Ruby: good 4 you, im happy you're healthy, not me, if you ever care to ask.

Adrian ruiz martinez

the thing that Hurts the most is that more that anyone else in her group, beside yang, jaune is the person ruby is the closest to.

Symbolic Remnant

“Alright, Happy Fourth of July: which means THAT month is over, Yang! It’s time to pack up all the lovey-dovey stuff with that smut-reading trash panda and help me get us out of here and into some place I can go back to pretending I don’t notice. …For goodness sake Yang, it really is an embarrassment to the family! Didn’t you pay attention in Ozma School? Those sorts of urges are a temptation from Salem! It’s the Two Brothers, not the Two Lovers!” - !Ruby Rose, Homophobic Asexual Yeah… what started as the RWBY fandom’s crossover with the Arcane Fandom bringing up the “Homophobic Jinx” meme got VERY out of hand VERY quickly after Ruby dropped that “We’re all SO HAPPY for you!” The creative ones are actually very funny… but it was quickly overwhelmed by those who just wanted to write slurs on a RWBY screenshot.

Robert Hunter

Mosco, that jump scare was payback for what you did to Elijah during you guys reaction to "Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared!" LOL

Robert Hunter

Also, brace yourself for the next episodes. Not joking, this will hard for you to watch.

Etheriell

I'm really glad you picked up on the fact that the problem was less anybody making bad decisions so much as just a bad situation. A lot of the fandom were really ragging on WBY but everybody was forgetting a number of things. For one, they're still also teenagers. They're only 19. I've never met a 19-year-old who knew how to deal with mental issues. For two, all of these disasters happened to all of them. It wasn't just Ruby. And it all happened over the course of like 3 days total when everything went wrong. Sure, Jaune's had a long time to think about it, but as he pointed out, he was alone! And everyone knows that fucks with you too lol. It's not that WBY did wrong, we have a perfect view as the audience. We have a much better view and mindset of everything going on. We get to dig in and review and pause and think about how we would handle it! And yet we wouldn't. The vast majority of people would not know what they're doing and wouldn't do it right to be perfectly honest. Especially at that age. They did ask her a couple times If she was okay, and she straight up lied to their face. Or dismissed it. Or just ignored it. Which I don't blame her for either, she was going through it. But for any who actually has been depressed, in that state, you don't want help. And you will push people away, which is exactly what Ruby did. As you put it Mosco... It was bad timing. It was bad everything lol. Everything was wrong, everyone was messed up, nobody knows what to do, and that's honestly what I love about this part and this season is that it feels real to me. Because nobody makes good choices here and yet it's completely understandable why. If you pause and stop looking at it from the viewpoint of being the omnipotent viewer who knows what's going on, you realize this is very real. It's why I don't blame a single person there. Everybody was messed up, nobody knew what to do, and everything went wrong. And that is perfectly reasonable in that situation. Ruby is my favorite character and I am a sucker for characters having a PTSD crash out so that they can be helped to build back up. I'm looking forward to the reactions for the next few xD

LaviPastelQueen

Here we go one of my fav episodes for reasons 😬

Faroth

Now you see why we told you we were 'sooo happy' that you were in v9

Suplee215

In my opinion the Adam vs Blake x Yang fight was a way to metaphorically show that the 2 worked through theirnissues and talked about it. The line abiut them being there for each other and not doing it alone really settles it in my mind. Although yang might still have abandonment issues in general feeling like if she speaks any relationship itll happen again

morthasa

In other news: Not-So-Average-Fangirl channel closing down due to her having caught a random Highland cow to the face. With no witnesses.

Hi-Viz

People were just more interested in spreading the nonsense "urmagud Yang doesn't care about Ruby" than actually engaging with what the show is showing them

Faroth

The thing ruby had by saying she was 'sooo happy for them' is that nobody there seems to realize she was bad, they just assumed she was doing bad but nobody really ask her or really sit down with her to talk, as she said, she is the leader, and as said in v1, she will keep doing the role of leader regardless of her mental and emotional health until someone on the team do something about it, but none of them do actually something, all were bad, but ruby havent stop hurting since beacon and nobody did sh1t about it, except for the few weeks in atlas when PENNY did something about it and make her happy, you know, PENNY, her revived friend who was once again killed, this time as a human who get to hug her and that they enjoyed weeks together growing a feeling that would most likely be something more than friendship but the two were too naive and pure to understand yet and now it doesnt matter because penny is dead and ruby is hurting all that and the team just went "oh, yeah, we are all bad, lets go" and forget that she was 16 when all this started (the tournament), now like 17ish and still nobody cared about her mental and emotional health until she exploded... she is indeed just a child and needs help, even if she overcomes this part, she still will need serious help, specially for the feelings about penny... and jaune need help too... Even if physically and mentally is like 60ish

Phoenix_mercury

Yeah this whole thing is just a perfect storm of everything exploding at once and no time to breathe or think or process or well... Anything

morthasa

No, it's not just you. The naming of the Pleasers is indeed adorable (and completely justifiable on grounds of crippling loneliness even if it wasn't)

Adrian ruiz martinez

Ruby is a protagonist that wants to be a supporting character, and jaune is a supporting character that wants desperately to be a protagonist

Ryan

Connor Hines

She’s going to need Hamish and Elijah for the next episode, it’s going to be rough

Taigan

Buckle up. It’s a rough ride from here to the finale.

futureguy51

One thing I've noticed on rewatches is how much of Ruby's issues are hinted at throughout the entire show, but especially in the first volume. If you go back and watch her conversations with Ozpin and Jaune in the first volume about leadership, you can see her unhealthy view of shouldering everyone's burdens, how a leader can't fail, and how a leader always has to be everyone else's rock begin to form and take shape. On first watch it always seems great and shows how Ruby is growing as a leader, but when viewed through the lens of what she goes through throughout the show and the past few episodes, it takes on a much darker tone.

