Justin Riley

And thus marks the debut of new writer Merriwether Williams to mlp. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a very rough first impression as it remains one of the show's most unpopular episodes. Fortunately, next week's outing will be way better.

MephilesNumberOneFan

This is probably the most controversial episode of the series, and I never really understood why. Personally, I like it a lot

Justin Riley

I think it's because Merriwether Williams' style or writing just feels too cynical and mean-spirited compared to the usually optimistic vibes the show is known for. It worked on the other shows she's written for, but feels... off here.

RaisedEyebrow

The one and only criticism I have with this episode is that there's no scene where the Mane 6 TRY to talk to RD. Yes, it would fail, and maybe they already know that. But it would SHOW the audience that she doesn't absorb information through lecture. No spoilers, but there are episodes that actually capitalize on this trait of hers, without turning it into a flaw. (Edit: Also, the current thumbnail has "Lost in Newtopia" under the picture of Mysterious Mare Do Well.)

Lonely Pancake

Definitely my least favorite episode next to the owlicious one

Sirenityy2u

Personally I feel this episode isnt that bad..yea the moral couldve been better with RD actually being taught instead of teased this episode, but then again, she's very arrogant at times with confidence..I think this was deserved 🤷‍♀️

Charlie Odinoco

oh this episode is actually going to perform better than usual, people LOVE speaking their mind about it.

slavicandsapphic

I think its cause the others don’t even TRY to talk to RD. They’re just like oh shes getting too egotistical, time to knock her down a peg instead of like communicating their issues. And they do it to a point where RD just gets worse and worse. Their “solution” doesnt work, especially for a show thats meant to be abt how great of friends they are. Its not a horrible episode, but it is one of the most mean spirited ones for sure. I think it couldve been better if there was like. A minute of the episode where the other girls tell RD to chill out and she responds with basically a fuck you, whats the issue.

Jacob Voronkov

They inserted Batman into My Little Pony! Isn't that awesome?!

Taigan

@33:00 if that’s Pinkie Pie, how did Rainbow dash take her by surprise? Shouldn’t her Pinkie Sense have warned her? (Mostly I’m disappointed we missed an opportunity to see RD pinning AJ down 😉)

Some Simp

Im surprised you liked the episode cause this episode is pretty hated in the fandom

DaichiOkami

Other than rainbow getting way too full of herself I recall a lot of people complaining that the rest of the mane 6 would immediately jump to out shining her with another superhero persona leading her to humiliate herself and become paranoid. Instead of trying to just talk to her or do the intervention they did at the end first before she went out of hand. They didn't even try talking to her before they jumped straight to the convoluted part specially cause rainbow dash is a bit too dumb and egotistical to learn the lesson when it's this vague. Talking to her would have been more effective at getting her to understand specially since itnwas clear she learnt nothing from the whole plan. She only learned when she caught them and they explained their reasons. Which lead people to think she would have likely listened if they just talked to her earlier.

SoaringJe

I didn't know this ep was so controversial until this year of reactors. I think it never bothered me because I instinctively write missing scenes in my head to make the canon story sit better. This ep entertained me, and my braincell just thought the Mane 6 had already tried talking to Rainbow before the whole Mare-Do-Well scheme.

Vendetta

Damn I didn’t realize in this episode her friends came hating on her off the bat. They didn’t even for a second try to talk to her 😭.

A.B.

I love the rant she went on about the Appledash ship. Personally, I don't really give a damn about ships in general. I don't ever ship characters in the media I watch (that's what my own OCs are for) so if people headcanon stuff I'm generally just like eh cool.

Some Simp

Fuck you rarijack is better /lol just joking, but there is some good appledash food in this episode

Caroline Adams

I think this episode is overhated I think a god lesson was learned for Rainbow Dash. Also love the appledash in this episode!

Charlie Odinoco

IIRC the episode has 3 contention points that make people dislike it. 1- Cringe, specially in the latter part, where Dash is trying so much to play the hero that she's interrupting people in their normal lives, it gets uncomfortable, which is the point, but people have varying levels of tolerance about that 2- It Humbles a Main Character, chiefly Dash, and we get to see her monologuing to herself about how sad she is, which, as you probably know, some fans really love a character until they show vulnerability. 3- The Mane 6-1 decide to do a humiliation Ritual on Dash to teach her to not be boastful about doing heroic deeds instead of talking to her first, of course if they did there either would have been a pointless scene of Dash dismissing them, or the episode would have ended 5 minutes in, either way, some of the situations of the episode are a bit too "the script wanted it that way" for comfort, so people are dismissive of its quality Personally, I liked it when I first saw it, it's still good on the rewatch, and if you ever look up what the writer for this episode had to deal with beacuse of it, you're in to discover why bronies are kept at a distance by many creators.

