I like the synergy there between Mosco and Weiss in the thumbnail lol. Also chapter 5 is a perfect winter episode! Getting cozy in the creepy abandoned house.

Jittercritter

Ahh… THESE episodes. When these episodes came out there had been a huge dip in general excitement and enthusiasm for the show with how volume 5 was. With how hype episode 3 was, a lot of people were shocked and intrigued but also confused and a little uncertain about where the show was going. So much and very suddenly changed—the quality of the show had very abruptly gone way up which was great, but also the entire show leading up to this point was just very suddenly recontextualized. So when these episodes took a much darker and more mature tone with a lot of introspection, tension, and suspense a LOT of people were excited, it restored a lot of people’s faith in the show.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

The God's pretty much told her she can't die. Only when she realizes the point of life and death, or if the God's come back and destroy the world. I think that's what she wants at this point. It was 100% Cinders fault. They were supposed to retrieve the relic days before Adam was to destroy Haven. Yang thought she saw Adam wearing his mask . When Blake thought she saw him he wasn't wearing it.

Suplee215

I am curious how the new information make you think about Hazel's motivation for hating Ozpin.

LaviPastelQueen

Ooh I'm excited also my fav Grimm is in this volume it's the same as miles Luna the VA for jaune I believe

Jittercritter

BY THE WAY MOSCO!! Back in volume 4 when Qrow was looking up pensively at the broken moon and talking about the gods and you were like “I feel like this is screaming something at me I just can’t figure out what” I was FREAKING OUT. Here’s why: 1.) The moon broke when the god of darkness abandoned remnant, something the god of light clearly resents him for and tries to fix via Ozma as we see when he says “a terrible fate has befallen your race at the hands of my brother,” making it a symbol of the sibling gods 2.) Who are the other prominently split/fighting siblings in RWBY? Raven and Qrow. Which is why Qrow is SO torn up by Ozpin’s betrayal. Raven says over and over in volumes 4 and 5 that she doesn’t trust Ozpin and that Qrow shouldn’t either, and what do you know? She was right that he was lying to them. I think this shot is supposed to be foreshadowing. Raven is a parallel to the god of darkness, fleeing in an explosion of anger and indignation when they feel betrayed by the one(s) they trusted (in the GoD’s case its humanity, in Raven’s case its Ozpin, then Qrow and Tai for not believing or listening to her warnings), and Qrow is a parallel to the God of Light, trying to stay and do the right thing but not knowing how to and unintentionally making things worse (Qrow with his bad luck and drinking, God of Light with the reincarnation thing being more of a curse than a blessing)

Martin E Melcher

I know shes past the heartbreak, but im excited to see her reaction to my favorite Grimm (as well as the heartbreak)

BakaSama

The thing about Adam is that he isn’t supposed to be a major villain. He’s just a petty, abusive psycho-ex that really isn’t anything more than a nuisance (albeit a dangerous one). The show has its central villains with Salem & co. and they give Adam just enough to establish his character while not elevating him beyond his intended role.

Albedo12

Just to put this one to bed: Cinder cannot kill Ruby. Salem wants her alive She tells her this in V5C2, and of course in V4 Tyrion was supposed to be capturing Ruby alive too.

Dre

Also, in Volume 5 when Cinder, Raven, and Vernal are about to go down the elevator to the vault Cinder even tells the others to leave Ruby alive.

CrowOfAFeather

So we keep throwing shade at V5, marvellous. Very difficult to make a stellar volume when someone steals from your budget and you're still new to working on a new engine since V4-5 was basically done back-to-back. "Adam only had 5 people and no Aura, cunning, or brains-" He had more, but AGAIN difficult to animate full on fights when your budget is steadily bleeding. And we learn that Adam fled because he no longer had the element of surprise, and to lure Blake away from her friends. That's what he wants to do; he's a coward. It's funny how Elijah said nothing negative at all through V5 and even cheered when Blake decked Adam and forced him to flee, but apparently they're all useless and stupid according to you. "I'll stop, I promise-" I'm gonna assume it happens every episode from now to even V10. "Yeah but you had your chance to kill Ruby and you just stood there for 6 episodes-" Oh my god. "You don't want Ruby dead, but Neo does-" Friendly reminder that Cinder wanted to ensure the Relic and more Maiden Powers first, and likely take her sweet time on torturing Ruby instead of killing her in one go. She had Emerald use her Semblance on herself (Cinder) in V4 during training so she had a "target" Ruby to burn, and that's not a quick death. Cinder is sadistic if you haven't noticed. Yep, I'm gonna keep bringing this up for as long as it's relevant.