7Wolfmoon

Maybe, maybe not—so far she’s been doing well emotionally, but that could change in these final episodes.

bloodyshadow1

also every time they tried to ask her if she was okay or what's wrong they're interrupted. It sucks but everyone was dealing with the fallout and being trapped in a fantasy world

Enchanted_Echo

As you can tell from this episode and the topics being tackled as for the next one, watch ONLY if you're in a good head space because "This Episode contains themes of Death that'll be sensitive for some viewers. View discretion is advised." (this would normally appear at the start of the episode like this one but I don't think you will have it)

Rupert Anderson Jr

I've lost count of the number of times I've watched the crash out scene between Ruby and Jaune and I still tear up at it. The VA performance is incredible. In a sense this was a perfect shit storm. Ruby's burden as a leader finally reached its breaking point, while the rest of the team worked through their own issues and their faith in Ruby led them to believe that she would do the same, which essentially created a blind spot because Ruby was always there to be positive and hold everyone up, so much that the rest of the team took that for granted without realizing it. As for Jaune, he has been alone for what I presume to be decades, and in that time all he could do was think about was his failures, regrets, and guilt. Which understandably explains his desperation to protect the paper pleasers. To actually save lives after having lost so much. Your mental health is your responsibility, but having a support system goes a long way to recovery. Without it, there's only so much one person can do on their own

BGTitan

Dont know if she's already recorded the next episode but I hope the mods gave her all the trigger warnings! Cuz next episode is.... oh boy. So, while listening to the commentary, they mentioned that they spent a lot of time trying to figure out what Jaune would have been doing during all those years waiting for RWBY after his journey with Alyx ended. Apparently, the meeting went something like: “Well, he can’t have been doing nothing, that would be really disappointing.” *Beat of silence* “Oh, that would be really disappointing.” Evil geniuses. It’s such a complicated thing. Because every time they did try to ask “hey, you good” Ruby shut them out or something interrupted them. That’s not even taking into consideration that they’re all so focused on trying to leave the Ever After. It’s all just a really big mess. Ruby’s completely valid in her feelings, this has been building for such a long time, but it’s still so hard to see her yelling at her team. And Jaune… oh boy. That’s another messy issue. This dude has always had a hero complex, like Ruby in some ways. “I’m tired of being the idiot stuck in the tree, I want to be the hero” to paraphrase his speech in V1. But now, mixed with all his trauma, it’s gotten to a point where he’s interfering with the Afterans’ way of life based on incomplete information and his own assumptions/biases. Miles and Lindsey killed it this episode though, holy shit. Another thing, Blake has kind of been the one stepping into the leader role this volume, trying to keep everyone's spirits up. She's been trying to emulate Ruby, calling back to their conversation last volume about how she's always admired Ruby. So to have Ruby shut her down and tell her to 'shut up' when she's trying to do this... it's a rough one too. On the plus side… the Bees are more in sync than ever and that fight choreo was super smooth. So there’s that silver lining.

bloodyshadow1

i mean they did check in with Ruby, Yang has multiple times. They've always been interrupted every time though. It's not fair, but WBY did try to check on Ruby, but it's been 3 days or so, Ruby also needed to speak up. It's a tragedy because if they had time to talk things would have been better, or at least they could have been mentally more healthy, but they didn't have the chance

Moonas

Tbf Ruby didn't said anything that bad to said "I hate how she speaks to Y&B" she literally said "U are so blinded by your happiness that u can't see me suffering" and that's valid - brutal but valid. Yang was always promising Ruby to be there for her and when she needed her the most she doesn't saw it, standing right beside her. Even Little who know Ruby 3 days saw that something is off. Ozpin said Ruby that she need to be strong to give her team reason to follow her, and she was - always. To the last moment she didn't tell them that she need help, she tried to be perfect leader that Oz tell her to be, just like her mom. So this crash out was valid but wasn't that brutal.

Ann_Temki

Ruby’s crashout has truly been building since she first ended up on the Beacon airship

Christopher Pope

The summer I taught English in Xinjiang, China, my college-age students wanted English names to go by in class. So I had them pick from a list of first names of friends I knew in America. Neat thing is, the names on the class photo are a representation of the people who were on my mind at that time. So in that way, I identify with Jaune here.

Zirkumflex

Ruby has been bottling up those feelings since the Fall of Beacon and has never worked through them. With the loss of Penny and everything in the Everafter she finally exploded.

Christopher Pinon

Thing I appreciate this part it’s hard to watch is that the ones that are crashing out are leaders of the team. They are carrying these burdens for so long and it reaches a breaking point

TheRavenWanderer

Not sure if it's been suggested already, but once you're done with the volume which would be quite a ride, you and Elijah could do some sort of a bonus vid watching Ep 6 together in a joint reaction of sorts. Something like what Arryn and Barbs did.

