Dreanner95

It is always interesting how the same show can leave completly different impressions on different people. When I was watching RWBY and watched this episodes, I had a complete different view of Raven. I was on Leo's side during their conversation because I didn't see Raven having any big plan other than keeping her tribe safe. I am excited seeing you react to the rest of Raven's arc.

Dreanner95

Also about the Faunas senses: I think it was implied that Ilia's chameleon traits were countering Blake's night sight.

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

That first episode contains one of the most brilliantly subtle bits of foreshadowing in the whole series and I LOVE IT!!

Dre

That thumbnail is almost exactly the same as Elijah’s for this pair of episodes. They even both brought their hands up to their mouths as they watched in amusement 🤣

BGTitan

Episode 9: Raven is such a frickin theatrical bitch. Keeps coming out of the tent with her mask and announcing her conversation to the whole camp. Like girl. But Raven calling out our group of baddies will never not be funny to me. However the best part is “Technically I was also a doctor but the rest is spot on” from Watts. Vernal is also another name for the Spring Equinox. So... another appropriate Maiden name. Love the detail that while Ilia was technically still part of the mission she chose to just… sit in a room by herself and not be part of the actual fighting until Blake happened to find her. What was that she said last episode? “There are those that stand by and let the hate happen.” Huh. Interesting. Episode 10: She still has her Faunus senses, but even night vision doesn't let her see black on black. Also, you see her hear Ilia's whip before she sets stuff on fire. We see her because she's a 3D model moving around. If this were 2D they probably could have hid it better. Oz's cane being a relic was a popular theory back during V5. So it's funny that they just squashed it like that. “Who are you trying to convince?” Damn Leo! Raven didn’t even have a response for that! Dude for a coward he also just dropped a sick diss track! This is officially the episode where it felt like the fight scenes were getting back on track. Not Monty level obviously (no one can really do what Monty did) but between the camera work and just the general weight of each hit it felt a lot less floaty. I also like that it was Ghira saving Ilia that was the final push she needed to start her redemption. I also appreciate that it was in turn Ilia that was the final push for the rest of Menagerie to join the fight. You even hear a person in the audience like "wasn't that the White Fang girl?" "Humans didn't do this. We did. Faunus. Specifically me. I did this." I want to praise both Arryn Zech (Blake) and Cherami Leigh (Ilia) for their performances! So good. Again, Cherami does such a good job with righteous anger. And timeline check: Blake and them are officially two weeks behind our main party. I'm so excited for these next couple reactions! It's going to be so good!

BrightHeart

In terms of Blake lighting the fire instead of using her enhanced faunus sight. the sight is not perfect as it'll still be black on black (Ilia's fully black camoflage in a very dark room)

Liam Gradwell

Mosco and Elijah are on the same wavelength when it comes to THIS scene! Blake is really strong here. 😍🌈

Dre

Oh this is something that only becomes clear with more time, but all of the maidens have the same access to a general elemental magic set. It’s just that they prefer to use some elements over others—Cinder is fond of fire for example but she can use other types of elements. The key difference between them is that each one can only open one specific vault.

TheCasualNerd

I'll point out nightvision isnt like day vision. Its a lot more black and white amd grey because color is a result of light. While Blake can indeed see better in the dark than most, if Iilia turns all black she becomes indistinguishable from darkness. Plus Iilia is a fighter trained in espionage/stealth who can move quieter and more subtly than most, and excels in sneak attacks. Blake might not be helpless like a human would be but being less disadvantaged doesn't mean the situation in that fight isnt dire. Also in regards to the beacon relic you mentioned something that ties into a theory I have about that, but here probably isnt the place for me to ramble on that lol

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

Also, I love that not only did Catwoman take out Batman, she then presented him to her loved ones just like a cat would :-D

Crow

Re: the hesitation and standing around during battle. That was one of the few nitpicks I had in the couple volumes after 3 and all the surrounding circumstances. Obviously I can forgive it. And it gets better. :)