Ep 4: Ugh, the tension in the scene with Salem is just... UGH! I freakin love that scene so much. Salem is so intimidating and she never has to really raise her voice. Jen Taylor's performance gives me chills. The music also just gives me anxiety. In a good way. There's also the small and subtle moment after her big "you can only get what you want through me" speech where she just takes a moment, sighs and says "and so we must press on." Like this woman has wanted to die for centuries and she just can't. (Mainly because she also refuses to learn the "lesson" the gods wanted to "teach" her but I digress.) Then there's also the moment where she flips the table with "That wouldn't be fair now" and she said the same thing when the GoL told her he wouldn't bring Oz back. Oh, Salem, honey, you've learned so much and yet so little. Ep 5: Finally, the debut of Neo in the Maya engine. Look at her go! Gotta admit, very entertaining seeing her kick Cinder’s butt until Cinder brings out the Maiden powers. Also the reveal that she’s wearing Roman’s hat! Instantly cluing people in to why she’s after Cinder until she’s redirected to Ruby. Again, I will say that Cinder didn't go after Ruby last time because Salem had ordered her to be brought to her alive and she still had to get the Relic. That took priority. Ugh! My Bees! The miscommunication hurts me! Blake with the right intentions saying the wrong thing!

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

Hearing someone close to you say "I'm just tired" never felt so ominous as when you're in a large estate where all the inhabitants died in their sleep...

Ronix

amazing reaction

Tyrian: "Where is our dear Fall Maiden?" Me: "Where is the rest of your tail?"

One thing I like about episode 5 is Ruby and Weiss scene (I'm a whiterose shipper afterall) I love how when seeing Weiss in her blanket Ruby say that food made her feel better, she understood that Weiss isn't in the best mood and apply what work for her to her partner, because that the only thing she know (but I wish Ruby gave her a hug because my poor Weiss needed one). After that, seeing the bottles and Ruby talking about Qrow, Weiss understood easely since her mother is the same and I'm glad you noticed it. The best part about that is that it isn't said, it's all in the silence, expression ect ect The classic "show don't tell". When finally Ruby got the food, Weiss is first annoyed then smile at the end, feeling better that the start and that at that moment that Ruby smile genuinely because her mission "lift Weiss morale up" was a succes. Their is also the part when Weiss ask if they really need to go to Atlas, but supposedly you know where this came from now so I don't really put it on the same level as the rest. This is such a sweet scene between them of care and understanding that I always love to see it.

Rixec2

Weiss has been best girl since day one and deserves all the love and protection. <3

TheCasualNerd

Always love Neo fights. In every fight she demonstrates she's the more skilled fighter even if she's not the strongest. If Cinder didnt have the maiden powers she mightve actually lost that fight. And Neo is always kicking ass in other fights.

Ryan

Reset the "it has been ___ days since Mosco shat herself during a reaction." sign. And now that we know it's hopeless, the story slows down and let's us marinate in the dread. What's the point in going on? I'm so tired... I feel like Elijah's "I'm here if you need me" was for something later on in this marathon reaction recording session... 🍁

Taigan

Nnnnngggghhhh!!! Intellectually I understand, but emotionally it feels unfair that Mosco has recorded the next 3 episodes but we have to wait to see them. 😤