Angelus Lupus

Another reaction where Mosco's analysis and predictions of the plot make me excited for what we'll get in The Elves of Amaranth

SunlightM8y

Just so you know if you read this, but when the next episode aired on Crunchyroll, it was the only episode to have a trigger warning, and the way you are watching it I dont think it will show up. Just making you aware of it, love the reactions so far.

Ann_Temki

Something I’d like to point out is that since they got here, at basically EVERY turn Ruby is forcefully dragged away from her own feelings- by finding Little, by finding her team, by finding out where they are, by the rowdy market, the prince guards, the cat, her team shrinking, the herbalist, the jabberwalker attack(twice), Jaune, the storm, and finally the Paper Pleasers danger. It’s really depressing upon rewatch that after keeping her own problems to herself since the start that when they FINALLY get to a place to be alone with their thoughts- Ruby is *still* forced into the leadership role to help everyone else….

Fay

Oof the crashout episode. I do think that Blake just unconsciously going for Yang’s metal arm is genuine and is just doing it for comfort. I think they cover that issue more than her abandonment issues in Vol.6. I do hope they touch more on Yang’s abandonment issues in later volumes. I do feel for all of them that they been through so much and they are all still so young.

Martin E Melcher

There may be a need for a crisis line post in the next episodes

Robert Morgan

Ruby not showing outward signs of her struggles reminds me of the advice she gave Jaune way back at Beacon. About how he was a leader now and couldn't afford to fail. She's hiding it because she feels if she isn't 'strong' for her friends that she's failed as a leader.

RetroBeastto

[Edit] Yeah Jaune is having hero guilt. Not being able to save Penny, Pyrah, and in a way not being the hero in Alyx’s story as well. And yeah Ruby is also going through it as well. Plan after plan failing and just being at an all time low. These characters are in desperate need of a hug. Also be ready for the next episode cuz trigger warning. It hit me really really hard

DiamondDawg

IDK if I want WhiteKnight. I guess it depends on how it's written forward but the fact that the first we see Weiss show interest is seeing him when he's older IDK that doesn't sit well with me. Kind of a problematic foundation to set up these 2 maybe getting together. I would rather have shown Weiss acknowledge how mature he's gotten before V9. Would make that scene less weird.

Jyoster

Oh boy... This episode... The one that greatly divided the FNDM, and the one of the ones responsible for the current situation within my friend group... Oh hey, Elijah cameo! That got a chuckle out of me, I often unintentionally spook others without warning, so I can relate. I certainly would feel honored to have my name be given to one of the Paper Pleasers. The girls are focusing too much on the oddity of the act to realize the emotional implication of the naming. Given Ruby's mindset before getting cut off [again], it's clear she wasn't going to say something good. Probably along the lines of say... Letting the tree claim then, under the impression that it did kill. And oh boy... Ruby's crash out... It's very hard to see, even now. But unlike how others feel about it, I feel it was necessary to happen. Because as things were, she wasn't going to ask for help, nor would anyone noticed just how deep Ruby's depression was. And whenever they did notice something was up, something kept interrupting them. Sigh... Rewatching this episode made me remember how I can't openly talk about it and the rest of Volume 9 with my friends anymore, since it's such a dividing topic. Some say Ruby is in the right, others say Jaune is in the right, and some saying this and the entirety of Volume 9 should've never happened to begin with. But I am glad you're enjoying watching, through the highs and lows. Prepare yourself for next time though, all I'll say is that its the one episode that permanently divided the FNDM beyond repair.

Anime Kid67

I don’t know if you noticed but at the end of chapter 2 when ruby stop crying she started to become a little bit more anxious and more depressed bit by bit and then this happened and she went off on everyone cuz every single time she tried to talk about how she felt things kept getting in the way until she just snapped and she just attacked everyone and I stand on this hill she was justified in going off on everyone here cuz she just needed to get all of her feelings out so yeah she is 100% justified and going off on them and I’m going to say this now next episode is going to really hurt maybe get so tissues

SauceyRed

LET'S FUCKING GOOOO! One of my favorite episodes, the Ruby breakdown and the whole thing with her and Jaune, and god the voice acting, all so peak! (Also this is the first non-YouTube video I'm watching since I moved city yesterday)

James Pagel

15 when it started and 16ish now

Mare

There were at least 4 times Yang noticed and asked Ruby if she was okay but Ruby deflected, changed the subject or completely ignored her. Or other times something suddenly happened that diverted their attention. And it started from the second episode when yang asked Ruby if she was okay but Ruby started talking about Neo being in the Ever After.

Mare

Ugh, yeah I already found a comment saying that her team (and essentially Yang) ignored her. When in the second episode Yang already asked if she was okay but Ruby deflected and the next few times after that. I hate this revisionist history that they keep bringing up.

Mare

Yang checked up on Ruby a few times during this volume but Ruby either changed the subject (like in ep2), flat out ignored Yang in ep4 or just got distracted by things always happening (this episode). Thing is that 19 year olds aren’t always going to laser focus on things when teens in general are still trying to navigate and process their own feelings about life. And then we have Ozpin pushing the whole “Being a team leader isn't just a title you carry into battle, but a badge you wear constantly. If you are not always performing at your absolute best, then what reason do you give others to follow you?” Ozpin had good intentions but his advice isn’t always great. Coco in the novel “After the Fall” also gave her this similar advice which pretty much comes from Ozpin as this is what he tells his students. You know the saying, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions.” So that advice to naive 15 year olds that saw the world through sheltered eyes , were the seeds that sent Ruby down this path.

