Justin Riley

In which we learn that Rainbow Dash is an alcoholic and her girlfriend enables her bad habit.

Charlie Odinoco

It's nonalcoholic... Or maybe it is the way they react

Lonely Pancake

To me even as an adult this is just an apple cider episode cause I’ve always lovedddd apple cider and I’ve never been a fan of characters who drink (except qrow him drinking is his only character flaw to me)

The Nerdy Tiger

I think this is the first time you've not said "energy, energy energy!!"

Ovlena

Don’t forget Pinkie Pie also walking off with multiple mugs. We need a competition between her and Rainbow on who can drink the most

iCommentToPlay

Rainbow loves the taste of apples apparently!! 😏

Caroline Adams

lol I love applejack “I didn’t learn anything I was right all along!!!”😭😂

Cropper

When I first saw this episode as a child, I was so shocked that they'd allow alcohol in a children's show lmao wasn't until years later that I learned that American cider is typically non alcoholic by default. Though I think they did toe the line in this episode because the way Rainbow Dash acts around that cider is... suspicious

The Nerdy Tiger

In America they have 2 different ciders Hard cider which is alcohol, the same as in the uk or Scotland Soft ciders which is what is shown here is non alcoholic

Ehren Bendler

yeah, so this is an "American writers forgetting cider is an alcoholic beverage everywhere else" thing. But the episode works either way, honestly. Edit: This episode got initially banned in the UK. Didn't even raise a blip in the USA, this is from before "hard" cider became a big thing here.

RaisedEyebrow

"Dear Princess Celestia: ... I didn't learn anything!" Still one of my favorite jokes!

Charlie Odinoco

Oh I had forgotten, this episode is stupid conroversial because many people think the Flim Flam Brothers werre right

Leaf Storm

Fun Fact: Even though apple cider is traditionally “non-alcoholic” in America, the confusion was so strong that every episode involving “cider” got banned in certain countries. Took a few seasons for the show itself to stop using that word.

cipher

So in the US apple cider is non alcoholic. If it has alcohol it is called hard cider. This is from prohibition where the alcoholic stuff became illegal. apple growers basically invented the new stuff to keep selling there apples. So what you're seeing is basically apple juice mixed with cinnamon, allspice and a truly stupid amount of sugar. That said making it traditional aka hard cider is much more funny.

SoaringJe

iirc this ep was banned in a few countries/regions, but not USA since there cider is by default soft cider AKA nonalcoholic cider. edit: and it was translated to 'apple juice' in a few languages

Jared Bichler

Flam is the one with the mustache, that's how I tell them apart.

Jared Bichler

My friend and I want to cosplay Flim and Flam one day.

Willow 404

In america, I think cider is typically just non-alcoholic, unfiltered applejuice. But there's definitely some alcoholic jokes to be made here

morthasa

Mosco casually channelling Jeff from The Good Place

The Nerdy Tiger

Applejack said in the earlier parts of the episode that their cider sales keep the farm afloat during the winter months. Without those sales they lose the farm

KylarStern1995

Also when she said it reminds her of willy wonka I went more to chitty chitty bang bang.

Saga

MLP is a great show. There will eventually be less engaging episodes, which I feel is to be expected with 9 whole seasons. But a good majority are fun and enjoyable. :)

Jay Yusuf

Don't worry Mosco, Mlp just goes up from here

A.B.

Applejack: I didn't learn a thing! XD That never gets old lol

Jennifer Dawes

A running joke with me and my girlfriend in regards to the end of this episode: "Ah didn't learn shit!" I do find it hilarious that this reaction popped up just as I put a new recipe I'm trying in the oven, specifically apple fritter loaf cake. So now I have something to watch while it bakes.

DiamondDawg

Since most cider in the US is considered non alcoholic airing this ep in the US was no problem unlike last ep there was no censoring in the US. In other countries though this ep was either banned or censored in a way where the word Cider is replaced with Juice and so in other countries future eps that have the characters say cider in it was replaced with juice. I think the fact that there is not a single foal in this ep outside Applebloom does prove the cider is alcoholic.

Robert Morgan

I love alliteration as well, I've used it for a TTRPG character of mine in a Deadlands: Weird West game. He's a Mad Scientist and has powers through the science. He has a potion to allow him to speak and understand languages that he calls "Dr. Anxiety's Lovely Loquacious Liquor" and a power that lets him stun things that he calls "Dr. Anxiety's Ensnaring Electrifying Equipment". It's been fun making them, though i do use an alliteration generator to help out.

Dev M.

