Episode 5: "Soon, you'll be combat ready in no time!" That was just mean, CRWBY! Penny, we miss you! And then you hit us with the "keep moving forward"? RIP Monty. But it was nice to check in with how Ruby's feeling about all this. Like her sister, she has a habit of keeping it all bottled up. We've never seen Adam with his mask off. Episode 6: Freezerburn is a really cute ship. If I wasn't so hardcore on Bees it would definitely be my ship of choice. Alas, Bees own my whole soul. It's a curse really lol "Does he know where Mommy is?" Oooh boy. That's sobering. Wonder if he was thinking back to Tai and the girls, and how they lost Raven and/or Summer. Crazy. I've always found the parallels between Team RWBY and STRQ (Stark) to be pretty interesting. Starting of course with them being Oz's golden team. Both led by Silver Eyed Warriors (Ruby/Summer). We've also got the blonde who gets abandoned (Tai/Yang). The dark haired swordswoman that runs away (Blake/Raven). The only comparison I'm unsure of is Qrow and/or Weiss. But I'm sure someone else has the answer on that. I think one of the things with Raven and Qrow being able to turn into birds is that Raven makes it sound like it was involuntary ("what Oz did to us"). Whether or not it was, eh, depends on what Oz says I guess. But also, that ability is indicative of the difference between established abilities (semblance/Dust) and something that's new and rule breaking for our characters. We kind of side step it because the characters, to us, all have fantastical abilities, but straight up magic is fantastical to them. The writers tried to make that distinction clear to varying degrees of success, I feel. "I know." Oh, Raven. The garbage fire of a mess of a human being that you are. How you fascinate me. Also Weiss' eye roll at Raven was so funny. She's so done with this bitch. It’s implied with Yang’s line of “I’ve seen that bird before” that Raven has been keeping an eye on her throughout her life. Like you mentioned, we’ve seen a black bird several times before. Such as when Qrow was introduced during his confrontation with Winter back in V3, in Yang’s own trailer back before V1, and outside her window after she lost her arm during Salem’s monologue. It’s also how she seems to know that team RWBY got a similar treatment to what STRQ did back in the day. Possibly, along with her correspondence with Qrow, it’s how she knows Yang’s been looking for her. Raven, sweetheart, honey, why are you like this?! Gold playing in the background of the reunion, which is Yang's song to Ruby about how she'll always be there for her, really just hurts me so much. And Yang finally saying 'I love you' back after she didn't at the end of V3! And then Weiss joining in?! I cry. Every time.

I mean Raven and Summer was in team together, we don't know did she stop spying on Salem after she left Tai, so she can be so scared of Salem bc she knew what happend to Summer, we still don't know how she died, and what kind of mission she was on. She is aggressively trying to protect Yang from going after Salem, like she saw what happend to someone else.

Nope, we haven't seen Adam without his mask. The two brothers (NOT the gods lol) are Corsac (tail) and Fennec (ears) Albain. Fennec is the one who isn't fully certain about Adam leading :) So you did get the name right lol The sister reunion always has me teary eyed. The last thing Ruby said to Yang was "I love you" but Yang never replied. Now it's the first thing she tells Ruby when she finally sees her.. Raven really is, as Tai said, "a complicated woman." I can't wait to see how you reacted to a certain moment in ep 8 ^^

It's so nice to see how many things you notice, like when Ruby said "combat ready" and it triggered Penny memories, or Raven having the same cowlick as Yang (or, more accurately, that Yang got it from Raven). But what I was super impressed with was you immediately recognizing the Black trailer music during Blake's speech! I'm sure having watched it one or two [hundred] times had nothing to do with it :)

Ah, you're picking up on it! No, we have never once seen Adam's eyes. Ruby and Oscar only keep getting cuter and cuter scenes. Their ship is called Rose Garden, BTW. When we see the Albain Twins, notice the painting of the hooded figure they're gathered around. Not officially confirmed who that is, but a popular fan theory is that it's a God of Animals who the faunus worship and Corsac and Fennec are priests of. Notice how angry Yang gets when Raven says "Your Team's never let you down before". She's still missing someone in particular... "Meet the same fate of so many others" Hmm, almost like you've lost people yourself to Salem, Raven. Raven is a very complex character. She's someone you like not as a person, but as a kind of labyrinth for you to try to map your way through.

