Mouin is a great guest

Bibi as Churchill is perfect. Evil scum who talk big but are idiots, who dragged the U.S. into wars we don’t want, and who only survived the war they picked because of the U.S. (and Soviets) doing all the fighting.

CR

The Blob is monumentally stupid for sending two proxies into wars that we can’t let them lose lest we lose harder.

Great episode. Speaking to the section where Mouin mentioned American Universities and Gaza: I mentioned in a comment months ago Columbia's president Shafik was bound to go. Too much of the student body hated her, so there was little chance of her manging to be prez without constantly getting heckled. Anecdotally, I also returned to my extremely conservatvie home-state to start law school this year, and a "law students for a ceasfire" panel was set up at the student org fair. A lot of people stopped by. I would've thought that impossible even in the more insular world of education in a deep-red state like my own.

You guys turned me onto Mouin with his first appearance and now he’s one of my go-tos for essential analysis on Palestine. Very happy he’s back.

I can't verify it cos I don't speak any Hebrew, but I believe the claim that those soldiers were live-streaming their gang rape for Ben Gvir's enjoyment comes from one of the soldiers IN the video, who tells another that Ben Gvir's watching in real time. It's hard to be surprised by any depth of human evil in 2024, but I'll be honest, I was not ready for that one

CR

The students don’t matter. They will never matter. They don’t vote now and the dems have banked on that for decades. And when they get older they won’t give a shit about Israel if they do vote because there’s other things to worry about (that the dems will never give a fuck about, but blah blah lesser evil).

CR

Law students are good at pretending to care only until they are paid well to do evil. That table means nothing.

Regarding the discussion at the start of the episode: if it makes you feel any better, Mark, as far as fates worse than death go, being physically paralyzed really isn't so bad (relatively speaking). Some paralyzed people would rather be dead, but I think there are worse fates. There are some much more terrifying cases to read about in the history of psychology. One that still fills me with palpable dread was a guy who suffered a stroke that destroyed his brain's ability to form new memories. He still had his existing long-term memories, skills, capacity for language, etc., but he forgot everything that happened to him in the present within a few seconds or so. He could still hold a conversation because of how the brain works, but if he talked to anyone for longer than a minute or so he'd forget who they were and what they'd just been talking about, so he'd just kind of do stream-of-consciousness, the brain ad-libbing to keep the pattern of conversation going. The "scarier than fiction" part was that scientists working with him gave him a journal to record his thoughts, and the only thing he wrote in it was "Now I am definitely awake" and "For the first time I am definitely awake" over and over and over and over. I believe he was a composer, and interestingly he could actually still learn and even compose new songs. Basically, that sort of thing is handled by a different part of the brain, which still functioned normally for this guy. I find it scary to think about, but as John is fond of saying, humans are as plastic as wax. It's not like this guy killed himself or anything, despite it all. Different individuals react differently to various stresses and hardships, of course, but it's always amazing to me what (some) people can endure. Call it adaptability, resilience, willpower, volition, grit, sisu, whatever, it's very impressive.

As far as I know, the organizers of the student movement are Palestinian- and Jewish-Americans for whom this is a very personal matter. I'm not going to make any predictions, but at the very least I think a lot of them will not give up and will not let this go. Maybe it'll be like the Armenians in America, who remain very politically active without being able to sway the national leadership much, but I don't think these groups are just going to grow out of their activism.

I despise Churchill, but I think that's an unfair comparison. Churchill was a much savvier politician who fared better against much fiercer, more powerful enemies than the Palestinian resistance. He also wasn't corrupt in such an obvious and stupid way that his own country wanted to throw him in jail the second he left office. The situation in Israel is really a mirror of the Saudi-led disaster in Yemen. Though honestly, the Israeli performance here might be even more pathetic from a military perspective. To me, the most shocking thing Mouin said was when he theorized that the Israelis might have failed to significantly degrade Hamas's ability to manufacture weapons up to this point. The IRA had an entire island with access to the sea, and in their entire independence struggle they apparently never managed to obtain more than a few dozen machine guns. The Palestinians are manufacturing their own arsenal, somehow, in what's effectively the Kowloon Walled City that's been under complete blockade for decades, and apparently production has continued without interruption during ten months of direct military occupation and constant bombardment? How is that possible?

