Beloved Girl

In high school in Western Australia I had an East Timorese boyfriend. They never spoke about it, and nor did he, but now I know why his whole family were all alcoholics, the crying kind. I never got it back then.

Been anticipating your coverage of East Timor for awhile now, you guys do not disappoint

David M

Without listening to it yet, thank you to the country in which I was born for being an isolationist jealous colonial power who is only happy to facilitate brutal rulers and train up Korpassus. Just don't mention the tropical concentration camps.

Just finished Patrick Cockburns book Muqtada. It's great. Pat needs to make a second part to the book.

Ernesto Che

Very interesting, always wanted to know more about the East Timor slaughter. Also, that part about Kuwait being a wahhabist country is definitely not true....almost 40% of the population is Shia and they actually have political power (unlike in Saudi Arabia or Bahrain).

Winterborn

Ah nothing like my own nations weird post colonial shame. Look forward to it.

Australia has a strange fearful paternalism when it comes to Indonesia - forever wanting to be their greatest ally whilst simultaneously being terrified of them as potential teeming Islamic masses. Throw in a good dose of white arrogance and Australia's generic anxiety about being an overwhelmingly outnumbered "white nation" in "Asia" and our relationship with Indonesia is...challenging.

That wasn't my impression when I lived there, but then we were far from power. What I encountered was strange rules that seemed to come direct from (Sunni) Royal Family whims, like the complete ban on all antidepressants--quite unlike Saudi Arabia.

Ernesto Che

Interesting. Also weird that they outlaw antidepressants - any idea why this is?

Benjamin Glover

Heh, it's been a while since a good reminiscing episode. Traumatizing but honestly you make it as funny as hell.

Ryan Campbell

Informative discussion on Timor. Can you recommend any books on the war/occupation? Thanks

When Saddam was hanged the hangmen actually shouted "long live Mohammad Bakir Alsadr" who was Moktada's uncle and who was executed by Saddam in the 80s.

Brian Harvey

Love the mini rhetorical analysis of the headlines from news organizations.

Jason Thompson

Your latest newsletter about Gaza was wonderful.

Ray Mason

I would say there is just a strong 'anti' feeling about antidepressants and their effects in that part of the world. Same thing in Africa too

Ray Mason

On one hand there is to be more awareness on MH issues and on the other the effects of opioids in America especially and others leads me to think there has to be an alternative approach apart from often times 'numbing' medication. Its a tricky one, personally I am 50/50
