So funny story about Discord. He's pretty much a full-character reference to a character from Star Trek the Next Generation called Q, and originally, the creators of My Little Pony wanted a voice actor to make a sound-alike of the actor who played Q: John De Lancie...only to them realise they could actually get the real guy on the show. So he recorded his lines for these episodes, and then completely forgot all about it...until months later when the episode actually aired, he got tons of emails talking about his role in My Little Pony, and he was very confused, so he asked his wife "Wait, what's My Little Pony?" She answered, "Oh, it's a show for little girls." "Honey...these emails...it's not little girls sending them." ...after that, he became a bit of a icon for the brony fandom, and appeared a lot in pony conventions and stuff. From everything I've heard, he's hilarious in real life.

He’s here! The King of Chaos and Trickery! DISCORD! And now you’ve met Celestia’s Ex. A being so unhinged the resident Gods (Celestial and Luna) had to just turn him into a statue to stop his nonsense. For Fan Songs, I highly recommend Lullaby for a Princess and The Moon Rises. I’m also really fond of Nightmare Night, Rainbow Factory and Awoken, but that’s just me. I’d also recommend the original Ponies the Anthology for a good laugh, but you’d have to hunt for a version that hasn’t been edited to hell and back because of YouTube. And wanting Fluttershy of all Ponies to handle Discord had me dead.

The comics are almost a separate continuity. There's some outright lore contradictions between them and the show. I think the later seasons contain a few vague comic references, but for the most part they and the show are kept firmly separate.

Mosco, meet the almighty Lord of Chaos of MLP and member of the almighty Q alien race in Star Trek, JOHN DE LANCIE! Fun fact, Discord does chaotic things by snapping his fingers and with flashes just like Q. Actually, the CMC's fight at the beginning is the only flaw of this episode. They made them fight out of nowhere just to use them as a key to free Discord. They should've use other foals in that group instead of them Fluttershy is the only one of the Mane 6 that held against Discord's lies, forcing him to corrupt her the hard way. She's also the one that goes berserk when Twi says that Discord would've win if they didn't catch RD. And after Q from Star Trek, the ending of the second part is the same as the ending of Star Wars IV

The show's budget increased for the second season, allowing more creative animation, and the writers started getting a hang of the tone they were going for the show. There will be a lot more deranged comedy and parental bonuses going forward. For instance, the ending medal-giving scene was supposed to be a reference to the Star Wars finale. And like many others have mentioned, Discord is essentially a one big reference to John DeLancie's most famous character, Q from Star Trek: The Next Generation. And although this is still an episodic show, the amount of continuity and recurring characters between episodes will be increasing, as well.

The show is only going to get more interesting from here. Next episode is one of my favorites and the one after that is a fan favorite. The show does remain very episodic, but there are small dynamic changes in each season that shake things up. Basically, while not always visible, every episode does build on events and developments of previous ones. Keep an eye out too. The themesong doen't change the lyrics any (the music changes a little) but there are more differences in the visuals as the seasons progress. Also, while it might be too deep for a reaction of a reaction, I reccomend checking out Bronies React videos on Youtube, the ones coordinated by ACRaceBest specifically (his thumbnails have spoilers though so don't go looking for him yet). He coordinated a bunch of reactor Bronies to watch the specials of the show and make some fun commentary (they even got the head writer for one of the later seasons of the show to join in for the season 5 opening two-parter). But since it would be a reactoion TO a reaction TO the show, I understand if it might not work for Patreon. Still check them out sometime in your free time (after watching the show episodes of course).

Don't let the comments here or on Youtube fool you. The writers didn't know what to do with Discord, so he only came back for one episode where he was permanently defeated. Of course, he was such a fan favorite character that the show tried to re-create the magic by having Fluttershy turn into a dreconoques (IDK if I spelled that right the creature Discord is anyway) for a season, but it just wasn't the same.

This show does adopt some story driven elements but it never abandons the episodic format. Like S1 had a through line of only 3 eps with the Gala take that just enhanced for a few of the seasons. There is a lot of continuity though and character threads so the show does reward you for watching every ep.

The Living Tombstone just remixed the song, he is still making music, he's most known in the Five Nights at Freddy's fandom these days making fan songs for that, one was even used in the FNAF movies. It's actually crazy to think about but if we're both thinking about the same episode, both the original song (2012) and the animatic (May, 2013) came out before the episode aired. The full animation by WarpOut finally came out in 2015. (god that was over a decade ago) (sorry i double checked and it wasn't Duo Cartoonist who did the animation it was WarpOut)

Eh, I definitely envision Rarity as being bi, not straight. Applejack can have two girlfriends, as a treat. For Discord, the show writers based him off of the character Q from Star Trek, played by John deLancie. Initially they were going to try and get someone who could sound like him, until someone suggested just asking John himself if he was up for voicing the character. As you can see, John agreed, and clearly had a blast voicing the pony universe's version of Q. I know everyone is suggesting that Mosco watch Lullaby, but I'd also like to suggest that Mosco watch Ponies the Anthology. Perhaps she can wait for Elijah and Morgan to finish season 1 and the Skittle Squad can have fun watching it together on a stream. It's one of the biggest and most fun bits of brony media that the fandom put out (with a new one coming out roughly at the end of every season, it's a bit more complicated than that but one per season works for the first 3 at least).

So glad you've enjoyed the Season 2 openers! One of my favorite fan-headcanon characters makes her appearance in the background for one of two appearances in the entire show: Screwball! She got nicknamed "Discord's Daughter" by some in the fandom and many many fics were created with her as a point of interest. I absolutely understand the view of Rarity as Straight. Since shipping and character interpretations are so individual I've always looked at it from the perspective of myself and some family and friends journey in discovering ourselves. We just ran with what society and media told us, that Straight was the expected and didn't really question it until later on and since Rarity is so focused on meeting societal expectations, fitting in, being what she is expected to be I've interpreted her as not really figuring out where she falls on the sexuality spectrum until later and being most comfortable expressing herself as Bisexual.

This early on MLP doesn't care too much about sharing a longer narrative HOWEVER the show is very good about continuity in a good amount of places throughout all nine seasons and between what the show says, what the creator Q&As say, the comics say, and supplemental material say all combine to create a lot of lore to chew on that can go fairly deep. If your only ever going to watch the show though then it does take a few seasons to rev up more. The introduction of Discord is definitely my and the fandom at large's favorite episodes and favorite villains, and I am ecstatic you've managed to reach this far! Because the show largely only gets better and better as it gets the time it needs to build up the world!~

Fun Fact: This is the last episode with Lauren Faust as an executive producer. If Hasbro hasn't greenlit a second season, this special was planned to be an OVA that possibly would've ended the series, which could explain why they don't try to "set up" anything here.

Maybe it’s obvious, but no reactor I’ve watched has said it so idk 😭