I never understood why they never limited it to 1-2 per person, considering they ran out every season. I remember when I first watched this episode, and even now, Pinkie Pie really annoyed me. The fact that she got way too many cups just for herself, and was rubbing it in. I know not intentionally but still.

Ghostly_Syder

Funny thing about this episode right after "The Last Roundup" in the ending Rarity says "Your gonna get it Rainbow Dash" I like to think the creators tease Rainbow Dash about getting Cider, and so its hard for her to get it till the very end!

Lilac Chimera

Yeah in the US “cider” is usually expected to imply non-alcoholic. People tend to need to specify “hard cider” if it’s alcoholic. So youre meant to assume that there no actual alcohol in this episode, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun calling RD an alcoholic lol (not to mention that the showrunners intended Berry Punch to be the town drunk when they designed her) It did get the ep banned in a few countries if I’m not mistaken

Sydney Horton

"Dear Princess Celestia . . . I didn't learn anything!!!" AppleJack is Best Pony. Nothing to say really. Just an enjoyable iconic episode

Flufux

I've heard that this episode was banned in Italy, and another episode that mentioned 'apple cider' they actually redubbed the voice acting in some regions, changing the word 'cider' to 'juice'.

Tayga Fireclaw

The " I didn't learn anything" ... Is the most iconic line in MLP ... I remember going to conventions and M.A.Larson writing the entire quote on my AJ drawing and doing the same to every Applejack fan . He loved that quote.....hihi. Thanks for the reaction.💛🧡

Ember Blackwell

Especially in the mountain states, apple cider is a non-alcoholic sweet drink for everyone. I would regularly warm it up with spices and a couple shots of whiskey just to have a hard apple cider version for holidays. I don’t think I had seen an advertisement for hard apple cider in the United States until 10 years ago when I moved to California. Even now the “hard cider” section of the alcohol store here is pretty damn small.

Warren

They for sure got away with it by hiding behind 'the Cider isn't alcoholic' excuse, but threw in the implications for the parents watching.

Warren

I love flim and flam some of my fave side characters in this show

Yoshinatorsaurus

Yeah, I figured this would need to be addressed. In the US, Apple Cider isn't always alcoholic. SOFT cider, as shown here, is essentially just apple juice with the pulp still in it and unpasteurized, making it spoil quickly without refrigeration, which is why the ponies need to go there to drink it. HARD cider is when it's fermented making it alcoholic, like when grape juice becomes wine. Of course, it's pretty funny thinking of it as the hard kind in this episode.

Warren

And such begins Rainbows plan top marry into the apple family just so she can be the first to sample the cyder, the apple wedding ep is one of my faves in the show but that wont be for a while

Jared Bichler

Sweet Apple Acres Cider is an Apple Family trademark. Not even Filthy Rich is allowed to sell it.

Mindstorm88

In Italy, my country, this episode never came on TV because the cider sold in this country is all alcoholic except for rare exceptions. Some idiots at the "child censor department" (or whatever it's called) thought parents weren't able to explain to kids that the cider they see in the shops is not the same as in the show. They also could've adapt the term "cider" with "apple juice", since it's basically that (the "cider" is sold after a too short time from its production to become alchoholic)... oh well, it came out on DVDs and streaming platform, so who cares Definition of FLIMFLAM: Deceptive nonsense, a trick, or a swindle intended to cheat someone out of money

Luís Pacheco

Season 2 is just really that good (wait until you get to the finale...)

iCommentToPlay

I love Mosco bobbing to the song! One of the longest songs in the show!!

Sparrow

It’s kinda unfortunate that they don’t really have the kind of cider the US has in other parts of the world because a nice hot cup of non-alcoholic apple cider is so delicious and very much a token autumn drink here. As a kid, I was obviously much more familiar with the non-alcoholic kind, and I loved that kind. Also, this might just be a personal opinion, but I always sorta distinguished cider from apple juice because I usually would encounter it as a hot drink (temperature wise) though it can also have some spices, so it’s basically fancy apple juice. I guess they don’t indicate whatever cider they’re drinking in this episode being hot, though, so idk, but I still feel like it’s somehow fancier than your standard apple juice. I’ve had the alcoholic kind of cider too, but I definitely look forward to drinking non-alcoholic cider every fall. Update: Actually, I just remembered that there is this sparkling apple cider drink (a cold drink) that I like, also non-alcoholic, which I can confirm DOES taste different than apple juice and is literally called “Martinelli’s sparkling cider.”

Yoshinatorsaurus

Fun Fact: Flim and Flam's song is heavily based on "Ya Got Trouble" from the musical, The Music Man. And the Flim-Flam Brothers themselves are based on the con artist main character, "Professor" Harold Hill.

