I picked up the Dying Earth / Cugel the Clever stories due to this podcast when it came out years ago and was kicking myself for not doing so earlier. It’s such amazing material. A serialised cugel tv show could be so cool and funny if done right.

random unlock! I read both of the novels about Cugel because of this episode! My favourite throwaway passage, following a party of sailors after Cugel leaves them: "With the briefest of farewells they marched to the village of the lizard folk, where they slaughtered the males, filed the teeth of the females, dressed them in garments of reeds, and installed themselves as lords of the village"

Matthew Bolton

The moment I started reading this comment, I knew which passage was going to be referenced...

I’m a new subscriber and beyond delighted to learn that the war nerd boys are Wolfe heads. Gotta look into this Jack Vance individual know i guess

i never knew RWN covered Wolfe until now and i’m celebrating like it’s the Dawn of the New Sun

Oh be still my heart! Huge Wolfe fan, but have put off getting deeply into Vance for years basically for the reasons you describe: little pathos. The Book of the New Sun audiobooks are absolutely incredible too. Jonathan Davis’ reading is pathos-packed, every word is a tender bruise. Davis pretty clearly has a taste for these brutal worlds too, he also does great readings of Greg Grandin’s Fordlandia and—what could be more Wolfeian in its harsh worldview—Francis Fukuyama’s Origins of Political Order
