The original title for this ep was The Tortoise and the Mare but was changed due to being too obvious if the plot wasn't obvious enough.

Sorry for being a zoology nerd here, but "turtle" actually isn't incorrect! A tortoise is a type of turtle, like how wasps are a type of bee. "Tortoise" is just more precise, but "turtle" isn't wrong either.

By the end, it's not really that high on the list due to other eps coming out that get much more flak. But it was the first ep to get a major "wow, that was just... not good.." reaction and have a lot of people disliking it. So has a reputation for being bad due to memory of that initial reaction.

I'm particularly attached to this episode, because I decided to give a chance to MLP when I saw the part with the song on YT. Thanks to May The Best Pet Win I discovered one of the best animated show ever! By the way, Tank is Flash the Sloth before it was cool... or rather, it's Flash made cool by RD :D

Who would want a Wasp for a pet genuinely? Also at they very end of the song Derpy pops out of the chicken coop. With S2 the crew saw how much Derpy was catching on in the fandom so they started putting her in unique cameos like that one.

I remember years ago the writers said this episode kinda got inspired in the pokemon saying that "every pokemon is someone's favorite pokemon" It started because hasbro already matched RD to a toy of a tortoise without asking lauren faust, so they had to came up with something to 'why would the fastests pony choose a very slow pet' and they thought how in pokemon fandom there is people who likes certain pokemon that arent good in tournaments just because they like them for personal reasons

Fun Fact: This episode was written because after S1 Hasbro released toys for all of the Mane 6 that came with their pet, but since Rainbow didn't have a pet, they randomly gave her a tortoise, so the writers were like "Okay, how did Rainbow end up with this little guy?" And this episode was born.

I feel like Dash doesn't really deserve to have the tortoise, at least in this episode; she was so mean to him at every turn, and she only likes him at the end because he ''proved'' himself. That's not how you treat or pick pets, and I'm surprised Fluttershy was okay with everything, given she's the nurturing caretaker for all the prospective pets. If you go into a shelter and start pitting the animals against each other to prove themselves to you, you're not getting an animal from that shelter. I feel like this episode sends a bad message to kids that animals have to earn your affection and care rather than you picking them because you like them and you take on the responsibility of caring for them without them having to earn it.

to be fair the animals, or at least the ones on offer here, all seem to be sapient, or at least far more intelligent than animals from the real world. It also wasn't ever aggressive. I'm more of a moth guy myself, but I'd be down for an intelligent wasp. I'd imagine they're viewed as kinda like... the guard dog equivalent for bug pets.