Rita Styles

Yep, the only controversy this episode had was overseas, where the dubs just replaced the word "cider" with "juice." I don't know if it got banned anywhere.

SweetCandle

Trouble with a capital T and that rhymes with P and that stands for ponies.

matthew james Stromberg

Tbf pinkie shouldnt have been allowed that many cups even if she paid that much cause that was probably a barrel and a half worth of cider

SweetCandle

Cider, without any modifier, pretty much exclusively refers to unfiltered apple juice. If it is fermented, it is almost always called hard cider.

The Nerdy Tiger

Ah OK thanks for the clarity on the terms, like Moscow I am from the UK where cider tends to refer solely to the fermented alcoholic variety

Yoshinatorsaurus

Yeah, I would've LOVED to see Rainbow Dash call her out on it. I'm honestly shocked the Apple family doesn't have a one mug limit.

Athena

Mahn I love season 2 SO MUCH. It's just straight up good episodes like all the way through. The ONLY episode I feel "eh" about is Mysterious Mare Do Well, and that's already passed. I really like next weeks episode as well. I'm also a little biased towards season two because it has a lot of my beloved Flutterdash moments in it. (Actually, I feel like season 2 is good for a lot of ships...huh.)

Taigan

While this episode is a lot of fun, one thing about it bugs me. The FlimFlam brothers are clearly modeled ofter old style conmen. If you’ve ever watched The Music Man, that’s exactly who they’re based on. The only problem is, they aren’t actually. Their machine *works!* And it produced cider apparently as good as the Apple family could. The only reason their final batch was bad was because they shut off the quality control function. If the Apples had negotiated the brothers to a more equitable profit splitting, they could have made MORE money working with F&F. The machine made cider three times as fast as the Apples. So even if they gave 2/3rds of the profits to F&F they’d come out even. A 50/50 split would see the Apples’ profits increase by 50%!

Jumaima Chowdhury

Fun fact: this episode was banned in the uk on tv because of cider’s association with alcohol haha. So a lot of us uk kids grew up never seeing this episode

MajorMagna

As for why the Apples would lose the farm, AJ mentions that Cider sales keep them afloat over winter, even agreeing to the 25/75 split would've cost them the farm, let alone losing ALL income from the cider.

Seraphem

Since the Cider thing is covered, the epic musical number the Flim Flam Brothers put on is a direct homage to the main musical number from the classic musical The Music Man. Though most people recognize it more from the Monorail Sing from The Simpsons, which was another such homage to the same source.

Sapphic Sam v2

In America you typically have to specify that you want hard cider. More often than not, if you see apple cider available without any qualifications it will be non-alcoholic.

DiamondDawg

Think it is the longest song in the show.

Deco the Artist

It is true that, if the Apple family didn't let Flim and Flam use Sweet Apple Acres's apple supply, then the contest couldn't have gone on and they'd be beaten...but as it was put by Chad Rocco when he reviewed this episode: "That's the whole point of a flim-flam - it's a pitch that gets you to submit to a deal that's completely unnecessary and benefits only the con man." The Apples got flim-flammed because they were unfamiliar with the brothers' game.

Ehren Bendler

By far my favorite letter to Celestia

Littlespider07

The line "Dear Princess Celestia: ... I didn't learn anything! I was right all along" is the moment that truly solidified Applejack as my favourite pony

Chance

Hey monster thank you for giving me the new indecisive indecisive General that's in a good stuff in my head that stuff in my head I didn't know you used to have a speech impediment that's how true really interesting I actually used to struggle telling left from right like it was really bad at when I was away I would don't laugh so it's kind it was really bad at when I was away I and things like that but you said those are some of the ones that you can do so here are some of the ones that I can as well if you've ever seen The Big Bang Theory this is what it's from I suggest what paper scissors rock paper scissors lizard spot what it's really simple paper paper cup is rock rock purchase lizard lizard poison spot spot smash scissors scissors scissors lizard newspaper paper just poop spot and has an as it always has rock pressure scissors and then another one it's from a it's from a Disney show it's called Wander Over Yonder I don't even recommend it's only it's only two seasons salon but it's a song it goes You see I've done it sense of research on a different Dominator you see her whole arm is powered by volcanic estimator so if I apply for stone into a part of regulator and completely discombobulate her on his Palace Center but nicest sonoma????????? JHB

In the US, most apple cider is what I think is called "cloudy apple juice" in the UK. The alcoholic version is called "hard cider." The writers used the similar naming to skirt the issue of just what was for sale here.

