Despite some of the changes from The Odyssey made, this is my second favorite saga of the musical. Between the writing and the songs, it’s just really great. Speaking of, let’s discuss some of the changes. First off, the sirens were not fish-people in Greek myth. They weren’t mermaids. They were women with bird limbs. Second, the sirens were pretty much ignored; Odysseus had his men plug their ears with wax so they wouldn’t hear the sirens singing. He, however, did not plug his ears and instead had his men tie him to their mast so he would be forced to hear the song, and his begging to be released was unheard since his men had wax clogged ears. Then there’s Scylla. So, fun fact: The Odyssey is probably the oldest example of “between a rock and a hard place”, describing the choice Odysseus and his men faced. Now Scylla wasn’t in some sort of cavern, with a lair or whatnot. It was a straight, and it was shared with Charybdis. That’s the rock and a hard place: Charybdis is immovable and impassable, whereas Scylla can be passed but at the cost of six lives. The crew understood this, and they chose to sacrifice six of their own to get past her. Finally, the mutiny and subsequent punishment from Zeus. For context, Circe had given the men of Ithaca enough supplies to last a month, but once more the Winds did not favor them so they were stranded on the island of Helios, the sun god. Odysseus told his men to keep away from the cattle, and they complied right up til they ran out of food. The crew knew what the cows were, they understood what it would mean if they killed one. And they did not care. “Hunger is so heavy” indeed. Odysseus, wanting to not end up on the receiving end of a god’s wrath, snitched on his crew. He was heard by a daughter of Helios, who went to her dad, who went to Zeus. Helios presented an ultimatum: punish the crew, or suffer a world with no sun. Not much of a choice. So Zeus does what Zeus does, smote the crew, leaving Odysseus as the lone survivor.

Oh goody! I love sharing this particular part of the story with people. So with thunder bringer, what essentially happened was Helios (sun god) saw them harm his precious cattle. He went to Zeus and basically said “hey, they harmed my cows. If you don’t go down there and kill them all, I’m gonna throw myself (the sun) into the underworld and drive the spirits to the surface.” Zeus, now not really having much of a choice because that can’t happen, replied with something along the lines of “ok but because Odysseus spoke out against killing the cattle I’m gonna offer him a choice between him (a life innocent of what they were gonna be killed for) and the rest of the crew who actually did contribute to harming your cows”

I love this saga!! I think it’s my fav one. Such a good arc and every song an absolute banger.

As said the prophet: "I see a song of past romance" [sirens] "I see the sacrifice of men" [Scylla] "I see portrayals of betrayal and a brother's final stand" [Mutiny and Thunder Bringer] At the end of "No Longer You", the choir also sings: "Siren's song, Scylla's throat, mutiny, lightning bolt"

Poseidon sided with the Greeks during the trojan war so assisted them in the journey then overlooked some of the things that disrespected him when the Greeks were leaving after the war then Odysseus Blinds his son which in Greek culture is worse than murder So Poseidon is all out of being helpful and is actively screwing with Odysseus hence the return being a mess.

Suffering: This one is fun to see various different versions of just to see how they draw Penelope and how they either hide or toy with the fact that it's a siren. It's always fun to see people react to this right after Monster because it's such tonal whiplash, which happens a lot when you go from the end of one Act into the beginning of the other. Different Beast: Another that's fun to see all the different siren designs if you get the opportunity. But yeah, no we've actively chosen a route here and it's not pretty. While I'm all for killing the sirens because, yeah, they'd just move on to the next group of sailors, I'm also just like kill them. There's no need to overkill it by making them drown after cutting off their tails. Bro. Talk about extra work. Scylla: Ugh I love seeing everyone's interpretations of Scylla man, some people go full on horror and it's incredible. The six part harmonies for Scylla are so freakin good at adding that discord. Mutiny: Alright, so... a lot of people get so mad at Eury here after learning that he opened the wind bag, and I get it, I do. The argument is that him opening the bag got over five hundred men killed so he's actually worse than Ody but, really, no? Don't get me wrong, opening the bag and not taking Ody's word for it was a bit dumb. But he did not expect that opening the bag would lead to Poseidon killing all those men. That was never his intention. And who's to say Poseidon would have left them alone had they gotten to Ithaca. Ithaca is a port city and Athena is no longer protecting Ody. You mean to tell me Poseidon wouldn't have tried something? Again, I'm not defending Eury opening the bag, but there's a difference between that and Ody intentionally sacrificing men without their knowledge that this was what they were doing. And Poseidon wouldn't have even been after them if Ody had either killed the cyclops or not been a prideful dummy and doxxed himself. That's the point of all this, it's messy and neither side is completely clean. They're all making dumb or even wrong decisions throughout this entire musical. It's not black or white, its messy and grey. Anyway. Love the callback to not only Luck Runs Out but the Horse and the Infant. Either death by starvation or death by a god. Either way, dead. So.... yolo I guess. Thunder Bringer: Pride is the 'her' Zeus is referring to. Which is fitting He would be super suggestive and personify something like Pride. "Please don't make me do this." Not 'don't make me choose'. Ody already knew what he was going to choose, he just didn't want to be the one to pull the trigger. But alas, if he wants to get home to his wife and son... There was only ever one choice to make. I do love Neal's choice not to have Eury attack Ody with the rest of the crew. I'm a sucker for when the animators make that decision. Also, something to note. While Neal's animatic is incredible, the crew and Ody are supposed to be on a ship during this song and at the end Zeus destroys the ship while he kills the crew and Ody falls into the water. Regardless, we started with 600 men. Now there's only 1. See ya next saga! One of my top three!