For all the criticism I have for Volume 5, it also has some really damn good character moments in it. Like Yang and Weiss, Qrow and the missing huntsmen sequence and [REDACTED]. As to spoilers for Volume 9 real or imagined I will only leave one word: Vore I will not elaborate.

"But can you really go back to trusting someone who has kept so much from you?" Thing is, Raven ... that can apply to you, too. You LEFT. Yang owes you NOTHING. Although, we still don't know the full story of team STRQ, so I am hoping for a flashback in the future. --- Mosco: "Damn this show and their cliffhangers! I wish it would pick up right where it left off!" Monkey's Paw: *curls a finger* Volume 9 opens with a dance off between the forces of good and evil. Cinder and [spoilers] and Yang and [spoilers] dance dueling tangos. The fanart it inspired is ... tasteful.

I wonder about the applications of Raven's semblance. Does it allow her to track people she has marked? When Neo knocked down Yang, we could see the edge of a portal at the top of the screen when Raven dropped down and attacked her. That means she wasn't a bird hiding in the train car, but portaled in. How did she know Yang was in danger?

On a rewatch, I'm really starting to appreciate V5 more. Sure, it's slower-paced than the rest of the show, but there's some REALLY good character moments, especially for Yang and Raven. Oh yeah, THAT scene.

Best part about RWBY writing are scenes like tbe one with the bartender. There are so many moments where the characters are dealing with a usual trope in fiction and instead of acting in the typical one dimensional way they show depth. A lot of that was shown with Yang being framed. Ironwood and others didnt just assume malice and lock her up. Or qrow realizing right away ironwood wasnt a part of it. The show does a good job even in the most minor of characters. Also, easy to miss fact but Mistral is the most openly anti Faunus place in Remant. Which is why the white fang is targeting it.

Raven’s behavior is VERY fun to pick apart, I’ve always gotten the vibe that you can’t take anything she says or does at face value. Raven immediately struck me as one of those characters where you’d have to watch the show in its entirety more than once to fully understand, like Ymir from Attack on Titan or Dabi from MHA. I rewatched the tea scene in Known by its Song a hundred times, Raven is one of my favorites

Info about atlas is a bit of a spoiler here. But those aspects are less open racism and more systematic issues. Still issues and inthink atlas is the bigger problem overall. But it isnt call you slurs in middle of the street issue or ban you from establishments. Mistral does seem to be that type of place. We also see in the novels. Spoiler for before the dawn. Velvet is very fearful of students from Mistral and they avoid going there for school due to the attitude. Meanwhile she doesnt have the same feeling towards Atlas or mantle. Certainly can make the argument that Atlas is worth for faunus overall though. Mistral is just more direct.

That scene between Oscar and Ruby talking about loss is still so, *so* fucking hard to watch. Knowing Lindsay (+CRWBY) were talking about Monty leaving too soon, and carrying on for him because it’s what he would want most, just…I still fucking miss him. Still give anything to get him back. But it’s never really the loss that gets you. It’s what gets left behind. Who gets left behind. How they remember you, and try to honor you. I love this show. And I love seeing someone fall just as deeply in love with it as I did.

Volume 5 is one of my favorites, and I am very happy that you are enjoying it! In regards to shipping characters, my thoughts are that I absolutely adore Bumblebee (Yang and Blake), I see and understand FreezerBurn, and I agree with the sentiment of Ruby and Oscar being adorable but Ozpin being a factor makes it very complicated. In regards to platonic relationships in this show, I love that even though so many dynamics can be ships, the friendships in this show are some of the most genuinely supportive and healthy ones in a lot of media! A good example is the friendship between Blake and Sun (I never really shipped/saw BlackSun as anything but a fleeting crush). Even if there were some romantic feelings on Sun’s side, he instead focused on making sure Blake felt as safe and supported as possible. I also absolutely love Weiss’ growth and empathy displayed in Chapter 6, as well as us getting to see a bit of her own vulnerability. When Yang gets pissed and shoots the table, we see Weiss trying to deescalate the situation despite seeming very nervous about Yang suddenly getting so mad. Then when they step out of the tent, we see her watching Yang as she is super tense, and her asking if Yang is ok then reassuring her it’s ok to not be ok was really sweet. We also see that when Raven gives her ultimatum, Weiss gets really anxious as she looks over at Yang, but once Yang made her stance clear, Weiss was nothing but unamused at anything Raven had to say. The way I have seen Weiss and Yang as a duo is as both extreme opposites and as two highly skilled individuals who respect each other, even if they aren’t on nearly the same wavelength. I also sort of see their dynamic as similar to me and my best friend, in that they try to work together to take care of things with different perspectives (once Weiss was able to actually have space from her family to breathe and grow).