Chance

So there are two different types of apple cider so there's the hard apple cider and then notice the more softer apple cider that you can get personally I don't really like apple juice I don't like apple cider I tried it I I need it we had to spit it out I didn't like it also I know it's not going to come across in this note that I just pick it up that I just coughed but I have been doing a lot of voice acting and recording for a fan fiction that I'm working on and I'm going to meet you in another round tonight and I know I should get my voice but I tend to get sick the first week of October so I'm trying to I'm trying to vocal cord before I get sick and also me and my mom I have a lunch date tomorrow from my birthday which was back in January actually but life just just happening so but yeah we're going to be the only one of my we're going to be going to one of my favorite restaurants for lunch and we are going to be going to my favorite book store we are going to be going to my favorite book store as well so yeah and oh and I'm also going to be starting to watch Ruby soon I don't know how well that's then I know because we have four day 14 days in town and until Halloween and I'm super excited and but also also if you need somebody to voice a shy kind of nerdinary diversion playing I be more than happy to I'd be more than happy to join or even my own character I would like to know what kind of character yours is and didn't you like your class and your your subspecies and stuff like that mine is a teasling but she's also a half Phoenix and she has a lot of mice that's cool disabilities and attributes but I'm only five one so she's 51 as well and I don't have the best eyesight either so but I would love to hear what your what yours in did character is and I'm looking forward to the Trinity campaign with the rest of the steel Squad and yeah I would love to be able to join you guys because I would you guys are just a lot of amazing fun smart awesome talented people and I I would love to add the main sets of you guys to my to my friend group and you guys not sure to remind me of some of my friends so so yeah there is an episode of My Little Pony I can't wait for you to get to it has one of my favorite songs in it and have a great night have a great night I hope you are as excited for Halloween as I am I am well I used to say the pumpkin Queen but I used to say the pumpkin Queen but more Vampire Queen Syria and also I know with your grand it's been hard mentally and with your aunt as well my grandma actually passed away last year and it's been really hard on the Family especially me and my grandpa and my mom and and my grandfather or my grandpa's had some he's had some health issues he's doing better now no he's doing good he had to go in for open heart surgery but she is but he is now he's doing pretty he is doing a lot better now and he's turning 75 this year and I posted about my about my grandpa in the past but seriously there's a good reason for that me and my father we don't really talk anymore and my grandpa is he's more of a father to me than my dad was so especially to me in my two older sisters because all three of us like me my middle sister and my oldest sister are all neurodiversion and our father is as well but he she wasn't very accepting of that and like she said you was but I I'm usually I'm really good at reading people so I kind of knew that he wasn't okay with it and I found out I was autistic high functioning at a very very interested know this around 78 when I found out so so I was fairly young and my grandpa he's always been more patient with me and my sisters than her dad and her father has so and I know what you're calling my father instead of my dad but my eyes is not really deserving of that role it was around for you or no it was around 100 yeah it was around 5 years ago that I found out that I am bisexual and I was terrified to tell my dad because my sisters have both have both been in relationships that my dad did not really approve of her stupid reasons like reasons that I don't really want to get into but I was scared to tell him and I was trying to expecting him to kind of flip out and not really not really except me for being by for being gay and she was chill about it cuz I and I actually found this out recently my mom had told him before I told him which I'm not mad about because and just to clarify she was not she was not the first person that I came out to I actually came out to my oldest sister we were in the bathroom one night this is like a few years ago and you were talking and I was like hey wait cuz her name is Whitley and I was like hey wait there's something I there's something I want to tell you or there's some yeah there's something I want to tell you and she's like sure what is

Chance

And I was just you told you told me like and the rest of the crew of how you're coming out story with your parent with your mom and but I told my older sister first I have two other sisters and anyways so you were talking and I don't I have something that I want to tell you and this to my older sister and she does sure what is it I took a deep breath and I told her that I'm gay she didn't give a s*** like at all was really proud of me for telling her that and after her I told my second oldest sister I told my brother I told my mom I told my grandparents and I told my brother-in-law and my friend and my friends too all of them are 157% accepting and I appreciate that out of all of them my uncle my mom's brother he is also dead as well and I knew it and just my mom told me about his experiences and I I kind of knew I was some sort of by or day before I cuz I found out when I was no 13 I found out when I was 13 and I started watching our house I got to Through the Looking Glass ruins and I kind of figured that and I had a crush on one of my friends and I was talking to my mom and I and this is when I was younger I was like 11 or 12 at the time

David Johnson

Mind you, if it's fresh cider, leave it alone a couple of weeks, and it'll *become* hard cider.