No

I live in Germany and can confirm public opinion on Israel is very different to the elite consesus, despite a very biased media which mostly doesn't mention the war at all any more out of embarassment. Protests continue regularly, despite a press blackout, all completely outside the established political parties and system. 2 unique things I've noticed. First its been consistent for 10 months. That's really unprecedented as most protests fizzle out quickly in the social media age when people lose interest. Second there's been an awareness from the beginning of sabotage and infiltration, which has developed into a good deal of messaging discipline. Alot of social movements have faced this problem and failed to develop any ideas about counter intelligence. I've never seen this before and I think its in part caused by really crude and unselfaware zionist tactics, itself a result of being given carte blanche and really not caring at all about how they're viewed. The constant stream of warcrimes seen on social media also really undercuts any attempt at propaganda, I'm surprised more censorship hasn't been employed

The only thing I would disagree with is the "wars we don't want". Maybe us regular folk don't want the war in Gaza, but our political elites from both parties are more then on board with it.

With the number of “axis of resistance” fighters trained/training in Syria, I’d be wary of making any declarations of hezbollah’s offensive capabilities. Just the fact that they have infantry makes them a potent force against isreal

While Netanyahu and Biden can be blamed singularly, there is a systemic cause behind the massacre in Gaza. Just check out today's AOC /DSA speech in Chicago and the ferocious EU liberal support for the massacre in Gaza. The recent UK riots point to some causes. UK was the only country in the Western world that could not regain it's pre-pandemic GDP levels even as late as mid 2023. The riots are just an expression of fighting for a slice of the pie between different lower class groups. The liberals are desperate for war to move the camera away from their country's slide into backwardness

Jeff Normal

There are plenty of unexploded ordnance lying about to be converted into charges. Not sure where they get the rest of the bits that activate an IED, or make an RPG actually fly. Impressive indeed

Miko

I think about the fact that the Armenian genocide is still well known and discussed in spite of the fact that it's ancient history by American standards, had little photographs/documentation compared to modern standards, and had the full weight of the Ottoman govt to hide and "bury" it. Then I think about how the Gaza genocide has been the most live streamed ethnic cleansing in human history, with ample video and photographic evidence of the crimes, IDF soldiers bragging about it, and Israeli leaders giving national addresses about it (smite amalek). That the israeli media has given hours and hours of evidence in support of it, the Israeli govt like their german counterparts have documented and outlined their plans as national policy. In sum this will be the most documented genocide...ever...and how the west thinks this is going to just "blow over" and be forgotten. The US got away with the Iraq war but I don't think they'll get away with this one long term. The empire is collapsing too hard and too fast, and the ability to avoid accountability is collapsing along with it. Unlike monsters like Kissinger (who aged out in time) I think the younger enablers of this genocide are going to face justice for it, or at a minimum have to hide in their European or US states forever as a result of it while the weight of international justice and collective horror only grows by the year. The democratic party in particular is going to face some kind of reckoning in the future, between the genocidal "centrists" currently in power and the growing base of young people with the knowledge of leadership and democratic party full complicity in this crime.

The lasting thoughts at the end of what this does to people around the world hardens my heart. For the last year just being inundated with these awful images and stories with no chance of stopping has changed me as a person. This was an amazing episode that just disgusted me and made me so angry. Angry at the time I've spent at protests, trying to keep a calm conversation with liberals as they rationalize this slaughter, and at the gall the Dems have at girl bossing a genocide at the DNC. Listening to this interview made me feel a little more sane because sometimes this shit makes me feel like just a minority of people think this is ethnic cleansing. Ya'll show me that a lot of people think this genocide is wrong. I started listening to Radio War Nerd and the first episode I heard was #407. Thank you for your work Mouin, Mark, and John. And for making at least one person feel less crazy rn.

Simon

Great episode. I have very much appreciated Rabbani's commentary. On elite bigotry against Arabs, Chomsky has a funny story where he gave a talk at Harvard on racism and read out a bunch of quotes from their faculty about Arabs, but replaced 'Arab' with 'Jew' in each instance. Apparently his "joke" didn't land very well: https://twitter.com/justinpodur/status/1443396003743293445
