Guest: Richard Kim

The War Nerd talks to fellow War Nerd Richard Kim about the early 7th C China invasions of Korea under the Sui Dynasty — wars that have become a source of hot debate recently between  Chinese war nerds and Korean war nerds . . . These wars include some of the largest  battles of pre-20th C history,  some epic feints, naval landings, logistics & river crossings . . .

Hi Richard, loved the episode. Any chance you would have live links for those you provided in the show notes? Thanks!

Richard Kim

Do you have an email that I can send all the images and my show notes to?

Griffin McEnery

Yes! g_mcenery@coloradocollege.edu Thank you so much!

Hey John have you ever thought about making a podcast about literature? Not just war related books but also your favorite books or new books and trends in literature.

Avery

Wow, I had no idea that the word Ryukyu came from someone's guess about a placename found in old histories. Like California and Brazil.

If anybody ever visits the War Memorial/Museum of Korea located in Seoul, you'll immediately be greeted by this large diorama of the Battle of Salsu in the main hall. A clear evidence of how deeply interlinked this battle is with Korean national pride and identity (<a href="https://weaponsandwarfare.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/dsc_0585.jpeg)" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://weaponsandwarfare.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/dsc_0585.jpeg)</a> One thing I forgot to mention in the show is that the Battle of Salsu didn’t kill all those zillions of Sui troops in one day. Those who had already crossed the river were likely run down by Koguryo cavalry in the battle’s aftermath and many were also enslaved. We know this because there are mentions of Chinese slaves taken during this war.

"Don't Die Needlessly in Liaodong Song" Famous Sui Rebel Song by Rebel Leader Wang Bao. My translation : "In front of Long White Mountain, I am Rebel who have seen it all; wearing pure red silk cape. My spear pierce half the sky, my blade brighter than the Sun. Going up the Mountain I eat dear flesh, Down the Mountain I eat cows and sheep. Suddenly I hear Imperial Troops come, I swing my blade to do battle. Compare to pointless death in Liaodong, what hurt is merely getting head chopped. "

What a fantastic show, so well prepared too. Every bit as good as the amazing episodes with Carl.

Dan Collins

Definitely! Can't wait to hear more from both of you. I loved how Richard tied it all up at the end.