JHB

This episode draws inspiration from the 1957 Broadway play and 1962 movie "The Music Man", which featured lots of music numbers and flim-flammery. A secondary inspiration was The Simpsons episode "Marge vs. the Monorail", which itself was an ode to "The Music Man".

Beryl Strifeclaw

Monerail/Music Man for the next generation. XD

iCommentToPlay

Longest in the show not including Equestria Girls!

ShadowLightMew

I sincerely hope you got that Elite Trainer Box with Nidorina inside. My chase box hasn't released yet but i'm still so dam scared. The Mew box is the one i want cause Mew is my number 1 favorite and has had so much meaning for me since the days of me having a purple Game Boy Color and there were only 151 known Pokémon + the Johto teasers. Scalpers have taken the fun out of it so much. I still hate that stores don't stick to normal retail pricing either. The Binder Collection and a Sylveon tin were all i could get and they costed more than they would normally retail for. If only we hadn't lost chains like Game Mania to bankruptcy, the guys would have had my back and saved me one item of each wave 1 product and at normal price. I miss them and hope they are helping fellow fans and kids still out there. Anyways back to the episode

ShadowLightMew

I have to disagree on the "slop" bit, Scarlet & Violet were clearly not meant for Switch 1 but Switch 2. But even on Switch 1, i had no real issues and i fully enjoyed my playthrough. Sword & Violet are among my favorite Pokémon games. Legends Z-A was a much needed sequel of X & Y. Legends Arceus was such exquisite lore, Brilliant Diamond is what Diamond should have been from day 1. Let's Go Eevee & Pikachu are still so much fun. People have their opinions but in some cases it really feels more like a bandwagon opinion. I have been hyped for Winds & Waves since reveal and i hope they do Italy as a Pokémon region while i'm still alive and able to game. Sony PlayStation though is where the big crime decision was made towards gamers.

ShadowLightMew

Now on topic, this episode is still a fun season 2 classic to this day and introduced a troublemaking duo indeed. That is all cause otherwise i will spoil

OnTheSpectrum7342

Two things: firstly, yes, this episode was in fact banned in multiple countries including the UK, Ireland and Italy, because of the generally alcoholic nature of cider. And secondly, Flim, the clean-shaven Flim Flam Brother, was voiced by Sam Vincent, the same man to provide Sonic the Hedgehog's singing voice in the 90s cartoon Sonic Underground.

DaichiOkami

Definitely not rainbow since the universe itself prevented her from ever even trying it until thid episode for the first time lol

Faroth

We all know pinkie win that

Faroth

They did the same gottaway as Welch's grape juice. Isnt wine.. but tastes like wine 🤣😂☝️

Faroth

13:07 it shows that earth ponies DO have more techniques and talent when dealing sith earth/plants stuff than unicorns

Faroth

You cant say that rainbow is an alcoholic, she didnt get to drink any cider in years, if something, pinkie is the alcoholic in ponyville, RD only wants some cider but never get some

Faroth

To be fair with flim and flam, they did make good cider, they just panicked and turn off quality over quantity

Haldon Lindstrom

This episode is even more appropriate today, where a lot of tech bros and business execs are just Flim Flam brothers without the charm.

Anzac-A1

Cider can be non-alcoholic or alcoholic.

Anzac-A1

Nah, the writers absolutely knew.

Anzac-A1

8:28 Not outside the UK.

Anzac-A1

35:22 Pokemon hasn't been putting out "slop". I'm so sick of this term. It's just become the term for "stuff I don't like".

Cali Jester

In all honesty, the townsfolk and especially Rainbow being so grouchy about the Cinder left a bad taste in my mouth. Couldn't dig the rest of the episode afterwards.

frameschick

Someone show this woman "The Music Man," stat! "Willy Wonka" indeed...

Borealis

They didn't "get away" with anything. The faces they're making are just happy faces because the cider is good. non-alcoholic cider is so common in the US, I didn't see my first hard cider until I was in my 20s.

Patrycja Jamroży

In Poland they changed the cider to apple juice because cider is alcoholic here as well.

Fluffn'Stuff

Fun fact about the song in this episode, the inspiration for the song came from a song called "Ya Got Trouble" in the musical "The Music Man". If you listen to them back to back, you can tell where Daniel Ingram got the inspiration from.

Jason Eras

Can I ask, what are you wearing and do you plan to wear one that resembles a pony?

Anvildude

So this song and the show around it are based on the classic stage play and movie "The Music Man". There's a song in that called "Trouble" that's a certified classic for 'grifter songs'- to the point that the Simpsons even made a spoof episode called "Monorail".

Jason Eras

This episode was not, repeat not banned in America