Jonathan Morgan

Yang and Blake are past the point of needing to sit down and explicitly talk about Blake leaving. Yang's convo with Weiss helped her internalize Blake had her own trauma response reason for leaving and their arc in V6 is all about Blake reaffirming that she's not running and leaving Yang alone again.

Paper and Dice

I do like that Ruby's crash out in this episode is kind of ugly. It's valid and fair, but the things she says are mean, are even kind of cruel at times, because she's hurting so badly she can't hold it back. It wasn't nice, she said some things that were actually unfair or in a calmer state would be unwarranted. It feels more like a real emotional collapse because of those things, and it makes it all harder because she's not just saying true things in an angry voice, she's actively trying to make her teammates and sister feel bad. She just feels so awful herself she can't handle it all, and is actively lashing out to hurt others as well to try and get some of it out.

Mikayla Welker

my biggest thing about this "sort out our feelings line" is yeah, i as a fan love they did, but that was just such a representation of "dont worry ruby will figure it out." they were separated during the ponderstorm, just trusting ruby to figure it out while they could take that time to sort out their feelings because they knew the decision wasnt on them. It was only last volume that yang told ruby she made a bunch of mistakes as a leader and that she didnt want to follow her any more, and now, during a crucial "who to trust" crossroads, they both left her to figure it out, with ruby feeling like if she makes more mistakes, theres gonna be another point yang leaves her. And it was only last volume blake said she looked up to her, which at the time was really comforting, but more weight to her shoulders. Ruby has been drowning since volume 3 and has not had time to rest, has had to be the leader since volume 6, and has not given herself time to grieve because of that "put your team first" line ozpin get her in volume one. that line is harsh and mean, but its the fact that she has so clearly needed help and their romantic feelings were something they made time for, but there was no time for her i also wanna be clear, no hate to the characters at all and i love the writing to this scene, her team made a mistake and took her for granted, and ruby didnt communicate before she at her limit.

Faroth

James, she started 15, went a full schoolyear since the tournament was after the 1st year, at the end of that year, waited like 2 months to start traveling to haven and traveled for almost 2 months there, waited a few more weeks to travel to atlas which took a few more weeks, then in atlas they stayed like 2 more months, so ... Make the math, she is like 17 now and the others like 19

Faroth

Mare, for people in grief and depression being asked "are you ok" is very easy to just say "yes" and deflect to avoid "making bigger the mess", that by itself as i said isnt the same that actually make her see that they care, they needed to sit down with her and actually talk to her as they kinda started when she came back and said noce things about her... They needed to openly said that they know she is not ok otherwise the person in auestion usually wont take in consideration its own mental health until they explode as she did and they keep hurting u tilthey are said that they are in a bad situation, as weirdly enough, Neo did, Neo literally put her phantoms in front of her to make her see all her problems and why she was suffering so much mentally and emotionally, but of course was to make her suffer more, in normal healthy waysthey should actually do something like that, confront her with all that stuff but then assure that they are there for her and stayed with her and be therd all the time she needed to at least pass the harder time,a few moments were ideal for that, like in jaune house the night before, but they were so concentrated on their new relationship that they didnt notice her actual reaction to her weapon, which is why she also exploded against their relationship, because she is 'so happy for them' which can translate to 'thanks for noticing that im in pain' and as i said, asking just "are you ok' is usually really easy avoided with "yeah" and keep talking about other stuff, they need to be confronted or they wont stop defelcting until they explode as she did whichusually cause more pain in them and in others

Arashi

"Today we are reacting to... the death of my girlfriend. Hold on a sec." Ruby's 'mission prep/mission first' outlook helped her get through Volume 4-6. Downside of the outlook, she never really got to process Volume 3 like the other girls did. A downside that compounded during Atlas. Now here in the Ever After, Ruby has overburdened herself, forced into a back-line role without her weapon and her only 'goal' is to go right back into the fire. Not helping that the other girls aren't noticing her hesitation and zone-outs until it blows up on them. Blake and Yang should certainly have a talk about themselves since their now actively more then friends, while I think Yang's talks with Weiss in Volume 6 helped settle a lot of Yang's issues, there's a bit of a difference between girlfriend and friend, even if it was a 'friend you blatantly flirt with/at'. Then there's Jaune... oh god there's Jaune. Already having Imposter Syndrome from Volume 1 and then finding he's actually going to be the Rusted Knight.... and then how his trip with Alyx ended... being the only human in the realm for decades.... Vomit Boy grew to become Trauma Man. I'm pretty sure Neo's Semblance in this is a mix of having evolved and how it interacts with the nature of the Ever After itself.

CrowOfAFeather

Neo's Semblance has always been physical. This time around she can make multiple things and people, with their voices as we see with the Jabberwalker (which is 100% dead due to Neo). Emerald's was illusions, but Neo's was always physical. The fight between Ruby and Jaune is so well-written because it's not a "one side is wrong and the other is right". And yeah, poor Ruby really needed to talk it out, but every opportunity was interrupted or brushed off despite what people with zero media literacy skills try to claim ("duuh yang is such a bad sister so she can't be with blake" etc.) Very curious about your reaction for the next episode...and, well, the rest as well. For several reasons.