Cinder's Apologist

hehehehehehehehe >:3 yeah, lots of anger to go around. Oz did screw up big time keeping all of that hidden, and that's gonna be tough to handle as you can see. as for Salem, it's fair to say she's "not over her ex" lol. but I'm also of the opinion (based on one observer's interesting theories) that Salem's whole scene there serves as her telling herself she will not go and help Cinder, and that falls apart the moment she realizes that Cinder is on her way to Atlas to get the relic she failed to retrieve. something that a lot of people tend to fixate on is how the characters in show say "Cinder lost Haven because she changed the plan" and never stop to interrogate how that is just not true. did she change the plan? yes. BUT! it's because Raven fucking Branwen played hardball and was able to deceive Cinder as to who was actually the Spring Maiden. point being, Cinder needed a Maiden to cooperate to open the vault, and that meant either she kills someone in that camp on the spot - and reminder, she DID NOT KNOW Vernal was a decoy plus obvious risk of such a brazen attack going badly - or she goes along with what Raven demands to earn her cooperation. so Cinder was operating with insufficient information and stuck with having to fulfill her mission under tight circumstances. but of course, easy to just say "Cinder fucked it up" because everybody hates her. I have to laugh at your excitement over seeing Neo come back. you and Elijah really are of like mind in that regard! and it's valid. Neo is a fun character in design and concept. also super happy to hear you've been reading Roman Holiday! Weiss is indeed baby. Blake and Yang having a moment? and then it's gone? :3 but yeah, they still got things to work through, mostly on Yang's end. abandonment issues are real and she's going to need a bit more from Blake before she can move forward.

Arcanity

To me Yang’s issue with being protected is Blake is unintentionally treating her like she’s fragile and needs protection because of her disability. They would have always trusted each other to pull their own weight and have each other’s back but now Blake’s attempts to make up end up treating her in a way she didn’t before. Similar to her trying to carry the bag for someone who could deadlift her entire squad at the beginning of the season.

Lavender Onyxheart

Honestly kind of disliking the constant shade on vol 5, like yes there wasn't a lot of great animation, but constantly referencing it like it was CRWBYs fault when they did what they could with the budget they had just comes off kind of shitty tbqh

SportySpice

RWBY is surprisingly good at horror. Such an unexpected but satisfying detour. Love that this volume had the breathing room to do something like this. I think we are in “beating a dead horse” territory with the Vol 5 stuff tbh. It’s fine if you didn’t like it, I get it — more just a bit boring as a viewer to hear the same quasi-jokes three V6 reactions in a row. As others have noted, this show has explained multiple times that Cinder is under orders from Salem not to kill Ruby. She’s been trying to creatively get around it and it blew up in her face in V5. Cinder vs Neo fight choreography was fire. CRWBY killing it this volume.

Luminaxtea

It's pretty disrespectful and unfair, especially since multiple people have already mentioned all the behind the scenes stuff that contributed to V5 being the way it was, and yet she's still doing it.

Kitsune Kokoro

Yeah, agreed. Like, there's a lot of valid criticism to make of v5, but Mosco seems to be approaching it from the perspective that "CRWBY could've done better, but didn't", and that's really not the case. It's honestly amazing they managed as much as they did under the circumstances. Also, Monty's whole mantra was "Keep moving forward". We hear it in the show multiple times. CRWBY recognized that they fell short of the quality they wanted, action was taken to address the resource siphoning, and they put their all into moving forward and doing better with v6. IMO, they succeeded astonishingly well; v6 is one of my favorites. But Mosco doesn't seem to want to move forward from the v5 issues, and that's really disappointing. Like, I've got no issue with good-faith criticism. RWBY is far from perfect. But continuing to hit the same criticisms over and over and over again even after they've been addressed really starts to feel like bad-faith criticism. And long-time RWBY fans have had to put up with a LOT of bad-faith criticism of the show over the years; I for one have very little patience for it any more. Mosco, if things like the v5 issues bother you so much that you can't get past them, I say in complete sincerity, please stop watching and making yourself unhappy about it. I really want you to enjoy RWBY, and I really want to watch you enjoy it, but if your mind is so frequently on the things that you're unhappy about from volumes past I can't help but feel like you're not actually enjoying it.

Suplee215

This just seems petty.

CrowOfAFeather

This. 100% It doesn't help with her constant "I'm sorry, I'll stop, I promise." Like, three lies in 1 line.

