Mike Flanagan has said he sees Carrie as a three season tv show.

I’m not sure, but I think Mike Flanagan has added elements of Firestarter (another Stephen King novel) to this series. The place with the people with special abilities feels very much like something from that book. Of course, I could be very wrong.

That's a good point. But he does have several books with people with special abilities, so maybe its just a nod to his overall world.