CrowOfAFeather

Yay, reaction! So to clarify, the Maidens all have the same powers. Cinder just loves to stick with fire-based ones lol So "controlling weather" isn't unique to specifically the Spring Maiden. We saw Amber, the previous Fall Maiden, perform similar magic as well as conjuring lightning and freezing leaves into sharp daggers essentially. :) Lol yes, at the time it was indeed a popular theory that Ozpin's cane was the Beacon Relic, but yeah it's not. To be fair, I don't think cats can see something camouflaged in complete darkness. Low light, sure, but no. I don't think. Super glad you picked up on the timeline placement, because a lot of people tend to miss it. Blake's adventure took indeed place before Ruby's and co. Really funny how you and Elijah had the same reaction to Blake, ahem, subduing Ilia xD

Dre

The standing around during fights thing is really only super noticeable in volume 5 due to behind the scenes problem during its production. But the show staff learned from the criticism and after volume 5 tried their best to avoid repeating the issue when planning fights.

Vince

That’s basically the tagline of the show. IT GOT GAYER

Crow

Yeah I kind of used "surrounding circumstances" as a vague catch-all because I couldn't remember some of the specific production details from back then.

Stephen Mumford

"It's so hard to read her facial expressions 'cause she's got the fuckin' mask on tho!" "I know there's probably a reason she wears it, but..." I think you pre-emptively just answered your question as to why she probably wears it. Among other reasons—such as protection, intimidation, etc.—a mask works great at hiding the sort of tells that people familiar with those sorts of things would be looking for. :)

Suplee215

I love Ilia's story character stuff. One important thing to remember is shes an orphan who joined the white fang. Her entire support group is the white fang. Blake was able to leave the White Fang, get into beacon and had parents with resources to go back to if she needed it. And even then it took a lot of bravery for Blake to leave the white fang and she was still fearful of reprocussions. Ilia had no parents and presumably no resources outside the white fang nad no friends outside Blake not in the white fang. Even if she disagree with Adam, which it seems like she did a little bit, she would need to build a life from the ground up. And that can cause a cycle of staying in when you shouldn't and then justifying the logic why and slowly believing it. Which is similiar to something Blake talked about when talked about Adam "changing". That she was starting to justify it too. Good on Blake for realizing that in some way. Her talk to Sun about being there for her friends now, including Ilia, is a big piece of it. Plus Gara saving her. The fight here js a bit disjointed but I just chalk it up to fighting grimm being easier than people you care for. Plus chameleon powers and friendly fire being a bigger concern in this fight than most others.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Actually, Cinder's job is to collect all 4 maiden powers. We learned this in the beginning of volume 4 when Salem stated that she chose Cinder to be the vesel for the Maidens powers. Raven is as big of a coward as Leo. She says she cares about the tribe but that is all bullshit. She only cares about herself

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Ha, she just told you why. She doesn't care if he lives or dies. She is a murderous bitch. Stop liking her. Wait no...keep liking her so I can see her die

Taigan

I’m highly amused at the similar reactions from Mosco and Elijah to Blake pinning Ilia.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Leo was working for Salem long before those Grimm attacks on the school. He forget Cinder's, Mercury's, and Emerald's transcripts to get them into the Vytal Festival

supersoaker

You know what, it's a great decision to not watch the intros until much later. Sorry to say, but they get even more spoilery from here

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Thank you. You are the first reactor ever to call out the bullshit on turning off the lights. Even if Blake somehow couldn't see Ilea, she could still see her weapon, but she would still be able to see her move.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

That specific situation should have just folded Ilea. That must have seemed like a dream to her. Probably a wet one.

Curtis Murphy

Ilia is obviously a master of stealth. Obviously making herself black as shadow stopped Blake from seeing her even with her Faunus senses. Night vision isn't like "oh you can see at night like it's the daytime". It's not as clear as that

Curtis Murphy

Why? Obviously in-world Ilia using her faunus trait to black herself was enough to hide.