Iago24

More like the Shadow, based on the costume.

Tim Sammuals

This episode is very divisive in the fandom

Kailey Chambers

Although I do understand why people don't like this episode, I do find it crazy that it's this disliked to the point of people saying this episode would perform worse than usual. I always found this just a meh episode but not totally offensive and impossible to watch or anything

Sydney Horton

I had no idea this episode was disliked. After watching it again, I still don't. Like you said, she's displayed cockiness before in smaller controllable doses. Even if the others talked to her first, we've also seen in previous episodes that her first response is to certain things is to deny or be combative. This also played into how Rainbow Dash herself learns by doing. We love confidence, but anyone can go to far. This is like if we learned the lesson from Trixie's side rather than Twilight quiet and fearful side.

Jacob Voronkov

One of the fan signs was based on the iconic logo for Batman: The Animated Series.

Willow 404

I mean about the Appledash vs Rarijack thing, plenty of people also ship Raridash.... and I also ship the three of them as a polycule. They've got plenty of great moments as a trio/throuple

Seraphem

Yeah, easily the most disliked writer who isn't just a one off. And as much as I agree that she wasn't a good writer for the show, she has proven on other series that she is not a bad writer overall, it's just that her writing style was a very bad fit for this show. She tends to be a bit more cynical and prefer to write characters with a bit of a jerk-ish edge to them for the sake of character conflict. Which while fine for eps where that's normal, is a very bad fit for a show founded on being extremely idealistic and hopeful.

Sydney Horton

Okay, then I feel like I'm missing something. What's mean-spirited in this episode? The closest I can think of is when the rest of the Mane 6 talk about Mare Do Well in front of her, but I took that as them trying to teach her to share the spotlight and recognize her jealousy. They never said anything that was crazy or that Rainbow was less.

Seraphem

It is nowhere near the top of the 'controversial' list, there are many that are way more hotly debated then this one. This just has the 'honor' of being the first episode to be almost universally decried as being outright bad when it first aired, and even though worse ones came out since, it holds that reputation for being bad. At most it's a debate over if the ep deserves the amount of hate it got or not, but very, very few actually call this a good ep. At most "Flawed but not as bad as the fandom seems to make it out to be" is the most people tend to say in it's defense.

Seraphem

Yeah, also the fact that the other Mane 6 jumped in to give her a lesson, before her ego started leading to her activly put people in danger. Making it seem like their issue was just they wanted to knock her down a peg and humble her. If it had been after she'd started to endanger Ponies with her ego, it would have made more sense why they felt she needed to learn a lesson.

Seraphem

Oh yeah, a hated ep will get way more engagement then one that is simply boring.

yuri lover

I dont really get the hate this ep, its not my fav but I dont hate it🥹

Seraphem

4- The way Ponyville suddenly turned into a disaster town with multiple ponies nearly dying regularly and only RD being able to save them. 5- Very poor communication of elapsed time, which plays into 4. There is no indication of how much time passes during the ep, making it seem like all of this is happening on the same day, which just feels really hard to buy.

yuri lover

This! They are all so cute and all have good moments

Seraphem

Yup, and the music during the chase scene at the end is very similar to the opening theme for Batman: The Animated Series. The costume a;so feels like a Darkwing Duck reference to me.

Seraphem

Yeah, there are way worse eps after this, but this one just has the reputation of being the first ep to be overall considered to be bad, so in peoples' memory just how bad it is gets a bit enlarged by that.

Iago24

Darkwing Duck's costume was also inspired by the Shadow.

Justin Riley

I am glad that you were able to enjoy this one. I think it bodes well that you're able to find enjoyment even in the less popular episodes.

Bitter Magic

The main lesson here is that RD is so awesome that it takes five people working together to try and outshine her...