Ella may Chadwick

Just so you know when you react to the next saga, there is a seven year time jump. Many people who just watch the animatics dont know this and get very confused when listening to the next saga

Mosco: The Gods are assholes! Me: Welcome to Greek Mythology.

Annieme

Curious fact: the only songs throughout the musical that are “names” are *monsters* (Sylla, Polyphemus, etc). There are only 4 songs like this 😉

HeroNotFound

Mosco in the first five seconds: Aww… AAH!

HeroNotFound

Hey Mosco, idk if you noticed, but the 6 men he lost were the 6 torches. He market them for death as sacrifices to get through.

HeroNotFound

Thunder bringer is truely the most daddy that “Daddy Zeus” has ever been lmao

HeroNotFound

To answer your question at the end about why it was so easy to get there and why it is so hard to get home, on the way there they had the support of almost every god, on the way back they have no support and are being actively hunted by 1 of the main 3

Zora Brightwood

Fun fact (s): The voice of Scylla and Ody harmonizing as well as the entire song itself is pointing out how Ody is no different than her. A monster trying to survive. Also, the six men who died were carrying torches bc Ody knew that would be the cost of one victim for each head of Scylla. Also, the one who stabbed Ody in Mutiny is named Perimedes, who has his own song as a cut song that can be found on YouTube. A funny thing is that Jorge also specifically gave Eurlychus a large sword, like something you would see in Bleach or Final Fantasy, bc Jorge is heavily inspired by video games and anime when making certain sequences in EPIC. For the island, they found it's a debate for fans on who the sun god they were talking about is, some saying Helios, others Apollo. I have no idea which side won, but it really doesn't matter. And at the end of the saga, the fatal blow from Zeus not only kills the crew but knocks out Ody, and he is basically floating in the ocean for now. Can't wait for your reaction to the Wisdom Saga it's my second fave saga after the Circe saga.

Gihellcy

I may say, this prophet might be dead, but fuck he's good ~

Edda

Honestly Eurylochus knew what he was doing. Death by smiting is a faster and kinder death than starvation. Then of course when the god shows up the survival instincts kick in, and it’s not so easy to face your death

TinIsHere

I think he was just desperate because he was starving. Hunger can make you throw all logic out the window

TheCasualNerd

So seeing as you're producing your own story now, Id recommend you really sink your teeth into the character writing of Mutiny, because there's layers and layers to analyze and its very educational. As a song its not my absolute favorite but from a writing perspective it's a masterclass. Unfortunately I can't go writing a thesis analyzing it here in patreon comments that'll probably never be seen, but theres a lot there to analyze

Katatonic-stranger

Loved every animatic artist, but Anniflanna was my favourite. Especially Ruthlessness and God Games.

Vic Walker

I know you don't know much about Greek mythology and the Odyssey, but I find it funny how you fixated on the baby he killed in the war but not a whole city that was SLEEPING after they faked surrender and gifted the wooden horse. Ody was ALWAYS a monster, it just depends from which perspective you are analyzing.

Suplee215

Loving these. Way too late a comment but its interesting. Odysseus is a change in the hero norm in greek myths and culture. Before him greeks are praised fkr brute strength and fighting close up more than anything. Odysseus out thinking his enemies is not the "proper" way to be a hero or "be a man". He alsonexploits the customs of hospitality at time or they are denied him and a lot of the conflicts are from that and disobeying them always brings wrath of the gods. And I believe this all stems from the Trojan horse. Because the horse is a holy symbol of posideon. Thsts why yhe trip back was so much worse. He gave a fake gift and a fake surrender using the god of the sea.