Kriscerosaurus

Gaah! Hugs! Everyone needs hugs forever in this show! God, I remember so many people being up in arms about Yang interposing herself between Ruby and Blake, but like…who better to recognize you might need to be physically stopped during an episode than your sibling? I love my brother to death, but I know him well enough to read his emotions when they elevate, and if he was advancing on someone I cared about during a breakdown like that I’d absolutely be ready to intervene, and I’d hope he’d do the same to me. The FNDM just…baffles me sometimes. Maybe it’s an age thing, I dunno. Everyone’s got different life experiences, and RWBY has this weird way of shining a light on them. ❤️🤍🖤💛

Wilhelm Hedin

And ruby is what, 2 years younger than the others?

CheetsAC7

Seconding this. Even in just Volume 9 thus far, everyone has tried to see if Ruby is okay, but Ruby either changes the subject or just ignores it. It's only been the last two episodes that we even see Ruby getting close to being open to discussing it, only to get cut off by Jaune or something else happening. Frustrating for sure, but definitely not WBY's fault.

Adam Devine

I know you want to keep it one episode per week but I highly recommend watching episodes 9 and 10 back to back. Also they just announced that Volume 10 is greenlit.

Jittercritter

This episode made me feel physically sick 😭

Alex Welford

This may be too late depending on when she records this, but should we give her a trigger warning for the next episode?

Mare

Faroth, The one thing they focused on when they regrouped in a new land was making a priority to "get out" of it. They made that their mission. If you're in a strange new land, things tend to go under the radar unfortunately. We as the audience can pick this up and we are meant to. But the rest of the Team and Jaune don't have the same omniscience as the audience does because things enfold in front of us. Camera zooms for us as we are presented with details that WBY+J won't pick up on. They learn AFTER the fact. Miles said in the Volume 9 Director's Commentary for Episode 7: [Miles says, Ruby has always been the one that never falters, that others take it for granted that she’s going to be okay. With all these other things going wrong, Weiss, Blake and Yang are focusing on those because they’re used to Ruby being okay. Making that assumption leads to Ruby feeling more isolated and not very supported.] With that said, Yang has seen Ruby upset but not like THIS. To her, how Ruby was currently acting when she unleashed her anger, it was completely foreign to her. In other words, Ruby did exactly what Taiyang would do which is keep it to herself or not make a big issue of it. Ruby did the same with Yang and with Yang's own frustration (both Pre-Beacon, During-Beacon and Post-Beacon.) Let's face it, the Xiao Long-Rose Family couldn't detect anything with each other that's extremely out of the ordinary because they all have their doctorates in Masking their true emotions. (This extends to the rest of the team as well and we see this in the first Arc) And we know about the trademark "Xiao Long School of Compartmentalizing" because it came from their father who never Opened up about his own trauma. Burnie Burns (P.92 of the World of RWBY), "He doesn't spend a lot of time talking about his emotions, but he’s been through alot. I think about men who went to war and experienced horrible things, but when they came back to support their families they never spoke a word about it. They took all that to the grave.” Basically both Ruby and Yang picked up on this and applied it to their own lives. Ruby didn't notice ANY of Yang's issues as well. In fact Ruby also abandoned Yang. Yes, she left to go on a mission but she didn't bother trying to bring Yang along with her because it she didn't KNOW how to talk to her or help her and she didn't know it was THAT serious. Vice Versa with Yang in THIS episode. And like Miles said, they were focusing on the things that were going wrong. The VISIBLE things. World of RWBY p.55 - ["Ruby’s optimism is refreshing in a world beset by monsters and dark sorcery. “Because there’s so much negativity, she feels she has to be this pillar of positivity,” says Jones. “It’s selfless, but that means that she’s not dealing with her own issues. Compartmentalizing and internalizing her grief is what might eventually destroy her."] - NOTE: Keep in mind that this Companion Guide was written BEFORE the Atlas Arc was finished being produced. "they needed to sit down with her and actually talk to her as they kinda started when she came back and said noce things about her." - Faroth Yes in an ideal situation when they're not bombarded with stuff happening in this strange new land as well as the War in Remnant, then yes, they needed to sit down and talk. But they didn't have that luxury back in Remnant AND also in this pocket dimension. Also traditionally Confrontation Backfires...Depression already causes intense feelings of worthlessness and shame so if they feel pressured in any way, people usually retreat within themselves even more. Confrontation is usually counterproductive when helping someone with depression because it triggers a defensive fight-or-flight response, deepens feelings of shame , and reinforces social withdrawal. And Yang isn't aggressive when it comes to that with her own family. Her own father wasn't aggressive with helping Yang in her early days of recovering in Patch. After Yang has a PTSD episode and drops a glass, Tai just watches it enfold, then walks away. So not exactly the best role model there. no one even confronted Qrow with his drinking problem early on until it actually became a problem in Volume 6. The family is a Remnant version of a Greek Tragedy. Yang had this problem with Over-coddling in the beginning (it's better explained in Ice Queendom and Tai calls her out on it) and struggled to find the right balance of letting Ruby spread her wings but also STILL be her emotional support. Why? Because she was an adolescent attempting to take on a role that an adult parental figure usually takes on. And still in her teens, she's not really going to know what to do since she's never actually been given complete guidelines in how to parent someone. Summer didn't stay long enough to teach her those things. So she did the best she could and she's the "Learn as you go" kind of support. Well, Ruby's own breakdown can be considered a learning lesson from this since it's never happened before. And she never expected it. She considered Ruby stronger than herself. I'd say more about this but Mosco hasn't finished V9 and she hasn't even been aware of the V9 Beyond episodes. So yeah, Yang and Ruby didn't have the best role models, so whatever version of familial interactions they learned, they got it from a disbanded team that didn't even know how to communicate with each other. And that is partly why they're screwed up in the head. Both are victims of their own environment. However, the plus side is that THIS all took place in Act 2. Not in Act 3. we're not there yet. Act 2 is where characters go through the grind in their development journeys. From a storytelling perspective, they are going to show flaws left and right, but they'll eventually learn when that time comes. Because that is what typically happens in every Act 2 scenario.