Curtis Murphy

That only depends on what you consider a spoiler

Geass

Contrary to what she told Cinder, I don't believe Raven intends to have them kill Qrow, given what she told Vernal. Rather, it seems like she is planning on using him as a distraction to keep Cinder and the others busy while she makes off with the relic.

Lazy Griffin

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but the reason the fights are slower and there’s more talking and just dead space where no one is doing anything is because the budget on this season was a lot smaller, and it was made in a rush, so everyone is projecting their movements and standing around and all that, taking movements that are a lot less difficult and time consuming to animate, and the time and budget was put into certain moments that, understandably feel more bombastic when you watch them. It's a lot less polished than volume 4 and the following volumes. If you notice, in this volume there are less fight scenes and more scenes of people just standing/sitting and talking, and when there are fights, people in the background disappear, the movements are slow and clunky, they cut away from action to focus on more boring shots, the characters seem incompetent or like they have no preservation instincts, it's mostly cuz they rushed the production and had less money to pour into the volume. That's why Sunn and Girrah were so nice as to let the fox brothers get themselves unstuck.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Not at all. To a human yes. Not to a faunus. That whole scene made zero sense. The ɔillar breaking for no reason. Yhe fire speading to half a floor in 6 seconds then Not at all after. No smokes anywhere near any of them fighting. It was just bad everything. It's okay. No show is perfect. Oh and all Ilea did was dim yhe lights. Does Blake not understand how a light switch works. It really was a dumb scene

ELS_Art

Ilia is a chameleon Faunus she is blending in in the dark.

RetroBeastto

Not you and Elijah pausing at the same point with Blake and Ilia. Haha you guys are perfect for each other

supersoaker

Having such obvious hinting at least to full blown showing what will happen, like the parts in the intro with Vernal (we don't see her until midway through the volume) or showing Lionheart, Watts and those tentacle spiky things around him

CrowOfAFeather

Yeah Gray D. Haddock (or however you spelled it) stole from the budget at the time to put into gen:Lock, so CRWBY had less to work with as well.

NeoScarlet

I don't think I necessarily disagree, but I tend to see the intros as more "teasers" of what's to come in a volume rather than outright "spoilers". I mean, as the show released people saw the intros, and in some ways I think the intros can create a lot of *anticipation* for things that might happen in a volume--keeping you on the edge of a seat of dread until the moment comes to see the events unfold. To each their own though, but I personally like it more (especially in a show like RWBY which thrives on theories and predictions of what will happen) when the intros are broken down and analyzed and those predictions are made.

supersoaker

I get that, but with RWBY intros it just feels a bit too obvious

man-of-bvz1n3ss

All the Maidens have the same powers, they just have different areas they choose to specialize in. Cinder could do the same stuff as the Spring Maiden if she wanted. While Blake can see in the dark, Ilia is a stealth expert trained in hiding by other faunus. It's a bit tougher than normal. Imagine what Ghira must've thought for a split second walking in on Blake and Ilia like that...

Ryan

Blake: "I try to reason with Ilia." DM: "Roll for persuasion." Blake: *rolls a 20* DM: "How do you want to do this?" Blake: "Pounce."

Wootcat

Not having Monty around also didn't help. Dude was a master at fight choreography.

Elana

It is perfectly normal to stand around in combat. Everyone knows that every good combat is turn based.

Arashi

I would say Cinder's upfront about being a Maiden for (probably at least) two reasons. She's speaking with/to someone who knows what that statement means and the power that goes with it and Two, being a Maiden makes her special. Better then all but 3 other women on the planet, and her mistress' plan is shaping to put her in front of all three of them. What could possibly be an outcome of that, I wonder? Raven proves that while she's a shit mom, she is the shit at mocking. There's still a fair amount of ambiguity over when Leo changed sides. My thought is that it was before the series started as Cinder's team came in under cover as 'Haven students'. I've heard others say it was sometime in the several months following the fall of Beacon. You may be a bit harsh on Blake, while Blake is a 'trained' fighter, Ilia is a trained stealth recon/assassin/saboteur, trained /by/ those who could see in the dark. Or it was because 'The Plot Demanded It'. And now we more or less wrap up the Menagerie part of the story. Only a little bit of femdom going on, it's okay, Ilia likes it. We also get to see the most mocked White Fang assassin who was beaten by a housewife with a serving tray.

