Racism lore

Dev M.

3:23 Pretty sure he's wearing glasses

Iago24

And that's how Pinkie Pie got her Cutie Mark!

Charlie Odinoco

"Hello, I am the Christmas Episode!" :D "I lied, I am actually Deep Lore and Worldsetting backstory!" >:D

JHB

"Am I about to get face-fucked with pony lore?!?" Well, that's not my "go to" phrasing, but yes, yes you are. And if I recall correctly, you're safe to delay YT release to December, but not later than that because (avoiding spoilers) some aspects shown here come up in later seasons.

Charlie Odinoco

People who have never seen where their food comes from don't understand the value of growing it, I think that's where the Pegasus's's's's anger comes from, they think it just magically appears because that's how *they* get it

Flarree

(Sharing as I watch) Earth Ponies tend to land as Pegasi do the sky - they also have superior strength and physical ability

Korrasami

PLEASE MAKE A (FACE F'D WITH LORE) MERCH PLZ

Luís Pacheco

Maybe next time I'll tell you how Equestria was made, that one's a gem!

Dev M.

It's kind of hard to hear the difference but they're called wind-igos here

KylarStern1995

Well proof positive that celestia and luna were not the founders of this nation. Discord was not mentioned either and he apparently ruled before them. Although I doubt that a discord spirit could actually "rule" anything. Second mention of this starwirl the bearded character.

JHB

Silligud?

Ashley Haas

As a lover of mythical creatures I like there more kid friendly take on Wendigo’s.

RaisedEyebrow

"Son of a dick" has no business being as funny as it is! And on the off chance you get confused about the seasons jumping around, the most widely held belief in the fandom is that the first 3 seasons take place over the course of about a year. So technically, Winter Wrap-Up is set AFTER this episode, chronologically.

Saga

Yeeees I love this episode! This one and the next one contain good worldbuilding, and the one after that is a wonderful episode that I think you’ll really enjoy. :)

A.B.

We got MLP lore baby!

Taigan

If you had the captions on, you’d have seen they aren’t wendigos. They’re WINDigos.

SoaringJe

The Algonquian mythical creature is Wendigo; the Equestria version is Windigo :D

Jesus Zavala

Fun fact: Yes, around half of the characters that the mane 6 play ARE male! Commander Hurricane (Rainbow Dash) Clover the clever (Twilight Sparkle) Chancellor Puddinghead (Pinkie Pie)

Iago24

If I remember correctly, the supplementary materials had Starswirl the Bearded search for suitable rulers for Equestria either during or shortly after these events, he found Celestia and Luna who were still just fillies and brought them to be raised as the ideal rulers. Discord seems to have shown up shortly into the sisters' reign and took over the land until they managed to find the Elements of Harmony.

Willow 404

Clover the Clever's mentor Starswirl the Bearded the Bearded is who Twilight dressed up as in the Luna episode

Tayga Fireclaw

Yess Equestria Loreee..... Some people had problems with the fact that the creatures where called Windigo , I personally really liked the designs... But I can't rely speak on the ,, discord,, in that regard , since I am from Europe. But I think this ep was amazing. 💙💜💚

Jennifer Dawes

The writers really went "For the holiday season, you all get... LORE!" I am by no means an expert, but I believe some tribes have issues with depictions of Native American lore (Wendigos, Skinwalkers, etc) in media, especially when they aren't well researched. I do like the MLP take on Windigos, a similar terrifying winter creature with it's own lore behind it, but I know it caused a bit of controversy because of the above when the episode first aired.

Sparrow

I’m not indigenous, but yeah, I’ve heard this too.

Sydney Horton

You should definitely write down those names you heard in the play. It's believed that Princess Celestia's nephew(the snobby jerk from the Gala in season 1) is actually a descendant of Princess Platinum, the person Rarity played. Since Celestia and Luna are immortal, and all.

Seraphem

Love this ep, so much lore so well done! Even if we could do without the backstage bickering... but it wouldn't be a Merriweather Williams ep without characters being dicks for no reason beyond 'drama'. Also, fun trivia, when Daniel Ingram was writing the Hearthwarming Carol he was trying to write something that could be seen as a kind of Brony anthem. Also, there is an offical 'full version' of the song from a holiday song album that was released for the show. It's a mix of traditional holiday songs song by the characters, and written just for the album ones.

Chris P3

And that's how Pinkie Pie got her Cutie Mark.

Faroth

Ah, yes, windigos... remember them for later...

GreyScale

MUCH later, lol! XD

Faroth

I can totally see mosco earth pony, elijah pegasusussususus (kinda like beta pinkienpie) and morgan an unicorn

Rixec2

The moral of the story is if you want peace, never send a politician. And yeah, the Windigos do tale some inspiration from Wendigos, but loosely, such as their connection to winter and being malevolent spirits. Otherwise, they're their own thing. And there has been some controversary over Wendigos in popular culture, being done mainly by non-Native creators, as they are depicted as a threat to white culture while appropriating and demonizing the culture it comes from.

Mindstorm88

I see a pretty interesting detail. Equestria is named like that because is a nation of ponies (EQUine), but it's also the name of a nation where there's EQUality

Justin Riley

This is a wonderful episode.