And thus the good ship Lancaster sank beneath the waves.... I've always thought in saner times Ruby would consider dating Jaune; he used to be able to make her laugh and feel comfortable. They've had moments of genuine tenderness before, which is why this scene hurts so much.

John J Ronald

Jaune's list is pretty funny....I'm glad Mosco took the time to read through it line by line.

John J Ronald

I like that Jaune's role in the village is a soft commentary on "white savior" narratives and he exhibits a superior colonizer attitude towards the PP villagers whom he infantilizes.

John J Ronald

I think some of Ruby's hostility towards Yang/Blake is driven by her grief over losing Penny whom she (slowly) realizes she may have LOVE loved.

John J Ronald

Yeah it also hurts because Blake has ALWAYS supported Ruby, always taken her side. Her talk with Ruby in Vol.8 was utterly sincere.

John J Ronald

Ozpin's advice to Ruby contributed to this; My half-Japanese girlfriend commented at the time "well, you can tell an Asian person (Monty) wrote that...."

John J Ronald

The drug scene in the Caterpillar's home shows that Ruby can be her own worst enemy. Her youthful doppelganger is a faithful recreation of her Vol.1-2 self but sounds so cruel in the present context. War is hell. And Ruby doesn't have great coping mechanisms (yet). Leadership can be a lonely job...but it doesn't have to be.

John J Ronald

Good on Mosco for noticing Weiss & Jaune make good combat partners against the Jabberwalkers. Very much in sync and got each other's backs.

I kind of assumed that the Yang and Blake conversation started in Volume 6 at Brunswick Farms. Specifically when Blake verbally mis-steps and tells Yang she'll "protect her." For obvious reasons (one might say "Apathetic" even), that conversation gets cut short, and plot resumes. Then there was Argus, then Adam, and then getting to Atlas. My assumption is that conversation happened during the glow-up montage if them training and doing odd jobs, especially since that leads into them going dancing together. But yeah, like you, I DO want to see that conversation when it isn't getting interupted by plot. And I THINK it can still happen even at this stage, because you can love someone, BE in love with someone, and still have unresolved issues. We're just used to the nice clean fairytale order of emotional operations for cleaner storytelling. And we both know RWBY is no fairytale...

CB Jones

I know there's more serious things going on, but I do want to point out that Jaune knew for years that RWBY were going to show up and planned on them to stay in the village for however long it took for him to find a way out. AND HE DIDN'T THINK TO BUILD THEM A SPARE ROOM?! He didn't even have beds for them! I don't blame the guy for his crash out but I do think he dropped the ball on being a good host.

CB Jones

Yeah, I think there's no explicit scene where they talk it out because it wouldn't really add much that isn't demonstrated elsewhere in the series. It'd just be a re-run of Yang & Weiss' conversation in Alone Together with Blake looking sad instead. Blake's words during the fight with Adam, her adding a gold line across her sword (in a world where colours are THIS significant), her opening up about ther doubts and fears to Yang in Vol7, these are the things that demonstrate that she understands how she hurt Yang and what she needs to do to reassure her.

Phoenix_mercury

Yeah, I don't want it🤷 sits icky for me, like early on Weiss is adamantly against him then later on after he's don't a bunch of stuff he gets her? Gives very "do enough work and your reward is you get the girl that didn't want you before" vibes... it reduces Weiss to a prize(regardless of whether people wanna admit it), Her entire role in that ship becomes validating Jaune’s old feelings from years ago. It turns her from a character with her own journey into the reward waiting at the finish line for him. And the whole chemistry thing is 🤦 Weiss does one kinda flirty comment once and people are all over it, meanwhile Ruby and Weiss have years of partnership, conflict, trust-building, emotional support, shared leadership struggles, mutual respect, and some of the most important character interactions in the entire show. But sure. Clearly Weiss saying “You look mature” is the real romantic jackpot... Sorry, can you tell some of the hardcover WK shippers get on my nerves lol

Another thing I want to point out about Ruby crashing out at Blake and Yang specifically that I feel like doesn't get brought up a lot- Ruby just lost Penny for the SECOND time and this time it's permanent. Whether you ship Nuts and Dolts or not, Penny was clearly Ruby's most special person outside of her family and team. So not only is Ruby coping with that huge loss, but to see in the wake of that loss 2 people, even 2 people she cares a lot about, deepen their relationship and be happy has to sting that much more. Again, it all comes back to what you were saying about it all being just bad timing and shitty circumstances. And if Blake and Yang had gotten together at ANY OTHER TIME Ruby would've been happy for them. But she's so deep in the depression and grief she can't be. Was it right for her to yell at them? No. Was it understandable and very realistic? Absolutely. When you hate yourself so deeply you can't fully be there for anyone, even people you love. And Ruby has been slowly heading for this point from the beginning. As you said, this crash out was a long time coming. Now to see how they all move forward now that it's all in the open.