Jesus Zavala

While it's not one of my favorites, I REALLY DOUBT it will underperform just because is THAT memorable! Also, I think boring episodes are more likely to underperform than disliked ones and this one is definitely not boring due to the whole "finding out who's Mare Do-Well?!" angle!

Rixec2

There are many reasons why this episode is seen as controversial. For some, Rainbow's bragging did go too far. For others, they felt the Mane 6 were hypocritical in bragging about Mare Do Well out of costume or that it was dangerous for them to involve innocent ponies in those situations just to teach Rainbow - a very competitive pony - a lesson. I do still like it, though. Plus, that moment of Rainbow and Applejack is still very much a good shipping point, as you've noticed. ;)

danny

i personally liked this episode, rainbow dash needed a good humbling with all that bragging + putting other ponies lives in danger 😭😭

Edward

I don't really think this episode will underperform. I think that it'll stay at like 20k+ later on, especially with the Owliscious and Buffalo episode being some of the worst episodes so far that the fandom has considered. The owliscious one sits at 23k views while the buffalo one is at like 22k. I think there are worse episodes later on, especially one in s8 that I despise.

Luís Pacheco

Pinkie Pie is very agile. Remember she could easily chase Rainbow Dash around in the beginning of Griffon the Brush Off.

Sparrow

Personally, I never realized this episode had such controversy—there are even moments in actual superhero movies where superheroes end up putting innocent lives in danger due to their egos getting in the way, but reading through everyone’s comments, I can see how this may have gone too far in the mean spiritedness for MLP.

Tristan Haller

Because Rainbow Dash's worst behavior in the episode only happens after it becomes (in her eyes) a competition, and because the rest of her friends never make any attempt to reach out to her about their concerns before embarking on an elaborate scheme, it reads to a lot of people as enacting humiliation on Rainbow Dash for taking pride in her ability to save people. It would land a lot better if they tried to talk to her first, or if she nearly screwed up by showboating before the Mysterious Mare Do Well came on the scene.

Gib ✨✨

Imagine my surprise when this is one of my favorite episodes lol

Kee Leichtle

Wow, they both top the Over the Barrel episode as your least favorites?

Lonely Pancake

I never minded over the barrel I never saw anything wrong with it

Kee Leichtle

I honestly don't agree with why this episode is so disliked. I mean yes RD was acting obnoxious but there are tons of episodes that dial up the characters' both good and bad traits. Also yes, the 5 girls could have talked to RD before donning the Mare Do Well persona but I think as her friends, they know it wouldn't do any good. Especially when her ego is as high as it was. Sometimes, you have to really know someone to know when only one thing will work.

Christopher Pope

Without spoilers, I can say there's a later episode with a similar structure, but where the mains talk to the pony with the issue first before resorting to less-upfront measures. In fact, talking's so much the common approach that it seems out-of-character for the friends to chatter among themselves instead of engaging with RD honestly.

BakaSama

Mosco: Makes an Appledash joke Me: THEY WERE STABLEMATES!

Christopher Pope

More positively, I actually prefer a series that has the occasional clunker over one that's constantly, relentlessly epic and soul-gripping. It makes for lighter viewing, and the variation in quality keeps us from knowing what to expect when we tune in. Headcanon: I imagine my own variation on this story: The friends see RD's issue but don't want to "rock the boat," and MMDW is an outsider who sets up a series of accidents to show her up & adjust her attitude. RD's friends teach the guest it's better to talk honestly & apologize for RD for not having done so themselves.

Deanie

I personally think this episodes likability is effected by the fact that many episodes of this show are considered to be 10/10s. And in a show full of 10s, a 6 can feel like a 1. While it isnt the best, it certainly isnt the worst or inherently badly written.

therewashuman

Her name is The Great and Powerful Trixie

Robert Morgan

I've always felt they're all in a sapphic ponycule. Save maybe Fluttershy...she is obviously with someone else later in the series.

The Wolf of Chaos

I’m more surprised to find out people don’t like it. I also enjoyed it when I watched it

Anzac-A1

14:52 Their faces literally overlap right before the flash!

Anzac-A1

16:03 If MLP were made today, then they absolutely would've made Rainbowjack/Appledash canon.

Anzac-A1

24:23 No, just a crack that Rainbow made worse.

Anzac-A1

Maybe people need to remember this is a KIDS show?