Helen Dingo

According to supplemental material, Pinkie is playing Chancelor Puddinghead very accurately, so people theorize that Pinkie is one of his descendants. Lol

Shay

"How could anybody blame the Earth Ponies for this?" Girl, there was a boy in my EMT class that insisted "dehydration doesn't exist, just get a cup of water from the sink", people who've never had to get things on their own be dumb like that🥲

Shay

I didn't even realize this until just now, omg🤣

Leaf Storm

Oh yes, the episode with the legendary "eight-foot candy cane" that drove countless theorizers up a wall back in the day.

Jared Bichler

Actually the guy with the cherry cutie mark might be in charge of security. He's friends with the captain of the royal guard.

Jared Bichler

They say ponies who don't follow the spirit of Hearths Warming are taken to the dark kingdom of Tambelon by its evil ruler, Grogar!

Jared Bichler

The task of raising the sun and moon took ten Twilight level unicorns.

Jared Bichler

The Earth ponies grew the best crops because of their magical connection to the Earth. The other tribes could never get the same results.

Jared Bichler

Actually, Equestria was originally called Pony Land but Celestia and Luna changed it to be more open to other species.

Ovlena

How dare my phone not notify me for this episode! But was very enjoyable eating dinner while watching this. Can’t wait to watch the episode where Discord returns and creates a mass army of clones that the main six have to battle!

Julio Castillo

I love Lore episodes.... and it's interesting too.... By the time Equestria was founded (which i calculate was around 1,300 before the start of the show, at least that's my headcanon)... Canterlot wasn't even built yet... but Cloudsdale clearly is, which means that the city of Cloudsdale is older than Equestria itself. I also really like the headcanon that Prince Blueblood (the rude Unicorn from the Season 1 Finale) is a Descendant of Princess Platinum... which is why he gets the ceremonial title of "Prince" even tho the true Rulers of Equestria are Celestia and Luna. Also... who could Forget such a trascendental character like Clover the Clever, that's a really funny name, it's forever stuck in my memory xdddd.

DiamondDawg

Mosco: WERE GETTING LORE. AJ a Min ago: This is about the founding of Equestria.

DKscribe88

My state of Minnesota is known for the wendigo myth as told by our native tribes. There may be some other states/provinces that also lay claim to that...hang on, looking it up...so yeah, Minnesota's Ojibwe tribe, and then the Cree from seven different provinces in Canada! Whoa, that's an impressive territory span...and the Algonquin from Quebec and Ontario. Just so you have an idea of exactly where in North America the legends come from.

iCommentToPlay

I really love this episode!! The lore in this episode encouraged to me write my own MLP fanfics and stories!

Tristan N Milner

Ah, yes. Lore and the birth of the Skyrim Fluttershy memes.

Iago24

I don't think that the pegasus city is meant to be Cloudsdale, the pegasi have just kept the same aesthetic going on for a long time.

Julio Castillo

I mean… it looks really Cloudsdale-like to me. Besides… we know that Cloudsdale can move around like an actual cloud, so I think it’s not a stretch to say that it is indeed Cloudsdale.

Someday Sera

Oh yeah, Alastor is a wendigo isn't he, forgot that.

Anvildude

"SOOOOMEONE OUGHT TO CLOSEN UP THAT WINDOW!"

Anvildude

Which is understandable, but also this show (not clearly) had its monsters be WINDYgoes- that is, wind spirits. The snow and ice bit shares some lore, but I think it's more a case of pun-gone-wrong than any sort of malice or insensitivity. "We want something dangerous to all the pony tribes. Endless winter! What can cause that? Wind spirits? Is there a monster that sounds like 'wind'?"

Dragon Palm

Near Christmas 2011, this episode aired on TV. My baby sister was watching it, and I decided to be a good big brother and accompany her. We had to leave for church before the episode finished, and I spent the next couple weeks obsessively thinking about it. January 5th, 2012, I finally broke. I NEEDED to know how it ended. I didn't know what episode it was though, so I figured I only had one option... to start at the beginning. I had never heard of bronies before, but I became one that day. I panicked so hard when I realized I liked a little girls show, and was so relieved when I learned I wasn't the only one.

Dusti

ughhh my week has been hell and this was such a treat to come back to 💖 love ya mosco (not in a weird way)

The Wolf of Chaos

33:50. I was lucky enough to have some time to visit the Edinburgh Dungeon on my trip to the UK. For people who haven’t been, it’s basically a walk-though haunted house style attraction detailing dark parts of history (with some creative liberties, Agnes Finnie wasn’t actually a witch but her character in the Dungeon makes the floor spin when she gets accused). That creepy cannibal family did indeed get a room in there, and it was intense. There were skulls and cave walls where they could pop out and make their voices carry from. They basically monologued stuff they were going to do to you (eat you, add your skull to the collection) until the King’s men came and busted them. If any of you get the chance, definitely go, it’s an awesome attraction. And don’t worry, Mosco, we’ll just watch it again in winter, even if you put it on YouTube sooner

BeatrixBlueberry

Yeah, I think Clover the Clever is a male, too. Which makes this the second time Twilight has crossdressed, if you count her Starswirl The Bearded costume :)

BeatrixBlueberry

If I had a nickel for every time I saw Mosco react to a cartoon with a creature that has a name that's a pun on wendigos, well, I'd have two nickles, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