Cinder's Apologist

I've long assumed that any convo between Blake and Yang happened off screen, likely sometime during v6. just too many narrative things to juggle; plus actions speak louder than words, and Blake has demonstrated plenty to convince Yang that things have changed for the better. hehe cute Bmblb gf moments gonna be canon now :3 oh Jaune isn't just feeling guilt over Pyrrha's death. remember what happened to Penny at the end of the last volume? not to mention the various times since the Fall of Beacon that Jaune had to witness people getting hurt or dying and he (along with the others) wasn't able to stop it. the fall of Atlas especially weighs on him, as it does for all of them - they swore to protect people and right now, it feels like they couldn't do that.

Cinder's Apologist

yeah, this crash-out was a long time coming. especially for Ruby, but also for Jaune to a somewhat lesser extent. this episode is so good in that regard; the timing is awful for them, but narrative wise it's so delicious. (side note: when you rewatch RWBY, pay close attention to v1 when Ruby gives her little pep talk to Jaune about being a team leader. that moment comes full circle here in this crash-out for both of them.) while I did not fully anticipate this sort of crash for Ruby, it quickly became evident that it needed to happen. and the more I rewatch, the more obvious it had to for reasons I can't fully get into yet - but also because those reasons are many lol

Fun opening! I disagree on White Knight, compare it to Renora or Bumbleby & I just don't see anything resembling the same degree of build up. As to Blake & Yang discussing it, I feel like their confrontation with Adam kind of covered all that myself. Good eye regarding Ruby having initially instinctively gone to Crescent Rose but now that she's kind of gotten use to that helplessness and her anxiety is so much worse the prospect of picking it back up again is proving too much to handle, very good eye. Though I'd note while a pillar of support often she wasn't exactly there for Yang post V3, which Ruby herself acknowledged and Yang didn't hold against her, I just felt the need to note it. I think its both cute, like the paper pleasers themselves, but also very much a sign of Jaune not coping well with the isolation. I love the various Acre names and litany of disasters, the fact they can have so many disasters but also build things so well really shows how intentional these things are. The Paper Pleasers also not begrudging Jaune is very interesting but makes sense given to them he is just fulfilling his purpose, it just happens to run contrary to their desires. I love Little, so cute & yeah, the big difference is that Jaune is extremely loud about not doing well even when he's trying to be OK, while Ruby is very quiet and has so far been dismissing efforts to reach out to her so its kind of easy to ignore/put off. Love the story book flashbacks so much. Also fascinating how Ozpin &Ironwood like Jaune becomes when he is not doing well psychologically speaking. I legit have to wonder if Remnant has no concept of reincarnation given how they talk about ascension. I know a DC comic alludes to the idea but (Waves hand vaguely) There's this great meme from V9 with Blake as a civil rights activist and the Afterans being confused but thankful for her advocation for their agency XD "Because I can actually save these people" he still has that toxic hero mindset. Bumbleby have such perfect combat synergy! Yang's Semblance seemingly evolving is very cool, good eye! Someone made a great note awhile ago that Weiss more than the others picked up on Ruby being upset but misdiagnosed it as Ruby feeling like they didn't trust her anymore, and so hurt being like "Right Ruby?" was an effort to show trust but just makes Ruby feel more isolated. It hurts so baaaaaad! Aside but both Weiss & Blake as victims of abuse dealing with Ruby shouting at them 100% brought back some bad memories, especially with how their body language shifted. I disagree Yang didn't take care of Ruby she kept trying but kept being dismissed. Low key I also get why Ruby was angry about the Paper Pleasers cause Jaune was treating them less like friends than they were just tools for a coping mechanism for himself. Gods that ending hurts, but hey you predicted the crash out, kudos!

Shaky Tail Studios

This, Yang and others DID check in on Ruby but either got interrupted or Ruby brushed them off. They couldn't exactly hold her down and demand she tell them what was wrong.

Shaky Tail Studios

Legit a genius move there, having Jaune stuck in arrested development so he learned nothing and progressed nothing and that being a commentary was inspired!

Shaky Tail Studios

Exactly, there were multiple check-ins, disruptions and rejections. WBY couldn't just grab Ruby and hold her down until she told them what was wrong, especially in what to them is a disaster scenario where they still need to get back to Vacuo and help with the refugees etc. People h have unrealistic demands of them.

BGTitan

Right? I heard that in the commentary and was just like "I hate how smart that was."

