Sprig and Ivy, Luz and Amity, Steven and Connie. Are all amazing depiction of couple being perfect for one another. Kids now do have it so much better then us who grow up in the 90's or early 2000's for sure

Liam Gradwell

Exactly. Kids today need to see really good, well-written relationships, of any sexuality, that isn’t forced or half-baked. That seems to be asking a lot in what we see in other shows.

Liam Gradwell

You can see both sides of what Hop-Pop did: how yes it was wrong, but you also can understand the reasons why he did it. That is deep. 😭💚

MaoDoodles

We don't really get confirmation what side of the family Hop Pop is on. So thats kinda a question that still lingers around the community lol.

"Ivy On the Run" The child knows better When adventure calls her name. But mother knows best. -Yes! 1000 times yes! Like every show we had growing up the primary romantic pairing was some sort of toxic! It was one-sided, or stalkerish, or abusive. Seeing the kids get it right is refreshing. -I mean, Tritonio did give Anne a day or two of sword training, but the Muay Thai most likely helped fill in the gaps. And it shows off Anne's cultural heritage, being the traditional martial art of Thailand. -Ivy Hibiscus Matcha Sundew. The full government name! "After the Rain" When trust is broken One must do right to amend. We're Plantars after all. -I fucking love the joke of Hop Pop following the trail of mess to find the missing teenager. Valid -Kinda gross when you realize they were staying afloat atop a massive bug hook-up. 😬 -Parents eaten by giant birds. One day a year where the villagers just accept that one of their own will die. That guy still being carried away by the dragonfly. Amphibia truly is a horrifying place to try to survive.

Ivy on the Run: Alarm bugs fear Ivy. Mom has a point on the dirty plate. It can lead to bad reviews on Frelp(frog yelp). Muy Thai is a no joke martial art. The knee lift strike can relocate noses. When Mrs. Bounchuy starts speaking Thai you know she’s mad. Ivy steaming like a tea kettle. Careful about exaggerating Sprig. Somehow the boop is more insulting than getting punched. Oh, we are going full Mr. Miyagi here. Who is Ivy’s dad? Notice who was directly in the frame of that shot. It’s been a popular fan theory that Wally is Ivy’s dad. My idea is this: Felicia and Wally met, fell in love and had Ivy. But when Wally fell in love with #hobolife Felicia said hell no. She knows that the frogs are not far from being destitute and she doesn’t want Ivy to think you can’t put in the work.

Sprivy is the best! They're so cute together!

29:50 Yes we do, they've said his full name is Hopedia Plantar. Like Jedediah, but with more "hop."

MattTOB

I mean, given that his last name of "Plantar" was carried down to the kids, I'd lean more towards him being paternal grandfather. ...though there's always the possibility that the Plantar name carries enough weight for them to want to break tradition to pass it down (or the traditions in Amphibia could be different than on Earth, or they just felt like keeping the name, etc.), so he *could* be the maternal grandfather... Yeah, I can see why it's such a debate.

Charlie Odinoco

I really like that most details in the show serve as setup, it really should be the bare minimum for storytelling, but the way shows Like Gravity Falls, The Owl House, and Amphibia have done it still amazes me.

Charlie Odinoco

I'm on the Fence on Ivy's mom. On one hand discipline is better taught on-hands, which is the school of old Sports movies like Karate Kid, where the Master would not tell the student they were practicing because part of the lesson *is* Patience. On the other hand, she wouldn't have found so much resistance to learn from Ivy if she had told her from the beginning about it all. Then again, the Anthropic principle of storytelling says that some aspects of a story must exist without much explanation because there would be no story if they didn't.

Albedo12

34:55 - "Their parents died in an attack of some kind". Specifically a heron attack. You paused the episode in the middle of the word 'heron', while talking over the narration - sometimes your excitement for lore gets the better of you!

Jared Bichler

In a fight, attention to detail can mean the difference between life and death.

Yoshinatorsaurus

While I agree the writing for animated romance has improved, I do think completely dismissing the 90's and early 2000's is just as harmful. Take Aladdin and Jasmine (in the tv series), Hercules and Megura, or Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable, to me at least, those couples will always be adorable, and in some cases, surprisingly ahead of their time when it comes to writing.

Yoshinatorsaurus

Ever since you first mentioned wanting to learn more about Sprig and Polly's parents, I knew this episode would be a major gut punch. The fact Hop Pop blames himself really hits close to home. I like the sincerity of his apology, and how it's clear he was still in the wrong for hiding the music box, but you can fully understand the reasoning why he did it. Fantastic writing.

