Some Simp

if i remember this is kinda a infamous episode in the fandom Mostly the song

Justin Riley

This is... probably the weakest episode of the first season. But it does have its moments. Thankfully the next one is much better and has much more to discuss.

SoaringJe

patience, my friend: this show is 9 seasons long xD

Duotail

Fun fact: The voice actor for Scootaloo is actually a good singer and apparently she wasnt very happy finding out she had to sing bad on purpose lol

Duotail

Additionally, the song had to be done twice cause the first time they actually sang too good lmao

sidney

i think the owl one is the weakest honestlyyyy

sidney

very strange to have 2 CMC episodes together.. could have swapped it with another one lol.

Isa

srsly i get so annoyed whenever i do a rewatch of the series like whyyy did they line them out like that💀

ReyOfFrost

Yeah, and unpopular opinion I love this song, reminds me of my little cousins and it's great to yell out in the car

Dániel Koltai

You'll learn it soon, but a cutie mark is more than what you're good at. It's a destiny thing. And of course they don't think their hobbies are special, to them it's natural to be good át them.

Willow 404

Yeah, this is probably one of the most frustrating episodes to watch of season 1, lol

BakaSama

How many episodes you ask? Allow me to paraphrase Dio Brando’s answer when asked a similar question: “How many breads have you eaten?”

Seraphem

Eh "Destiny" is a term that gets tossed around a lot without a clear definition of what is meant by it. Very little in the show really requires there to be any actual sort of predetermined 'destiny' as it is normally meant, and more that Ponies use 'destiny' more to simply sum up either the string of causality that led to them being where they are now, or as a note of where they want said string of causality to take them in the future.

Seraphem

Yeah, this is on the lower end, but there is one that is easily the 'worst'... even if it's still one of the better of the 'worst' eps of a season.

Seraphem

Ah this one, it has caused no end of frustration from people upset over how clearly this shows exactly what each CMC's cutie mark will be, and thus rendering, to them, any ep about them trying to find it pointless. Now... is that right? Will it be as obvious as it seems it will? Will they ever learn? You are going to have to keep watching to see that.

Lonely Pancake

Some ponies get a cutie mark in what they’re good at/what they like but others get one in like a destiny thing like the thing they’re meant to do with they’re life. This show is big on ponies destinies

Lani

Hey would u ever do more then 1 ep a week cause tho I’m hear watching in a year you’d only get 52 eps in which is like 2 seasons and there’s 9 seasons that’d take like YEARS and for engagement wise to keep a steady following thru each seasosn like if its to far apart from noir ill u like r on peak seasons 4-7 if u continue, yk idk just seems like doing 1 ep would take a while i mean I understand at this moment cause busy schedules new shows but isn’t he future would there be consideration for least 2 a week or u just gonna go with he flow of once a week and see how much mlp u do

Sydney Horton

So, pegasus baby ponies (foals) are still pegasi. They can still stand on clouds like Cloudsdale. Parents just need to worry about them getting too close to the edge and falling to their death.

Tayga Fireclaw

Our Powerpuff girls are trying there best....we will get there eventually...hihihi ,💛🤍🧡

Sydney Horton

Scootaloo is Rainbow Dash's disabled little sister, you can see her there at the end with Rarity and AppleJack. Scootaloo is the reason Rainbow Dash acts cocky and shows off. Especially after their parents died in the Rainbow Factory accident. Rainbow moved with her rainbow cloud mansion to Ponyville so her sister could be safe while she's working in the sky. They are descendants of the pony who invented rainbows. So one of their kids will always have a rainbow mane. Scootaloo took after their mom. Rainbow Dash took after their dad, Prism Flash.

Luís Pacheco

They'll be looking for their cutie marks for a while here Trying to find out how they fit in

Taigan

@19:35. The problem with being the Element of Honesty

Dayash

Welcome to the ragebaiting episodes </3

A.B.

I feel your frustrations Mosco lmao

Rixec2

Mosco: What happens if a pegasus can't fly? Wait until you learn the answer to that. Equestria's secret dark side where they take ponies to the glue factory when they have no further usage.