CrowOfAFeather

Perhaps. I'm not proud of it, but I'm not gonna pretend all is well when it keeps happening. Especially since I know I'm not alone in disliking the shade throwing.

RavenFairy

I recommend the Christmas Carol from 1938 the first ghost appears is still really creepy.

John Hannon

When youre used to being the strong one (carrying Ruby and Tai after Summer disappeared), it can feel a little offensive to be told you need help.

Hollyhock

She's recommending the show to other people, i'm sure she's enjoying it. We can't expect her to react the way we might want her to, her job is to give her own reaction. Volume 5 is my favorite so i get not liking the shade but try not to take it too much to heart

Mare

"I've Never been happier to be wrong." Well....prepare to be wrong....a lot...in this volume and the next several LOL. I've said it once and I'll say it again... ...RWBY specializes in SUBVERSION as the writers love to "break patterns" of story telling. It's something that Monty always loved focusing on. CRWBY has mastered destroying expectations and tropes. I noticed you're very focused on the tropey and conventional stuff that you miss the micro-moments that speak louder in helping the audience determine the bigger picture in these scenes and help connect the dots. - Also it's never going to be brought up in RWBY Proper, but since you've been reading the Roman Holiday novel, just to remind you, Miss Malachite is the Malachite Twins mother (Militia and Melanie) from Yang's Yellow Trailer. Miss Malachite runs the whole Spider Syndicate (a crime organization that Neo is connected to). - Also OF COURSE, Cinder wants Ruby dead! Who is the one that gave her that damaged eye? Ruby! *Cough* remember the first time that Ruby unleashed the true power of her silver eyes? - The thing about Adam is he's part of Blake's Arc and by extension, Yang's. He's not supposed to be a main villain in the over-arching narrative of RWBY. - That line about "protecting Yang" made Yang feel useless. It's common when you lose an element of yourself where it is what is definitive of you and those insecurities build up and tell you that other's see you as a burden or useless so others pity you. At that moment, Yang felt that Blake pitied her which is honestly, insulting. Blake didn't intend for it to sound like that but Yang's still working on her mental and emotional state at this point. Also as some point, you NEED to listen to All That Matters and pay attention to the lyrics. You can understand what's in Yang's mind through that song. In fact skipping out on the accompanying songs makes you miss a lot of nuance that really helps. The RWBY narrative in the series proper, tends to keep moving forward but the songs themselves help the audience dive into the minds of these characters and what they feel at the moment that's shown on screen.

Andrew Hart

And I cannot wait to see how she reacts to 🍁 moment

SportySpice

I dont think folks are taking umbrage with whether she liked V5 or not. It’s just that some of the jabs are based on false information or are just kind of being run into the ground a bit. She’s got a ball busting sense of humor so I’d hope she’s someone who can take it if she can dish it. Folks have been pretty respectful here and mostly just trying to correct misconceptions or give context or remind her of things the show has already told the audience that she’s missing.

Suplee215

So noble. I suggest just giving constructed criticism (even if it isnt always seen as that) and moving on. But just my 2 cents. And i say this as someone who loves v5, its close to my favorite and it pained me to see some of the criticism.

Suplee215

One aspect of Cinder's plan is Salem's reaction here. Cinder already compromised the plan in favor of her own desire compared to Salem's. And she knows that will enrage Salem. So going after the relic first is an attempt at compromise. Plus she doesnt know how Ruby's eyes works and that is a huge trump card with Cinder's name on it.

CrowOfAFeather

I respect it, and you are right, but like others point out it's just beating a dead horse at this point.

EmberPanther

My interpretation of why Yang was so frustrated about Blake saying she would protect her is that she doesn’t need a protector from Blake, she wants a partner. Yang did need a protector and safe space in Volume 4, but she worked through that and got back in shape thanks to her dad. I can imagine hearing “I’ll protect you” from Blake could hurt Yang a lot, because it would feel like Blake is offering to help her incredibly late, and at this point it was probably a bit hurtful because it implies that Blake doesn’t see the growth she fought tooth and nail for.