Jared Bichler

Tai Chi is all about being fluid and building your body up slowly.

Jared Bichler

If Felicia told Ivy she was learning martial arts, it would've been another thing for Ivy to charge right into.

Jared Bichler

Imagine if Felicia were actually trying to hurt Ivy.

Mosco, Ever since tv was a thing, shows have gone out of their way to depict “hyper-healthy” family relationships. Oftentimes they were so sweet and buttery that they didn’t feel realistic. On top of that, in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s you got that evangelical revival in the US, leading to hypermoralization in broadcasting. It’s in that context that you need to see shows like “The Simpsons” and “Married with Children”. For their time, they were pretty subversive, basically shouting “FUCK OFF” to the trends of the era. People loved it because for once fictional shows didn’t make them feel bad about their own relationship flaws, but rather depicted those dynamics as either “normal” or in a “well, it could be worse: you could be like this” kind of way. So yeah, you grew up in an era that was by itself a reaction to the era before that.

Geass

Even on Earth, in some cultures, it is normal for the man to take his wife's name. Maybe not the norm, but common enough that it isn't a big deal.

ShadowLightMew

I'm thankful for having had anime growing up and not just cartoons to show me how relationships of any kind work. The anime did it better for sure. Now at least we have animated series that do things right, better late than never in some cases

David Johnson

"Poly, you just don't have the patience" or the kicks, for that matter. "Did they actually die, or did they just go missing?" Well, it *is* Disney - dead parents are a dime a dozen with them.

Taigan

Pretty sure Hopidia Planter is their paternal grandfather since they all have the Planter name.

Marcy Wu

These are two of my favorite episodes for sure. I also have really loved Ivy since the second I met her and After The Rain needs no explanation as to why it is such a good episode. That is to say I'm also very much looking forward to the next 2 Amphibia uploads. The First Temple is important plot wise but my favorite of the three is Friend or Frobo.

Marcy Wu

I can also understand why Anne reacted the way she did. She only started learning emotional intelligence when she got to Amphibia and she's the only 13. And then one of the people who she trusted most betrayed her. She didn't have the tools necessary to deal with that in a mature way. So even if I do think it was an overreaction I don't blame Anne.

xattygt

The rest of the season is peak amphibia imo

Marcy Wu

I fully agree. My favorite season is season 2. Seasons 1 and 3 are amazing in their own right but season 2 is truly the best.

Julio Castillo

I understand and support the Hey Arnold! take from a... "This isn't ok in real life" perspective.... but i think the drama does make the pairings more interesting to watch (at least in my opinion). Don't get me wrong... i do like how healthy Sprig and Ivy are as a pair, but it does get kinda boring after a while (again, personal opinion).

Eliteguard99

I like how part a’s ending made me learn something about Mosco, in that she hasn’t really seen many kung fu movies, because the master using what appears to be meaningless manual labor to teach their student martial arts is one of the genre’s oldest storytelling tropes. I didn’t mean this as an insult i just like learning more about people.

Marion Ette

Moscow, you know I like you, but you literally recorded yourself seeing the new changes in the intro for season 2, and panicking under the assumption that someone must've dug up and stole the music box. That's what you're remembering.

ArcticBanana

18:25 - To put it simply, Ivy got Mr. Miyagi'd. 29:49 - Yes, actually, assorted people have been calling him Hopadiah since Episode 1.

Michael W

After the Rain: The kids in sumo suits. Funny Frog Show shenanigans. When Anne mentions the music box, all I can hear is Hop Pop saying “I don’t feel safe.” Still he’s going to get away with it. He knows where he put it. Anne following him can throw a spanner in the works but he can explain it right away. Except it’s not there. For Anne this is a disaster. Not only did HP betray her trust, he lost the only way she has back home. We can say she should listen to what he has to say but at that point she needs time to cool off. Sorig and Polly’s Detective Agency at your service. With an assist from Soggy Joe. Anne’s still furious, Hop Pop’s explanation better be good. I know they’re an important part of the ecosystem, but I hate most bugs. “YOINK!” When Hop Pop finally tells Anne about what happened you see the survivor’s guilt he’s been carrying. When he shows Anne the book, something he should have done in the first place, you realize that ish is about to get serious.

Michael W

One other lesson, never come between Mosco and her lore.
