Guests: Brendan James & Noah Kulwin, Blowback

The co-hosts of the always-brilliant Blowback show join us again to talk about their newest series on America's Cambodia War, which lasted longer than the Vietnam War it grew out of, produced some of the grotesquely evil leaders in history (along with Pol Pot), exposed dark cleavages in both the communist and US-led worlds, and would prefer us to memory-hole it, if it wasn't for those nosy co-hosts...

You boys have been busy lately. Thanks, and keep up the great work (both RWN and Blowback)

cstenzy

Well well well if it isn't the Blowback brothers

JoR

I feel like they had this prerecorded in the back pocket for when the comments got a little testy 😂

Shane

They had a good interview on Chapo, but I imagine this will be good tool given that at least one of the hosts actually remembers this time

Nicoo Güntner

It was recorded when Nasrallah was still alive so at least 27th of September.

T

They unlocked a bunch of free posts after the nasrallah/landis struggle sesh

JoR

I noticed that too lol

"When we fall we will fall in a very Cambodian way." Painfully true.

This sounds like a Streetlight Manifesto lyric

The Khmer Rouge are maybe the ultimate example of why you shouldn't try to mix nationalism with leftism. You get something even more perverse and vile than regular right-wing ideology, because you end up justifying pogroms and genocide in the name of class war. It's really sick. Ezra Pound is a great example of this sort of thinking. He considered himself a "left-wing fascist." In his mind, the Jews equalled the ruling class, which meant that the Holocaust was a laudable revolutionary act. Disgusting.

Watermane

I think I have an I idea where you're getting at, but left-wing nationalism has mostly been non-fascist in anti-colonial strugggles

Watermane

haven't listened yet, but that sounds very dolandian

John Dolan on America: "When we fall, we're going to fall in a Cambodian way, not a Vietnamese way"

In my opinion the true difference between the Khmer rouge and other left with national beliefs is there conception of the nation. Most left wing national projects are umbrella movements that cover all those and only exclude colonists who have no roots. Ironically china is a perfect example of this. The Khmer rouge mistakenly combined there conceptions of communism as being part of there specific national identity rather than as a byproduct of there movement being born from radical expats. Unlike the maoists or the Vietnamese communists who had very similar beginnings the Khmer rouge decided very early on that the Khmer country side was the only place for there ideology so unlike maoism or the vietminh who were able to wrap up even some traditionally right wing sections of the population the Khmer movement completely shut themselves off to the idea that how they should treat the city and country side should be different. Aka how the maoists solved this issue

Taking bets on the next Blowback season. Even odds for Chinese civil war/Taiwan vs Yugoslavia

Bob K Ross

Do not sub to blowback. They just take your money and then don't give you anything.

.

This is such a weird thing to say lol. You don’t have to agree with everything they say or even how they present some things but I always tell my more liberal minded friends who are more open to other opinions to listen to them. They do important work in the imperial core.

Igor Igorsson

I subscibed a while ago and got the bonus material that was promised (10 episodes/season). Not sure what you expected...

I'm not going to try and say that the IRA, Stalin, and the Khmer Rouge were all equally bad because they all mixed socialism with nationalism, because that would be patently absurd. There are practical and/or sentimental reasons why it's not inherently awful to act within the framework of nation-states as a leftist. And completely rejecting national identity for leftist reasons can be a tactical mistake, too. But in the long run, sorry, the evidence is in that nationalism will eventually smother anything good in leftist ideology. You can't fight for the workers of the world if you only care about the welfare of workers in your own country. Nationalism destroyed the global socialist movement in WWI, it caused the Soviet Union to become a repressive oligarchy whose ruling class ultimately cannibalized their own people to enrich themselves, and the PRC is as oppressive towards workers as any explicitly capitalist country because they feel compelled to compete with their political and economic rivals. I'm not going so far as to say that statism or the concept of nation-states is bad in and of itself. But once you become invested in the competition between nation-states for power and resources, then you become part of the problem. Building lasting world peace, ameliorating the effects of climate change, and dismantling unjust hierarchies can't be done without some kind of solidarity between people that transcends national (and religious, and ethnic) divides.

Um. This didn't happen to me. Subbed a while ago, just got all 20 episodes of the latest season in my feed in a big lump, confusing me for a bit, but it's all there if I look, previous seasons included.

Somebody in the "Podcasts for 2016 Bernie millennials" network needs to do a proper deep dive into the Balkan Wars, Would require a series, and there's sure as he'll been blowback.

Tyler Pittman

Not true at all. I got everything I paid for. You must not know how to properly connect whatever podcast app.

Tyler Pittman

I know Mike Duncan's Revolutions is sort of in this orbit (ignoring his tragic lib-ass mishandling of the USSR) has already done a much-lauded season on Haiti, but the modern era is kind of a speed run. I'd love to hear about Haiti with a focus on the 20th century.

John Hieronymus

Since it got mentioned on this show I think it’s important for people to understand how nationalism was key to the organization of “socialist” Yugoslavia from the beginning, there was an excellent interview with one of the editors of the Balkan anarchist journal antipolitika about the history of nationalism in the balkans as a modern phenomenon imported from Western Europe and carried to it’s final conclusion by the Marxist Leninists after World War Two: https://archive.org/details/tfsr-20240609-Antipolitika

What do you recommend as a better podcast or audiobook on the Russian revolution?

Kevin Walsh

Neither the old IRA nor the Provisional IRA started out as left-wing movements per se, so bracketing them with Stalin seems peculiar to say the least.

William

I’ve heard Cambodia is a great place to vacation

Winston Reid

Ray’s podcast is great too. I found it through RWN’s episode with him and Boris.

US government gave Pol Pot 25 million to join the UN. If he was really a communist and not just a CIA stooge to muddy the waters of what communism really is, they would have killed him let alone give him money. He was a blood thirsty US backed fascist.

jkjkjkj

He didn’t start off as a cia stooge but he certainly did become one quite quickly, and additionally one of Thailand and China too

jkjkjkj

A quick note: Thailand wasn’t a formal British colony. It was independent in the way Iran and China were: largely (but not totally) self governing but with large regions that fell under French or British spheres of influence. This is one reason why Cambodia and Laos were important to France: they acted as links to the extremely desirable economy of eastern Thailand (fwiw Thailand figures as extensively in supporting the KR as China was in the 80s). Also, I think if anything the continuity between Lon Nol and the KR is a bit underplayed here. The racial aspect is correct but also irredentism of both Lon Nol and the KR was equally shared. Had he won Lon Nol likely would have gone to full scale war with Vietnam/South Vietnam over Kampuchea Krom.