Suplee215

Thats the entire point of a reaction. To react and make comments that come to mind even if its beating a dead horse.

Arashi

Of course Maria's a big name, she's Ozma's younger sister's, aunt's, niece's former roommate. You know, family. The Coming Storm and Alone in the Woods (next chapter's title) are some of the most amazingly psychological horror/actual horror in the show. The Nikki encounter and build-up were good, but this last chapter is just peak. Still, first set of hints that the girls aren't quite up to Beacon days level of mental stability yet, some wounds are just scabbed over, not actually healed. And some are just getting cut open once more. My thought is that quite horror is 'worse' then sudden loud lashing because it implies more thought and/or malice from the source.

CrowOfAFeather

Not necessary to beat a dead horse or throw shade/jab at something you don't like consistently. Especially since she seems to be under the assumption that CRWBY "could've done better, but chose not to" when it was literally a decision forced upon them.

May

I see your point, it’d be like throwing shade at The Owl House Season 3 for being rushed even though it was Disney that cut the show short and they just had to try to make do. It’s also a bit of misunderstanding on her part. At least when it comes to Cinder and Ruby there’s a reason why Cinder didn’t fight Ruby. Salem already specifically said she wanted Ruby alive, and Cinder knows better than to go against Salem. Therefore, there’s really no reason for Cinder to fight Ruby if she’s not even allowed to kill her. The more logical thing to do is to prioritize getting the maiden powers and the relic then bring Ruby back with her to Salem. It’s actually the smarter thing to do. Hell even if she could kill Ruby, getting the maiden powers first would still be better, as it would make killing Ruby/everyone trying to protect her even easier with a lower chance of failure.

SportySpice

I probably wrote similar on Elijah’s reaction, but I think Yang’s reaction is layered. (1) I think one element is the same as in Ep 1 when Blake was trying to help with Yang’s bag — that Yang is being pitied or needs protection. That has to sting, especially since she’s the “strong one”. (2) Yang wants partnership, not imbalance. Yang doesn’t open up to many people but readily opens up to Blake (about Raven in V2 and Adam/PTSD here). Blake saying “I promise I’ll be there” gets a soft smile because it’s about mutuality (echoing Yang saying last volume she wanted to be there for Blake and vice versa). “I’ll protect you” makes it feel like Blake is there out of guilt and isnt there to meet halfway. (3) Blake’s last form of “protecting Yang” was running away. Maybe it sets off alarm bells to Yang.

Joey Visser

Mosco...Maria Said close the door Cuz she thought she was already inside...Cuz she's currently Blind

Joey Visser

Yuuup same here, It kinda just kills the Vibe

man-of-bvz1n3ss

I don't think she's reading Patreon comments, try leaving this under her Youtube posts

Lawrence Lee

I think youve got it partly right, but if we think of what Yang's role has always been. She's always been the the independent woman, and she was defeated twice, badly during and leading up too the fall of Beacon. The way Blake worded it made Yang feel like Blake was saying she couldn't protect herself or otherw, and that upset Yang

Phoenix_mercury

Also "I'll protect you" could have also easily felt like "your weak now so I need to take care of you" which is simultaneously a people think Yangs weak as well as people thinking she needs to be taken care of which both absolutely gotta sting

CB Jones

I've always seen it more about partnership too. Yang's never been portrayed as needing other people to see her as strong, she doesn't talk up her abilities to others and is happy to ask for help where she needs it, both before and after her injury (for an example of someone who is sensitive about how they're percieved in RWBY see V1 Jaune). But after seeming to spend most of her childhood playing the role of Ruby's caregiver Yang's patnership with Blake is a rare bond of equality for her, and one the show emphasizes as an exceptionally close one. They don't bicker or compete, there's no insecurity or festering misunderstandings. From the moment they lock eyes in the forest they work together seamlessly, trusting, respecting and communicating with eachother. I think the idea that their dynamic as partners can't be recovered is what upsets Yang more than her ego being bruised. Someone who was concerned about another person percieving them as "strong" probably wouldn't have opened up to Blake about her trauma and fears the way Yang did.

