loved it soooo much, especially the Odyssey was subject of many homeworks, so I didn't have the full magic of discovering the story as it goes. Just the surprise of Jorge's little changes, the amazing songs and singers, and also discovering many incredible artists inside the fandom (watching each artist interpretation and designs is so cool).

Suplee215

Hust binged the musical today and dying for more content. Love that you already did this. And interesting perspective with lack of knowledge of the story. Lot of this uses short hand from the orginal story and knowledge of the greeks like the Trojan horse being such a big taboo both in war and their religion and society.