Jay Yusuf

sad fact: Scootaloo is unfortunately Disabled

Hazy Skies

From what I've gathered from cutie marks, they fall into 3 categories: Identity, Destiny, and Purpose. Destiny cutie marks are actually the rarest. I like viewing cutie marks from this lens, because it also helps give more insight into a pony's past, connections, and how they as an individual contribute to the world and society. Also, I agree. It should be noted that "what you're good at" is kind of a narrow perspective, and a little overused. Many ponies we know have a bunch of talents and capabilities. Take Applejack for example, she's got plenty of non-apple related talents. Rodeo, lassoing, athleticism, herding, etc. Ponies would be very two-dimensional (ironically) if they only were good at what their cutie mark is in relation to. It's good to imagine them as complex individuals in their own right; more than a mark.

morthasa

28:50 - Let's just say "Numerous" and leave it at that, ok? They *do* get progressively less painful. One of the themes of MLPFiM is that some characters need to learn the same lesson over and over, because, even if you get taught a lesson by life, actually changing the way you are is HARD.

LikeCat

Never knew that until YEARS later when I actually watched the show (when I was around 10-ish) and then realized why she was my fav out of the CMC. I am also very much so a tomboy (especially in recent years) and am disabled (not in a way you would see at first, but if you KNEW IT it is kinda visiable)... So yeah, similarities that I didn't knew about at first watch.

Jay Yusuf

I'm Disabled Also unfortunately so I see myself in her alot

Jaina Shadows

Boy is Mosco gonna be surprised when Applebloom gets a strawberry, Sweetie Belle gets a paint brush, and Scootaloo gets a chicken.

Jaina Shadows

While it's obvious that the show is hinting at the CMC's special talents in this episode, I actually like that they each tried something that wasn't their strength. Sweetie wanted to try costume and set design while Scootaloo wanted to have fun being a rockstar. Of the three, only Applebloom got a task she wasn't necessarily passionate about. Even if they don't have a natural talent for it, that doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to explore it. Also, this was a children's talent show. The Ponyville ponies were just being jerks.

Tim Sammuals

When it come to the CMC their journey is long and frustrating at time but the pay off is worth it

JHB

Applebloom's mark won't be a hammer, it'll be a wrench, after she builds Sweetie-Bot

emma resolme

Cutie Marks aren’t just what a pony’s good at. It’s what makes a pony special and different from everyone else

JHB

Remember "Five seasons of "Catra, NO!""? Welcome to "[redacted] seasons of "you adorable dumbasses"!"

JHB

All your questions shall be answered. (Seriously, the show ran nine seasons. They had to fill it with something.)

DiamondDawg

If she is going to do 2 eps it won't be for a while. She's currently juggling 4 shows (1 having 45-50 min eps) and with EOA and going to upcoming conventions (It's the reason she's only doing 1 ep of RWBY Vol 9 at a time ) Also MLP and Invincible have been very successful on the channel and Invincible won't last to long so it is likely she'll keep MLP going as long as possible as a safe consistent money maker. So yeah if she decides to just do 1 episode (with exception of 2 parters) and that's not even adding in the Holiday Special, 2017 movie, Rainbow Roadtrip and of course all the main EQG spinoff stuff (movies, pre/post movie shorts/specials) which will come alongside the main series chronologically. Even if she decides to ignore all the nonessential EQG stuff she will be on MLP for 4+ years which is a long time but it does give her a rewarding journey of being emotionally attached to the characters kinda like how most fans watched the seasons as they came out.

bo_the_fish

Do not expect the CMC to get their marks anytime soon, we've got plenty of show left lmao

Kintatsu

This is the episode where sun_tzu - who has an episode-by-episode review/affectionate parody at rpg.net - started calling the CMC the Stoopids; he would not stop for a WHILE.

Diana Alexandra Cardona Jaramillo

Yeah, not gonna lie, this is a little bit of a low episode for me. But I just hope people actually keep supporting on these kind of episodes as well. PD; After watching it again, I do actually like it more. Has some good moments.

whogivesadamn

No spoilers but they will get them before the end of the show I won't say when or how. In a future episode this season they will talk more about what it's like to get the cutie mark.

SweetCandle

Which means Michelle Creber had to do it four times, since she's the singing voice of Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle. As the show continues, you can hear as she gets more confident singing in Apple Bloom's accent.

KingofYokai

Do you actually want to know if/when they get their cutie marks?

RaisedEyebrow

This whole episode is actually foreshadowing of the Cutie Crisis Arc, where everyone in Equestria gets their cutiemarks swapped with someone else. The CMC have to are only able to save the day by sacrificing their own potential to get their marks... until they switch roles again, just as they should have done here!