Ryan

It appears we will have to wait.

Suplee215

Reactions in themselves aren't necessary at all. But most reactors repeat the same topics they enjoy talking about over and over.

Suplee215

This just seems like coordinating harassment at this point

EmberPanther

I agree! Yang has never seemed like someone who felt the need to prove herself or her strength to others, so in this scene I have always interpreted her reaction to Blake’s words as her feeling hurt or sad about Blake accidentally implying that their relationship isn’t equal as partners anymore! Btw, you did a very good job of explaining all of that in detail, I tried to figure out how to, but I couldn’t manage it, so thank you for taking the time to write that all out.

EmberPanther

I agree that Mosco should listen to All That Matters asap, before the end of this Volume if possible!

Suplee215

Ruby also has a anti cinder ability. Althougg its easy to not fully get how the eyes work right now, salem did say cinder is especially weak to them. How do you fight someone who can beat you with a look?

CB Jones

Ok so a detail that's easy to miss is the differance between how Blake describes Adam here to Yang vs how she described him to Sun in Vol5. Back then it she talked a little about his character but focussed on how he influenced faunus in the White Fang and twisted the purpose of the organisation, here she opens up for the first time about he hurt HER. His manipulation and abuse. It's important for 2 reasons, first is the demonstration of trust and vulnerability towards Yang (similar to Yang opening up about her mother back in Vol2), but the second is it evidencing Blake's Growth. So back in the Black trailer (yup, we're going ALL the way back!) Blake leaves Adam after he tries to get her to blow up the train while the crew (SDC employees and quite possibly faunus given their hiring policies) are still onboard. While the Adam short and her testimony show his manipulation and emotional abuse Blake actually cut ties over their ideological differences. Blake will first describe Adam as a partner before quickly correcting that to "mentor". The suggestion being that, while she used to think of him as a partner, now with the contrasting experience of her partnership with Yang she realises that her relationship with Adam wasn't built on the same equality, he held himself above her. But still she's reluctant to criticise anything other than his violence against others. Then in Vol3 she makes another step, talking about how he changed and she felt decieved when explaining why she needs Yang to look her in the eyes. While the finale lays out the ugliness of how he treated her she really doesn't talk about any of it for the next 2 Volumes. This is the first time that we see Blake admit to anyone, even herself, that she was abused. And she does it without blaming herself, something she'd defaulted to over and over previously. It's kind of easy to miss since it was obvious from an audience point of view, but it's an enormous moment for Blake's personal growth.

Wootcat

Chapter 4: I love Salem's speech to her main three minions, calling out each of their reasons for helping her: Love - Hazel's love for his sister is the source of his desire for revenge. Justice - Watt's feelings of injustice at being passed over for someone else. Reverence - Tyrian's worshiping reverence for Salem.

SauceyRed

One Thing (the song that plays during the Cinder vs Neo fight) became my instant favorite when I first watched it, I was obsessed with that song, memorized its lyrics and everything, and it's still such a banger despite not being my #1 anymore. I desperately need you and Elijah's reactions to the whole RWBY soundtrack GRAHHHH!!! (OH MY GOD if you reacted to it together that would be AWESOME)

Vince

The fact that Mercury was the first one with a foot out the door is at least a little heartbreaking when you realize it’s because he knows when to get the fuck out of the way of a violent tantrum.

Raiza Morata

I'm so happy to finally be able to watch the full version. Let's goo!!

Shaky Tail Studios

Looove these episodes. Idle note regarding Adam, he didn't fight Sienna fairly, he backstabbed her, the same way he relied on luring Yang into an ambush. V5 did still have issues no denying it (Dammit Gray), But he's much more of an ambush predator with an OP Semblance than a raw force like Cinder.

Shaky Tail Studios

Last time Blake protected Yang it involved disappearing from her life, plus its treating her like she's fragile. Oooh also did you ever see the fairy tales cause there was a Great Grimm in those that would be ideal for this farm >:3c

Vegvisir92

bad weather just happens sometimes, we in reality have huge snowstorms, i get having theories but you do seem to read really far into almost everything