Jittercritter

20:49 “(Ruby will help)” If you look in the background there’s clearly more than one red one, which means he specifically named the one that helps him with his duties after Ruby 🥹

Jittercritter

Jaune’s biggest flaw in this volume is that he’s way too obsessed with the idea of being a hero in a world that doesn’t need one, and Ruby’s biggest flaw is that she’s convinced herself that she’s already failed at being a hero when she’s actively trying to return to a world that DOES. Very interesting problems to give the team leads.

marnacles

Ruby’s crash out is 1000% deserved and also one of my favorite scenes in the whole show. It’s so rare to see a representation of someone hitting their limit in such an honest to reality way- you get cruel. You do and say things you wouldn’t have if you weren’t in such a terrible mental state. Even the most morally upstanding people! Once you get pushed to that point, you’ve lost all conviction in the moral or beliefs that guide you, so you’re just freefalling and lashing out at everyone around you, seeing if anything sticks. That’s a long way to say god I love it when writers don’t pull punches about letting their characters be dicks. Godspeed on the next episode.

34:48 - I forgot to address Neo's abilities in the Ever After. We actually do get an answer about why she's so powered up here. I may have mentioned in this a previous V9 ep, but I guess I'll address it again. According to writer, Eddy Rivas, he mentioned in the Volume 9 Director's Commentary that Neo first touched down in the Ever After, she landed in the Brother's Acre (Eddy says he hopes people would put it together despite much of it being cut, but the acre Neo landed in and made her manor was the Brothers’ experimental acre.) Eddy quotes, “That allowed her to kind of start messing with a lot of stuff in the Ever After because it was more potently something that connected with her as a human. Because it’s where the Brothers did their thing.”

Vince

Miles Luna and Lindsay Jones ripped the beating heart from my chest this episode.

Rixec2

Ruby and Jaune are a case of both of them are valid in how they feel, but it's coming out at the worst time for them. Too much built up over too long, and not being allowed to healthily vent it until one more thing went wrong that sent them over the edge. It's why whenever I greet those I know I always ask how they're doing, even if they're someone I see every day. They're always given a chance to speak up.

One of my favorite things to notice on rewatch is how Ruby tries to comfort Weiss throughout volume 9 any time she gets too lost in thought about Atlas and the state of the relics. Take the scene where they’re running out of the burning marketplace after fighting the Jabberwalker for instance. You can see Ruby push down her own turmoil to give someone ELSE the comfort SHE needed, because that’s the type of selfless leader she is. She takes Weiss’s hand and leads her gently away from the sight of the fleeing civilians. Gotta be strong for the team, right? Even if you’re also crumbling under the weight of all the people you couldn’t save :’)

Mare

You definitely have a case of bias against Yang if that's the conclusion you've drawn. Yang is always under scrutiny by some of the fandom that has a vendetta against her. I do remember the comment you made back in Elijah's reactions where you had the audacity to compare Yang to Raven. Which is the most absurd thing I've ever read considering that Yang was the one that stepped up while Raven was the one that took off. Here in this specific seen, she was going into "Mom Mode." But you'd probably never understand that considering the beef you have with certain characters...especially the one that "got in the way of your ship." You people say you're okay with Yang and Blake but you and others have to thrown in SUBTLE jabs without a lick of Media Literacy because you focus on certain characters' faults instead of the bigger picture. Because in THIS scene...NO ONE is at fault. It's just unfortunately circumstances happening one right after another.

Statsky

Mega late, but this is just me supplementing what other people are saying about WBY actually checking in on Ruby throughout this season. It always bothers me when people make this claim because every time they noticed Ruby was off they checked in. Ep 2: Yang: Are you okay? Ruby ignores this. Ep 2: Blake: Are you sure about this? Ruby doubles down and ignores the underlying concern in the statement. Ep 4: Yang: Uh, hey, Rubes? Distracted by cat going missing. Ep 6: Yang: That's how Ironwood thought. You don't mean that. Jaune rudely interrupts. Ep 7: Ruby almost pops off but gets interrupted by a Paper Pleaser. (Lost opportunity for dialogue.) Ep 7: Yang: Ruby? Are you o- Interrupted by the Paper Pleasers ascending. Ep 7: Blake tries the positivity thing because that's what her hero Ruby has done at every other time in the series even if other people had a realistic point, but instead Ruby tells her to shut up.

Todd Lucas

"Ruby has always been the pillar of support for everyone".....exactly... And where has everyone been for her? Where has her support been? They all just keep looking to her for plans, ideas, support, words of wisdom, etc.....but rarely, if ever, has anyone done anything close to this with her. Remember, she was only what...15 or 16 when she got to Beacon.....

Asd JuasJuas

Ummm... people always seem to forget that most of the things that happened and are happening to Ruby, also happened to the rest of them. They tried to check-in many times, they either got interrupted or Ruby deflected.

Asd JuasJuas

also "Even Little who know Ruby 3 days saw that something off" - again, they saw, asked, got interrupted or deflected. And also... the only things Little does is sleep and hang out in Ruby's shoulder. They don't have to make decision or deal with situations... of course they'd notice.

dilemmafordays

I interpreted the time that Yang said 'one day...' about Jaune and Weiss going to the movies foreshadowing/paying off in Volume 7, when Weiss does go to the movies with Jaune and Oscar, but I may need to rewatch that in case I got that wrong

Rod

A seed of Ruby’s issues go back to volume one. Ozpin’s talk about “leader responsibility “ which are valid but don’t address the support also needed by a leader. Lack of support maybe part of Ozma’s issues

WishChaser1138

Ok, so I just subscribed to Patreon, just cos I had to see what Elijah did at the start of this episode XD