Jennifer Dawes

I could be misremembering, but I think on the production side of things it actually took Scoot's VA a bit to do the song, since 'intentionally sing bad' isn't something most people practice. In future episodes Scootaloo sings just fine with the others!

Saga

Yeah, this episode is a bit rough. I would say, for your own sake, don't hold your breath for the CMC getting their Cutie Marks anytime soon. It's more of a plot device for them to go on adventures than a concrete goal. I see these episodes as little breaks from anything more serious; it might help you to do the same, to not end up frustrated? Glad you enjoyed it despite the second-hand embarrassment. :)

PWAW

I'm surprised to see people apparently hate this episode. I always found it very cute, and the song is hilarious.

Haldon Lindstrom

That is the face of someone who attended a lot of children's performances, where every note is flat, sharp or just off, and every action is as coordinated as a cat with socks on.

DeViruZz.eXe

And here we are at the infamous episode "The Show Stoppers" - or in other words: the moment where the Cutie Mark Crusaders once again throw themselves headfirst into greatness with absolute confidence, questionable planning and a spectacular inability to notice what is right in front of them. 😅 Truly one of the purest early CMC episodes imaginable. Since the start of the CMC's cutie mark crusading arc, this episode feels like one of the earliest real setups for their larger identity arc. It may not be one of Season 1's biggest, deepest or most dramatic episodes, but it is still an important one for them. It defines the CMC formula very clearly: trying way too hard to force a cutie mark instead of discovering it naturally. And with that, it also gives the Crusaders much more identity as a trio - their eagerness, childish overconfidence, chaotic teamwork and their habit of missing the obvious lesson even when it is practically glowing in front of them... What I like here is that the episode already seems to give us a glimpse of their real strengths - even if the Crusaders themselves are absolutely incapable of seeing it: Apple Bloom already shows signs of being hard-working, practical and surprisingly gifted when it comes to creative stuff, building and fixing things. You can see it in the clubhouse renovation, in the scenery and even in how she comments on Sweetie Belle's attempts at design and costume work. There is some real craftsmanship there, maybe even a sense for construction and visual design. Yet she is looking in the wrong direction and seems more drawn toward the kind of stage-talent Scootaloo might embody. Sweetie Belle on the other hoof (😉) very obviously has a natural musical side. She is the one who comes up with an idea for the song, not only by giving Scootaloo tipps on how to write and proceed further with the song, but also being a great singer herself, so that musical instinct is already there. But instead, she aspires more toward the fashion and stage-creative route, probably influenced by Rarity, even though Apple Bloom honestly seems more naturally suited for parts of that here. And at last we have Scootaloo, who is an energetic, bold, very tomboyish, a little daredevil with her scooterin her own right and clearly performance-driven. She has movement, attitude and stage energy, and could easily be the one best suited for choreography, physical performance or just carrying a show through sheer force of presence. But she wants to be the main singer, the cool rockstar center of attention - basically reaching for Sweetie Belle's lane instead resulting in a glorious "trainwreck" performance of a song. And that is what makes the episode work so well: the audience can already see their talents before they can. Even Twilight and Cheerilee seem to more or less get the picture. The solution should be obvious to everypony except the Crusaders themselves. So the whole thing works as dramatic irony: we are watching three fillies stumble right past the answer while proudly believing they are onto something brilliant... Though... will they someday get their cutie marks for something like that? Only time will tell... But I do think the episode is intentionally setting up the idea that cutie marks are not simply about doing a task once as they seem to require self-understanding. The Crusaders do show real talents here, but they do not yet recognize those talents as part of who they are. They are not just lacking skill in some areas - they still lack the maturity and self-awareness to connect their skill with their identity. And that brings us to the lesson: what someone wants to be good at and what they are actually good at may not be the same thing. - However I also would not reduce it to "don't try things you are bad at." Children absolutely should be allowed to explore random interests, even if they are not naturally gifted at them. The real point is rather that the CMC still do not understand themselves yet. They keep trying random things, failing, and then still missing the right conclusion. Which can definitely be repetitive or frustrating - but that is also part of the bigger point of their arc. And then there is the ending, which is hilarious in the most ironic way possible: they do succeed... but... not in the way they intended. Their whole disaster-performance ends up winning because it is seen as the best comedy act, and of course they instantly misread that too as a possible sign of their true destiny. 😭 And Twilight, flabbergasted, shaking her head while saying "one day..." is the most affectionate kind of disbelief, and an implied "you adorable dumbasses"-line (I'm reusing what you said here 😅) which describes exactly what we were all thinking here, while watching them charge ahead with complete confidence and absolutely no clue, knowing this disaster is inevitable but we can't help but finding them endearing anyway. And yes... what makes this episode became infamous was mostly because of that "Cutie Mark Crusaders Song" - or rather their aspired anthem - and yes, the secondhand embarassment is truly painful to watch and not just the first time around. That said, some people hate it, some find it painfully funny, and others supprisingly genuinely enjoyed it. And I kind of sit somewhere in the middle. I do not exactly love it, but I also do not dislike it either. For me it is most interesting on a metaphorical-layer: it feels like a musical reflection of the Crusaders themselves at this stage - rough, messy, unrefined, overambitious, eager and still wildly searching for their place in a huge world of possibilities. And that is not an easy undertaking. It definitely was meant to be a complete failed song... and yet it still sounds weirdly decent in some parts and some do truly like it. - And yes, it is a cringefest to the end, but also somehow memorable because of that. I also love the cheesy 80s glam-rock flavor of it all: the costumes, the posing, the overdramatic energy, and even the lighting at the start of the performance, which many compare to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" video. The whole thing is basically an intentional 80s rock-ballad pastiche. Daniel Ingram himself described it as "Cheesy 80's with 3 out of tune soloists", which honestly says it all. And the funniest part is that the song being "bad" was itself apparently difficult to pull off, because singing badly on purpose in a controlled way is not actually that easy. So the result lands in this bizarre space where it is meant to be bad, partly is bad, but still kind of works in its own cursed way. 😄 Overall, I can absolutely understand why some people see this as one of the weaker or more frustrating episodes, because on the surface it can feel like it goes nowhere. The Crusaders fail, miss the obvious lesson, and are still not really closer to their goal by the end. But honestly, I still find it fun, charming and better on a rewatch. You just have to keep in mind that these are children who are trying their best, and this show has 9 seasons to go... So a fast solution was never intended... --- Now time for some Fun-facts, thoughts and addressing your questions / observations: 0:50 The title "The Show Stoppers" plays on the term "showstopper", meaning either an especially applause-worthy performance or something that brings everything to a halt. 2:45 It's the first introduction to their new clubhouse on the Apple farm, and it's truly a hazard in the beginning. But they rebuild it really nicely and i like it. 4:20 Pegasi have the innate ability to walk on clouds (thats what was stated with the "Sonic Rainboom" episode), so fillies are able to stay on them - running off of it, might be a bigger problem... 5:10 "Trinity" was her name if i remember correctly 10:00 I love the musical background-theme here... i love how it accompanies their journey here. 13:50 Be afraid... be very afraid Spike 👀 19:40 Sometimes it's tough to be the element of honesty... 😅 but speechless is indeed right... 21:50 the second hand embarrassment is still real here... 28:10 This rage-bait of a lesson brought up by the CMC 🤣 - 28:34 That face says it all... Thanks for reacting, its great that you still enjoyed it, despite this little conundrum of multiple face-palm inducing moments during this episode! It was very enjoyful to watch!