As for Adam's eyes, you are probably thinking of the various scenes with Raven and her Grimm mask. Easy mistake, I know. One dresses in black and red, uses a sword and wears a Grimm-inspired mask. The other is the same but Adam. Spoilers on Volume 9? Well I suppose a lot of folks didn't like the genre shift from the previous volumes, but I do think they pulled the psychological survival horror off pretty well following Salem's zombie virus Grimm. Raven making her symbol being a legally distinct Umbrella Corp logo was a bit cringe though.

I have nothing to add this time around since everyone else mentioned core elements already. But I will say that I can’t wait till you get to Episode 8. It can’t come fast enough and I’m on the edge of my seat waiting for your reaction for THAT episode.

Raven is a complex and well written character, props to the writers. Alright that's all the nice things I have to say about her. I truly do hate her as a person since she's a selfish deadbeat who chose to abandon her daughter and family so she can go play bandit leader. Regardless of her reasons, she CHOSE to leave everyone but herself behind. I'm surprised Yang even bothered to hear her out.

I think the intent was Mistral is overtly Racist and quietly classist While Atlas is overtly classist and quietly racist. Not sure how well they showed it though. And as racism and classism go hand in hand the region that made it a plot point got both as traits assigned to it by most viewers.

I admit it took me a long time to figure that out myself, that she eats so much because she was once a hungry orphan, though it also can be that she's so hyperactive that she constantly needs fuel. But I like that "never has to go hungry again" angle. LMAOOOO so valid about Adam. he really is another grown man being a petulant child just because he can't get what he wants. and very good catch about the camera work for Ilia there! ahhh yeah... also good analogy with The Incredibles there. you are onto something! Raven is such a fascinating character, no doubt about it. since you're so focused on the lore, I knew you'd love this part. she raises some points that will definitely matter down the road, and it's great that you picked up on how Raven has been around in Yang's life, even if from a distance. I'm super excited to see how you'll handle the remainder of this volume. kudos for figuring out that Yang's purple eyes are a mix of Tai's blue and Raven's red! as for Weiss x Yang... SHIP IT!! SHIP IT HARDER!! fun fact: Miles Luna, one of the directors and writers for RWBY, actually made a remark in the v5 commentary about that specific scene you paused on... he said it has the energy of "Don't talk to me or my girlfriend" and he's right! I was hoping you'd pick up that detail on spacing regarding people riding on Yang's bike, and you certainly did :3

v9 spoiler: there's an hour long segment of every RWBY character beating the absolute shit out of American fascists. even the villains get in on the beat-down, because they can't believe our real world villains are this fucking stupid. also Pyrrha came back from the dead and had the most epic punching sequences alongside Yang before they both kissed Weiss on the mouth.

Freezerburn is so much fun for me, especially as a fic writer. their dynamic in show has been so fun to watch, going from barely tolerating each other to that empathy being displayed on Weiss's part while Yang is going through it. and of course, HEIGHT DIFFERENCE.

Since Zwei is based off of Ein from said show (they’re both corgis), I also have decent reason to believe that Spike Spiegel was an inspiration for Qrow—charming bounty hunter types who are also lanky mofos that sometimes walk hunched forward with their hands in their pockets.

Only half right about why Yang has purple eyes. Mosco doesn't need to stop shipping Freezerburn, so many people do, just don't be disappointed if they're never canon. But that also goes for every ship in RWBY tbh. There's so many ships in this fandom and at least 99% of them won't be canon.

I don't think it's quite a question of Corsac & Fennec ever turning on Adam, merely that they have contingency plans if Adam should crash and burn. They don't say it in so many words, but they've essentially plotted a Coup d'Etat against the legitimate government of Menagerie by targeting its Head of State for assassination. They intend to establish a quasi-theocratic dictatorship pledging loyalty only to Adam Taurus, but one that can outlast Adam should he fall from power/grace/etc.