Universal Librarian

The adult MLP fandom, unfortunately, has a reputation for being easily one of the most toxic ones alongside Star Wars. To be fair, it's only a minority who are that bad, but it's a very vocal minority including people who sent threats to the production team over disliked episodes and someone who's trying to raise money and buy shares in Hasbro so he can try to force them to remake the last season of the show. And those are just the tip of the iceberg.

Ehren Bendler

Re: ships There’s the random beach episode where twilight and rarity are rubbing sunscreen on each other But appledash has lots and lots of support throughout the show

Ovlena

The pausing for Rainbowdash and Applejack reminds me of the early years of MLP where people take these moments and are like, “SEE! SEE! They’re totally together!” Then immediately goes to read a bunch of fanfics of them… Totally not talking from experience or anything 😅

Phoenix_mercury

This is no where near the "most controversial" ep, have you seen over a barrel for example?

MephilesNumberOneFan

Over a Barrel doesn't have a ton of fanfics written in direct response

ShadeWolf

"i dont think theyll make any couple cannon in the mane 6." ......👀

Leaf Storm

I was there when the episode first aired. Some people didn't like how Rainbow Dash took her ego too far. Others didn't like how the remaining cast retaliated with deception instead of trying to talk things out with her first. There was also a loud section of fans who just thought the superhero cliches in this episode were too lore-breaking. Why does Ponyville suddenly have a giant cliff and massive construction sites with human-like equipment? Did I mention this episode was written by a SpongeBob veteran?

Tristan N Milner

"Most toxic fandoms" Don't forget League of Legends!

Tristan N Milner

Ah, yes. The episode where Applejack dressed up in a skintight outfit to discipline her quite naughty girlfriend.

Kassy

I didn't know people didn't like this episode. I personally like this episode myself. It's fun. I don't really ship Rainbow Dash x Apple Jack but you keep pointing it out and now I can't unsee it. I kinda ship it now too... Good thing I'm a multi shipper.

Anvildude

I did construction for a bit, so kinda?

Robert Morgan

Honestly the only episodes I grew to dislike usually involved the Cutie Mark Crusaders as the focus. I always felt like their lessons never really stuck with them and they kept learning the same lesson over and over. That said, there are plenty of episodes with the CMC that are very good and enjoyable, especially some of the ones later in the series.

RavenFairy

👋work in a factory I guess I’ll have blueprints on my flank

iCommentToPlay

Loving that Mosco is transitioning into a conspiracist theorist for Apple Dash!! I don’t personally ship characters in this show (well maybe perhaps one, but spoilers!), but enjoying the shenanigans!

Valen

it’s crazy to me that people don’t like this episode, while I kinda understand where some ppl are coming from, but as a kid watching this show growing up i loved this episode. it was just fun and silly and i think ppl take the writing of this show too seriously sometimes.

Lilac Chimera

I’ve never paid much attention to specific writers, and now looking up her eps, yeahhh I see what you mean. It works in an episode where it’s a new character, but she was never a great fit for the mane 6+Spike

Lilac Chimera

I get why Over A Barrel has its issues, but really the only rough part is the actual fight scene that could have been swapped for a better way of reaching the resolution. This episode (and the owl one) are difficult to get through at most points cause it’s mostly comprised of one character acting off the whole episode. OAB had some really funny moments mixed in (Fluttertree, Mild-west dances, Pinkie’s song, etc.) that still makes it entertaining on a rewatch So I agree that I’d rank these two lower than OAB too

Julio Castillo

mmmm... i don't totally share this opinion.... (SPOILERS BELOW) Out of the 7 episodes of the show where she served as writter.... i can only comfortably classify "Mare Do Well" and "Spike at Your Service" as objectively bad. The rest of her repertoire in the show.... Hearth's Warming Eve, Putting Your Hoof Down, Dragon Quest, Wonderbolts Academy and Bats...... all range from Decent to very good episodes in my eyes. 5 hits and 2 misses, i can hardly see how that track record can be labeled as "not a good writter for the show".

Midnightroze

(I don't think this is a spoiler) I wont say who to see if you catch it, but there is actually more than one canon sapphic couples in this series :)

ShadowLightMew

I didn't know this episode was so dividing, we honestly still enjoy it

gabby clark

Especially in later seasons

Diamond Blue Book

I really like the rarity x applejack ship because they are polar opposites and I really like ships like that but I see the appeal of applejack x rainbowdash as well