Glitchmaster1872

The good episodes outweigh the bad ones, but there's not too many bad ones. But, yea there's still a few I skip.

Wolfie

The second hand embarrassment is real

Dániel Koltai

It's realistic. And when they do learn the lessons, they stick. My favourite part is that character development actually shows.

Joey15

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but after a 7year hiatus BronyScot, the Scottish Brony Convention, is actually back this year. Never got to go to it back in the day because it was just too expensive to get to from East England. I did get to go to BUCK, the biggest UK Brony convention, multiple times and that was loads of fun. If it's local to you might be worth a look.

Tim Sammuals

She would be at risk of so many spoilers

.

There's an important take away in this episode. Yes, they do have natural talents of their own, but they aren't passionate about those talents. As you noticed, they all didn't want to do what they are ''good at''. They had other interests.

iCommentToPlay

As Twilight said, "one day". Cutie marks is a topic that reoccurs a lot in this show! There is an episode coming soon I can't wait for you to see that focuses on cutie marks!

Warren

Even if they cant fly a Pegasus can still naturally walk on clouds, i assume when their very young their parents carry them everywhere, usually they learn to fly young

Jasmine

Time to catch up with you and Connection Through Reaction let's gooo And this is where I put my cutie mark guesses in

Jasmine

4:50 that did seem to be the case with uhh Twist

MephilesNumberOneFan

Unironically, the CMC theme song is my second favorite from the season