Chloe Westcott

I'm generally not a big fan of people blaming RWBY's alleged "decline" on Monty's passing, but in terms of the fight choreography I actually 100% agree. Monty was an absolute master of the art of the fight scene, and it shows in the difference between the V1-3 fights and the V4-5 fights. Tbh it's not until V6 that I feel the show starts to find its footing again on that front. Not sure if it was time, budget, or taking the time to go back and study Monty's old work (Probably a mix of all those things) but V6 (and onward) is a clear step back up towards the level of choreography that Monty had brought before he passed. Don't get me wrong, there are some really good fights in V4 and V5 (Yang vs the bandits is a personal favorite) but overall it's a clear step down from what came before, and frankly, what comes after too.

Blazestar25

Definitely think you're misreading Raven's character at this point. Whether she wants to admit it or not, Raven is exactly like Leo. You say she isn't cause she has a plan, but that plan is exactly what Leo is doing. Stabbing Qrow in the back all for self preservation. Plus for someone who says she doesn't want a part in any of this, her plan is horrible. Salems main goal is getting the relics, and Ravens plan of taking the relic for herself does nothing but paint a huge target on her back. I do like Raven and think she's an interesting character, but ultimately I do think she's a coward who let's fear drive her actions.

Arcanity

To be fair Faunus aren’t magic they have night vision (low light vision) in the sense animals have it that comes with limitations.

MtVesuvius

We find out about Watts and Lionheart before the intro is ever played in the series. And sure, the v5 intro implies Vernal is the spring maiden, but we already know we're meeting the spring maiden before we ever see the intro, so I don't really consider that a spoiler. I get why Mosco doesn't watch them, but volume 5's intro is less spoilery than volume 1's.

milkystross

I think you're giving Raven a teensy bit too much credit while being so hard on Leo. The show is trying to convey to you that Leo and Raven really are just the same, they'll both give up anything else to preserve themselves Also its actually been said that its Cinders job specifically to get all 4 maiden powers, Salem wants her to be the vessel for all of them

RiekerVerse

you do realize animals that can see in the dark have limits, yes? the scene was brighter than it would be diageticly so WE could see what was happening, but Blake couldnt, for one eyes take time to adjust to low light, but also flashbanging herself with gunfire didnt help her night vision i'm sure. please think about it for half a second before calling something "bullshit", and in this case you've had like 10 years to understand this scene and still chose to be like this. as for the fire, there is likely an opening near the ceiling where the smoke mostly vented out, and the fire spread so fast at first because there were decorative plants up there that were dry enough to spread the fire, but the actual structure of the place took longer to ignite. why on EARTH would she go for the light switch? that is such an obvious trap it doesnt even bear mentioning, like????? Ilya turns off the light, blake runs for the switch, Ilya stabs her in the back. trying to track her in the dark, while difficult, was the best option Blake had.

RiekerVerse

ok but consider; Raven hot.

milkystross

You aren't gonna catch me arguing against that

Cody Schultz

It always makes me laugh when people forget that Raven is a great character, but a BAD person.

