As promised, your copy of To the Crows: Selected Essays of John Dolan is now available to all members of the mighty Radio War Nerd Legion. Download the .pdf or .epub attachment at the bottom of this post, yours for no extra charge!

These essays collectively form a bitter, funny, and savage critique of the early 21st-c's various crimes and hypocrisies. In essays dating back to The eXile through NSFWCorp/Pando and RWN, John strips George Orwell and James Frey of their costumes, pisses on Reagan’s grave, and recovers the lost history of NATO as he experienced it Pleasant Hill, CA.

Of course it wouldn't be a true John Dolan collection if he didn't put himself through the woodchipper: essays on his doomed time with Dubya's neocons in Iraq, his personal connection to the disastrous Human Terrain System experiment in Afghanistan, and more.

It ain't all grim. The first essay is a beautiful hymn to crows, and throughout the book there is a strong love and reverence for mammals, nature, and the dying earth.

If you enjoy the book and want to spread the word, please leave a review. Actually, that's an order!

Speaking of orders: you can also order an ebook or paperback version from Amazon to push To The Crows into the eyeballs of many an unsuspecting book browser. It'll do everyone good!

Did subscribers get access to Dolan’s civil war book too?

Thank you — look forward to reading! Is the cover art AI? I ask not because I particularly care, but because the audience for this work definitely will and AI art might actually limit its reach

Joshua

Am I in the correct reality? This is good news

Thanks Mark and John :)

Thank you, John. You've reinforced my determination not to teach ESL anywhere else on the planet but where I'm currently living.

CR

Yes. There should be a patreon post, but if not, you’ll have to email them

CR

Hooray!

Found the post, thank you!

How very kind of John to write a whole book just for my birthday😉

The formatting of the epub version is really janky. The pdf is fine but there are all sorts of weird line breaks in the epub version.

Very excited to read, thank you so much for providing these for subscribers. Pleasant Hell, Erdogan Pizza, and Should've Been Hanged were all fantastic

Maciek

Womp womp, does the pdf convert ok to kindle format? My experience with pdfs on kindle has been less than stellar.

Maciek

I hate the patraeon app, first the stupid homescreen with podcasts i dont care about and now i cant download files or even mail them to myself. Hopefully the website works fine, thank you for sharing your work John.

T

No they don’t convert well. I think converting the pdf to epub is what RWN did.

I just read « Canada was a Cakewalk » while in New Zealand. Loved it. I work with refugees and immigrants and our government dollars then to death while asking them to celebrate how inclusive we are. It’s dismal.

Good day, John. Thanks so much for the link; it's good to read so many of the essays again, sometimes after 20 years. One thing that I noted on the "To the Crows" version of “A Million Pieces of Shit”: "And so, like a child returning to his nice warm bed, Frey returns to the privileged world that has supported him all through his life. His rehab friends, of course, cannot. After all, they’re authentic, and their authenticity means they have to die violent drug-related deaths in order to validate the streety credentials this rich brat has won in the clinic. They must die so he can strut." It misses the three final paragraphs in the original eXile article that came after that. https://web.archive.org/web/20040918121705/http://www.exile.ru/2003-May-29/book_review.html "So at the end of the novel, Frey supplies a list of what allegedly happened to his friends from rehab. As you'd expect, most are dead, imprisoned, or vanished. But after all, they were only local color, proud scars that will give Mister Frey some lively stories to tell at the summer place in Maine. And this self-aggrandizing, simple-minded, poorly observed, repetitious, maudlin drivel passes for avant-garde literature in America? My homeland is in worse shape than I thought." Those paragraphs make the essay hit harder, and I am surprised that they were omitted. I would humbly suggest that they be added into the PDF.