Cinder's Apologist

love seeing the Raven simping lmao. you are far from alone in loving Deadbeat Bird Mom. she really is a fascinating character - not a great person, to be sure, but fascinating in the role she plays. I know it seems like Cinder is craving that revenge, but be sure to pay close attention to some of the things she says. as for the Maiden powers, she is indeed after them - as per Salem's orders/promises. okay, so about Leo... this is based on a very specific theory from one fan that I respect for their insightful analysis; not saying it is completely correct, but the argument is very compelling. the theory is that when you put together all the available information provided by canon and semi-canon material (books and WoR and stuff), there are a few key points to remember: - Leo is the ONLY headmaster who is a Faunus - Mistral is arguably the most racist kingdom towards the Faunus (there's a reason why the White Fang has its HQ in Mistral, right?) - Leo presides over an academy in a kingdom that isn't very tolerant towards Faunus, and he clearly wasn't getting a whole lot of support from Ozpin before the Fall of Beacon - also, notice the way Ozpin deals with Ironwood who literally rolls into Beacon/Vale with his army versus any sign of Lionheart not following his instructions... in conclusion, Leo might be the Cowardly Lion, but he was also a Faunus headmaster under intense pressure in a kingdom that probably didn't give him a lot of deference, so when Salem came along... he probably caved because it was all just too much. again, this is a fan theory so it might not be what the writers fully intended, but there is a certain logic that works here. obviously doesn't change the fact that he screwed up, but he's not JUST an asshole; there are much worse assholes in this show. re: the fight scenes... so you've picked up on how wonky the fights are in v5. it's not something I personally have much beef with, but the more I go back and listen to what others have to say, the more obvious it is that they really did struggle with the fight budget - though I understand it's largely for reasons related to Rooster Teeth at the time that basically screwed over the RWBY budget. anyway, I get that feeling of watching some of these fights and going "huh??" because yeah, they aren't as smooth or tight as the earlier volumes... and it's one of those things where you can see the missing presence of Monty Oum among other things. BUT! there is one fight scene that you'll probably enjoy a lot ;)

Cinder's Apologist

yeah, never thought about it too much but it is a bit unfair to assume that Blake should be able to see everything perfectly in the dark. or that her having four ears means she should hear every little thing. I mean, Ilia was being pretty damn quiet while sneaking around! plus what good are those chameleon traits if she can't blend into the dark whatsoever?

Cinder's Apologist

hehehehe I almost forgot about that while writing my comment XD yep, that sure was a choice! pity that Ilia was too busy being angry to not be GAY and just submit to Blake "I Bring Smut To School" Belladonna... or should I say, Blake Bellabooty :3

Dayash

Something I'd recommend in regards to the intros, which dont get me wrong its fine to skip them as you have been (like personally as long as you see them eventually its cool lol) but also by the end of the season you will notice that they may not be as literal as you think they are (and i dont mean this as dont read into them bc yes youre doing good! But what i mean is for example in the Vol 3 intro there are fights between characters that never happen in the volume) Like the general themes can be deduced from the intro but literal Person 1 vs Person 2 ehh not as much and even Vol 4 has the 4 girls together when they were separated the entire volume, so yea OVERALL keep doing what youre doing its all good but pls dont feel like the intro is as honest and spoilery as it seems o7

Nicholas Cummins

To get extra nerdy: the reason this move works for Ilia and not other enemies is because of how night vision works. Yes, Blake has incredible night vision, but it's not full color (I'll spare the explanation of rods and cones, but look it up if you're curious). So if you could, say, change the color of your skin to blacks and midnight blues you would blend in incredibly well even to someone with phenomenal night vision.

James S

It's pretty clear that all the attention and budget for fights in this season went to that one particular fight. This volume is great for character development, not so much for action.

Vegvisir92

you really just need to let the episode play before freaking out sometimes

Lucifer_Crowe

Ghira carrying out people from both sides has always been super cute to me

Rixec2

Regarding the night vision thing, Pyrrha said, "Many Faunus are known to have nearly-perfect sight in the dark." Many, not all. Blake, however, does have it. Ilia just turned off the lights and combined that with her chameleon ability to blend in so well not even Blake's night vision could see her. So, Blake started up a fire to allow her to cause Ilia's shadow to appear.

TheyWereMarried

It's hilarious that Weiss fulfilling her role as the captain of the Bumbleby ship made Mosco ship Freezerburn instead 😂😂😂😂

DominusInFortuna

Yeah! Not a criticism, Mosco, but certainly the main reason for me screaming at my screen! xD "Let it play! It's explained in the next sentence!"

Christopher Herrera

So I’m learning mosco wants these episodes to last 3 minutes
